    Can we all just go back to using wooden sticks? I really don't want to spoil myself with a composite if I'm always lifting weights in the gym and its really annoying how some people have claimed that wood sticks are better for some things, so at the end of the day there's no perfect stick for every single style of play. Making a wood stick look like a decent choice for some. What bothers me the most though is that I do not want to spend 10 times as much on a hockey stick to get a shot 15 mph faster, if it's not going to be better everywhere across the board. With that expensive stick I'm seeing your snapshot go almost as fast as a curveball in the MLB.

    Just signed up for beginner beer league after not playing for 20+ years. Definitely investing in some elite quality skates, although they'll be lightly used. For me it's about not only protection and stiffness but comfort, light weight, and most include good steel. You can find really good premium skates for under half price hardly used, so unless money is a huge issue, I say at least get the great skates, great stick and maybe great helmet. Everything else can be just good.

    How much did they pack out, or how much better did they feel after a bake? I like the fit mostly but after wearing in the store for 20 mins, there was a bit of pressure from the tongue around the 3rd eyelet from the toe. Reluctant to drop a grand if this is going to be an issue. Is that tongue thermo formable with that plastic insert?

    I use AS1 tacks - 1 piece and they fit great and perform awesome. That said, I believe the comfort and the progressivity of the flex on my Graf 709s made me a 'better' skater when it came to playing defense. I feel that the one piece, super stiff boot is lighter and definitely puts down more directly, but also at a cost of the purity of the extension of the 'push'. Even though my 709s are much heavier, if I was logging more blueline time and also needed more control, I felt I had an advantage with the Grafs.

    Back in my day (90's) you either had a hard shot or you didn't. Now, 300+ dollars buys you a shot. Luckily for me, I always had a hard shot. I've bent and twisted a few Aluminums. I still use my Aluminums and the percentage of hacks and stick slashes have dropped to almost zero... I've broken a few opponents 300$ stick by getting slashed... I've seen grown men die inside. I laugh.

    I used to have a very shallow skate sharpen and would have lots of issues with not getting enough grip on the ice (sometimes slipping when taking tight turns) until one of my coaches switched up the grind on the sharpener and said "You want sharp? I'll give you SHARP!!" and put a very deep grind on the blade. Initially I felt like my feet were stuck to the ice and I wasn't moving anywhere, but after a couple games and training sessions I could never go back, as I had so much power and control in my staking that it really improved my game (does take a tiny more effort with the legs though)

      I just have regular stainless and ref probably on average 3 games/hrs per week (thats a full hour of skating on the ice) over the course of a year, and I play on average one game a week over the year and I think I went over a year without sharpening. Im convinced that people dont need the depth of sharpening they think or definitely not nearly as often as they think especially if you take some care of them. When reffing people will fall and be like I need my skates sharpened, I want to be like your skates had nothing to do with that fall. Unless you get a nick or flat spot, dont need it very often unless playing highly competitively. Just the standard high end stainless is much better than it used to be but ive been on CCM.

    • @mhicaoidh1
      @mhicaoidh1 10 месяцев назад

      @@auzmo yeah, I tend to agree. Generally the only time I get mine sharpened is when I have a nick or dent in the edge that I can't suss out with a sweet-stick. The DLC does seem to protect the edge better from that happening. But the real benefit in the blades is the quality of the steel (whether Bladetech or StepSteel, etc) it's way better than what most skates come with from the factory.

    • @auzmo
      @auzmo 10 месяцев назад

      @@mhicaoidh1 i think a lot of it is that people dont need nearly as sharp/ deep a hollow on skates as they think, and some shops might use that to their advantage. The least experienced people seem to get theirs sharpened the most and they likely need it the least.

    • @mhicaoidh1
      @mhicaoidh1 10 месяцев назад

      @@auzmo totally. All hockey players fall when they skate ... better skaters fall less. I think part of the issue too is access to professional/knowledgeable sharpeners. So the same old tropes keep getting repeated to new players as they come in: 1) "Start with a 1/2" hollow" ... works for everyone, but not ideal for heavier or lighter skaters. I went from a 1/2" and eventually to a 5/8" ... and now skate with a 11/16 with a Zuperior M ProSharp profile. 2) "Just get them sharpened and you're good." I think more focus needs to be put on profiling because the cheaper factory steel is just cast in an approximate profile. ... unrelated but a pet peeve ... 3) "Choose a stick flex that's half your body weight." But, the player is 32 years old, weight 228 lbs, and has below average in upper body strength. That 100 flex stick isn't going to work for him.

    Hey man, nice video. Not seeing a lot of folks who like this stick. I think it has the best slapper that I’m aware of but I kinda struggled with other shots. I’m a huge supertacks guy but have cooled to them since the ASV pro and now the AS6 pro. I’m not much of a hybrid or low kick guy. Have you had the chance to try the Super Novium yet? If so, can you speak to the performance differences between it and the Novium Pro? I don’t care about weight or shaft grip. I’m more interested in blade feel and how it flexes in your hands. They’re kind of an X factor thing, but you and I seem to have similar shooting styles. I use an 80 flex in the ASV pro but a 75 flex in everything else and have to cut sticks down a little. Thanks in advance!

      Knives are sharpened from heel to point, because it's the natural direction of travel of the blade through the cut. The natural cut of a skate blade is from toe to heel.

    • @BenBreeg1138
      @BenBreeg1138 8 месяцев назад

      Direction of cut has nothing to do with how you sharpen…

    • @1967250s
      @1967250s 6 месяцев назад

      Doesn't really matter, as long as you maintain the same pressure and same speed to maintain the same curve of the blade. Many I experienced sharpeners start slow and speed up as they go along the bottom. This causes more metal to be ground away at the front than the back ( if you sharpen from toe to heel ). This eventually causes to curve to change radically. This happens especially often on figure skates: you'll often see rental skates with the front of the blade sharpened!? ground, away to the point of of uselessness (you'll see rental skaters tripping on the toe picks a lot! ).

      Hey I know you’re not asking me, but these are stuff for flex sticks. I usually use 75-80 flex and cut my sticks. I wish they made these in 70 flex. I think in your case the stick will feel a little whippier if you add a plug, but it’s not technically changing the flex.

    Thanks for the review. And thanks for the final comment regarding beer leaguers! So I wore Bauer 2000's for 30+ years and they fit like slippers. They were falling apart though, so I bought a pair of Vapor X500's maybe 3 years ago, but could never break them in despite multiple attempts (crippling foot pain after 5 minutes of use) so I went back to the Bauer 2000's. A few months ago, the boot of one of my 2000's literally broke and they're no longer usable. Long story short, I had a few days to find new skates that feel good almost immediately. A few trusted guys told me the Ultrasonics had zero break-in time, which was all i really cared about after my experience with the Vapors, and this year's version of the Ultrasonic was the Mach. I caved and bought the Mach's despite the price, I just want a high quality skate that's as comfortable as possible. I am still getting used to the drastic difference in stiffness between the Mach's and my old Bauer 2000's, but the Mach is softening a bit and I can tell it's a terrific skate. I switched my Superfeet from performance to comfort and that made a big difference as well. I'm also sure the Mach's will be the last skates I ever buy so the price is a non-factor if they last half as long as my Bauer 2000's did.

    • @calgary2800
      @calgary2800 8 месяцев назад

      I also had the Bauer 2000 and to this day I don't think I have skated in a more nimble skate..I for the life of me regret selling it for the Bauer 5000 which skates faster in a straight line but no way was it better if you're an agile faster.
