Sergei Sergeyevich Prokofiev, Sonata No. 2 in D Minor, Op. 14, Karmen Grubisic - Piano
Dedicated to Francis (1888-1967) and Peter (1895-1981), my great-grand fathers, Habsburg soldiers who fought in the First Word War from the very beginning in 1914 to the bitter end in 1918, on the bloody fronts of Galicia, Drina, Isonzo, and South Tirol.
The sonata was composed in 1912, and first performed, by Prokofiev (1891-1953) himself, in 1914, just a few months before the start of the War. This is not pretty music. Although it contains lyricism, it is often sarcastic and brutal. Thunder at the twilight of Romanov Russia. The War is in the air.
00:01 I. Allegro, ma non troppo - Più mosso - Tempo primo
06:18 II. Scherzo. Allegro marcato
08:29 III. Andante
15:01 IV. Vivace - Moderato - Viva...

Probably going to get demolished for saying this, but Allegro con Brio made me think of Fratelli Chase from Goonies. Enough that I am pretty sure this is the inspiration for it.

I have always loved the 5th, 6th, and 7th (the war sonata) . Since played by Pogorelich, i mean Richter played everything too fast, it was usual in the 70" (cf. Gulda..). Richter had an amazing repertoire too.

That's a point. There are still some unknown gems also, like Mozart's duos for violin and alto, Mozart's String quartets 20 and 23, and Schumann's op 56 and 133. The most popular pieces are often not the bests.

It's a wonderful piece, but today i find it too sad, it's really sad... if you are used to romantic music you may find it ok, "as usual"; but Chopin is a step deeper toward melancholy; It's so full of regrets and despair. It would just kill me. Full of despair and madness, for the youth. By-the-Way you can read a book by G. Sand, about their travel to Majorca... Chopin could pass his melancholy through the virtuosity he brought to the public (or compensate...), the amazing performance was an escape, a path to a better world. Never mind, music I discovered recently : Mozart's string quartets 20 an 23, his duos for violin and alto, and Schumann's op 56 and 133.

40 minutes reclam at the beginning - this capitalists are insatiable /Czech word is better - nenažraní/. She plays with closed eyes - sometimes. Only once I have seen the guitaris with the closed eyes - during all the performance. I have forgotten his name. He played wonderfully. She plays also wonderfully.
