Rock Crawling at High Desert Roundup 2024
The Roaming Gnomes head to Barstow, CA for a weekend of friendship, fun, good food, and 3 days of 4x4 rock crawling fun! We ran Achy Breaky, Pumpkin Eater and Empire Strikes Back trails. And we helped some folks repair their busted Toyota so they could get back to camp. Good times!

How To Fix an ARB Locker Air Leak

The ARB locker on my Jeep has been leaking pretty badly for a couple of weeks. I replaced the leaking compressor and thought I fixed the problem. But on a run in Kingman a few weeks ago it was still leaking badly enough that the locker occasionally failed to engage. Watch as we diagnose and fix the problem.

We went to Kingman, AZ to visit friends and do some four wheeling. This off-road trail is rated 4 on a scale of 1-5, with mechanical and body damage possible. The rain made it a little harder than it usually is, but we all got off the trail in one piece. Unfortunately my ARB locker stopped doing its thing due to an air leak, so that along with the rain continuing into the weekend cut my weekend...

    I went to an event called, “Operation Desert Fun,” held by Tony Pellegrino. We started out with about 20 rigs and ended up with 5 rigs. A lot of people turned around after 2 rigs broke hard. Tony’s brother was leading with his red Jeep on 40s. There were 2 build jeeps, one buggy, and my Toyota. It was some awesome fun.

    How long is that hitch extension? Is it 2, or 2 1/2"? How much weight do you load up on it? Im debating on making my own aswell, have a 20' boat will need the extension to be about 3', estimate my tongue weight to be about 500lbs, i worry this will be sketchy.

    • @Prescott4Wheeler
      @Prescott4Wheeler 2 месяца назад

      It’s a Class 5 hitch receiver. 2.5” square tube extension about 30” long. It has a 2” square tube sleeved inside 24” long, leaving 6” for the hitch at the end. I tow a Jeep in a trailer. Total weight is about 7,000 pounds. I keep tongue weight right around 600 pounds. I’m less worried about the hitch receiver failing and more worried about the stress I’m putting on the F350 frame. I started using a weight distribution hitch setup about a year ago and it made a huge difference. There’s very little flex in the truck frame now.

      I actually try to do as little lift as possible as possible that allows me to stuff big tires under it. My rear upper axle links hit the tub on full compression and the steering linkage is the limiting factor up front.

    Boggers !! Got my first set 16" wide 35's in 1996. Man, the good old days when people drove real rigs on gnarly trails, Jeeps had 2 doors or less, and lots of really old iron was still being wheeled. I later got caught up in the "arms race", got bigger and bigger, now back to 7.50-16 bias plies on stock leaf springs and having more fun than ever! Thanks for sharing !!!

    Was any part of that an old rail line?

    • @Prescott4Wheeler
      @Prescott4Wheeler 3 месяца назад

      Yes - the part that I called “Smiley Rock” is apparently properly referred to as the narrow gauge rail line. I called it Smiley Rock because OnX maps refers to the whole route from the mine in Jerome, around Woodchute Wilderness and up the real Smiley Rock trail as that trail. I’ve been told by numerous people that that section is not really the official Smiley Rock trail, which I’ve also been up several times.

    Your video brought back some fond memories of traveling the Perkinsviile road to Jerome. My wife and I had dropped our two kids off at a summer camp south of Prescott for the week and we headed north in our 1989 Ford Aerostart. I told my wife I knew of a short cut to Jerome, but I missed the easy paved road. So we headed down the road until we saw another sign to Perkinsvile/Jerome. It had rained the day before and the road was very slick. Even though I was driving slowly, the Aerostar slide off the road into the bar ditch. I stuffed some dead plants under the rear wheels and was able to inch my way back on to the road. About 5 miles from Jerome there was a very large boulder in the middle of the road. A sheriff's Deputy was just finishing putting up a road block and said we needed to turn around. We were on a blind curve and I was not too excited about backing up around that narrow road. Suddenly a small convertible MG pulled up behind us, the guy got out and started arguing with the Deputy that he needed to go around as he wasn't turning around. The Deputy pulled the barricade back and let him thru. Then he looked at me and said, "go ahead if you thing you can". I had my wife get out of the van and I pulled up as close as I could with my right front fender almost touching the boulder. There was a blind curve road sign on the downhill side of the road and as I passed it the sign moved outward at a 45 degree angle. We proceeded into Jerome and to our disappointment all the shops were closed. For many years I use to tell my wife, "I know a shortcut", she would just groan and roll her eyes.

    • @Prescott4Wheeler
      @Prescott4Wheeler 4 месяца назад

      Well, I didn’t even put my Jeep in 4WD so traction is not an issue. I recall a few sections where the rocks might have been 6-8 inches so ground clearance might be an issue. HOWEVER, you can always take Perkinsville Rd (70) all the way to the “Jerome to Williams” Rd (72) and you won’t have any trouble at all.

      Thanks. Several people have pointed that out.
