Monster Tongue Drum!
Here’s our 15-note mini monster, and it’s heading to Israel! I’ve bought a new phone with a great camera, so now not only will we have higher quality pictures, but as you requested (yes, you asked for it, I’m not making this up), I’ll also start recording live sessions from the workshop and posting them in stories. So please, share this video as much as possible if you love our instruments, hit like if you still don’t own a Pulsar, and follow us to keep up with exciting updates from the workshop! P.S. Coming soon: a video about how to isolate harmonics. :)

We created a custom scale for one of my regular clients from Switzerland. I’ve already made 8 instruments for Lubomir, all very different and each unique in its own way. This time, he decided to order a travel-friendly instrument. We managed to fit 15 notes on the Pulsar Mini, and the scale is based on one we developed not long ago. It features a bright and juicy Avocado Cream color, a Triple D...

A Single Ding with 13 notes, and it might seem like a regular major scale, but listen to how interesting and “sharp” the higher notes sound on this sound model. And what’s most important to me is that this instrument is staying in Poland! I’ve made so many different instruments, and they’ve all flown around the world, and so rarely do they stay in Poland, so this one is a 1 for the collection. ...

We have finished this custom mini. It was quite challenging to make this instrument with 15 notes on a small body of only 38 cm in diameter. A very cool and lightweight instrument. Of course, there is some minor crosstalk between the lower notes, but it doesn’t affect the overall sound quality. This instrument will be flying to the USA and will bring joy to its owner. Wow! Can’t wait to play it!
A wonderful instrument, congrats! 😎👍
Great instrument (apart from the color😵💫). Oh, looks like it has the same scale than mine😘 Just uploaded my 2nd video with it and probably more coming😊.
Sounds great! 👏👏
What is up with that one note that that sounds off at 0:49 when played alone but sounds okay when played to getter with other notes? Nice content!
The thing is that technically we can make an instrument with any progression of notes, for example, a chromatic (also called semitone) scale, such as C-C#-D-D#-E-F-F#-G. If you play them sequentially, it will sound "strange" because it’s not harmonious. For the sequence of notes to sound harmonious, we need to choose intervals (the musical distances between notes) and play them while skipping the unnecessary notes. For example, C-E-G, and then we hear a beautiful harmony. That’s why, when designing an instrument with a client, we create and tune a beautiful, harmonious sequence of notes for the instrument. These notes, when played in any order, will always sound pleasant and beautiful, conveying the exact mood the client wants to instill in the instrument. However, sometimes a client seeks something more or wants to combine several moods into one instrument. In such cases, we have to include these "strange" notes in the harmony. This approach offers many advantages but requires understanding its purpose. Otherwise, it may interfere with the meditative improvisation experience on the instrument!
@@yudinworkshop Thanks for the answer!
❤❤ wundervoll!
Love this … nice scale sound and video. Keep these coming :) How well would this likely translate to a mini ? Also out of general interest is there any impact that the different configurations (single, double, triple centre notes) have on the tonality and loudness etc ?
In the Triple Ding layout, we can easily create this sound model for the Pulsar Mini. Yes, of course, all the notes in the sound model are interconnected. Each note vibrates and transmits vibrations through the body, causing other notes on the instrument to vibrate as well. The craftsmanship lies not only in correctly positioning the notes on the body but also in fine-tuning the instrument to capture all these interactions and avoid any unwanted effects.
@@yudinworkshop. Wonderful … many thanks

Wonderful instrument!😍🥰
1st😁 That's a masterpiece and can't wait to unwrap it🤩
Enjoy it! I started with 1 of Maksim's creations and let's just say I have multiple shelves now :)
Great custom scale as well!
Both sound so magical but although with less notes the mini pulsar sounds awesome too and for its little size it's very practice to bring with you everywhere in your spiritual journey... 🌠🌈🦊🌌🦊🌈🌠
Are they all in the same key, just different scales?
All sound models are built from the note C3, but they are all in different keys.
i love this scale
amazing! can't wait to play it!
Sounds crazy, but craziness can be creative. Seemingly no unambiguous key note to the scale, some E-minor, some of both B-minor and B-major, an A-minor-chord, big gaps/intervals in the upper notes, a jazzy blue-note Bb, really wonder what the client's musical ideas are....
Ask him, he's right below in the comments :))
the short explanation was trying to fit some John Zorn and Hania Rani into 15 notes. the longer version is that I wanted both natural & harmonic E minors which enables an almost modal, half tone tonic motion (here with B7-Cmaj7) which appears in Zorn's Tharsis and Wes Montgomery's Twisted Blues, but also more popular songs like the A section of Night in Tunisia (Eb-D) or Miserlou (F-E); a full octave of diminshed (C3 to C4), the Bb works as a blue note, but also gives a Gb major in a E minor sound, which I quite like (i II iv V7). Lastly I got inspired by the Astronaut scale to keep upper notes more spaced. In any case, I am looking to pair the sounds with other instruments, once I can do some recording with it :D also, the percussive and rhythmic aspect of the instrument is as important if not more than the harmony. but it's fun to tickle the crazy side of things the whole process was an unreasonable amount of fun, stressing my amateur knowledge of music theory, and thanks to Maksim for patiently considering my 6+ iterations over different scale ideas and his effort to help there.
@@marmadukenukem Thanks for the extensive explanation, seems like this scale enables versatile stilistic possibilities. Hope you share your results with this instrument to the world via RUclips😉.
Awesome, I want this Mini-scale😘. Oh, seems I've ordered it already before the video😊 I like the color and almost picked it, but I've noticed with my Tonedrum, compare to my Ravs, it's more convenient to have a good contrast with the tongues, mostly playing in dim light conditions. Maybe modding some LEDs inside could fix that problem🤩
tonality sounds nice, though it's quite a riddle to find the principle behind the scale: the lowest note A does not occur again on any other step in the scale. Otherwise a pile of lots of triads...
It's mostly just a C# minor scale with the 6th remove from every octave except the lowest. It's something I experimented with on a piano for a while before landing on this. But at the end of the day it's just something that sounds nice to my ears and fits my style of playing! :)
@@Boolaahh Thank you, that makes sense, i could just retrace it. The omitted note "A" then appears only in the bass as A2. (I guess that confused me a little). Good luck with the instrument!
@@Guitar56man Yea I can imagine without context it looks weird haha. Thank you!
really nice sound! have a small request, if at some point you make take some time to explain how to make use of those harmonics on lower notes? either to hit the octave or fifth above, for instance? it would be interesting for instance, in a drum that doesn't have the F4 but has a C3, to be able to least suggest the F4 sound as the fifth above.
Sure, that's a good idea! I’ll try to record a basic course on sound extraction from the instrument. Hopefully, I’ll be able to explain it well.
wow, amazing playing!
Nice jam
Beautiful playing. I love the sound of the harmonics. I didn't even know that was possible on this instrument.
Отличное звучание! Очень приятный звук!
I thought you're gonna troll us with the start with "All I want for christmas is you " at the end of September ;)
Why do people play that instead of handpan? it sounds so shit! ;>
Nice rich sound!
I've noticed that the mallets seems quieter and certainly more muffled compare to the finger-playing while my Meinl tongue drum mallets are the opposite and have to reduce gain a lot with my microphones. The ball is very soft rubber and the stick very flexy, so do certainly no harm to the tongues if not playing like a show-off rock-drummer and provide a rebound like a drum-kit. I prefer playing with fingers from the sound, but it's more difficult because this rebound helps a lot. Those Meinl mallets produce a more handpan-like sound on my Ravs, which isn't my cup of tea, but I guess that quite some people might prefer it. Maybe too much cross-talk on a tonedrum with Meinl mallets? I will hopefully soon find out😁
It's probably the effect of compression on RUclips, it's quite difficult to convey the natural sound of the instrument through video. You're right, the mallets produce a more focused sound, which makes it a bit louder. I recommend using our mallets, which are available on our website. As you correctly pointed out, mallets need to have the right weight and size to avoid damaging the instrument.
I've ordered the Saffron last night and almost picked the Baltic instead, so if the delivery is quicker with the Baltic, I would switch. The shop isn't really working with Firefox and had to do some tricks adding it to the shopping basket. A scale to each model would be helpful as well.
Hello! Yes, I see your order, and I will ship your instrument today. Both the Saffron and Baltic models are in stock. Could you please describe the issues you encountered on the website in more detail? The weight and dimensions are fairly detailed in the specifications section for each product on our website.
@@yudinworkshop I got an error when adding the Saffron to the basket, which was still empty, but when I've added the Baltic or another from the top, both appeared in the basket again. Can't reproduce it today, just that the basket appears empty after refresh when it shouldn't be.
@@Leynad778 It seems there is a delay in the server's response, as the items are added to the cart, but the cart icon (or its update) doesn't appear immediately. However, the items are indeed in the cart. Unfortunately, this is a server-side issue. But thank you for letting me know, I will look into it more deeply to find the cause.
sounds great, pure fun to listen. good job!
Heya, I'm a bit confused by your website's pulsar creator. It seems impossible to create a pulsar mini. I can only add notes of 70 EUR each, which are for regular pulsar size only right?
I am currently working on a new version of the editor. I will launch it within 1-2 weeks. If you need a Mini, just let me know which one, and I will either send you a PayPal payment request or provide you with the account details. And of course, the price will be for the Mini.
@@yudinworkshop Ah alrighty thanks for clearing that up 👍 I'm still figuring things out for myself right now, so I'm not placing any orders yet 🙃
Очень насыщенный звук, действительно богатое звучание 👍
Wow, the sound is really great! 🥰😍🤩🎵🎶 What do you think: is the sound better because of raw steel and no painting on it?
Well, this is quite a complex question. The Mini is made from thinner and more 'sensitive' steel, so yes, the paint does affect the sound, but it's only about 5% of the overall picture. The most significant factor in this case is the sound model itself, the set of notes. The more octaves, fifths, fourths, and even thirds there are, the more they complement each other, meaning each note excites the harmonics of the neighboring ones. This is why some scales sound a bit dull, while others are very bright. For example, if you create a sound model using only thirds, say a major chord G2-C3-E3-G3-C4-E4-G4-C5-E5, all the notes will strongly support each other, with no conflicting sounds, so it should sound amazing. However, melodically, such a sequence would be quite dull, and the variety of melodies would be very simple. But this might be perfect for sound healers, where the maximum beauty and fullness of the harmonics are important, and the melody takes a back seat.

@@MathIsGreatFun It doesn't matter, the important thing is that it sounds good 😉
Beautiful
Wow! Beautiful. Any chance an existing Pulsar (newer model from 2023) could be retrofitted with one of these?
At the moment, only in my workshop. When installing, the pickup needs to be adjusted with special equipment, so I do not sell them separately for now.
Looks and sounds epic Maksim! Can't wait 😀
Sounds great, now I’m really curious who that artist from my country is 😊
Beautiful! If I was rich, or not so much in debt, I'd buy a pair like this! ;-)
I thought that was your tummy in the thumbnail, disappointed it's not
Oh yes, it really looks like that 🤣
Beautiful and enchanting sound in the Hokkaido model with a sense of mystery. I love each of the tongue drums I have purchased from you. The largest echoes longer and is more responsive in tone production. The options available on the mini and the original tongue drum really involve a beautiful array of notes and tones. The tone drum I purchased most recently is equally lovely in appearance and sonic appeal. I also love how portable it is. You really can’t go wrong with any one of them.🎉
Thank you very much! It's so nice to read such reviews! I am very glad that we are already forming our own community, just a little more and we will be holding our own festivals for Pulsar enthusiasts 😝 Thank you!
Just ordered my Pulsar the other day. Best customer service I've ever encountered! Can't wait to receive it!
If there was an Arabian John Wick, that would be the theme tune. Very cool.
Yes, funny. Thank you! :)
Thank you so much Maksim, this makes me so happy, sorry for the tough challenge but it turned out very good 👍, can’t wait to hold it in my hands 🥰
Sounds amazing indeed - especially when the pickup is involved!
Thank you! Soon it will delight its owner. 😄 I agree with you, the Mini version does lose in acoustic properties compared to the Original larger model, but not everyone needs a loud acoustic sound. When you have a built-in pickup, the quiet acoustic sound is no longer a problem. The main thing is that the pickup itself sounds amazing! 🥰
Hi, the pick up has to go in a box, Right?
@@BiancaBrown-cl8oy The pickup is installed in the instrument, and the pickup jack is located at the bottom of the instrument in a rubber cover. The pickup is not removable and cannot be purchased separately. The pickup is installed by default on all our instruments at no additional cost.
