The Humble Horologist

Добавлен 22 сен 2022
The purpose of this channel is to promote the joy of responsible watch collecting while advancing the philosophy that the most valuable watch in the world is the one that works when you need it to the most. Also, time - not watches - is irreplaceable.
This channel WILL NOT promote one watch manufacturer over another, NOR will it accept ANY incentive meant to sway consumer opinion.
After following other watch reviewers for a couple of years, Dr. Anthony Baker ("DrWatch") decided it was time to add his own humble opinions to the ongoing horological discussion. In other words, somebody wanted to have a reason to make videos and talk about watches with other people who like to talk about watches (even though he knows far more about Theology than Horology).

How to Resize a Casio Bracelet
It might be simple now, but I remember the first time I tried to resize a Casio bracelet. I got so frustrated I handed it over to my wife who was attempting to calm me down.

My Tudor Black Bay Chrono Pink Reaction Video
It's hard to justify when some microbrands are putting out such good stuff, the only time i spent big ( for me) was on a Ollech&wajs c-1000 and ive never regretted it for a second. Achingly cool. The san martin tudor homage would do me fine, cheers.
Thanks for the show and tell. Every time I adjust my links I end up learning a new way of doing it. Be nice if everyone agreed on one method.😊
Here in Bangkok and had a watch repair shop size my gf watch(casio links)Was only 1.50,but still... i saw the links and was like...ummmm but thankfully there are plenty of watch repair places nearby
I never got on with my BB Heritage 41mm. Sold it at a loss after 2 years. So-called chronometer time keeping wasn't anything special, the bracelet was always either too tight or too loose and that particular model was way too top heavy. This guy is right, San Martins are just as good for a fraction of the cost. I won't be buying a 'luxury' watch again anytime soon.
Thanks for sharing :-)
ONE HUNDRED PERCENT THIS!!!!!
Designing a great watch is difficult. Stealing someone else’s design that took many years to perfect and market then building it with cheaper labor and parts is easy. Then they use search engines to get your attention with cheaper prices. To me it’s no different than a fake.
Fair enough. It’s a hotly debated issue.
@@thehumblehorologist6091 I do agree with the premise of the video and that sometimes hyped up watches can disappoint. There are tons of great options at lower prices that have original designs and aren't homages
@@carlos6860 Agree
You should not have been in this hobby. It is your money, you can decide where you are going to spend. But if you love San Martin, then you can never appreciate these watches. You should look for some cheaper hobbies!!!
Thanks for stopping by and contributing to the discussion. However, I might be interpreting your comment wrong, but it comes across as a bit elitist. One doesn’t have to spend a relative fortune on watches to be considered “in the hobby,” do they?
Congrats, you'll save a lot of money now.
Maybe. Have you seen the price of some Casios?
When buying luxury watches, you’re paying for a name, not a watch
You’re not wrong.
I swear, the same thing happened to me when I picked up a BB in a store and was like ... huh? It was underwhelming, despite all the YT's applauding it. Now, I did put on the BB Chrono and that was a handsome, quality feeling piece, but that's where I stopped. I ended up with a 300M Aquaracer which I'm sure everyone will flip their lids over because of the name Tag Heuer.
Seeee! That’s what I’m talking about! I appreciate finely crafted timepieces, but not ones that overall feel no better than a Chinese copy.
This reminds me of when I went to the Omega boutique and tried on a Seamaster 300 for the first time. Very strong "meh" and the thought of paying $6k for it seemed silly. Love my Carerra chrono (used for $2800) but started to wonder how much I really wanted another luxury watch and instead should just enjoy the 4R Seikos and microbrand (Nodus) I already had. EDIT: As a motorcyclist who loves Japanese standards, +1 to buying an homage watch with a Seiko movement and getting a new bike instead hahaha
I own the 41mm version of this watch and the 5 link bracelet on it is the most comfortable bracelet I’ve ever owned, including 3 Rolex watches. I wear it a lot and plan to buy the champagne dial 41mm eventually. I will continue to collect Tudors. Totally happy with all of mine.
Maybe I examined a dud. Glad you’re happy with yours :-)
@@thehumblehorologist6091 I wasn’t sure about it until I wore it for a few days. Now’s it one of my favorite watches to wear. It took a while to get used to the size as well because I’d been mostly wearing 39mm’s at get time.
I think you are supposed to be raptured by the history and horological presence of Tudor. You weren’t really supposed to look at it closely. lol
That’s it.
I found a 2023 Black Bay 36 for $3000 new; what I felt was an unbelievable find! It was the anthracite dial and I thought maybe this would be the attainable Explorer that I had wanted. Unfortunately, that was incorrect. Eventually I found an Explorer 124270 for a reasonable price, bought it, and the BB36 has just been hanging out in the watch box ever since. Expensive lesson learned as I will likely move on from the Tudor. And that’s not to say Tudor doesn’t make terrific watches. I’ve got a BB58 that 100% holds its own next to the Explorer. And I have a 1926 that I LOVE! But in the case of the BB36, I’ll take a pass on it
Thanks for sharing. Enjoy that Explorer!
I have the same exact watch but with hard plastic case. Love it, probably the most beautiful San Martin watch.
I always buy used
Definitely the smartest thing to do when on a budget.
And that is why i went with a Grand Seiko , straight up Quality Japanese Craftsmanship
For sure
Shout out from Cookeville.
Howdie!
I got my first generation Black Bay 36 for $1800. At that price, i was happy, but 4K for the new model is wild.
I have seen good looking pre-owned BB41’s going for between $1,500 - $2,000. If I ever, that will be the route I take.
You aren't spending 4k for the bracelet. I wasn't happy with the bracelet that came with my BB58 so I got a jubilee from Uncle Seiko and put it on there and I couldn't be happier.
All’s well that ends well, I suppose. Glad you’re happy with yours.
Had the exact same disappointing experience recently when I went to a Breitling store and tried on a navitimer. Unbelievable. I prefer my Zelos and Pagani bracelets, which is absolutely insane. But good thing I like motorcycles and steak dinners. Lol
LOL, I guess so 😁
When the snobs stick up their nose to San Martin simply because it’s made in China, I call them fake watch enthusiasts and real racists. Tudor is already one of the better brands from Switzerland. I owned an Oris. I was so surprised by how poorly made the watch was considering the cost of it. If you spend over $100 on a Chinese made watch, you can hardly find anything worse than Oris. The Selita movement they put inside the Oris is not even regulated. The strap split within a week of the use. The bezel is more loose than a Pagani Design. That Oris is called entry level luxury? It’s plain robbery. But snobs still gonna buy them and laugh at the better quality homage watches.
I don’t know if I should like your comment or not! I’ve always wanted an Oris 65 😧 I’d better look closer, huh?
@@thehumblehorologist6091 Yea. I’m talking about Bronze 65. Stay away from it. The bezel is bad. The strap is even worse. The movement is unfinished and unregulated. You are better off with San Martin even if they charge the same price
Being new to watch collecting, I think this is a great option on how to enjoy watches without breaking the bank. I love to get a Grand Seiko someday, but I currently have $500 and less watches that work just fine. I also like the microbrand where you get good quality watches under $1000.
Welcome to the hobby!
K
Apples and oranges. The Duro has history, is a bit more unique being so big, and has name recognition and that cool Marlin logo. The Addiesdive is closer to, or a more obvious homage to, the submariner style - which is fine if you like that, but some don't - e.g. I hate the hands. The Duro is hugely improved with an aftermarket strap and a domed sapphire crystal; the Addiesdive might be a good platform to experiment with modification, but it won't really make it a better watch. Nothing wrong with the Addiesdive at all, "it all comes down to" personal taste, get what you like! The Addiesdive is more fun; the Duro is more widely usable.
Good observations.
Haha, love your humor!
I own both and they each have their advantages. I do admit that the Addiesdive spends more time on my wrist, but depending on what I'm wearing, choosing one or the other isn't a problem because both look great, have been reliable and durable.
I agree.
I have 4 Aknights in light blue, coral red, green and yellow with leather bands. Their also branded by Benyar. I LOVE these watches. They look beautiful and have been very durable over the last year I've worn them. Highly recommended.
Thanks for the personal recommendation :-)
Both superb budget watches , hard too choose between the two . Buy both then you cant go wrong .
Excellent idea! :-)
Very cool! Thanks for that info! It’s also fun to have someone from Russia leave a comment. Wait, does this mean I’m colluding? Are you trying to influence my channel? Should I be afraid? 😁
I don't have a car but I own around 70 watches 😂 Yes, really. I move between three apartments with watches everywhere and they're like candies to choose from every time I open the front door to go out
Candies! They are sweet :-)
CHEAP! And so beautiful
Jesus, it really looks like one of one or two best Casios ever! And it has a story to tell 💖😂
Wearing Swatch Fandango right now
Cool! I have a Swatch Chronograph I wear from time to time.
@@thehumblehorologist6091 I've seen one billionaire who has a collection of like 200 watches, all either luxury or Swatches. He says "You can't go wrong with wearing a Swatch". And no other cheapies. For me personally, man their jelly's in MoMA. That's the definition of the top of the top for me. And their store service is frontier.
Hope the watch is safe LOL
Not a bad emergency watch, and it's a great idea to keep it in in your car. I'm not sure if my local Walmart still has watches. At one time they had a huge watch section, but those days are long gone. On the very rare occasion I'm not wearing one, I feel undressed and incomplete, and I become aware of how many times during the day I check the time. Great story, and I'm glad you survived!
Yeah, about the only thing you can find are George and cheap, cheap stuff. Sad. One time the selection included Marlins.
I would recommend this over the Timex Expedition.
Really? Hmmm.
@thehumblehorologist6091 the Timex Expedition is plastic, plastic case, 50m WR, ticks loud, the only real perks are it's lightweight and the Indiglo. And that casio is cheaper.
Addiesdive good
Casio out
End of the day, Casio is a major Japan brand, whereas Addiesdive is a China homage brand. So, Addiesdive has easily 10 dive watches with varying specs under $100. So, I would spend the extra $20-50 & get a better specd Addiesdive with Sapphire !
*San Martin will do it first.*
I have the blue version, very nice for the price.
I LOVE all of my AKNIGHT/Benyar (pronounced "aknite") watches. The yellow, coral red, green and blue are really beautiful to me. I have the leather bands, which I prefer. Since they're an homage of the Rolex Oyster Perpetual, I wear them to both casual and formal affairs. I have a small wrist, so it fits really well. I think the 3 point end of the second hand looks stylish and in keeping with the logo.
Thanks for sharing! Especially about the pronunciation :-)
That particular Addiesdive watch might not be a clear winner, but for Under $55, there are Addiedive and Steeldive watches that blow away the Casio. My SD1953 has a sapphire crystal, a fully lumed ceramic bezel, 300m WR, and an NH35A automaic movement, I paid only $51. The Addiesdive MY-H3 is similar to the AD2040, but features a fully lumed cermaic bezel for Under $40. The Steeldive SD1970 "Willard" can also be found for $50 to $55,
Just a no-brainer, really.
The prices are around 90usd for those models in addiesdive/steeldive websites. How did you get it at that price?
@@fayadnazim I got mine by going to AliExpress and scrolling through the adverts. The prices varied from one “store” to another. It might have been a sale, too, but I don’t remember.
@@thehumblehorologist6091thank you. Unfortunately AliExpress is blocked in India
So, it turned out it was not eaten by a dog after all? That is a bit disappointing, it'd make a good story. Glad you found it though, the other ones too. 👍
Yeah, finding it with teeth marks would have been sad, but cool.
Nicely done, man! I truly enjoyed your honest and thorough review. Dream big! You never know. I was born and raised in Mississippi. And to quote that kid in Slingblade, "I like the way you talk!"
I have a few armitrons they never let me down, I prefer the Stainless Steel case analog watches they make. Their digital offerings are robust but still below Casio which rules the digital market as far as I'm concerned.
