Buffet Thibouville B-foot
This is a quick demonstration video I made of the 12-key Thibouville Buffet flute prior to its being restored. The only real issue with it at this point as that the low notes on the foot didn't play due to deteriorated pads. The flute is what I would consider a fully-featured French simple system flute with the normal 8 keys plus, tulou f#, low B, high e to d trill, and a LH C key. I'm playing an excerpt from Cottignies Ma Normandie from a manuscript in my collection.

Demo Anon German 6 key, c.1830-40
Просмотров 345Месяц назад
This is an interesting unmarked German 6-key flute which probably dates from 1830-40. It plays very well and has a great pitch range, including A=435 - 443. It has a couple of interesting features, including unusual key caps of the type used by Boehm on some of his 1832 model flutes. I would thus guess that this flute is from the Munich area. It also has what appears to a replaced embouchure ho...

Anon German 1 key flute, early 19thC? (For Sale)

This is a beautiful Anon German 1-key flutes made of boxwood with horn rings and a brass key. It is difficult to date. I find it in the style of the late 18thC German flutes but I think it was probably made in the early 19thC. It plays very well and I particularly liked playing CPE Bach on it, music I consider a good test of a flute's quality. I play this demo at A=440 - note that the flute has...

Positively beautiful instrument! Lovely tone and colours! Thank you for the demonstration!
Thanks- very nice flute!
How delightful to listen to, and played with great panache and skill. Having played the modern Boehm flute since 1974, ('77, Watkinson School and Hartt College), and having only approached the Baroque traverso, Viennese, and other period flutes as historical artifacts, I've recently developed an interest in them as unique musical sounding instruments in themselves, and not merely as "pre-Boehm" flutes. These older system flutes are really distinct human musical devices; indeed I sometimes wonder if calling them "flutes" is somewhat misleading because it draws comparison to modern versions, when they are really completely separate. The difference is even more dramatic than say a gamba and cello, or forte and piano, even though there is a technical lineage. Enjoy these instruments as unique in themselves, and listen carefully to the sound which I find evocative in ways the modern concert flute cannot be by design. Regards.
Thanks- one of the great things about old flutes is the sheer number of different models and then variations on those models.
Did you sell it ?
yes, but I have a similar one for sale www.originalflutes.com/modern-copies/flutes/delusse-1-key-by-etchegoyen.html
Amazing really how two fiddles,a cello and a viola da gamba, not forgetting the virtuoso on the alto recorder, can make such a big sound.Brilliant
This video is fantastic! So informative and interesting
Thanks - I glad you enjoyed it!
Can u send this all across the world
yes, pretty much - send me an email at usstamps@mac.com
amazing 😊
Dear Michael, is there any video like this one with the Bizey model? I mean a long video like this, it would be great 🙏
Hi - this is the current version of the Bizey ruclips.net/video/EAMgTqnVgl4/видео.html
@@MichaelLynnFlute sounds really beautiful! Thank you🙏
@@faridrahmeh8479 thanks - all three models are excellent
I got a week ago my Bizey with 2 middle joints, and i am really so happy about, i am a recorder player and i am still in the learning process of the traverso, but i am enjoying it a lot, and i would like to thank you for you videos… they tell me what i will be able to get from this instrument :)
@@faridrahmeh8479 Thanks Farid - traverso is not an instrument that people get good at quickly, even very fine modern flutists have to work very hard to play traverso really well, so take your time and enjoy it.
Such a soothing sound
Beautiful flutes. Sounds awesome 🔥🔥🔥
Thanks!
Forgive my uneducated question: is the lowest note of this flute already C or still D like in baroque traverso? When did the C become common or standard?
Not a bad question at all. This flute, and still many flutes at this time, only goes to D. Some flutes went to C or even B by the 1830s. The more keys the greater the cost and most music could still be played on a D flute.
Why did you switch from trilling with your middle finger to trilling with your index finger at 08:21?
that is a standard way of playing that trill - the trill charts almost always give the wide version of the trill which is the second fingering. I think that fingering sounds good, and lively, when fast, but not so good when slow. Thus if you have a long trill, which is going o start slowly, it is usually good to use the 1st fingering to start and then switch as it gets faster.
How exactly is this flute's embouchure hole unusual and difficult?
usually an inserted embouchure hole is a rectangular piece of wood fit into a hole of the same dimensions. In this case the sides of the insert are all curved, making the process more difficult, one would think. There is a shot of the headjoint where you can see it.
Which of the three C fingerings are you using on the appoggiatura at 06:17? And also at 08:46 and 08:57?
it looks like the 19thC -2- 456k - I use all three fingerings at various times on this video. They aren't planned ahead of time, it is just a matter of choosing what feels right. I'm happy with it about 95% of the time.
I'm surprised that something that looks very like a baroque flute can sound so different and more like a modern concert flute! Does it have thinner walls? I'm wondering what the difference can be? Great playing BTW, as always.
it may have a slightly bigger bore and tone holes - it is a particularly "open" playing flute
Interesting, so is it slower to articulate since there would be a larger volume of air. I have an Ellis Irish flute which has very thin walls, very large tone holes and is cylindrical and that is noticeably slow to articulate for the lower notes. I’d love to find the ideal flute which is responsive like a Grenser but loud and clear and clear across most notes. Maybe a Palanca?
Stunning instrument! And what struck me the most about it is how loud it can be! I was not expecting that! No wonder Boehm was floored by these english instrument's capacity to produce such large sounds!
Thanks - this flute is from before they really started to make English flutes loud by making larger finger holes. The sound really does jump out of it - it has a lot of resonance which helps it project.
Bravo, Michael! What a lovely sound on this instrument in all ranges. Thank you for this informative and lovely video!!🎶
Thanks Barbara!
Another great video. Thanks Michael.💋
Thanks Charlotte!
Very nice.

Quite impressive ! Thanks for the demonstration !
Thanks!
It’s a keeper!

This Naust copy is the same one that Boaz Berney made or is based in another Naust flute? This one sounds very nice.
different - Boaz makes 3 different Naust models - this was made of an original where only the drawing now exists, or at least no one knows where the original flute is as it was stolen...Naust and his wife where great makers.
These flutes sound amazing. Thanks Michael.💋
Thank you!
Wow, such a rich, full and even tone and response, and solid tuning! If we ever needed proof of the viability of 3D printing wind instruments, this is it!
yes, they are real flutes!
Absolutely stunning instrument!
Thanks Dan
Sounds great to me Michael! What are your thoughts about the instrument? Can you share a comparison with the original in wood? It seems that you can play with a very full sound on it, but then I’m listening on a cell phone. I’ve never heard an early flute with that much volume.
There is actually no wooden copy of this flute and the original no longer exists - evidently it was stolen from someone in a train station. Luckily it had been measured and this flute was made based on those measurements. It does have a nice full sound - some of that is because of the lower pitch of A=400 - generally the higher flutes are pitched, the brighter and less full they sound. Listen to the other two flutes in this series, the 3D Bizey and Tortochot. I think their volume is about the same. All three were recorded in exactly the same way to make comparing them easier.
Thanks for your very interesting reply. So sad that there isn’t an original, but isn’t the flute world lucky to have a beautiful sounding copy! Thank you for your suggestion to listen to the others. I will do that when I get some time. And thank you for always posting such interesting information on the early flute! I fell in love with it when I was working on my flute dictionaries.
@@fluteflaut Thanks Susan - I enjoy doing these videos - lots more I still need to make!
SO GOOD! Thank you!
Thanks Jeff
That was beautiful, thank you.
Thanks Tony
Thank you for this wonderful, informative video. I especially loved the point about the different fingering changed the colours in the early flutes. It illustrates how music in different keys changed the colour of a piece of music, thus changing the colour again should the music be transposed up or down. The whole video is a real joy. thank you
Thank you - the color of different keys on the baroque flute is really fundamental to what makes it such a wonderful instrument!
I love the recorder
That's quite a good sound. Timbre is attractive, and the response seems quite even over the range.
it is a VERY good flute
@@MichaelLynnFlute yes, it certainly sounds like it. That's quite an impressive achievement for 3D printing.

Thanks - glad you enjoyed it!
Wonderful!
Thanks!
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you for this!
Very nice piece
Given that the six finger note is a B-flat at A415, it sounds like an A at A440…. and therefore this flute is basically of the same scale length as a modern alto flute! Though, of course, without the two bottom notes of the modern instrument. Imagine having to stretch that enormous distance with your fingers on a modern alto….
of course one of the big advantages of the Boehm flute being that the mechanism allows the fingers to be closer together where on the simple system flute one has a fairly big reach even on a normal D flute.
@@MichaelLynnFlute I wonder what would happen if one applied the Siccama-flute principles of key extension to a simple-system "alto" flute.... by the way, do you happen to know of anyone on RUclips who does demonstrations of those wild 19th century English flutes that proliferated in the years after the Boehm system was introduced (Carte, Clinton Equisonant, Siccama, etc.)??
Fantastic tone!
Thanks!
