this is actually a very popular song for all demographics which is not an imitation of the western style. btw. i like to observe the reaction of 20, 30 year olds to songs i thought everyone knows before turning 15. it turns out that in the internet era when one don't listen to the radio one's knowledge of music could be extremely selective. e.g. lots of gen-Z learned 'Running Up that Hill' from 'Stranger Things' tv-series, not from original, which is pretty mind-boggling
Hello there! Yes, this song has a very particular feeling that is connecting with multiple generations. When I was in my teens I went through an 80's and 90's music phase and this song really took me back. In my case RUclips has been a great tool to discover new music in this more selective era, taking it back to Kate Bush, this is how I discovered Babooshka in 2019 living in Dominikana, which is not a place where you hear music like this😅 I guess sometimes people get too caught up on only listening to the music that is put right in from of them in things like tv-series, etc.
@thepolishlatina For me, the rateyourmusic website turned out to be the most suitable tool thanks to the filters that generate ranking lists of certain period, genre, place of origin etc. Of course it works on entire albums, not individual songs. I guess thanks to him I discovered 'Yes' group and a lot of music from the 70s that I had never heard on the radio. and even Polish jazz from the 80s, which I have never heard of even though I know a lot of Polish jazz.
@@thepolishlatina I remember listening to ‘what's on the radio’ as a kid, but also a lot of rubbish popular music that could be bought on pirate cassettes. It wasn't until I was about 18 that I discovered radio programmes with progressive rock, alternative rock, gothic, and then in the 90s it was time for metal in all its subgenres. In any case, my taste in music has evolved as I have been able to access other music which in the era before high-speed internet was a challenge. Now almost everything is available for free within a click and the problem lies only in selection
@@thepolishlatina when I was about 22, my cousin who listened to a lot of jazz stopped by and made me realise that I actually had zero idea about jazz, which I had previously associated with music for Polish films and some background for doing housework like Norah Jones. I had no idea of the existence of John Coltrane, Herbie Hanckock, Charles Mingus, Ornette Coleman, which proved to be 100 times better than the jazz I had heard but wasn't on ‘regular radio’. jazz is still not my cup of tea, but this musical ignorance as an adult shocked me. simply put, the peak of jazz's popularity and most artistically prolific period was the 50s and 60s, and genre programmes or radio stations dedicated to jazz assume a familiarity with jazz classics. this is sth for ppl who have already listened to 10,000 jazz albums and are looking for sth new.
With a deep advertiser voice: "Dominican polish, not killing your language here, just trying real hard cuz I love your country"🤣

Jeez, I adore this song. I didn’t expect to see someone reacting to it. Thank you! You perfectly captured the feeling - even if your country is bleak and depressing, it’s still your home, and you won’t let other people slander it. The scene with older people singing the chorus with tears in their eyes always tugs at my heart. If you think about it, these are the people who lived through WWII, saw the atrocities happening here and how this country and its people have been treated. Many of them probably actively fought for independence. After all this hardship, another occupation, this time by the Soviets, came and continued to destroy the country - this video shows what Poland looked like just a few decades ago - poor, gray, dirty, and sad. But it’s still our Poland. Did you catch the reference to the Polish anthem? 'That drunkard who murmurs something in his sleep - that as long as we live, she lives too' (the national anthem: 'Poland has not yet perished, as long as we live'). PS. The pope here is exactly what we’ve been telling you - it’s not even about religion itself but about the fight against communism - the scenes on TV show some communist authorities, workers' strikes, and the pope’s visit to Poland after he was elected. It was a huge symbol - basically, the main reason he was even chosen was that he symbolized Poland's struggles to free itself from the regime. 'The world,' choosing him, was like virtually showing support for the countries behind the Iron Curtain. During communism, the church here was often identified with resistance against oppression (even though a lot of them actually collaborated with the government). For example another famous figure, who helped cteating the image of the church as a fighter for freedom, was father Popiełuszko, who was murdered by the communist agents. Participation in religious gatherings, like youth groups, was seen almost as promoting the spirit of independence. A Pole being elected pope and coming for an official visit here, was like showing a big 'fuck you' to the communist authorities and igniting even more resistance - it was a sign that we had an ally in the 'free world'. And yeah, most younger people (I'd say up to 40 years olds) nowadays are not religious, but for many older people, being Polish is almost synonymous with being Catholic. This is because throughout our history, the church has very often played this symbolic role in the fight for our culture. Sometimes it leads to absurdities, like when the church does something wrong and someone criticizes it, there will always be people who say that this person is not a patriot and is an enemy of Poland. It’s so ingrained in the national identity that for some people it’s hard to separate the two.
@@leno_o17 I really liked how they chose to make this video, it made me feel so connected to Poland and you could see in the faces of the people their feelings for their country. This song is definitely a love song to Poland and shows the resilience of the Polish people. When I first came here two years ago, and being younger I only thought of Poland as a first world country and was so surprised when my fiance's family told me that not long ago things were quite different. I didn't catch the reference to the anthem, but I want to tell you that just yesterday I encountered a recording from the last radio transmission once the Germans officially took Poland, and I cannot imagine what it felt like to listen to those words and know what was about to happen. I feel mad respect for Polish people, especially the older generation who went through that. About the Pope, I didn't really understand the context before, I thought you guys just liked him because he was Polish but what you said made the picture ten times clearer, thank you so much for sharing that ❤️❤️❤️
@@thepolishlatina In 1978, John Paul II became Pope for the first time in over 400 years and who was not an Italian. Less than a year later, the new Pope began a nine-day pilgrimage to Poland, which changed the course of history. Almost one third of the nation came to the meeting with the Holy Father, which took place on June 2, 1979 in Warsaw, while the rest of the country and the world participated in this event via television and radio. Communists were non-believers who did not recognize any religion. and they fought it with all methods. Of course, all reports from this event were censored and many security agents guarded and filmed who attended the Holy Mass. After the Pope delivered a fiery sermon, suddenly 3 MILLION people gathered at the mass started singing the anthem - "We want GOD, we want GOD..." 2 years later, on May 13, 1981, at St. Peter's Square in Rome, there was an attempt on the life of John Paul II, who was shot by the Turk Mehmet Ali Agca.
Polska to najlepszy kawałek tortu na globusie
Maybe Poland is not the richest, the most beautiful, the climate is not particular. But Poland has a soul, it is magical with its history that despite so many suffering, Poles are still ongoing have their authentic history that allowed to release so many misfortunes. Poles can argue and feed on each other, but they will not let the stranger do it. They have a lot of empathy to people in need and at the time of danger they can unite themselves incredibly. Poland - you can defeat it, but no one managed to win the spirit of Polishness❤

imho the reluctance to dress up for the holidays too early stems more from the belief that this is how salesmans act and that they only care about money, not any holiday traditions. that it's cheap commerce.
Hey there! There's def an element of consumerism in a lot of holidays but from what I've seen in DR most people keep the same decorations for a few years, especially since we use plastic trees, we just like to put them up early 😅😅

Historical context : in the 80s, about 1.3 million Poles emigrated from Poland. in 1988 when the song was composed, GDP per capita in the U.S. was 12x that of Poland. annual earnings in Poland were lower than monthly earnings in the U.S. At that time Poles not only had a inferiority complex of a lower standard of living, but also a complex of backward civilization. Only a few decades later, it will turn out that wrongly. The gravity of Polishness is much greater than that of a resident of the Dominican Rep. or the U.S., because there is no cultural or linguistic backup for Poles. American can relocate to Australia or Canada and have virtually the same culture everywhere.
Thank you so much for this comment ❤️ I get what you say, before meeting my fiance I had no idea about Poland (besides some knowledge from WW2) after coming here I'm constantly surprised about the resilience of the Polish people and how much you take care of your culture, I guess that comes from how many times other countries have tried to erase your identity. I am so happy to be able to learn more about Poland and to share what little I know with other people so we can all appreciate it more ❤️
@@thepolishlatina I'm sure the economic situation in Venezuela is worse than in Poland in the 80's, but I don't think that inspires them to similar songs :) as for translating various national disasters into works of art, we are at the world top without a doubt. Jews are better, but they have ~4K years of experience.
The quintessence of Polishness or rather Polish peculiarity has been brilliantly captured in this cult tv-series. there is both pathos and a fair amount of humor, people of different walk of life, diffrent worldview. unfortunately, this ethos is largely gone and has been replaced by a lblatant ack of honor and conformism. at least remained artistic reference point like this ruclips.net/video/WE9CxdnLtN8/видео.htmlsi=oZXCgM4isstaDgQk

Are Dominican racist ?? The question should be what is racism ?? Do people really know that the continent of África is the most racist ?? (Even in countries were they are all negros, classified groups as diverse ethnics when to me they all look the same). In what part of dr would you be considered white ?? I’ve never heard someone with Taino passing looks be considered white ..
Hi there, I've always been aware I am not white as in European (both my parents have dark skin, with some distant light skin relatives) but I've always been called "blanquita" or been told things like "you need to go in the sun, you are too pale"
Has anyone ever heard the saying? "Never marry anyone darker than you", directed to daughters of Latinos! It is a harmful and discriminatory statement that promotes colorism, a form of prejudice based on skin tone, and should never be followed; it is considered racist and reinforces harmful stereotypes about relationships based solely on skin color, completely disregarding a person's character and other qualities!
It's more nationalist than racist and more Afrocentric than Eurocentric in DR.
That's actually a really good take on it, I think for most Dominicans is not about blackness but about being Haitian and the connection between blackness and Haiti so I think you are right.❤️ Thank you for bringing that perspective
@@thepolishlatinaKLK manita! This is what I hear from other Dominicans. They have a different culture than ours. Some of them believe the whole island should be theirs and some of them have nationalistic tendencies. Along with any crime and poverty that any Haitians commit that just adds to those nationalistic principles that many Dominicans share. They are darker than us, so it makes it easy to identify them apart from their accent. So when many people see us discriminating against them and from an American perspective people see it as racism. Even though we have family members that are equally as dark, people will say it's racism because they don't know. It's really nationalism. I'm not defending it, these are the excuses I hear. Anyway, I love being Dominican but I hate the hatred towards any group of people. Quidate por aya. Ya tu sabe.
Yes we're racists. And WHAT??😡
Hay si se ponen hablar disparate de uno sin saber, exagerando como si en estados unidos nunca hubo racismo... Tu me entiendes?
