The Ferrovia Circumetnea, Italian narrow gauge on a Volcano, 2024

Whilst on holiday in Sicily, I decided to take a trip on the Ferrovia Circumetnea, a 50 mile long, narrow gauge railway circling Mount Etna The line run's between the city of Catania and Riposto. Whilst I was visiting, the line between Borgo (the normal terminus of the line in Catania), and Paternò was closed as they were extending the Catania metro to replace the stretch of line. So instead of...

On the 3rd of August 2024, Mamod opened the doors to their factory for their first and last open day. Due to spiralling costs and many other issues, the company have decided to wind down operations and begin closing the business. There is potential that they may continue to produce a limited amount of models at a different location, but we will have to wait and see. But on behalf of everyone, T...

Fawley Hill Railway, Vintage Transport Festival 2024

A visit to the Fawley Hill Estate for there Vintage transport festival on the 18th of May. This was a great event with a wide variety of cars, buses, trucks, traction engines and even a tank! I've been looking forward to visiting Fawley hill for ages, as the 1 in 13 gradient is somewhat infamous, as its the steepest adhesion railway in the UK. When I heard rumours that the railway was potential...

A brief visit to the charming signal box at Epping, on the far east of the Central Line. This is the Epping Signalling Museum. Its a small, volunteer ran organisation dedicated to the preservation of Locomotive L11 (originally a shed pilot loco at Acton works) and Epping Signal Cabin. The site was very well kept, and the volunteers were lovely. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit. www.eppingmuseum.com/

Swanley New Barn Railway Summer Gala 2023
tragic, I never formly grew up around steam, I got into this hobby by chance in my 20s, I as of writing this only just 8 hours ago today on October 31st 2024, I was lucky to find a Mamod Traction Te1a from 2009 in my country of Australia in pristine condition, i will cherish it for all the years of my life, i hope that mamod will atleast continue to manufacture spare parts
Could the OP please say where this footage is from, please? I'm currently trying to put together plans for a 7.25 inch Kestrel and am struggling for anything like scaled plans.
@@SimplexMan the Swanley New Barn Railway
I don’t know if I’m more surprised that they are closing or that they were still in business in 2024! I loved the mamod I had in the 1990s and regularly see second hand ones for sale, I still want the steam roller!
As a Dutchie i own a MM1 & SE3, love those little engines. Such a shame they close the Factory
Lovely video
Thank you!
sad
1:07 Where did Gelert get that 5 chime from?
From what I've been told, its a brand new whistle made for the loco. Not sure who made it tho
Absolutely gutted 😢
Shame......
It looks like this business was on a path to shutting doors for a while. And they have not noticed that 21st century checked in. Steam toys are cool and have their niche for enthusiasts, but that does not mean you need to completely abandon business side of things. A lot great old toy companies doing great when they put effort into business.
How sad is that
So sad to learn of Mamod's demise.
I still have one in a box that I bought in the 70s for my oldest son, it's in mint condition , a shame small engineering is disapperaring, we used to make everything !
My aunt worked here for many years in the 60s and 70s. It will be missed.
Is this locomotive 7 1/4 Inch ?
@@leofranko1694 yep. 7 1/4 inch gauge with a 200psi boiler. Very overkill
So sad, I had hours of fun with my Steam Car Convertible growing up in the early 70's
I saved and saved and saved for my first and only Mamod tractor. That was 1977 when I bought it. I still have it. I hope you manage to bring a limited line back.
I don't understand how this was all down to the fuel being used, surely they could have used some other. All sounds to me, like lots of things have caused it to close down.
That’s so tragic. My earliest memory of a Christmas present was a Mamod steam engine.
This is so incredibly sad, do people even know they exist, what was their marketing like? I can’t believe the children don’t want to have these types of toys, with incredible education value.
Sorry to see this :(
The lunatic UK Government passed a law in 2023 insisting you have a license to own Hexamine (or get up to 2 years in prison). I expect this is what has finished Mamod off. Utter lunacy.
That's a shame. I have two of their engines, a traction engine and a stationary engine, bought in the 60s and 70s. Both working well.
So an alternative firing source had been finalized then suddenly the lease on the premises went up!!
I have a Mamod steam tractor from about 1979, I will dig it out and give a clean
Looking at the people at the open day, not a young person in sight! I guess this is the reason for closure.
That is sad to hear that they are closing, I had one of the steam rollers one Christmas it was my most favourite thing growing up, must have be 12 or something, unfortunately I don't know what happened to it with much regret. I will be turning 60 in January and was hoping to purchase a new traction engine as a special 'gift'
this is really sad , i loved these as a kid as my grandkids do now,
I had and still have back at home a stationary engine and a green traction engine. I remember racing the traction engine around the dining room floor. Will get them out for a play one day. They were purchased from Model Craft and Hobies , Wellington NZ in about 1977.
I have just read that this enforced closure is a result of some Foggy brained goverment officials deciding that the fuel capsules could be used to make explosives. It only took them about 50 years to reach this conclusion. As a result another British icon goes out of business. Is there a covert government dept hell bent on coming up with these crass decisions just to close down our industrial heritage.
definitely looked like the Landlord wanted them out, to probably sell the site off for redevelopment, with all the clauses he wanted in the new lease.
This fills me with immense sadness to see this iconic brand end. What a crap world we now have !
It's simply not fair Mamod has run out of steam! I join all the comments such endless tactile fun which opened the world of appreciating mechanics and engineering. I set my bedroom window sill on fire in 1968, over filling my Mamod Stationery Engine with meths, ah that heady scent mixed with steam. Thank you Mamod and my parents.
I'm completely out of touch because I don't watch the TV these days but would it be possible for a Sir John Harvey-Jones type figure, who featured in the excellent Troubleshooter TV series, to go in and sort out the company's problems? You never know, having brought it to the public's attention there might be successful business people with fond memories of these wonderful models in their youth who would be prepared to invest in the venture to save and expand it. Another great British institution close to our hearts can't be allowed to disappear.
I have a theory: They should have cleaned up and really made their production lean and tidy as a consequence to the higher cost. Follow the Kaisen principle, reduce staff 2-3. I am sorry to say, that the production looks unorganized and messy, not enough systematically ordered and optimizied. Not industrial, but hobby crafting. That would have been the key to survive. Loosing their business is a consequence to a careless attitude towards equipment and laziness of the operators, on all levels.
😥😥
So sad to hear of Mamod's closure , but poignant reminder of childhood. An inspirational primary school teacher and fanatical steam enthusiast in 1960 , allowed a group of 5 of us his pupils , to bring along their Mamod engines for a ' firing up ' in the classroom during one of his brilliant non -corriculum science lessons which I will never forget. Now, ' Health & Safety ' would be horrified but there were no incidents just lasting memories and pure youthful enjoyment !.
If I won stupid big lottery money, I'd keep firms like this alive.
Always remember my mamod steam engine as a kid, best birthday prezzy ever. I used to use it to power my mechano big wheel 💪😉👌 shame to see it closing. Kids are more into ipads, and tiktok these days, sad!
😅Don’t worry,, Hornby Hobbies will be next!! And they dont even compare!!!
What is happening to the Spares? And is there any plans for anyone to take over the name and keep building Mamod Steam Engine's? Please can you let me know? I'm a big fan, I've got an SE3 Twin Engine stationary, And a Traction Engine 👍 Cheers Paul
I've had Mamod stationary engines since I was about 4 years old. I'm 66 now and have 5 or 6 of them, I love them.
i am glad ihave a ton of spare parts for my mamods. i think i have almost everything they have ever made. id buy a steam car oonce a month or everyother month forthe last 30 years. i just got a coupl eof months ago several boilers. shipped from england. some of them are still in the boxes never been run. i sure hope they do not shut down for good i like the stationary steams. i have 4 curio cabinets full of them. cool looking decorations. a year ago i had a few extra dollars so i ordered the last of their stationary 4 to be exact. now what? lol they make a great product
How awful, what a tragedy. I always wanted a Mamod, there was one in the toy shop window, I used to drool at it through the window every day as I walked to school, I never got one though.
I bought a Mamod stationary steam engine in the mid 1960's. The did well to stay in business for so long with rising costs. Many firms would have moved to China.
I think the issue is that those of us who remember and appreciate the workmanship of the toys of our childhoods, (‘50’s and 60’s) are now “leaving the chat”. But our successors grew up with cheap chinacrap and have no interest in “real” models. If it doesn’t involve a video screen and a controller it’s of no use to them. I still have my stationary steam engine from 1964 tucked away. Now I need to see if it was made here.
The problem is the stuff from China isn't crap and Britain and the West should be rising to the challenge to compete with it. The Zero Emission policy, which makes our energy and everything manufactured and produced using it expensive and uncompetitive, certainly doesn't help.
I love my Mamod traction engine, which I probably got in about 1986, but I have to say the quality wasn't great. Just because it was made in England, the old way, on old tools, and therefore probably really expensive to make, didn't actually make it high quality. Most other things are made using modern techniques, so are cheaper to make, and often better made. They might not be built to last in the same way, but could be if that was important to customers. At that point I guess Mamod's products end up being very expensive by today's standards (due to production techniques etc), not necessarily the best quality (unless they improved a lot since mine was made), poorly marketed (so many people on here commenting that they didn't know they were still going), and not coming out with new products (so those who did know they were still going had nothing new to buy). Blaming Chinese manufacturing and products is just avoiding the real issues with our own companies.
@@AJB1 It's the perennial British problem, we're brilliant at technical innovation but we're rubbish at long term investment and global marketing and that's why we don't have an indigenous, mass volume, car production company these days'. Chy-na (I keep hearing Trump's voice when I read China) tools up for mass production with a global distribution network and produces excellent products as a result because it can budget for R&D and sophisticated tooling. Granted we know the vast disparity in living standards for those being employed manufacturing these products gives them a competitive edge but their business model is far superior as is practically everything else. True, there is cheap, horrendously inferior rubbish coming out of Chy-na but there's lots and lots of excellent stuff too. Britain needs to raise it's game if it's to compete and fight back.
These are gone now, too?
Still got me Roller ,I wanted a train but me Dad said you don't need track for a Roller . I am sure he bought my stuff for himself at times . The government will bale banks out ,why not these guys ?☹
Wow, brings back the memories - that was the only thing I didn't have as a child growing up, but one of my best mates did, so all was well!! 😁😁 A sad day for British engineering, but then successive UK governments have NO interest in manufacturing things, We can't even build tanks any more!! 😥😥😥
Truly tragic. Shouldn’t have been allowed to happen.
