Deicide - To be Dead live bedroom bass cover #basscover #glenbenton
This is a deep cut by Glen Benton and Co.
Suggested by @balrogDCLXVI - that's for you man!
As with the song "Serpents of the Light", this song shows the cleverness of song writing by Steve Asheim and the Hoffman brothers. A repetitive riff that somehow sounds different, depending on the drum patterns - absolutely genius!!
Shout out to @rainbowsludge660 , an absolutely mental (in the most positive way possible) bassist and extreme left-field music aficionado.

    Thanks man, perfect as always!🤘Obviously I'm not a native English speaker so I had to look up what does "deep cut" mean in this context, haha 😁That's right, this is a really deep cut, they have never played this one live. I love the different time signatures, 11/4 , 6/4, 7/4 and that twisted bridge in 5/8+7/8 😆 It's really a pity that their never stuff doesn't have this complexity. BTW, what gauge pick do you use?

    • @morbidalex666
      @morbidalex666 5 дней назад

      Thanks man! I enjoyed doing this! I don't know much about time signatures - I go by feel. But how the hell Asheim doesn't get confused???? I do miss these oddities from the newer stuff. It somehow made their music more "dangerous" in my mind. For this, I used a .73mm tortex pick. All Benton picks that pop up on ebay seem to be .73, so I figured I'd use the same. The strings are also 50-110, which he prefers. I know that because he told me himself on instagram.

    • @balrogDCLXVI
      @balrogDCLXVI 4 дня назад

      @@morbidalex666 I don't understand how the f_ck is it possible to play fast tremolo lines with such a thin pick. For me somehow it gets stuck on the strings, it just doesn't glide through smoothly, I feel there is a crazy amount of friction. A thick pick (Dunlop Stubby Triangle 3 mm😁) feels much more smooth to me, requires much less effort for fast lines. I know they say picks are up to personal preference, but on the other hand it is physics, which is pretty much objective. Have you ever tried such thick picks?

    • @morbidalex666
      @morbidalex666 4 дня назад

      @@balrogDCLXVI Agreed on all your points! But it's both physics AND preference. I have tried every pick under the sun, back in my guitar playing days. What I have found is that if the pick has a noticeable bevel (like your stubby, the Jazz 3, the thick ultex picks and many others), it appears to have less resistance. The bevel makes the pick slide over the string. While doing that, it looses attack. And I can't have that. The amount of resistance presented by a thinner, non beveled pick relates to how much of the pick tip the player uses to hit the string, the angle that he/she holds it, the flex of the pick etc. It just demands more discipline, as I see it. I hit the string with just the tip, at a slight angle and I feel comfortable. I also enjoy the tone, the sharp attack and the little amount of scratchiness I get. And that is my preference. I remember I did "Homage for Satan" with a 0.88mm tortex - and that one have some really fast tremolo lines too. Maybe I have done some other stuff with a 1mm, but not any more. When I use a pick, it's either a .73 or a .88mm and that's it. Good luck with your pick journey man! 👍👍👍👍🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘 I really enjoy talking about this stuff - I'm open to further discussion!!

    • @balrogDCLXVI
      @balrogDCLXVI 3 дня назад

      @@morbidalex666 Yes, the thick beveled pick has definitely less attack, that's the tradeoff. I think the key must be hitting the string with just the tip and I'm quite sure I stick the pick in too much, so I will pay attention to that. Thanks again for the tip on the tip! 😁

      Pinard is the reason I got my first Spector bass!! There is a vid of him playing at a NAMM show in 2020. I remember watching it over and over, jaw dropped by the ferocity of his playing and drooling over that beautiful Spector Alex Webster model. Sometimes I get a bit angry that he gets buried in the mix of Cattle Decap. There are tasteful licks all over Death Atlas and Terrasite, that aren't even audible!! In the occasional part that there is just bass and drums, we can hear the truly devastating tone. Thank you for the support, man!! 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘

      @morbidalex666 26 дней назад

      Hey, thanks!! Yes, Chuck did record the bass for the first 3 Death albums - with a pick too. He had incredible sense of rhythm IMO. He locked in with the kick drum and gave the beat so much energy!! I sometimes wonder how Leprosy and Spiritual Healing would sound, if Butler actually did the recording. Live footage of the era shows him playing fingerstyle.... 🤘🤘🤘🍻🍻🍻

    More Death! This is awesome. And from my favourite album of theirs. Love your own touches to this too! I tried playing along with songs from Leprosy a good many years ago and I really struggled to endure. The riffs maybe simple but the endurance required is anything but easier, despite how you make it look. 03:59 : Extensor muscles fully activated! Another solid, inspirational demonstration of total metal bass. Thank you my brother! 👊🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘👊

      I still remember reading the lyrics to Open Casket, Pull the Plug and Leprosy and being genuinely shocked by the brutal realities Chuck showcased!! The riffs are simple, yes. But, the energy, man, the youthful energy!!! It's something else!!! I didn't have to play it the way I did (fingers, extra notes). But that's how I felt it at that moment and that's how it went 😂😂 I bet if you try and play them now, you'll have no problem at all 👍👍🔥🔥 Thank you so much for the nice words man!! Death! You've given this classic even more life than it already had! Love the use of the plectrum and this bass, almost seems to accelerate/propel the song. It's refreshing. Is there a twang of chorus too? You're machine gunning these out brother with unrivaled skill. 👊🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘👊

      Hey, brother!! The mighty P-bass delivers once more!!!🤣🤣🤣🤣 Like I said before, it sounded way too strange to me without the plectrum. I didn't add any chorus. Though, since I wasn't able to completely remove the original bass from the track, maybe there is some natural chorusing effect between the two bass tracks? I just wish I had a bit more time, man! I know I will not be able to upload anything new this week....😡😡😡 As always, thank you for the support!! You're the man!!👊👊👊👊🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘

    Surperb Brother!! Extremely satisfying to watch and hear of your 6 stringer. 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘 You seem to have no trouble switching from 4 - 6 strings. But how? 😅 You're right hand must have the thickest of tendons to deal with the rigors of these Cannibal covers. Excellent, flawless work as usual! 👊🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘👊

    • @morbidalex666
      @morbidalex666 Месяц назад

      Thank you so much, man!! 🙏🙏🤘🤘🤘👊👊 For me, switching to a 4 takes some getting used to - I feel like something is missing 😂😂😂 I like a big neck, both for the feel and the sound. Maybe I'm opening a can of worms here, but I am convinced that big neck results to bigger sound. Anyway, I digress. This 6-string has a relatively narrow but thick neck and only 16mm string spacing at the bridge. That tight string spacing gives me more hard time than the large neck. Funny thing is that I bought it with the intend to convert it to fretless! Once I heard the unplugged sound though, I instantly regretted it. So I kept it fretted and use it as a 5-string. Maybe, some time in the future, I'll be able to do something with that 6th string... 👊👊👊👊🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘

      @@morbidalex666 It always looks and sounds like you have total domination over any bass you get your hands on. I didn't realise the importance of wood quality on spund resonance and, like you said, potential size of neck, until I started playing that huge fretelss beast. I must admit, the neck on my Ibanez is so big it makes playing higher up the neck troublesome for me at times and can result is very minor hand injury depending on what absurdness I'm attempting. Excellent work once again man!!! Just listened to it again through speakers and the mixing is spot on (as always). Great Cannibal song too. It really shifts along. Looking forward to your next one! 👊🤘 I'm struggling with time management/work at present and now I've started to work out/dismantle the next cover it's proving to be a total Bastard to unravel. @@rainbowsludge660 Yeah those Ibanez BTB models are probably the opposite of what some one think about Ibanez 😂😂 Not the lightest instruments, nor with fragile skinny necks!! That said, both my Spector 5-strings have thicker necks still. The blue one is thicker than the natural finished one. I hear you about time management - mine has gone completely out of the window!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣 The things you say about your next cover intrigue me.... Looking forward to your next one, whatever it is. I won't even bother guessing - I will never find it😂😂😂😂. Mine is going to be a return to the old plectrum..... 👊👊👊👊🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘

      @@morbidalex666 Time management and fatigue are killing my gains in covers 😅 but something is gonna give and it ain't gonna be us brother! 👊 Yeah, the fretless can make my left shoulder ache if I've lost track of time, because I always play stood up, just due to angle playing preference (the weight at least slows my twitching and wriggling around 😅). The next cover involves a Britsh band but with an amazing Greek Power metal-like vocalist! Very much looking forward to your plectrum cover! Does the plectrum get used to allow for a different sound or to allow for greater speed, or both? Many of my favourite bass players play with a plectrum

    • @morbidalex666
      @morbidalex666 Месяц назад

      @@rainbowsludge660 A British band with a Greek Power metal vocalist???!! Interesting choice to say the least!! About the plectrum: let's just say that it would sound really strange (to my ears at least) without it. Plus, I haven't used it in a while and it would be nice for a change. The song is old and not particularly challenging, but it's the only one I could think of - this week, my free time is especially limited 😡😡😡😡 On a side note, my woman saw me holding a pick last evening, while I was trying to learn the song and said "Pick? Not your style..." At the same time, the baby was pulling the instrument cable from the jack and trying to hit the bass with a toy. That comment was the cherry on top🤣🤣🤣🤣
