Traditional Banjo Setup
Просмотров 24228 дней назад
Grab a drink and let's set up our banjos! This is how I set up my banjo as a traditional player and a student of Clifton Hicks. Every time I change my strings, I use F-One Fretboard Oil. I use a custom set of La Bella strings that Wovoka recommends. I do not like no. 17s and have not had any luck with other manufacturers. My favorite strings are Aquila Nylgut, but I find their wound string just...

Practicing on the porch in the first days of autumn (Dacw 'Nghariad)
Просмотров 82Месяц назад
It is a beautiful day for some practice before work. Autumn is finally rolling in, and the dawn's mist and cool air make this earth's greatest pleasure. I am working on this nearly magical Welsh folk song, Dacw Nghariad. I first heard Eve Goodman's (inimitable) version years ago, then learned I could sing/maybe play it one day myself from my friend Thomas. Andy of @cerddoriaethfynyddig made tha...

Frankie & Albert (Clifton Hicks; Nora Brown; Wovoka)
Просмотров 1423 месяца назад
I learned this song from a few sources. First, Clifton Hicks of Copperhill, Tennessee. I also learned it from listening to recordings of Nora Brown of Brooklyn, New York. Crucially, I learned it from Wovoka of the Confluence. I believe all these artists trace their lessons back to George Gibson of Knott County, Kentucky, who reportedly did not play it often. By all reports, the song is based on...

Day two of Frankie and Albert. It is a lot easier now but I still have to figure out the second part where I mess up every time. Something is missing! I also need to learn the lyrics in the second half
Sounding Out Frankie & Albert

Working on a new song, Frankie and Albert. It's not pretty but I want to document the process. I learned the tuning from Wovoka. Trying to fix my hand position. The weather has finally cooled down here and it's lovely out.
Just Practicing on a Rainy Day

Just practicing. Olivia (@oliviahartland) recently corrected my left hand position and she is so right; I'm working on changing my muscle memory. I think this will open up better playing. I'm getting to a point where I understand advice a little more and the mechanics make more sense. I've also been able to truly listen to music better I can hear things and connect the dots more easily than bef...
Bonnie George Campbell (Clifton Hicks; Richard Alexander)

This song is dedicated to my friend and neighbor, Barbara Jo Timberlake of Wake County, North Carolina and to her Bonnie George, David Timberlake of Timberlake, North Carolina. Mr. Timberlake was a reenactor with the 1st NC Cavalry and was an avid outdoorsman, husband, and father. He passed away unexpectedly in 2002 while out riding his beloved horse, Jake. For me, this ballad has always been a...
Pretty Fair Damsel (Clifton Hicks; Thomas Owen) - Minstrel Banjo
Просмотров 1074 месяца назад
I am playing on a Don Garner reproduction of an 1850s Levi Brown minstrel banjo purchased from my friend Chris. It has geared tuners and a slotted headstock. It has 7B Nylgut strings and a bridge I inherited from Chris. There are only three known actual Levi Brown originals in existence as far as I know this is a reproduction. I play here using the traditional two-finger style in "Double C" tun...
East Virginia (Clifton Hicks) on Banjourine
Просмотров 1204 месяца назад
I am playing on a Bay State 309 crafted by John C. Haynes. This is technically a banjourine, which has a standard pot but a shorter scale neck. This size is excellent for travel and was once very popular with ladies and children. The 309 used to belong to Chris Kennedy, as his name and social security number are etched into the pot. I acquired the 309 from an eBay auction and restored it to pla...

Bonus Round: Can anyone identify which RUclips creator's banjo is in the left corner of the video? 👀
Sounds great, but the audio seems off
It definitely is. This was my first time trying a mic with my camera. You are welcome to help if you can! Any tips or places to learn?
I'm using a Rode mic with a Nikon D750.
Practice may makes perfect 👌 👍, however your banjo playing is what makes you perfect 👌 👍 🥰.
Awww, shucks! Practice sure does, though I haven't seen perfect yet!
🎼💚🪕🎶😌🎶🎙💚🎼
This is good 👍. I’m trying to learn it now with varying degrees of success.
Keep at it! Once it comes, it becomes very easy! I have some other videos where I practice close-up which might make it easier to see; that may help. I hope you'll pop by and let us know when you've got it!
Gorgeous restoration, and incredible settings, Mads. You always add a woman's touch and a labor of love ❤️ to your precious ✨️ personality.
What about parchment or leatherhead that 🤔 were also 🤔 used before the plastic head?
Hmmm, I'm not sure about this. I have not heard of parchment heads, but I prefer calfskin. Some folks like goatskin too. There are also lots of good reasons to have a plastic head, but I try to avoid it.
@@chickenindoubleCthe Joseph Rodgers Jr heads that we all rave about are parchment. I believe you mount a parchment head in much the same way, because it’s a processed hide.
Really nice video Mads! You two make a great duo.
Thank you Kyle, I love singing with Thomas, he's a fantastic musician.

You know it!
Great! Thanks for sharing!

This is awesome! ❤
I am sorry for misspelling your name!
@@chickenindoubleC No worries!
Wonderful video!
This is fantastic! Another great production and resource for the banjo community!
Thank you!
Perfection.
Hardly, but if there's any perfection to be found here, it's in your chimes. Your music really makes the video; thank you for offering it.
Great production on this Mads, well done - This will come in very handy for me, as I'm sure it will for others too! Keep making these, I've not seen any other videos in the community that have this sort of feel. (Also, Glad my boy Mango could be of crucial assistance in this trying time of ground-breaking experimentation.)
Thank you! Ha, yes, he was very..."helpful"...
I🎉love ❤️ it, Mads.So much relaxing 😌 😎 😴 👌 ☺️ too.
I'm so glad! Hopefully I'll be able to play it far better in a month!
Dear Mads, can you please send me the following heads that you used up trying to get putting on your beautiful banjo? I want to try to gluing calf skin on to my plastic 🤔 banjo heads. Better than wasting. Willing to buy too.
I certainly would, but my dog ate them! You can by them for about $20 from Bob Smakula at Smakula Fretted Instruments online. He is a nice fellow and will help you out! Maybe he has scraps too!
@chickenindoubleC Thank you, Mads. I will. Good 👍 luck 👍 with your re skinin your beautiful banjo. You know what, I want the same banjo you have. Same everything.
@@CarlosVazquez-p4c Godspeed, I hope you find one! It is a Bay State 351!
Very good work. The banjo repair and the video.
Thank you!
I am only a third of the way in and I have already learned so much! This is a gem! Top tier banjo content.
That's high praise, thank you!
Always good to have a spray bottle handy with water in it in case it starts to dry too quickly. Tom in Idaho
Thank you for the advice, Tom! Why would you need the spray bottle, and what are the signs/when do you know to use it? Thank you!
Amazing story behind that banjo and its previous owner. I’d say that you honor them very well. Thanks for sharing!
That means a lot to me. The stories and the life behind the banjos are part of what makes them so incredible. Honoring them is what it's all about, and there is no better way than to play their instruments!
Great video Mads! This is a must see video for anyone wanting to tack the task of re-skinning their banjo. Bravo!👏
Thank you, Narcan!! I was inspired by your Beginner Banjo videos!
I’m highly impressed by this production. And I’d say it takes a good 3-4 attempts to really start to get the hang of mounting a flesh head. Don’t be scared, yall. The full setup with a new head should take about 48 hours, in my experience. Great walk through.
That means a lot, Blaine! The video is yours as much as it is mine. Yes, it is not bad at all!
The cinematography, this whole video just feels pleasant and homey. Well done!!
Thank you, I'm glad you liked it! Might as well enjoy a drink and a candle while you curse your birth after your banjo head pops the third time...

What an awesome video, Mads! Top notch production quality.
Thanks Trout! <3

Sounding good Mads! I have no idea what you are saying but it sounds good. I like your higher registers at specific notes here.
I will be sure to post the lyrics and translation when I make the "final" version. I'm so glad you like those parts haha because I'm quite shy about them
I'm proud of you for trying ....
🤣 Thanks Aunt Gladys!!
I really like this song It reminds me of John Fahey when he plays Dream of the Origin of the French Broad River I played a song for you on my channel of Yann Tiersen comptine d un autre ete
I'm so glad you like it! I like it too--it's one of those sad songs I was telling you about that are good to hear even though they make you sad. Thank you so much for the recommendation! You have great taste in music. Wow, thank you for posting that for me! Amazing!
Owain Glyndwr would have loved to see it 😞 Sounds great!

I like you singing and the finger picking. (I didn't get any notifications of you tagging me, maybe that's my account settings?) I love that you're sitting wherever you are, with a bat (ystlum) flitting around, learning to sing an old song in Welsh! The world is doing alright I think. Thanks for sharing! 😊😊😊🙏🙏🙏

This is so pretty, wish I could hear your voice a bit better but gosh I love the calm, soft way this is played. Learning myself now and would love to play pretty fair damsel this way :)
Thank you so much, that is so kind! Thank you for listening. I'm working on audio recording and projecting better without losing the softness. Please give it a shot, it's a great song to play! I have another video where you might be able to see my hands more easily to learn!
Love the story and how it's told!
It's a beautiful classic! When I heard Nora Brown's rendition I couldn't stop listening.
