I got buried under a pile of 1980's junk and wires, every now and again I can see through the gaps and touch the future.
The Horror Of Armored Core
I tried to get this done before, but real life sigh.....anyway it might still be Halloween for some of you, plus I still consider it a horror weekend, so you can watch this with whatever your fav horror movies are, anything from the 80s and 90's is usually a good choice, I think I might watch one of Jason movies and Halloween 4, anyway this video is about the odd few horror related missions you find the in the AC series, I covered a few but there are more, but that's for you to discover!

Rly wide cheese
Imagine if they actually made mods for this game. The first thing that would go out is the stupid scout mode blue green tint.
„There is more in 9 Ball.“
Picked this up on sale about a month ago and I’m honestly shocked I never hopped on the bandwagon when it first came out. The online MP is still shockingly active; highly recommend trying the Frontier Defense mode. It’s like a horde/tower defense crossover but with the insanely addictive movement and gameplay.
Yeah this sat in my backlog for ages, I did actually play the first game when it came out, but never jumped on 2 till way late. The only reason I haven't jumped on the MP is I simply only have time for one MP game, that being GBO2 a Gundam game, my younger self would have been all over TF2 MP, the game is just a great package for both SP and MP, a rare thing these days.
Never forget creepy crawlies in AC are technically building-sized, with the boss types being around the size of a small city block. 😉🤮
LOL that's a scary thought.
Armored core 6 was my first AC. I came from playing the souls games and elden ring. After playing the older ACs. The souls games have had a negative effect. Its a night and day difference. Verdict day and before all had their own identity and felt unique. 6 feels like mecha souls and sekiro. It doesnt feel like the old armored cores. You can feel the souls influence on it and it honestly nearly killed the game for me. I no longer play 6 with the soundtrack they have, i put on the older games soundtrack. 90% or more of AC6 soundtrack is just ambience. Forgettable ambience. And 3 good songs. Well 4, i like the carla fight song. But thats it man. I even confused one soundtrack for the elden ring ambience in limgrave. The mission where you fight rusty after depth 3.
Well the game is made by the same director as Sekiro so that's why it feels that way. AC6 OST does have a few good catchy tracks. I still don't understand why FS never released a AC legacy collection for newer players to enjoy the franchise, rather than pay silly ebay prices for OG discs, or have to use emulators. Cool that you went back to check the series out.
@newtypepunk9967 the rest I emulated, my only physical copy is AC4 and I got that at a retro games store. Still expensive but i was desperate at the time lol.
@@Br4ndino1727 Oh now that takes me way back, AC4 was one of the first games I played on PS3, nice that you picked that up. Yeah most people just emulate older titles in general.
I LOVE ARMORED CORE 2 AA, I'll beat it someday
Yeah it's a long game, I beat it very slowly, bit by bit.
Hey, it’s a fun one, as a long time oldgen player. Do beat it, it feels relieving when you do beat the 3 bonus missions too. Ps: I have beat in many ways, it’s just so replayable imo… maybe because it’s my first AC game though. To date I’ve beat in normal, hard, beat with only rockets (those are dumbfire), beat as a pure glass cannon, and almost beat it to date with a cannon build. I can tell ya, you find creative solutions for things when you self impose restrictions
@@AvgGamerGuy15 it was my first one as well and there are some sharp difficulty curves but thats the fun of it trying to figure out why you suck
@ exactly! The rocket run ended with the final bonus mission feeling easier than the first one just because bigger target, even though it’s faster. (I’m being spoiler free on what they are, but you will get there soon enough)
@AvgGamerGuy15 oh I can bet I'm in for a fun time but until them I'm gonna be forever rematching this fucker in the arena
AC1 had a shit ton of liminal spaces and creepy themes. And yes, I did have a bit of PTSD when watching all of the No.9 Ball stuff. *eesh*
Yeah the liminal spaces mixed with the PS1 draw distance just happens to create this feeling of emptiness.
H-1 didn't exactly go rogue, it's still going by its directives. Now, if you want an AI that's gone rogue, look at Chief.
"Thuh ammaed core series is known fuh it's amezzin mecha akshun - but beneath thaht cold haad metal is truh hoah." XDXDXD
This also reminds me of The Crossover art of MONSTERHUNTER and armored core
Ha when you put those together you basically have Lost Planet.
Another great review, mate. 8:24 this is good to know. I’ve always kind of avoided the game, because I was afraid maybe the game wasn’t worth it if I had no interest in the multiplayer. It’s so inexpensive though and your high marks have inspired me to add it back to my wishlist. I also really enjoyed Doom 2016 and high mobility combined with mecha just hits that sweet spot for me.
Yeah this game is always going on sale for less than a bus ride, it is well worth it, the only problem people have with it is the annoying EA launcher, but the game itself is an amazing ride, what games used to be in the ps2/3 and 360 era, just pure fun. Oh if you're also a fan of Doom 2016 then this is going to be right up your street for sure, TF2 is easily one of the best FPS ever made, the SP is only over shadow because games like these are usually about the MP, TF2 just has both that are really good.
I really miss this game. It was a joy to play with a mouse, even if I was at a bit of a disadvantage against the controller players. I really wish there had been some kind of offline bot mode so people could at least still enjoy its gameplay. Great channel you have. I’ve been going through your videos on anime and they’re top notch nostalgia. Great work.
Hey there. It's funny you say that about the mouse, because this is the only game where I used a mouse on PS4, and for me it actually improved my skills on the game, I could never go back to using a controller after lol. I have no idea why SEGA never brought this game to PC, where players are starving for some mecha action, with only mechwarrior and more recently AC6 being available, that's not enough, with the great MP this game had, I'm sure it would have done well. On the other hand yeah it being MP focused means when it dies, it truly dies because theirs no SP content. Thanks for checking out my older videos, it's very rare someone even does that, these old videos are forever locked behind youtubes algorithm so don't really get views anymore, but I keep them up so people can remember things like border break and old school anime and how great they were. Again many thanks for watching.
@@newtypepunk9967Maybe if I practiced longer I would have become more proficient with mouse play. I am only mid-tier after all. 😅 I think BB was an unfortunate victim of being released at a time when mecha games were in a lull or just unpopular. If Sega would have kept it online for just a bit longer, with the success of AC Rubicon, it might have given it a renewed player base. I think BB also needed a balance overhaul though. It always felt too far into the pay-to-win spectrum. A re-launch with a single player story campaign and more aesthetic focused monetary element could have gone a long way. I guess I’m unusual with regard to older content then. If I find an interesting video from someone I usually like to dig through their back content. Thanks for the reply. Cheers
@@Mid-TierMechaPilot Ha well yeah practice makes prefect, there are some games that just feel more natural using a mouse, I have been a PC gamer for many years, so I guess that helped. You're right it started to become pay to win, that is usually the death toll for any free 2 play game ,once you lose the core players and just have the pay pigs left, the game will die off, it's happened to multiple Gundam games over the years. Which BB also launched at the same time as GBO2 that didn't help it either , because I saw a lot of players drop BB for GBO2 because well it's about time, we don't have endless time like these companies think, I myself in the end dropped BB to play GBO2. A re-launch could have helped yeah. Ha yeah not many people like you, I had one guy apologize for leaving a comment on an old video, I told him it's no problem, he probably felt out of place doing it, so yeah it's rare.
the fact that banging noise in that facility is never explained nor do we ever find out what was causing it leave the mind wondering about what it could be.
That's true. The whole facility is just this mysterious place with many un answered questions about it. You get a haunted house vibe from it.

I hope the next ac is not made by fromsoft they said ac6 wasn’t going to be a souls like and that ended up being a lie
It wasnt a Soulslike.. it was more like a fusion of Armored core 4 and 5
how tf is ac6 a souls like?
Someone with their head screwed on straight I see… ac6 removed 90% of the fun from AC, and did a copy-past-rename of the flask, as well as heavy compression of combat ranges. That, plus the boss focus. Anyone who thinks it’s not a soulslike, my condolences to your braincells… I’m a long time AC player, and although it took major inspiration from 4th and 5th gen, it is more DS than AC due to the reasons above. Not a pure souls game, sure… but this is close enough to call it a soulslike that uses mechs. For further proof, go play Gen 1-3 and try telling us smart folks that ac6 is not a Soulslike. I mean this comment too, so please don’t get mad about me stating the obvious Edit, forgot to mention the STAGGER BAR, the one most infuriating thing in ac6, and frankly the only challenge I had
It's not a Souls like.
@ not 100% yea, but can you provide proof it is not more souls than AC? I’d honestly love it if I was able to be proven wrong, but that seems impossible on a game mechanics level. Repair kit = Flask, huge focus on CQC, with targets outside of 300 meters being impractical to hit for real damage, lots of stuff hold you still that did not in EVERY OTHER AC MADE like bazookas and linear rifles. I’ll give a point to melee for detail, but that comes at the cost of so much. And how can I forget Stagger bar? That’s straight out of Sekiro (made by same director btw), then you have hard lock, which is a huge thing to balance around. And you cannot forget that turning speed removal takes a large piece of weight balancing out. Now tanks can take potshots at a LW moving full speed near them and actually hit with minimal skill. And you also have a massive focus on bosses, which is souls thinking. It’s story is different, and it has the modular system of older games, but in terms of gameplay, it is NOT AC, and almost worry of the title Soulslike, with the only bit preventing that being the building method and overall 3 dimensional combat
Ah yes the giant spider in the sewers, part of the reason why I have arachnophobia (well more of fueling what was already there).
LOL, All I can say is if I ever saw a spider that looked like that even if it's small I'm running.
Need to say, Armored Core Gen1-2 world one of the darkest in entire series, the only thing what can compare with it is Silent Line manga about Nine-Ball gen 3 analogue with more detailed doppelgangering and Nexus ending with Last Raven setting.
*Cue the SpongeBob baby coaster clip*
Silent Line had that one mission where you enter a satellite in space, and the idea that there's just abandoned space stations orbiting the earth from a civilization long before yours just kinda unnerves me
I remember that mission, pretty sure you had to fight an AC at the end of it, the place looked epic. Yeah it's un settling that something like that is just floating up there unmanned.
I mean in AC1 you also visit a satelite thats firing stuff down from space WHEN EVERYONE IS LIVING UNDERGROUND
@@lesslighter Yeah I remember that level too, in fact there are a few missions in AC1 where you go to outer space. It's crazy how much stuff the first game had.
I remember the first time playing armored core 3 on psp, which is also my first time playing the AC series. and when the intro played, I thought it was a Horror game when the first thing it showed in the intro was an eerie eye of a crow (which is actually a raven)
LOL Those are exactly my thoughts, I thought it was a crow at first too, but obviously ravens are what AC uses, it is one scary looking raven for real, it could easily fit into the intro of an Resident Evil game, all it's missing is a bunch of zombies.
@@newtypepunk9967Zombie ravens
The scariest thing about armored core is how dehumanizing it is, you kill thousands of manned MTs and other vehicles which sometimes require more than 1 person to operate and all we see is just bits and pieces after they explode. Not a single trace of humanity left in this games. There arent even faces to any of the characters
Hmm yes AC has mostly kept the human aspect in the background, it's rare to actually see a person, I've pictured in my head that human plus people probably look like borgs lol. It was interesting in 5th gen when we saw that humans were living in underground tunnels, which btw you also destroy lol. I think FS do it this way because they want the player to focus on building AC and not characters.
The very first mission of the first game is killing construction workers because they want a raise lmfao
@@bombomos LOL yeah that is pretty cold tbh.
There are human enemies in Last Raven
AC-130 crew and tank crew, drone crew All the same thing, there is no humanity to war when you are a merc behind a screen.
that last part is creepy
Yeah very much so, like I said it very much reminds me of silent hill, you just want to escape the place.
As someone from the Battletech fandom, slipping a little bit of Horror into the mech pilot power fantasy is always fun. Reminding someone in an armored mech suit why we feared the dark.
I admit that I don't know too much about Battletech but I do know that the lore goes very deep, so that's cool it's got horror elements. Yeah exactly, even in a mech suit you should be worried about going down into some dark dirty sewer to find a missing team and what lurks in the shadows.
The Black Marauder
where can we ply A.C now on steam only A.C6 sadly, my goal is to play the game with FreQuency
5:45 As someone who suffers from arachnophobia, I was quite surprised by the boss fight. compared to the rest of the series
Yeah I can't say I'm a big fan of spiders either. They tend to be mostly bosses in RPG/Fantasy games, but a mech game? lol yeah AC must be the only one, it surprised me too.
Oh my God! nine ball! Dude younger me did have nightmares about this guy! It took me a hundred times to try to beat this guy! Even with human plus he's still hard to fight!
Yo Maxthunder, yes nineball is the stuff of nightmares, yeah even with human plus he is a challenge, he has wrecked me many times too, double moonlights, ability to transform, FS knew they created a monster lol. I remember in another age he was even stronger in that version, a true end boss.
Bro, an Armored Core game where the whole plot is giant bug extermination ala Aliens? Dude, give it to me baby!
Yo Matt! I had this idea many years ago when I played AC3 for the first time and that horror level from the first AC game. I would totally play a mech game that had just pure missions like these. I guess Lost Planet is closest thing we have to that, the 3rd game in particular feels this way, but only when you're out on foot. Something more like AC though would be great.
Bro, you want mechs vs big bugs? Play Lost Planet: extreme condition
@@alphalightning00frost67 Played it, enjoyed it.
Gearbits is like that, and it’s only $10.
Fighting Bugs the size of Arms fort would be amazing and insane !!!
Ok yea those banging pipes plus location is straight up creepy
VD is a forgotten masterpiece............
That it truly is.
Thank you
Speaking of Halloween horror with mecha, any chance of a review of Blue Gender?
Yo Matt. Ah Blue Gender, now that is a series I've not seen in many years, barely remember it outside of key points, who knows maybe in the future I'll revisit it, there is a lot to pick from.
Thanks to you I discovered Machine Girl. Awesome. Have you heard The Shizit already? Wonderful digital hardcore.
Nice, glad to help. No I have not heard of those guys, so I will check them out, thanks for mentioning them.
I personally like the animation and found the story interesting I just thought the English voice acting is quite bad Really stilted, like they've been poorly directed I've not tried the Japanese VA though, so maybe that one is better?
I watched the subbed version and the voice acting was fine in that, what you described sounds a lot like Netflix dubbed anime, as in it feels very flat, which can hurt the show, obviously not all dubbed stuff is bad, but I try to pick subbed if theirs an option to do so.
I have a lot of bias for J, it's the first mainline game I played and I hold it near and dear to my heart, I love Touya, Calvina, Al-Van and the three girls as characters and their mechs are awesome, putting all bias aside tho, W is a straight up upgrade, if I played W first instead of J it would definitely be my top 1 game of all time, Kazuma and his crew are very well written, my one complaint about this game is the rushed pacing with the the story of some of the shows, but it's not that big of a deal anyway. W is a phenomenal game but J will stay as my favorite
Ah I know exactly what you mean, J wasn't my first SRW game, but it was the first of the handheld games that I beat, I love the roster, it's got some of my fav shows in there, but I know the game does have it's issues. For a GBA game it is amazing what they pulled off, they obviously learned a lot moving to W because yeah as much as I love J...W is just a better produced game. Touya, Calvina and the girls were indeed fun. The more good SRW games the better.
Great video covering everything this game has to offer, its really crazy how much this game has
Thanks. Yeah this game has everything, no other mech game can touch it, in terms on what's on offer, the scope is just massive. Truly sad the devs behind this never got their dues, I know most of them have left FS since this time.
Saint seiya designers, Shingo Araki, Michi Himeno.
Wow I never knew that, but now looking at the designs of this show I can definitely see it.
i was looking for the song of Patlabor and instead found this anime. and a band with the same name, but i dont actually checked it. this anime goes to my list to-watch.
LOL that is just a crazy set of events that lead you here and to this anime. I hope you found the Patlabor song eventually and if you watch this anime I hope you like it.
J is definitely my personal favorite in the lettered series and while W I have had my complaints with the game, at the very least, we get the Astray characters in the roster and I can safely say that the animations were better in the older games / the PS3 and Moon Dwellers games then say the more recent games where the animations are super stiff, they lazily reuse a lot of old animations but make them worse, the rosters are not interesting anymore and the biggest sin as of 30, we FINALLY get some units and characters that should have been in the games, but they are DLC for some reason. I may go back and give W another shot because there is no way I'm gonna be playing the Newer games. Good review!
Hey there. Oh J is still one of my favs, the roster is one of my favs too. I find that the handheld games, really have unique rosters that are more interesting than most of the console games. Astray being in here for example like you said is a big plus. Oh Moon Dwellers animations are insane, they went full big budget on those games. Sadly the franchise has lost its way, the only modern game I enjoyed was V, which I still need to go back and finish. SRW 30 is not a good game for me, I don't plan to finish or play that game again, it is like you say a lazy effort, many of the animations look so bad, and the ridiculous amount of DLC is off putting, it's just an over bloated game that goes on forever with no focus. These modern devs need to look at older SRW games to see what really worked, otherwise the franchise will end and become a mobile game only with DD. Still the plus is we have all these old games to play and have fun with, I still have a long list of old SRW games to play. Thanks for the comment and watching.
@@newtypepunk9967 I disagree, 30 is no overbloated. It is the 30 years anniversary, makes sense that they would go out of their way to celebrate it big time! Literally every other franchise does that! That's also why we had so many DLC, so that more franchises that wer beloved by most could join the celebration! I, for one, loved that both Sakura Wars and Voltes could join the fray, even if as DLC.
@@toumabyakuya The focus should be at the foremost make a good game, SRW 30 becomes uninteresting to me, I'd rather play V, less robots but more of a fun game, that old saying of less is more. If you enjoyed 30 then fair enough.
@@newtypepunk9967 I do not get what isn't enjoyable. I think the problem might simply be that you didn't care at all for the franchises that were part of the Main game.
@@toumabyakuya No, there are good robots in the game. I just found the game boring after a few missions.
My personal favorite game in the Super Robot Wars series, hands down, especially for the storytelling which is damn near Xenogears caliber at times with some of my favorite lineups in a Super Robot Wars game including GaoGaiGar, Tekkaman Blade, Detonator Orgun, Gundam Wing, and Full Metal Panic. In fact, between W and V, it's a hard decission, but I'm only going with W only because I love the main mecha for this game, and not to mention Takayuki Yanase is a damn good mecha artist of an equal caliber to Shoji Kawamori and Hajime Katoki (both of which his work resembles quite a bit).
Yo Matt. Number one SRW game, that is high praise indeed, I can't disagree, it does everything so well. When it comes to favourite roster that is a real tricky one, there are so many SRW games with amazing rosters, however not all of them have the gameplay to match W, which is why it stands so high. I didn't know Takayuki Yanase was the mech designer, the OG mechs in here are incredible. I played some of V but never got to finish it, I did enjoy it, just real life got in the way, so I will go back to it at some point. I wish the current dev teams would look at these older games to see what really worked, because everything after V is kind of meh to me, especially 30, just over bloated with no focus, I'd much rather replay W again, I still have some of the older ones to get through, so if they never make a really good SRW game again, I'm not too fused, it's a shame the series reached the west so late, practically missed out on multiple golden eras of the franchise.
I personally, found Verdict Day to be a bit of a mess. It's an improvement over ACV, to be sure, but still not what I want out of armored core. I found the visuals to be muddy and uninteresting, very much the epitome of the "brown shooter" look that was saturating games at that time period. The gameplay is, frankly, not my cup of tea, with very clunky controls, limited aerial options, and IMO, significantly worse customization. The AC's also all look ugly as sin, and frankly I'm glad we're back to the traditional AC look with AC6. The story of Verdict Day is ok, but it's nothing special. Although, as a BIG fan of AC4 and ACFA, it was nice to see many references to Gen 4, with pieces of Cradles in a few maps, and the remains of the Spirit of Motherwill. And I'll admit, the final boss fight with Dark Glint was very good. The music is alright, although it's very hard to hear any of it over the constant "System: Scan Mode, System: Combat Mode, System: Scan Mode" that's CONSTANTLY blaring in the players ears. Frankly, I'm VERY happy that AC6 ISN'T a continuation of V and VD. V and VD had their time in the sun, but it can stay in the past where it belongs. I would prefer if the next Armored Core game played more like ACFA, or was more like the Gen 3 games. But NOT like Gen 5. No thank you.
I can understand if 5th gen is not your thing, I find most AC fans have their favourite gens and just stick to those games, which is fine. I just like good mech games, whichever gen they fall into.
@@newtypepunk9967 That's understandable. I want more mech games as well. The upcoming Mecha Break looks promising.
I've gotta try Silent Line!
You totally should try it, one of the best in the series for sure.
H A W K E N M E N T I O N E D
You can reset your walljump or wallclimb by kicking the wall. Basically AC 5th gen kick, except you don't bounce of the wall in this case. Good to know there are more AC fans that also loved Titanfall.
Oh wow I didn't know that, I will have to give it a try next time I play this. That's kind of crazy that those two mechanics work their way into two different games, both of high quality to boot. Oh yeah I love both those series, it's pity theirs not more TF games, there should be at least 2 more games by now, but apex legends and EA are massive road blocks.
@@newtypepunk9967 Even in PvE the game has tons of replayability. Another tip btw: you can crouch as you land from a walljump to slide and then jump to keep your momentum going. Look up clips in YT. You can pull off some really cool moves even at the entry level skill.
More like what if a char clone was the main character The Anine
LOL that's interesting way of putting it, despite all the clones of char in Gundam, they have never been the main character, I guess full frontal is the closest to that.
I'm so happy people play more "obscure" fromsoft games. Liked and subbed
Yeah it's a shame this game never came out in the west, I think many Gundam fans would have bought it, because it's a really good game. Thanks for the kind words.
Also if you love aphex twin or autechre, last Raven soundtrack is closest to it and that's badass. Though I love all AC game soundtracks as all of them dope, I feel aclr deserves special mention for having such that not many people will understand but those who dig will appreciate
It's a unique OST for sure, I don't mind it, AC series has very good sound tracks overall, so fans have their favourites.
And branching storyline done very well. Some characters open up differently on routes
Yes it adds loads of replay value with the branching paths, you can spend hours playing the game.
Love last Raven. Atmosphere of "world dies soon" is enormous and you take direct part in that
Yeah they nailed it with the atmosphere, everything is on edge, it really does feel like the end of a saga, which I guess it is the end of old gen, so it was a good send off.
