MM504 Lecture 32: Environmental Assisted cracking and hydrogen embrittlement
Просмотров 100Год назад
Environmental assisted cracking (EAC) is a phenomenon where a material experiences cracking due to the combined effects of a corrosive environment and mechanical loading. One type of EAC is hydrogen embrittlement (HE), where the presence of hydrogen in a metal can cause it to become brittle and prone to cracking. Hydrogen embrittlement can occur during manufacturing, surface treatment, or servi...
MM504 Lecture 33b: Chaos and order, Self-symmetry, Mandelbrot fractals
Просмотров 23Год назад
There is a mistake in the first graph. It should have been between r vs saturated value of population Xn. Chaos theory is the study of complex and unpredictable systems that are highly sensitive to initial conditions. Chaos theory has applications in various fields, including physics, mathematics, economics, and biology. Mandelbrot fractals are a type of complex, self-similar geometric pattern ...
MM504 Lecture 31: Creep-Fatigue crack
Просмотров 83Год назад
Creep-fatigue crack behavior refers to the phenomenon where a material under cyclic loading and elevated temperature experiences damage and cracking. Creep is a time-dependent deformation of a material under a constant load, and fatigue is the weakening of a material due to cyclic loading. The combination of creep and fatigue can lead to the formation and growth of cracks, which can significant...

MM504 Lecture 29: Paris Law and Young's double slit experiment
Просмотров 113Год назад
The double slit experiment, first conducted by Thomas Young in the early 19th century, has continued to yield fascinating results in modern times. Recent experiments have shown that the behavior of particles at the quantum level is inherently probabilistic, with individual particles exhibiting wave-like properties that interfere with each other as they pass through the double slits. This interf...
MM504 Lecture 24: Creep and Stress Rupture test, LMP and MG parameters
Просмотров 388Год назад
Creep and stress rupture tests are methods used to determine the long-term behavior of materials under constant or varying loads at high temperatures. Creep tests measure the deformation of a material over time under a constant load, while stress rupture tests determine the time it takes for a material to fail under a constant load. The Larson-Miller parameter and the MG parameter are two appro...
MM504 Lecture 28: Cyclic softening and hardening
Просмотров 551Год назад
Cyclic hardening and softening refer to the changes in material properties, specifically its hardness or strength, after undergoing repeated cycles of loading and unloading. Cyclic hardening occurs when the material becomes stronger and harder with each cycle, while cyclic softening is the opposite, where the material becomes weaker and softer with each cycle. These phenomena are commonly obser...

Hello Sir, I hope you are doing well. Sir, In the S-N curve, you told that the vertical axis is related to mean stress, but i think it is related to stress level which is the ratio of maximum flexural fatigue strength and static flexural strength of the sample.

    1) The value of a shape function of a node is 1 for that particular node and 0 for other nodes. 2) The strain matrix for the quad element can be written as a B matrix multiply by a displacement matrix. 3 ) The force matrix which is a column matrix equals the stiffness matrix multiply by the displacement matrix. 4) In FEM the elastic modulus of the quad element can be written as a matrix which is denoted by D. 5) We can write the Generalised Degree of Freedom as the multiplication of shape function and degrees of freedom at every node.

    1) We derived the shape function for bilinear quadratic elements 2) The shape function at each node has a value of 1 for that particular node number where they are defined and is 0 for other node numbers. 3) We found the generalised degree of freedom, and it can be written as a matrix multiplication of shape function and degree of freedom for each node 4) We formulated the B matrix, the derivative of shape function wrt local coordinates. 5) we also found the strain matrix, which is matrix multiplication of B x(displacement matrix) 6) we learnt D matrix for bilinear quadratic elements and also about how Jacobian matrix relates the local coordinates and the global coordinates

    1. Quadratic Bilinear Element Description. 2. Shape Function; Writing shape function for every node. 3. The value of shape function N1 is zero for every node except the node for which this shape function is written, i.e. i=1. Similarly we can write for N2, N3 and N4. 4.Generalised Degree of Freedom can be written as the multiplication of shape function & the and degrees of freedom at every node.

    1) Values of local coordinates wont change even if the shape or global coordinates are changed 2) Displacement at local nodes can be calculated which can be related to the overall displacement and using isoparametric calculation we can obtain the generalized degrees of freedom 3) Similarly we can do the strain calculation also we can obtain K
