A Slow, Magical Evening in Our Garden | Zone 7/8 Gardening in North Carolina
#garden #gardening #slowliving
I didn't mean to film last night, but as we were out enjoying a rare cool evening catching fireflies, there was something so magical about the way that the garden looked that I just wanted to try to capture a piece of the beauty.
It's been so hot and dry here in Western North Carolina lately that I'm happy that our garden has been doing as well as it has. I try not to water the garden until absolutely necessary, though my pots do require a bit of maintenace.

    Lordy! What cute little helpers you have! 😊 And you got some great things in your "surprise box!" How were the partake cookies? I think I saw Caleb munching on them/lol! Also, how much was this box? I currently make a lot of meals from scratch, but I am FAST running out of ideas, and this seems like a good option. Thank you!!! God bless

      He loved the cookies! We did enjoy it - and the meals that we tried were all pretty delicious. I like that it encouraged me to step outside some of my standards. I want to say that the boxes were around $100-110 or so. I can't fully remember, but I know there were lots of discount codes available that made it seem like a good deal.

      We love a good discount! Gonna see about signing up maybe next month because those items looked so good and like you I need help thinking outside the box! I stick to my old "tried and true's" so I don't waste money on food I "don't think I'll like!" LOL

    What a great way to support a charity especially if it’s not in your family’s budget to come up with the money yourself. The products speak for themselves, and recently I learned there are some real quality concerns with those inexpensive black cooking utensils we get at Walmart, Dollar Tree, Dollar General etc. I need to do more research into the problem, I understand it’s because they are petroleum based and then we have them in constant heat, allowing the toxins to leach into our food. Definitely research on your own and see if that’s something that might negatively impact you and your family.

    Hi, I'm getting standard laying chickens mostly because fertilizer and compost products are getting very expensive. I also have honeybees and the chickens are another means of controlling insect populations. There are many reasons to have chickens beyond the eggs.. I'm looking at meat chickens and turkeys because of the grocery prices. I buy some feed a few months in advance because when the demand increases in the spring its often hard to find. The lock-down made some real supply chain issues. Oil prices (diesel) makes everything cost more for productions of grains as ingredients.. Its really great to see your children learning about basic farm practices, unlike what is taught in government funded schools.

    • @OrchardCreekHomestead
      @OrchardCreekHomestead 3 месяца назад

      We learned the hard way to stock up the first time we did meat chickens. We went to pick-up a bag of food and the only thing left in the store was 1-2 bags of the most expensive stuff. It floored me that in a week, the store went from being stocked up to bare shelves.

    Can you share where you got the bags please? The ones that shrink around the bird in the water. Did you end up putting a small slit in the bag in the middle of the breast to allow the bag to shrink?

    • @OrchardCreekHomestead
      @OrchardCreekHomestead Год назад

      Absolutely! These are the ones we used: amzn.to/3OZZZKM. The bags come with this plastic tubing you put in the cavity of the bird to help get some of the air, but instead of putting it in the cavity, I put the tube in-between the two breasts as I think it helped the bag to shrink a bit more.

    Hi, maybe you can help me out as I cannot find anyone else talking about this. This spring I would like to either buy or hatch new chicks, but I would also like to add a gosling to grow with them for predator protection. I have a few questions. 1. Do the goslings and chicks need to be the same age or hatch near the same time, can I get chicks even if my goslings have not hatched yet? 2. Do I need more then one gosling, if so does it have to be a male and a female, male and male or female, female? 3. If goslings have different temperature requirements then chicks how can I keep them in the same brooder under the same light? Or do I have to separate them? 4. If they are living together, do goslings eat the same feed as chicks, I know they needed something extra added into it, but how do I add that extra supplement to there food without the chicks eating it as well? 5. Do gosling also need meds or electrolyt formula in the beginning as well? 6. Do I need to provide swimming water for the goslings like you would for ducks? 7. I already have a flock of chickens that I hatched and grew the previous year, when and how am I able to introduce my new chicks and goslings to my older hens? If you have gotten this far and are still considering answering my questions then I would just like to say Thankyou! Thankyou! Thankyou!

    • @OrchardCreekHomestead
      @OrchardCreekHomestead 2 года назад

      I hope this helps! 1) So, as least in our experience, we got our goslings and chicks at the same time - same age. After about two weeks, the goslings were much bigger than the chicks so we moved them to their own container. 2) We got two because we like the idea of having two, but we aren't sure of the gender. We are hoping they are male/female or female/female (if they are male/male, we may rehome one). I've heard with two, you can have issues with them bonding with one another and not the chicks, but we haven't seen any problems. 3) When we had them in the same brooder, we just used a heat lamp - if they got too hot, they just moved away. 4) When they were together, we added nutrional yeast for a bit but honestly, we didn't try to keep the chicks out! We weren't giving them much. 5) I definitely say yes! Not necessarily, but really helps! 6) They need something deep enough to fully immerse their beaks. We're going to get a kiddie pool for ours, but not necessarily, I think. 7) I would wait until about 2-3 months, depending on the size of your chicks/goslings, so that they don't - hopefully - get picked on too much!

    I can’t wait to see what your asparagus does!! I figured that asparagus, artichoke, and Brussels sprouts would be crops that we would try later-maybe next year. This year we have planted cucumbers, spinach, bok choy, Bibb lettuce, arugula, kale, Swiss chard, rhubarb, all kinds of peppers and tomatoes, dill, sage, basil, terragon, thyme, oregano, peas & beans, watermelons, carrots, and potatoes. Of course lots of flowers too, to bring in all of the bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds!! 💞 I still need to plant my zucchini, squash, radish, chamomile, luffa, and I’m sure some others that I’ve bought. I don’t expect to be 100% successful because I KNOW I bit off more than I can chew but I’m optimistic that I will grow the foods that our family will eat 🥰 Did I mention we are starting our own compost as well?!? 🤣👏🏼😬

      @OrchardCreekHomestead 2 года назад

      I love it! We tried Brussels Sprouts a few years ago - we got confused on which plant it was and thought it was just collards. So we just ate the leaves. Eventually, after stripping the plant near about bare, we spotted the little sprouts. I'm so excited about your garden and all of your plans! You are rocking it!!

    I've seen people really abuse their drop coordinator by never showing up and expecting the coordinator to take everything to their own house for later pick-up. I couldn't start ordering through Azure until my schedule became completely flexible. They've been on-time, a-day-late and a-day-early to my stop. I agree about the biggest problem -- no way to know if you'll get an item if they are low on it. I wanted a 50gallon empty container. Even when the truckers have plenty of room, I've never been able to get one. Being able to buy my wheat berries is the #1 reason I buy through Azure. They've really suffered through the growing pains and I commend their efforts through the last 2 years.

    • @OrchardCreekHomestead
      @OrchardCreekHomestead 2 года назад

      Absolutely agree - I love how honest Azure has been throughout everything about the struggles they've had growing to the size that they've become. That's a good point about people expecting the drop coordinator to take their stuff - I think people tend to forget that the coordinators are volunteers, not employees.

    Boy that baby is growing ❤️ The last haul of yours I watched you were pregnant 😊 I picked up my Azure order this afternoon and had a great new Pro happen while there…the driver announced he had a box that was put on his truck by mistake and if anyone wanted to purchase anything out of it then they would get 15% off so I got 8 items including a small stainless serving ladle I didn’t even know Azure sold, 3 packs of seeds I didn’t have, a lb of arrowroot powder and a small bottle of their Suds dishwashing liquid to give a try. I enjoyed your haul as usual ❤️. Thank you for sharing
