Is this the Freddy Carter who was mates with John Salisbury? I live in Somerset now and it's years since l went back to visit family and have pie & mash, are there any pie and mash shops left?
My grandmother was first female mayor of Islington in 1938.She was also Labour Councillor and a Justice of the Peace. Mum was her Mayoress. They were a poor family. Father was also born in Islington in 1916.
Truely amazing thank you ❤❤❤ for uploading this. I have been a resident of Islington for over 50 years & I loved everything that you put on. Wow 🎉🎉🎉 Really enjoyed this
Born and bred Pembroke Street, Gifford School, Copenhagen School. Now in California. Would love a pie and mash at Manzes Chape Street. Just watched Royal funeral very homesick. Thank you for the memoriesl
It’s as grim as ever traffic engulfed, dirty and a disgusting place to be in parts of LBI, still got beggars on the streets, almost as bad as Romford was in the 1960’s.
There was a Manses Liquor n mash shop in exmouth market CLERKENWELL. I used to walk to school to save my bus fair n have a bowl of liquor n mash for my dinner. Didn’t like school meals, rather have my liquor n mash.
Just canonbury square Islington and recognised the top of our road where we moved to from clerkenwell. Alwyne villas lead down towards canonbury road which then lead down to Essex road. And into new north road to old street.
Angel market mum used to take me shopping back in the 60s It used to be a wonderful place I don't think it is now to many Muslims and Blacks the Angel had something spacial in thous days ah yes it was British the traders were British the noises and sounds were British the admosfear was English.
Its the Muslims& Blacks that made England standing up hard working people who worked any jobs long hours while you slept in your nice warm bed only comimg out 2 get your benefit stop been racist and labeling people no one is above the other
I know. Life was better with no NHS and living in slums with inadequate heating and outside toilets and no car or tv and then dying at fifty something from tb or some other horrible disease. Yep, life was definitely better. Lets not forget poverty was rife, There was no child welfare state or birth control options as we have today. Many children born were from poor families and expected to work because their families needed the money Many had a rough and hard life, often ending up in the workhouse or early death from disease. Stench were common. Apart from the smell from horses the sewerage system and sewage treatment methods were not as developed. The poor had few luxuries. ate food they could afford to buy, worked long hours, lived in damp, filthy conditions. Few houses had running water beyond one cold tap in the kitchen.
Any on my bit of the Manor: Hornsey Islington, or Holloway Road area? Angel looked like the wealthy part of our borough even in the Edwardian Period, and doing very well, thank you. This was the belle epoch, just before the First World War, when plenty of Colonial cash was around, and many of the working classes were now moving into managerial jobs, and becoming shop assistants for the new stores growing up around the Angel- as seen in these excellent pictures above.
Help! Does anyone know where abouts Crown Mansions was on Liverpool Road, were they flats and whats there now. Are there any old images? My mother lived there in the late 40's early 50's and Ive never been able to see any images at all of the place.
I was at the wedding with my wife and baby ( at the end of the video). I was talking to Michelle, Bill and Denise's daughter and mentioned that I had cine film of the wedding and I will post it on you tube for her. After 42 years eh!!
