UTSA Graduate voice pedagogy class, October 27, 2023
This video is of a graduate voice pedagogy class held on October 27, 2023 at the UTSA School of Music, John Nix, instructor. We do an ear training exercise on perceiving various aspects of vibrato, using synthesized tokens generated in Madde. Students learned to discriminate changes in vibrato rate, vibrato extent, both qualities, both qualities when there is a change in pitch or a change in vowel or a change in both.

John Nix lesson with young tenor 10-26-23
Просмотров 273Год назад
This video is of a 30 minute lesson with an undergraduate tenor. We vocalize and then work on the 'recitative' at the beginning of Sam's aria, "Lonely House," from Weill's Street Scene. We conclude the lesson with some work on the recitative which precedes "If with all your hearts," the first tenor aria in Mendelssohn's Elijah.
John Nix Voice Pedagogy Lecture on Vocal Tract Resonances
Просмотров 174Год назад
This lecture took place on October 24, 2023 at the University of Texas at San Antonio. In the class, we discuss the concept of resonance, that resonators have certain frequencies to which they best respond, that the vocal tract can be shaped at will, that vocal tract shapes have resonance frequencies, and thus vowels, which are vocal tract shapes, have resonance frequencies. This is the key to ...
Lyric soprano lesson 10-24-23 with John Nix
Просмотров 183Год назад
This is a 31 minute lesson with a graduate lyric soprano who is 24 years old. I have worked with her for one year, much more frequently in the last two months since she began her MM in performance and pedagogy, so we have a nice rapport in place. We vocalize and then work on Amy Beach's song, "The year's at the spring."

This video, which is 59:20 in length, shows a full lesson with a 24 year-old soubrette soprano, Maggie. We have worked together for three years. We do a thorough vocalizing session based around skills needed for the repertoire for the day, "Prendi, per me, sei libero," from Donizetti's opera L'elisir d'amore. This video shows me teaching my student Christian Stevens, who is a 23 year old baritone majoring in music composition at the University of Texas at San Antonio. We vocalize for several minutes, work on several spots in Gerald Finzi's song, "To a poet a thousand years hence," return to vocalizing, then return to working on the song. The lesson lasts approximately 34 minutes. This lesson was rec...

I am not an expert, but I do have a question.... When you did the vocal fry, it wasn't really irregular -- I got a sense of a pulse train pretty steady arround maybe 50 Hz. So it could just be that the first two peaks are multiples of that frequency rather than the filter formants? In order to rule that our you might make the vocal fry more irregular, or give it some vibrato?
It's even possible that you were subconsciously aligning the fry frequency with the formants peak, which I understand is part of singing technique?
Interesting comment. I will look at that again. Vibrato in vocal fry isn't really possible, as that would require action of the cricothyroid muscle,, which needs to be basically inactive for vocal fry to occur.
@@praveenb9048 Certainly I was continuing to think of and shape for the sung vowel.
Thank you for sharing this great class!! I loved it!.....!💓🎶🎶🎶🎶
So the fR1 and fR2 are the labels for the first and second formant, if I got it right?
Yes
Is this version of the software available anywhere?
There is a much newer version available at www.sygyt.com/en/
@@johnnix3990 Thank you💗 I have installed the latest one, but wanted to get the one you are using as it is the same version that I see Robert Lunte using when format tuning, so I hoped to follow along with him when practicing singing.

Sorry, but this is reaaly necessary to mention: how can a guy, who seems to have pretty few knowledge about singing technique, teach singing? Breath, support, lyrinx position, body control, all this seems to have no place in this teaching. Poor students, because how should they know, right?
Hi, I would be happy to clarify any questions you have regarding my teaching or my knowledge about voice pedagogy. I am co-chair of the National Association of Teachers of Singing’s voice science committee, on the editorial board of the Journal of Singing, Professor of Voice and Voice Pedagogy at UT San Antonio, and a member of the American Academy of Teachers of Singing.
@@johnnix3990 yep don't take another singer's inflated ego to heart! Actually I think there are a bunch of trolls here who are not singers at all! I would continue to work with him on the connection of the vowels, not to chop it up, legato. And I would work on strengthening his head voice. But he has a great instrument and talent. Keep up the good work with him. Great singers do not become great singers overnight.
why is the pattern of your OO vowel so different with that blank area in the spectrogram?
Hi, thanks for your note. Some of it was I was about to stop singing, and wasn't singing as loud, so some of the higher harmonics were not as strong (when we sing louder, the vocal folds tend to close more firmly each cycle, and firm closure and a rapid shut off of the flow tends to generate more energy in high frequencies). Second, the /u/ vowel has low first and second resonances (around 300 Hz and 1000 Hz). So above that things won't be as strong simply because there is a gap between that second resonance at around 1000 Hz and the third one up around 3000 Hz.
Very interesting overview of how you use these tools - many thanks!
Awesome voice !
Beautiful lesson ❤
Thank you! She is a very talented and intelligent singer.

HOW CAN I PUT HARMONY AND FORMANT LINES ON A SPECTOGRAM? I WANT TO USE IT FOR DEFINING THE VOCAL REGISTER IM USING WHILE SINIGING

@@johnnix3990 ARE THOSE DISPLAYS AVAILABLE ON TRIAL VERSION?I CANNOT FIND FORMANT
How harmonics are produced by the vocal folds at the same time
so what makes different vowels? instead of fundamental frequency, it is actually different power of different harmonics that make the differences?
Yes, as the shape of the vocal tract changes, different frequencies receive more or less boosting by the resonances of the vocal tract. So the differences we hear between 'see' and 'sue' are due to changes in which harmonics are stronger. In the case of 'see,' harmonics with frequencies around 300 Hz and 2000 Hz are strongest, while in the case of 'sue,' frequencies around 300 Hz and 1000 Hz are strong.
This is such a well done tutorial. Super interesting -- thank you for sharing!
I can't wait until I get to my Vibrato Module so that I can use these ideas, thank you John!
wait this isnt The Sopranos
This was one of the most concise and helpful presentations on SOVT I've seen. I tend to bring the science of voice pedagogy into my studio with my students, and you've added greatly to my ability to describe the science in better detail in a more understandable way. Thank you!
The levels on your voice and the software are wildly different... your voice is super soft and the software is super loud :\ Maybe run the audio through a compressor or limiter?
Excellent presentation of this concept! MOVT has revolutionized my singing.
Thank you for posting this lesson dear John. I very much enjoyed watching this video. You are a wonderful teacher. Can’t wait to watch a new lesson with your student!
Thank you! She is now in her second year of coursework at the University of Maryland - she is getting a MS in speech pathology. She wants to be a singing voice specialist and work with rehabilitating injured singers.
John Nix Wow, that is so amazing! These specialists are seldom and thus precious. Best wishes to her!
I like the way you teach dear John. Can you post an updated lesson with Rachel? Would love to hear her progress!

I am *IN LOVE* with the young lady with the Sperry's! I uess she doesn't always wear glasses
The girl with the sperrys on acts as those speerys were hurting her feet in these videos like her feet were killing her bc she kept slipping them both off her n there thru the video

Are they still your students? I'm infatuated by the young lady in white with the Sperry's and glasses
She's happily married and has two kids. But thanks for asking.
Yes, I've discovered that ._.
Makes you wonder if her husband ever gets to enjoy her feet
the girl that's happly married that's in this video who constantly plays with her sperrys should just take them off until the end of class so she's more comfortable & focused rather then slipping in & out of her sperrys like you see in the videos.
