Looks like a Lely mower, i guess its completely metric? Have a disc mower torn apart that's looks awfully similar.
Dustin. Thanks for the videos. I have a new to me original 5209 that works well. A NI 5209 mechanic went through it last year and all is good. Your video helped me to tackle the annual maintenance. As you suggest, job one was to purchase the maintenance manual. Cheers.
Your welcome, glad you liked it!
Whats the dimensioms on your calving shed
The main shed is 16 feet wide and 32 feet long. There’s two pens. There 12x12 and my head shoot sits in the middle of them if there’s any trouble.
Hi, I'd like to start off by saying. Thank you for taking the time to make these videos. Because it has helped me in diagnosing and doing repairs on my own 5209 cutter bar. I am in the process of repairing a broken shaft segment. And I'm wondering if you think that the shafts are hardened or if I could use a piece of shaft from the welding shop. Thanks
I’m not sure if the factory shafts are hardened or not, I just went to my local welding shop and they made me one out of regular hex shaft. I’ve been running the same shaft since I made that video with no troubles yet. If it starts to feel like there’s getting play I’ll just have another made and slide it in, it really didn’t cost that much I was surprised. Glad the videos helped!
Thanks!
How tight does the nut on top of the gearbox have to be?
Excellent video. Longer is better for video so you can detail things. I have a turtle that has way to much play and am afraid of grenading it. Hopefully just bearings are tired.

Whats the dimensioms on your calving shed?
I think like 16x33 roughly. It two 12’ pens with the head gate i between them and a little area to put a few bales along side
Have you checked out my small vineyard I am busy developing?
I bet it takes a lot of hard work to care for the cattle.
It’s not that bad, we only have about twenty cows
@@dustinadams9136 A lot for me.
Dang.. you beat us to the finish line.. still 3 to go 🙄 Cows and calves are looking good!
Hey thanks Ed. It’s a nice feeling to have them all in now, we’re not keeping the one cow around anymore so she will be getting fattened and turned to hamburgers. I wasn’t expecting them to drop yet but we had a weather system come through and helped it out.
Nice to see all the cows and calves. It's a lot greener there than what we have.
Stuffs coming but I was hoping to have them on grass by now, there really complaining about the feed lol.
Lucky! Looks nice down there, we got 3" of rain Sunday n Monday, another 1.5 thus weekend I guess, sure us nice to see green! That triticale looks super nice!
I’m hoping to be able to get a cutting off of it and wet wrap it but if I graze it I don’t know if I’ll have time. Wanted to have th sorghum planted around the first of June. With all your rain the grass should be going into high gear any day now I bet!
Excellent
Well done! Awesome job. That's how to make a DIY video. Sooner or later I've got to do this with our 5209.
Thank you!
Good video. Keep on making them.😊
Thank you!
I used to cut the bull calves in the fall, tried banding at birth last year and worked good. Saves stress on them around weaning time.
I agree, but have heard many debates on it from old timers.
Even if the lime doesn't actually help with disease prevention you know its not a waste. The fields can always use a little extra calcium!
Very true. It cuts down on the smell in the barns as well
Just realized i didn't finish the video this morning when the kids started pounding on the bathroom door lol looks like the calves are pretty comfy back in there, theres that belted again, when you dont put her on camera, she yells at you lol they got the vigor! nice big ol boy right there! quiet cow too is even better!
Don’t them kids your taken care of business in there lol. Yea that dam belted one 🤦🏼♂️
Do what you gotta do 👍 Keep them healthy.
Ha that is slick for the calves! I might have to try that. The good moms make it easy for a guy!
Now this is what I call an authentic farm. It reminds me of my old uncle’s farm in South Africa when I was a youngster. I turn 76 years old this coming Friday so it was a long time ago!
Thanks, my grandpa took alot of pride in this place and when ever I do something I always think of him or ask myself what he would think… thanks for watching and commenting!
Does it work to put the barn lime on a dirt floor once it's scraped, or dies it just get absorbed into the dirt and not do anything?
That’s a question for someone a lot smarter than me lol. But my uneducated guess is it couldn’t hurt🤷🏼♂️
Lime still makes a barrier. In bad years for navel infection, we've put lime down over dirty straw and spread fresh over it.. it helps.
@@GosselinFarmsEdGosselin Good to know, Thanks Ed!
The new LED outdoor lights are nice and Brite with low power usage. You are right, plenty of lighting is a must! Lights and cameras sure are a game changer! Now I just need some cattle panels to keep my calves home so they don't become coyote food
Yup same here, they just don’t have the same respect for a hot wire the moms do lol. Goes maybe that’s why there was so much woven wire put up years ago, calves sheep or maybe pigs couldn’t make through that.
Nice calf. I like your hoop building set-up. Something like that would work nicely for me.
That hoop barn has been one of the best things we have done, just wish we would have made it bigger. This one is 36x64, with no end walls witch I think has saved it survive some bad windstorms. It does get some snow and rain that blow in but not to bad
Good morning Dustin ☕☕☕ Dang ☃️💩!! Good lighting is a must! Cameras are nice too! Momma says she's been up all night.. doesn't want to momma with you there. Pens look like they're working well 👍 calves are looking good!!
Hey thanks Ed the cameras have been one of the best things I’ve bought yet, saves me making the drive to check them a few times a night anyway and don’t interrupt them when calving. But it’s like watching a pot on the stove to see when it’s boiling. Nothing happens till you look away lol. Thanks for checking in!
You sure have a nice place to calve Dustin. I hate snow and no sleep too lol. Take care my friend.
It’s a work in progress. Now just need more cows lol. Thanks Tom I appreciate the compliment! Seems weird that this is the time of year I look forward to the most even though it’s the most stressful.
, you and Brad are going to germinate plants if you get any more lights A calf can fall out of mom and get up faster than me after my alarm is going off.
He's a beaut!
Hey man, calves are looking good, sure is a nice belted cow ya got there lol I have one of those tapes too but i dont really use them as either the cow is breathing down my neck or the calf kicks my calving box and spreads the contents all over in the straw that i have to go on a scavenger hunt to find again. The head gate idea is a great idea and i'm sure youll figure out something, i kind if have a rough idea but i don't know how to explain it, might hafta get on the horn with ya sometime. Have a good one man, grab a truck and come get some of our snow, looks like you guys are running short!
Ha your Funny no thanks on the snow!!! I can’t believe how you guys keep getting hammered!
@@dustinadams9136 Its getting rediculous, im ready to start complaining about mosquitos lol i'll give you a call back this evening.
Hey Dustin Nice looking calves. Cows are in great shape. Take care and stay safe during calving season my friend.
Thanks Tom I really appreciate that! Always enjoy joy hearing what you have to say . I hope everything is going good for you and your family!
From a carpenters perspective it doesn't look to bad. You can always have Dustin thoughts while maintaining.
Dustin thoughts 🤔I’d never get any work done lol.
Those tapes are pretty close. We used to have one that you put around the belly, good enough to give you a good idea of what they weigh as bigger calves.. Cows calves and the barn work is looking good 👍😁
Thanks Ed!
Is there some Charlotte in the calf you pulled? On camera it has that grey color. Calves are nice and shiney!
Yes, on the mother’s side there’s charlotte blood and it father is pure blood simmental
@@dustinadams9136 we had a little charlet calf. It was the cutest little thing but the most mischievous. It would be in the feed bunk in the bell rang anywhere that you put up a gate to not have cattle it would always be on the opposite side. But it would look at you like it did nothing wrong
Did you make those hinges for the gates that are inside the barn? I have made a few headgates from 2 inch steel tubing
Hey Ray. Yes I made the pin pockets for one end. 2” is kinda what I had in my head, I do better making things out of steel than I do out of wood.
Good Monday morning Dustin. Great update on what’s happening at your place and the cows are looking good. Take care and have a blessed week my friend.
Thanks Tony good to hear from you!
Be cool to use grandpa's area! Is it the camera angle or is the belted cow bigger?!
The belted one is half angus half belted Galloway, she’s not a real big frame cow but will usually wean a calf 2/3 her size. She’s bread to a full blooded simm bull, Tuesday afternoon she had a nice sized bull calf. The barn is coming along, not as fast as I wanted but getting there.
Looks like a fun building project
Good to see a video from you. 👍🙂
Wasn’t much but thanks for watching it anyway!
You can build a nice spot to sleep in the barn to.
Nice to see ya still kickin around. 👍🍻
Still taking air yup. Good to hear from ya Rick 🍻
What’s the trick to get the cutter bar separated from the gearbox? I have everything loose and can move the gear at about 1/4” out of the gearbox, but can’t fully separate. Help?!?!?
Are you meaning on the main drive gear box that the pto runs into?
@@dustinadams9136 I’m trying to pull the entire cutter bar out. It will pull slightly from the gearbox, but I can’t get it to fully release.
@@robertstuart1365 when you slide it try to figure out if the hex shaft is coming out with it or if it’s stuck in the gearbox. My shaft had gotten spon in the coupler and I had to free it to be able to move it. Or pull the end cap off the outer end and remove the hex shaft all together then the only thing connecting the cutter bar and box should be the bolts. I’ll pull the book out study it alittle more.
@@dustinadams9136 I got it! Thanks for your help!
@@robertstuart1365 no problem, what ended up being the problem?
lol! Away from the road so you're not afraid to try new things... LOVE it! Those neighbors will sure get ya, won't they??? You've got a great blend going!
Hey thanks for stopping by. We haven’t had any rain since I planted that stuff so it didn’t take off very well and we have had multiple nights down in the teens for temps already. Figuring growing anything is over for this year.
@@dustinadams9136 hey, same here! Very little rain here if any! Things are indeed crunchy! And of course we've already had at least 2 freezes and a few frosty punkin' mornings! Next week we'll be back in the 80's!! lol
I was still in the fire service that day, we stay glued to the tv for days watching the carnage. Take care and have a blessed rest of the week Dustin.
Thank you my friend I hope yours has been blessed as well!
Greetings, I have come over from Tony Walsh. I like what you do so subscribed to your channel. God bless you.
Great update and a fourth cutting is pretty great. Take care and have a blessed rest of the week my friend.
Looks really good man. Cows are gona be fat n happy this winter.
I sure hope so! Just need to lay in some more bedding and then I’ll be set I think.
Looks like you’re going in the winter sitting pretty good
Not bad, have started to supplement the cows with some hay because they pasture is all but done . I need to do an inventory count yet to be sure.
Nice crop you ended up with! Should make for some happy cows this winter 👍
Thanks, I sure hope so. It’s a really nice feeling to know there’s going to be plenty of feed! Thanks for watching and commenting!
It sure is nice when things grow good. I had my Sorghum out by the road. I only had 2 people stop to ask what it was. I really like the no till idea. I could have put my rye straight into the Sorghum stubble and been done.
Renting a drill to plant with is easier then tilling it all up and then planting, takes alot less time and I think it’s cheaper for me anyway since I don’t have much for tillage equipment. But I am starting to see more weed pressure coming in with the rotation I’ve been doing. Thanks for watching and commenting!
@@dustinadams9136 I don't know anyone around here to rent a no till drill from. I think I'm going to go to a rotation something like 3 years hay (clover, grass) till up for winter rye. Follow rye with sorghum then fall plant back to hay. Maybe 🤷♂️.
@@farawayfarm2520 that should work I would think your still not doing a lot of tillage so that will help. My grandpa was a big believer in the plow for everything so this farm needs some TLC big time.
