Yiddish Glory Torah and Swastika
"Torah and Swastika"
The words of this song, which described Nazi actrocities committed in the city of Kalisz, Poland in 1939, were first documented by poet Hirsh Kleyner as he was collecting Yiddish songs from Jewish refugees in Chuvashia in 1942 (a region in Russia 2,200 KMs east of Kalisz). One of those refugees was a woman named Menukhe Dunant, who was 27 years old at the time.
No melody of this survived, so Psoy Korolenko composed new music to accompany this text describing atrocities committed in Kalisz.
The song focused on two things: atrocities and memory. The words, "Gedenken bizn toyt" (I'll remember until I die) are repeated in almost every line. There is a call to record what hap...
