Why I Live In A Small Town, part 23 It all started in college, when at midnight on Halloween one of the student organizations threw a hundred-pound pumpkin off the top of the tallest building on campus -- more than 300 feet tall. When the pumpkin hit the ground, it made a noise like a bomb going off, and it made quite an impression on me. Fast forward about thirty years to 2015, and the organization I run, The Exchange, has joined with other non-profits in the town where we live, Bloomsburg, Pa., to put on a Halloween-themed street festival called "BOO!burg". (Yes, I will take credit for the dad-joke-worthy name.) It occurs to me that we need to do a pumpkin drop. But of course the buildings adjoining the location on 7th Street do not go any higher than two stories. So I call the fire chief, Bob Rupp, and explain that I would like to borrow the ladder truck. Huh, he says on the phone. But he meets me at the site and agrees to come out with the truck and a few volunteers on the Friday evening of the event. And he lets me go out on the bucket at the end of the ladder and toss the pumpkins; after the crowd counts down, I aim for one of the manhole covers. Much to my joy, Bob has such a good time that he says he will come out and do it every year. So for five years the crowd at BOO!burg -- a crowd I estimate at 3,000 people annually -- gets to watch the pumpkins drop. We use pretty small pumpkins (what the generous farms in the area donate to us) and we only go up 35 feet or so, but it has become a tradition -- so much so that even after Bob's retirement, the new chief keeps it going. And I retire from dropping pumpkins to let the volunteer firemen have the fun. And now in 2020, COVID has changed the way we do almost everything; BOO!burg has to go virtual. That can only mean one thing: We have to do the drop on video so we can share it on the Web during the virtual event. I call the fire chief, Scott W. McBride, and we arrange to meet whenever convenient for him. I call Denise Bosworth at Rohrbach's Farm Market (rohrbachsfarm.net), and on a Thursday afternoon I drive out to the farm and Denise helps me load up about thirty pumpkins into our van -- fresh out of the field. I go home and tell my family about the pumpkins' impending date with destiny, and they say, in chorus, "We want to help!" So on a Friday afternoon I locked up The Exchange a little early, leaving a note on the door -- "BOO!burg video shoot; reopen Monday" -- and the four of us drove in the van over to the fire hall, the pumpkins rolling around on the floor around Maia's and Jem's feet. We'd no sooner arrived than the ladder truck appeared out of the bay; Scott drove it to the far end of the parking lot and got it set up, with the outriggers down. He climbed up into the bucket and we handed him all of the pumpkins. Then Scott's wife, Nancy, climbed in, and up they went. I'd set up one camera to record video, and I took stills with the other. Although we had to look 75 feet in the air to see them, and although we had the ladder truck's engine running close to us, we could hear the sounds of joy coming from the bucket as Scott and Nancy unloaded the first third of the pumpkins. Then Maia and Sara had their turn, and then Jem and I got ours; Scott asked if we would like to try from as high as possible, so he took us up to about 85 feet. Neither Jem nor I love heights especially, but when engaged in something as fun as tossing pumpkins, we could pay the elevation no mind. And as the sun dropped low in the west, we had a lovely view of the ridge on the far side of the Susquehanna River, the autumn leaves shining gold in the evening light. Jem got to toss the very last pumpkin, one of the biggest -- only ten or fifteen pounds, but entirely satisfying. Scott lowered us down and then put the truck away, and we shoveled the pumpkin guts into a small pile (I went back and drove it all to a compost pile the next day). And not an hour after arriving we drove home, "with the footage in the can" -- and the memories of a family outing to throw pumpkins off a fire engine to last forever. Thanks, Scott, and thanks to the whole Bloomsburg Fire Department; it's a pleasure living here and working with you.

OK now for next year you need some slow motion shots of the pumpkins going splat. You have almost a whole year to work out how to do that Oren. Maybe a noted cinematographer that we both know can help with that. Phil
