Average speed?
Depends on the area, Montrose to nucla is an easy 25 mph, nucla to moab can be much slower in areas.
Great video!
Thanks! It’s such a great area!
Can you go back on the same trail ?
Yes, it’s not one way, but can be difficult to pass people going the other way.
Have you ever done cinnamon pass? Or wanted to? Let’s us know down 👇
We did the loop last year and camped near silverton. You guys passed up some great fishing at San Cristobal. We parked our Can am off the road and tossed kastmasters. All trout were released, but what a blast!
Yeah lake San Cristobal is great, we were short on time this day and couldn’t stop. Lots of great fishing holes in the San Juan’s!
What tire u running. Just got back. Had a flat on 315 mt goodyears
I have nittos on this Jeep, knock on wood, this is the second set over 9 years and no flats.
@wheelinoutwest do you have a drop pin to this trail head?
It would be easier to share on Facebook messenger or instagram dms.
Governor Basin has given a few of us bad vibes. Can’t explain why/how. Just kind of a “get out” thing
Yeah, it’s those large imposing peaks surrounding it! Also, I have seen a vehicle slide off the road up on the optional one way route that goes up a little farther.
good morning, i would be interested in hearing your thought on your front trailing arms or leading arms. what lead you down that path, i am starting a new buggy and would like to get some real world input on them in the front thanks
Well, the guy who designed our trailing\leading arm car is a go fast ultra 4 person. For positives I would say, smooth riding through whoops and rough stuff. Packaging big shocks is easier Longer travel suspension with shorter shock bodies Negatives Harder to get sharper 45 degree steering The shocks can unload more Trailing\leading arms are more work to build than regular control arms. Those are some things that come to mind.
@@wheelinoutwest thanks. and when you say unload more, do you mean it will push over more than typical coil over would?
@@chappychaplin7891 yes, as you have to run stronger springs than a normal coilover.
@@wheelinoutwest well. Would you do it again on a new build knowing what you know now?
Such a cool trip! And beautiful place!
Thanks! This area is one of the best parts of Colorado!
Can Michelin Defenders make it through this trail?
Depends on the vehicle they are on. However, those tires are mostly street tires, I had similar Michelins on my work vehicle, as popped a tire on an easier road just a week ago.
@@wheelinoutwest Tacoma with a small lift. The tires are 5 years old now. Will be visiting the area in a few weeks and thought I could hit up that trail.
@@The_Worldwides the vehicle is fine, the tires could be an issue.
What do you do for work?
I in management for a power transmission organization. Sometimes I have to travel a fair amount.
Keep at it and don't give up. I really enjoy the buggy content and you sharing your experiences. You've definately inspired a few people to get going on their own projects.
Thanks, I appreciate that. It’s hard to stay motivated to keep posting on social media, but comments like this are what keep me going!
One of my favorite places ❤
Thanks! It really is an awesome area
@@wheelinoutwest My first time there I was in work van ( 2wheel drive) doing a job for a week , partner and I went exploring on some crazy trails we worked that van pretty good when we returned home boss was less than impressed as the van was full of scratches all down the sides lol , luckily wasn’t fired.
@@danielvalentin6852 wow! That had to have been wild in a two wheel drive !
My stock 2016 LR4 made it up this. Im running K02s with a heavy duty package from factory.
No it didn’t.
Didn't you know, every motor on Market Place runs when they pull it. That's why they pull it to put another motor in. Good luck. I hope this one's legit!
😂 that’s true! It’s always a crapshoot buying used motors! That’s why in the past I just did full tear downs of them. This time I don’t feel like tearing it down, so it will be a gamble!
@@wheelinoutwest I hope this one works out for the time being. At least long enough to get you back on the trail before the end of the year. Let it be a winter project or something.
I watch for the buggy content keep it up,, Jeeps are too common.
Thanks for the feedback! It’s tough because buggies are a smaller niche than say full body 4x4, so it’s hard to reach as many people as say full body builds. We will continue to have a mixture of both.
Thought I would share this! When I decided to get into overlanding a number of years ago, my intention was to buy a JK Rubicon. But after 6 months of analyzing that Jeep, I could not buy one because they’re constantly breaking down. Even my neighbors with JKs all got rid of them. I bought a Toyota FJ Cruiser in 2022 and have not had any problems with it - buy a Toyota!
I hear ya, but we bought this Jeep new in 2015, and plan to keep it indefinitely, we get attached to things.
@@wheelinoutwest My wife and I were just in Ouray last month to attend the Rocky Mountain Toyota Roundup and fell in love with that area. We were in Montross for dinner and wow what a clean city; really impressed!
🏆⭐😎🙏 Thank you for sharing this
Thanks for watching and for the comment!
That is one of the biggest things I miss about spending my summers in Colorado as a kid. The fishing there was absolutely AMAZING!
Yeah, it is great fishing too!
Have you ever been to Creede, or wanted to go? Let us know down below!
So does the timing have to be messed with to change the cam?
Yes, you just put it back to the stock location, which is pretty easy once you read the manual, or watch a video.
Thanks for the replay one last question if I take off the passenger head can I check the cam from there to look for damage or is it hidden? I am more of a body man than mechanic
Can I inspect the cam when I take off the passenger side head?
😂 I’m glad I’m not the only one! That was exactly what my shop looked like 😂 oil covering the floor and blood running down my head
😂 it makes such a mess! No matter what I do!
If it’s just the transmission bell housing that’s cracked. ATI makes a bell housing that bolts in place using the oil pump bolts. You just cut the old housing off and bolt on the new one. They hold up better than the stock case.
That is a fantastic idea! Thank you! After you mentioned that I do remember seeing an article about that once, that’s what I am going to do.
You need a shop to work in. Like an actual shop with a lift so you can stand under the rigs and all those tall fluid pans and tall jacks and all the good stuff. With how custom and crazy your builds are you deserve a badass shop man! I don’t know what your property is like and your house and all, but it seems like you should work on building like a 30x30 or 40x40 shop.
I wish! We are pretty comfortable in our current house, but don’t have room to expand, unless I add on to my current detached garage. The biggest issue is we are locked in at a super low interest rate. Moving right now would be tough. Someday we may make a change, but the kids are in a great neighborhood with their friends.
Make a trans adapter for your badlands jack. I made one for my old Jack. Worked pretty good. Enjoy your garage therapy. 🍻
That’s a great idea! You may have to send me a pic of what you made?
Life choices😂🤷♂️. It’s worth it.
😂 it is worth it! But sometimes I think we got to be crazy to do this!
I cracked my k case for my 700r4. It had just been recently rebuild, so I just swapped the guts to a new case like you mentioned. Also i got the HF trans jack (the bigger one). it works great. I have loaned it out multiple times.
Thanks, That is good to hear about the hf trans Jack, I am going to look into it!
Working in a hot garage during the summer is a shitty time… I feel ya I just finished my new build ready for trail hero!
I agree, the heat kills me!🥵 I saw your buggy on Facebook I believe, it looked great, nice work!😎
@@wheelinoutwest thanks man you inspired me to get off my ass
@@don_crawla6195 I am glad to hear that! Thanks!
What's up with your audio, Rob?
I noticed when on the road, the jeep had a lot of background noise in it, is that what you were referring to?
@@wheelinoutwest It comes and goes, but I noticed it in one of your previous videos and I figured you might not know about it. It's not going to help you grow your channel.
@@slickrock1371, thanks. I have tried a number of things from the external go pro micro phones, to the Bluetooth type. The blue tooth seem very sensitive to accidentally getting scratchy, but the go pro external picks up back ground noise sometimes. I will keep working on it, thanks!
We have done Ouray Colorado several times now enroute to Moab from Tn. When would you recommend the best time for the wildflowers. Wife wants a scenic trip this year and not so much rock crawling!. I get to go back to Moab in 26! LOL
From my experience mid to late July has been pretty good for wild flowers. As you get deeper into August it can start getting cold up high, and they can start to wilt.
I've been over Stony on motorcycles, four wheelers, and Jeeps. Daytime and night time. Rain, sleet, and sun. The only part of the trail that was ever a little sketchy to me was Pole creek, the water level is usually a bit lower and less flow early in the day. I've had the water come up to the bottom of the gas tank on my Suzuki DR650. It's a fun, and scenic trail and pass.
Yeah, someone got swept away in pole creek last year, it just goes to show how dangerous a seemingly unassuming pass like this can be. Unfortunately I read another post last night on Facebook of more emergency responders heading to this pass again.
We have a lot of those narrow shelf trails in N. Idaho, just like Colorado does. They really add the "Pucker factor" when snow wheeling and your tires head for the edge! I don't know of anyone going off one yet, but you really have to have a solid rig with some good skills before anyone will break trail going up them with you!
Yeah, that would be really sketchy snow wheeling! People have a hard enough time in dry roads!
If you haven’t, try Schofield pass. But make sure it’s open before going.
I agree that’s a great one, we have run it many times, here is last summer! ruclips.net/video/z1-Tpg0MmAc/видео.htmlsi=EPqEF3TmIQT67DoC
I, the wife, get so scared of these tight tippy sections along mountain cliff face. You guys did great! 👍
Thanks! Yeah, those tippy spots feel terrible!
Most local guys can get you a new shaft in 1-2 days Adam’s ships next day.. Buy a cam Position sensor. It’s going to go any time…
That’s a good point, I was just surprised oreillys carries entire drivelines! Thanks for the heads up on the sensor.
If you ever make plans to hit more mountain trails, I would love to join you guys sometime. It’s a bit of a drive for me so I would need to plan it but love getting up in the mountains
Well, my crawlers are down for a bit, so we may be mostly hitting the mounts trails, especially through fall. What about the third weekend in September? That’s typically about peak colors in The San Juan’s?
That joint that your referring to is called a Rzeppa joint and it’s absolute garbage. When you lift a JKU anything more then like 3”, or if you just have a lot of suspension travel then that front driveshaft is known to blow easily. Good that you found a quick and easy replacement though. Adams is my go to.
Thanks, I couldent recall the name. I was really surprised o Reillys had entire drivelines in stock!
👌
Remember Rob: Happy wife/ Happy life! Give Lydia what she wants. Lol
😂 yep! I am tearing the car down anyway, might as well swap axle!
It’s best to go off peak tourist times, but once you go, you gotta go back back again and again. Glad I’m only six hours away.
I agree, we just live down the road a half hour from most of these trails, but this summer we had so many kids sports after work, we couldent do our usual evening runs.
@@wheelinoutwest When I lived in NYC during high school and college years, we never went to places like the top of the Empire State Building ,or the Statue of Liberty, or The Natural History Museum. They were so easy to get to, we figured we could go anytime. Tourists come from around the world to see famous and significant attractions that w were very cavalier about due to proximity.many residents of Manhattan never visit Empire State Building because they can do it anytime and end up never seeing it. Part of the allure of any attraction is its difficulty getting to it.
Trailhero??
Maybe, the only problem is we never got a camp spot, are you going?
@@wheelinoutwest yes I will be there! I’m staying at the sand hollow resort.
How much does it cost to build a kids buggy?
It varies widely, but I think you could do a decent one under 10 grand, depending on parts availability. Thomas at Fabn 801 would know better.
I can’t wait to get out there and spend a week exploring!
There is so much to see and explore! When you coming out?
@@wheelinoutwest I want to wait until I can do a week long trip. I’ll probably plan it for next year.
All the year's we visited. We never made it up to Yankee Boy Basin. Always stayed down at Silverton or over at Lake City. So after going over Black Bear or Ophir and then returning via Imogene.. everyone was ready for supper...
I did the "secret" basin trail in 2019 and just a few weeks ago in 2024. Couldnt believe how much it has been chewed up in a few years. In fact, ALL the trails were rougher and more rutted out. Black bear actually scared me this time on those off camber bits lol. Personally, I think the trails are getting abused and overused by the explosion in SXS traffic. On the engineer cinnamon pass side, I felt like I had to pull over every 30 seconds to let a group of SXS pass. Most were nice but a few blew by me and spewed rocks all over my new gladiator. Did not appreciate that much. 😊 Great video!
Thanks! I agree, these mountains have been getting a lot busier, it’s one of the reasons I don’t go up there as much as I used to. The roads have definitely been getting rougher in some places, and that may be why there is such an uptick in accidents up there. As someone who also has side by sides, I see why so many people don’t like them, it can be pretty annoying when people want to race around the mountains in them, a lot of these people don’t understand trail etiquette. We prefer the comfort of our Jeep while in the mountains, also we stay dry in the rain.
Just ran yankee boy three weeks ago and went all the way up to wheat’s lake. It was awesome and beautiful !
The scenery up there in the middle of summer is just amazing!
@@wheelinoutwest yes it is and we found another spot we are definitely heading back to next year hopefully 🤞
Have you done Radical Hill? IMO thats the sketchiest one...
We ran radical many years ago, which is up near Breckenridge. This video is more referring to the San Juan mountains area which is in southwest Colorado.
I know exactly which secret basin you went into. My wife and I with a few of our friends discovered that basin probably 12 years ago. We decided to return when we visited the area about three weeks ago. I had forgotten how beautiful it is! And the color of the water in the first lake was stunning. Like it was glacier fed. I do love that area. I've got a 2016 JKUR Hard Rock just like yours only it's Tank Green. I bought it new and love it. It's a nice compliment to my CJ7 crawler. Didi I mention I love that area? 😁
That’s awesome! Your jku is almost the same year and everything! I agree, we live near it, and forget how beautiful and amazing this area is! We are going to focus on a different trail/area of the San Juan’s for the rest of summer. We just need to get our fill in before summer ends! That’s great you know the basin, I am sure the secret is out, but at least people have to look for it.
The scenery in Yankee Boy Basin is some of the best in Colorado! Have you ever been, or wanted to go? Let us know down below 👇
