The Unseen Bali | A Travel and Culture Documentary
-
Me and My crew, Benjamin Bellette and Gemma Baker set out to film a pilot for a travel series aimed at recreating something that has been lost from this world. In 2018 Anthony Bourdain passed on from this world to the next, with him went a curious mind, a sharp wit that was tempered with the cynicism of a former drug addict and blue collar worker, who some how got gifted the best job known to man.
Im no AB nor am I trying to be, but this series is as much a selfish effort for me to create more of the episodes Id binge on, that are no longer being released.
Join me, in my journey, its cost me a year of my life and the better part of my saving just to put out this one episode, if you would ...

This is the first episode of hopefully a long adventure, where I selfishly satisfy my own curiosity for everything worldly.

It's not a problem of overtourism, tourists bring in billions of dollars every year. The biggest problem is that the government is not reinvesting it. If they reinvested just one year of income, they could fix all the problems

Bali is the Island of the Gods. Yes, some people visit wishing to feel like Gods. Perhaps some people visit Bali to feel closer to God. To me, Bali has always been a mystical place with a strong spiritual centre. So rare in todays world. Through the development and tourism that ethos remains, carried by each successive generation of Balinese.

Tourism has undeniably changed Bali, but it has also been its lifeline. Without it, many Balinese families would struggle, especially since other industries there are not as developed. Despite the influx of foreigners, Balinese remain deeply attached to their traditions. They still hold ceremonies, practice their rituals, and maintain their cultural identity - something that many tourists fail to notice because they are too busy looking for signs of "loss" rather than the resilience of tradition. And the use of Indian music? That's just ironic. I think you should be careful about accusing others, like the girls on the swing, of ignorance while making a rather ignorant decision yourself. You don't want to get caught up in a performative outrage, do you? Complaining about tourism while being a tourist yourself. It's one thing to criticize overdevelopment, but if you really cared, you would have taken the time to understand the complexities of tourism in Bali rather than just pushing your own narrative. And as for the subtitles... the number of typos in the names in Indonesian and Balinese is simply unacceptable. Surely you could have asked a local (your newfound “friends” and “family” included) for help? There are so many Indonesians in Australia too. Do you think these names are unimportant because your target audience is foreigners anyway and so you don't need to worry about accuracy? Ultimately, I can't imagine you are really interested in understanding Bali, or maybe you just want to complain and feel superior.

Thank you for your message. Interesting points… I’m not a tourist I’m being a docu journalist, if I was to soften or distort my thoughts or feelings that would in genuine and dishonest. The music came from a catalogue of Indonesian gamelan music, which I assume is not Indian. In my closing statements I draw attention to the traditions standing the test of time, and I never projected my own assertions as narratives. I talked to many people on the journey, and amplified those voices, contextualising my own interpretations and feelings about them. I think you should be aware of the irony of trying to impress that others should indeed fall into line with how you think and feel about a thing, I see you have made videos too, I sure hope they do well. This is the start of my journey doing this and I spent a lot of my savings doing it. I appreciate your feedback, please note that there are many things I will do differently next time. The video was shot in 2022 and has only just been released, a lot of work has gone into creating it. But it’s not intended to be perfect. It’s intended to open a conversation not tell people how to think about a thing. Judging by the three paragraphs you have written I’ll assert my intention has succeeded. I hope you measure my improvement on the next video and let me know where I did better as well as things I can do better. See you on the next one. David

@ I love how you just assumed that I, an Indonesian, wouldn’t recognize my own country’s traditional music. Of course I wasn’t talking about the gamelan, I was referring to the music at 37:38 which is clearly Indian tabla and tanpura. That said, I do appreciate your video craftsmanship; the production quality is solid. I’m sure your intentions were good, but as they say, the road to a certain place is paved with those. Hope you take the criticism in stride and turn it into something constructive. Cheers. 🍻

I grew up attending Jakarta International School from 1989 to 1994. Back then, Bali was our playground. I recently returned in 2024, and Bali has deteriorated significantly. There is overpopulation and too many damn bule, especially those "Ozzie Ozzie" folks. Great video! I prefer my home town San Diego! Gila bule banyak banget di Bali. Parah.

Things Bali need to improve: 1. Town plans 2. Terrible roads 3. Terrible public transports, or the lack thereof 4. Crappy human resources 5. Unfortunately it still falls under "islamic watching eyes", which means gambling is illegal. But everything else that could be considered "sins" is somehow okay. So that's weird. Other than those, it's an amazing place

One day you might like to update your voice over. Pictures good. Reflections though are not fully informed. Girls in dresses on swings aren't less cool than a man who likes motor bikes. The person who brought you food wasn't like an Italian Nona, they were showing quintessential Balinese hospitality. If you'd spoken with either swing girl or your hostess, maybe you'd have enjoyed more and been able to put aside the studied cynicism.
