Off The Top / Fishing
Добавлен 14 ноя 2011
What you'll find here is mainly top water fishing for Australian Bass, Mangrove Jack, Saratoga, Sooty Grunters, etc
You'll also see me fish sub-surface...but that's always my last resort ;)
I love using baitcasting gear, so you will see me use mainly BFS for my lighter outfits and standard size baitcast for heavier applications.

My BEST JACKS session EVER! #mangrovejack #mangrovesnapper
another great spot mate, I have been dusted by many a big jack in there chasing bream.
Yeah I have no doubt there’s big ones there, just managed to find little pups this time 🤷🏽♂️ I’ll definitely try again! Cheers!
I found the 148mm gancraft to not swim to good. I have the sink model. I find it nose dives on a 45 then levels out when you work it. Seems the 125 and 178mm have better actions
Thanks for the comment Alex! Unsure if you have seen any of my older videos (or Dan mentioned this to you) but I’ve been a big fan of the 128 for a while just because of it’s weight which I can just throw with my usual combo I take with me in the creeks (which I usually like to only take 1 rod with my small yak)… Fishing canals I thought it’d be easy enough taking a second slightly heavier rod dedicated to the slightly larger glide but I must admit I couldn’t really see it swimming because of both how dark the lure was and the glare…that made me lose a bit of confidence in it and saw myself throwing the trusty splashie most of the time. I’ll try a less dark one next time see if I can see it swimming…but sounds like I might not like it as much as the 128… I honestly don’t have a rod capable of throwing the 178 yet…been looking at a heavier Edge which I’ll probably get at some point coz I scored a couple of good priced 178’s off the Japanese auctions not long ago…I’ll be keen to try that too!
@@Off_The_Top_Fishingyeah ive seen your videos on the 128mm. The 178mm is a different beast, alot of fun but very heavy. Hopefully you can have sucess with the 148mm, its possible either the sink or float version i have is just the wrong option
Really enjoyed that! good fishing
Thanks mate! By far not my best episode in the canals (on my 2 previous ones I get much bigger fish) but I’m glad you still enjoyed it! Love your seabass sessions too mate, really impressive sized seabass you got there!!reminds me of my dad as he loves chasing seabass in Spain 🙂
Love the canal videos, if only we had something like this.
Thanks mate, canals are a good alternative for when the creeks aren’t fishable but it gets a bit repetitive out there, if you get a good day full of action it is fun but a grind in the canals isn’t fun…but, like every other water system, you need to learn and try to hit them when there’s more chances of success! Come up here next spring and I’ll take you fishing!!
where is this?
SEQ canals mate, a couple of different systems shown in this video. Other systems and bigger jacks on my previous pontoon bashing videos 🤙🏼
Good to see there are plenty of Jacks breeding in there. Fun video Ramon 🤙
Thanks mate! Apparently they breed out on the reefs and these little fellas come inshore to spend their first few years, then after a certain age/size they head back offshore. Still a good sign seeing them making themselves comfortable in the local estuaries to grow
@Off_The_Top_Fishing well there you go, I didn't know that. I knew they headed to the reefs when they get bigger but didn't realise that they start their lives out on the reefs. It makes sense.
Nice Ramon, beautiful little jacks 👌. Thanks for sharing mate!
Thanks mate, yeah they’re beautiful creatures at any size hey 😍
@Off_The_Top_Fishing absolutely mate!
They love it in that section canal, I always see the trevs going off there.
That’s true, I haven’t been there too many times but more than 50% of the times I see Trev action in that area
@Off_The_Top_Fishing its cool to see someone else fish it. Some big tillies in there mixed in with them
Lip grips for bass😂
Haha well, yeah, as you could probably see with the 2 fish I dropped in the video I’m rather clumsy holding them with my thumb haha…land based is ok but since I mainly fish off the yak I was sick of fish jumping off my hands and either making a mess between my legs or hitting their head hard on the side of the yak…plus when I fish treble lures I personally don’t like sticking my finger in their mouth while there’s 2 trebles just next to it…hooked myself badly once and I certainly don’t want to repeat that 😂
Awesome video, sick topwater strikes! Looks like a nice topwater frog for BFS fishing
Thanks mate! Yeah it’s unfortunate that they are discontinued and very hard to find now…
@@Off_The_Top_Fishing daang, was planning to get one of these after watching your video lol
@ you still might be lucky if you keep an eye on eBay 😉
New subscriber. I like your content mate, what part of SEQ are you in?
Thanks mate! Appreciate the support and glad you’re enjoying the content! I’m from Brissy area 🤙🏼
Loved the video Ramon 👌 What a bummer the big bugger that bent the hook dropped the frog.
Thanks Mark! Yeah, that one was a proper! Most probably would’ve been the biggest I’ve ever hooked up in this little creek, I just couldn’t stop him and you can see the big tail when it shows it and how much water it displaces…it definitely wasn’t a baby
@Off_The_Top_Fishing absolutely! Big commotion when it ran .
Another great episode and luv the skinny creek action. U like this rod are there any other you recommend like this in the 2.5 to 6gram range. Even 1 that would handle 40cm bass regularly. i checked out Miller drifter but was a bit long and 1 piece.
Thanks mate! What length rod are you after? I see you find the 6’0 Drifter too long so I guess you are after something shorter? I do love my Edge 602 but that’s a 6’0 rod too…I don’t know many rods below 6’0 with some guts (most I know are more trout rods). I’ve managed half decent bass on this Tenryu and seen people get even barra and jacks on it! However I do feel it a bit noodly for my liking…I wish I had been using the Edge 602 when I hooked up the big one in the video…that’s why I’m currently getting a custom rod made using a 601 Northfork Composite blank cut down to 5’10 so I can use it in the very skinny creeks…I’m sure there’s more rods that would fit your needs and I’m not aware of so I’d recommend you posting on the BFS Australia Facebook group and ask the question, plenty of knowledge in there, I’m sure people will throw some good options for you to consider!
That's a butt plug bruz 😜
this looks like the same system where I first discovered your channel when you were using the modded abu
Not the same, that wasn’t even a creek haha that was a drain that usually doesn’t have running water, but yes, it looks similar
Awesome video mate! I'm glad you pointed out that catfish nest, I've always seen them but never known what they were. Some beautiful bass there, I could feel the hurt when that big one bricked ya! Thanks for taking us on your mission 👍🎣
Thanks for your support Jake! I’m glad you enjoyed the episode! I do love spending time in the local little creeks every now and then, they can definitely surprise you with some quality fish! It’s unfortunate that this time I couldn’t land them…the one that bricked me and a couple of missed boofs were all decent!
Great video! I’ve just subscribed to your channel. What size hooks do you use to fish the imposter prawns?
Thanks mate! Really appreciate the feedback and support! I’m pretty sure it’s 3/0 TT Chinlockz, feel free to pm me on my Facebook page (Off The Top - Fishing) and I’ll send you a couple of photos of how it sits on the plastic 🙂 If you’re into jacks videos feel free to jump onto my playlists and you’ll find one specific on Jacks videos, if you liked this one I’m sure you’ll find heaps more you like in there 😉
@ cheers mate , will do.
I watched almost all your videos and notice you are lucky to use many different outfits. I'm interested in why and what you use for different conditions, fish and lures. Could you do some videos on outfits. I what could you recommend for a shorter rod for casting from land using bfs surface ie small mmd splash prawn. I use a Calcutta 30 mainly but also have a 1500 Abu, Gekka and cormorant
Thanks for the support and I’m glad you are enjoying the content! If I’m totally honest, I do have more outfits than I’d need…I keep using different ones because I do like to use all my gear every now and then. However, there are some things I follow when I select my gear for a particular session…rod length depends on the size of the creek, skinny creeks with plenty of vegetation and casting accuracy required usually means short rod…larger rivers or man made canals as I’ve done recently usually translates into longer rods, although I rarely use rods longer than 6’6… Rod power will depend on lure size/weight I’m expecting to use and fish species and size I’m expecting in the area…reel selection is similar…if I’m expecting to cast very small stuff I’ll bring more finesse BFS and if I’m not expecting to throw anything too light then I’ll take a less finesse BFS or a 70 size reel like the Steez CT…that also goes together with expecting bigger fish usually… Lure selection will depend on several factors…fish species is the most obvious but then time of the day, water clarity, whether it is overcast or sunny, etc.. With regards of making videos about the outfits…thanks for the suggestion, however it is a format that would require some preparation and I’m not sure when I can find the time for it…as you noticed, I write down all my gear used on every video and I usually try to explain a bit why I picked it (not always but sometimes). If you jump onto my channel main page, check out the playlist called ‘how to use specific lures’ and you’ll find videos where I try to explain why I picked that lure that day and I show how I like using it 🙂 Also check out my Facebook page and you’ll see how I explain some stuff about the gear on my posts. Once again, thanks for your support! Cheers!!
Good video mate 👍 keep up the good work
Thanks mate!
Nice fish do bull sharks attack ur kayak at all
Thanks mate! The places I usually go only have very small bull sharks, especially in the brackish waters of the creeks, they either attack my lures, attack my fish once I hook them up or spook when they see me…so yeah, fortunately I never had one bothering me at all. Check out the video in the link, from around 9:00 onwards and you’ll see a few bull shark interactions, including one eating my fish next to the yak ruclips.net/video/FyrTHgkKejE/видео.htmlsi=8LhyWwmyGmB7HMZa
Thanks mate That's good knowledge bro it's good just be safe keep up the good work mate u even throw the lure and hit the kayak still got a jack how funny
@ haha yeah I noticed that both good fish in that session came from bad casts where the lure hit something and bounced back into the water 😂🤣 the Trev was similar, hit the wall first and then boom!
Hahahha that was a classic I'm pretty sure it was the bule kayak that mdd splashie hit
Thanks for that great video. That’s real dedication fishing on through the rain.
Thanks mate! Glad you enjoyed the episode! It was a fun sesh! I don’t really mind getting wet if the fish are on but the thunderstorm approaching was the show stopper…too risky with a carbon fibre rod in my hands 😬
@ Wise move, or you could end up a small pile of carbon too. Looking forward to more of your videos in ‘25.
@@JH-nh9xx thanks mate! If new to the channel, feel free to jump onto my playlists…this way you can watch the videos you’re more interested in 🙂 imo the previous pontoons video I uploaded a few weeks ago was even better than this one!
Awesome session 🤙 I enjoyed the vide.
Thanks Mark! You should give the pontoons a go!
@Off_The_Top_Fishing I think I should too. Looks super fun🤙
Awesome size trevor mate and good sesh all round.. i hope most home owners all good with ya fishing around the docks, nothing worse than a disgruntled owner to ruin a days fishing. You definitely got those jacks dialled mate well done
Thanks mate!! Yeah, fortunately they are mostly friendly, I even stop and have a chat with some if they ask me how I’m doing.
Nice bro what a session, do you usually do this well?
Thanks mate! Haha I try my best but fishing is fishing and things don’t always go as planned…however, if you check out my previous videos you’ll find some good action! Mainly in the creeks but I also uploaded a great pontoons session not long ago. If you’re into jacks just jump into my playlists and check out the ‘Mangrove Jacks Fishing ‘ playlist, if you liked this video I’m sure you’ll enjoy plenty more in there 🙂
Nice jack mate 👍
Thanks mate! I much prefer chasing them in the creeks but the early rains this season stuffed up the creeks too early…
is that a big eye trev? really crazy bust up. Im so keen to go up there. Hopefully in 2025 I can visit my sister in Brissy
Yeah, a couple of people confirmed what I already suspected, big eye Trev. These guys are torpedos too haha but the 41cm jack had a stronger first run than the Trev, trevs just use their side, swimming in circles to avoid coming up after their first couple of runs, as you could see. Whenever you come up here I’ll try put you onto some good fish, mate!!
What an action-packed session again, wow 🤗 I really liked the trev action as well, those feisty hunters are not mocking around once they decide to commit. The jack's deep red colours looked stunning. Good call on leaving the water in the storm, mate.
Thanks mate! Yeah it is definitely a cool thing to witness the schools of trevs hunting! And yup, I don’t mind getting wet but as soon as I heard thunder in the distance I called it…not worth the risk!
Nice man! Beautiful trev and that jack was really cool. Love it when they go that dark burgundy type of red. I watched this in 5 segments, the in-laws are here for Christmas and they kept interrupting me haha
Haha thanks! I hope you’re having a great Xmas break with the family, mate!
@Off_The_Top_Fishing cheers mate, you too!
Bufff quin bon dia de pesca i en molte varietat de espècies. Enhorabona
Si si, llàstima que no vaig treure cap altre Jack maco…però va ser molt divertit, molta acció!
Yep Big Eye Trev !
Thanks Michael! I was pretty sure it was a big eye but it was good to get confirmation from others!
Big eyes
Thanks mate! Yeah, I was pretty sure it was but thanks for confirming!
Sick!! What lure should u use to catch my first?
First jack??
What is the little bait box you took the biovex from?
Hey mate, they are some Meiho boxes with some silicone inserts by Jackson. Here’s a link to the post I put up on my Facebook page back when I bought them. Check out the comments as I have more photos with the actual products with descriptions facebook.com/share/p/19tkJvtVGW/?mibextid=wwXIfr
Damn! Unlucky not to find the hooks.
Yeah, that’s top water fishing sometimes hey 😂🤣
Another great video very jealous of your skills and gear. Would this be the short creek BFS rod you would recommend and what would you recommend for the next class weight up?
Thanks mate! Yes, I definitely recommend this rod for the streams, however for heavier applications I m a big fan of Edge rods (as you can probably tell by my other videos), but that’s because I like very fast tapper rods, if you’d like a slightly heavier rod that has similar specs as the Tenryu I’m not sure which one recommend you…but I’m sure if you ask the question in the BFS facebook groups you will get a few useful answers 🙂
That was such a fun video, thanks again for letting me join you👍
Thanks Mark! I agree, it was a fun morning! I must admit I laughed a bit when editing and saw your face at 4:32 wading chest deep at 5:30am 😂 wish I had filmed you (or myself) while swimming with the rod in our mouth 😂🤣
@Off_The_Top_Fishing 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Yes I had a laugh also, I have my shoulders tucked up pretty high 🤣 . Yes that would have been a funny bit of footage of us swimming across.
Un lloc molt bonic i en força peix. Que gaudiu molt
Si si! Aquí es on vam anar amb tu el primer cop que vas pescar bass aquí a Australia, però en comptes de kayak i riu amunt vam anar caminant i riu avall.
Well done mate! What a way to spend your birthday. Beautiful looking creek, are you walking downstream due to where you accessed it? Thanks for sharing mate 👍🎣
Thanks mate! Yeah, just walking downstream because to head upstream you need a yak, I’ve done it before but I just wanted to keep it simple and go for a walk/swim 😅
@Off_The_Top_Fishing nice work mate 👍
Cool foot session mate, unreal the clarity of that water, beautiful spot well done to you and ya mate
Cheers mate, yeah it was a beauty of a day!! ☀️
what a great looking spot bro. Might have to dust off the BFS gear soon! keep the BFS content coming🔥
Thanks mate!! Yeah, I’ve got another wading BFS sesh to edit while on holidays so keep your eyes peeled for that!! Thanks for the support and glad you’re enjoying the content!!
This brings back some nice memories, including my first yellow belly before the big floods 😊 Good to see how the system is well and alive, it holds a very nice population of small bass. Fingers crossed in a few years time it will feature some brutes again
Yeah mate, I was telling Mark about your yella in your first session and my monster that I swam after when it snapped my line…wonder if going upstream on the yak produces a little better quality fish? Was tempted to try that on Tuesday morning but ended up wading the other creek… Thanks again for the heads up! I would have never thought of fishing there again if it wasn’t for you telling me the other day!
@ Ah I am so glad that you guys decided to give it a visit too. I think now we have a pretty good idea about the state of that system. Yes, a few km’s further upstream could be pretty interesting. Well, there is only one way to figure it out. 😉
@ yup, give it a go if the rain doesn’t stuff things up!
tap tap tapparoo

Great session mate can’t beat top water hits💪🏼
Thanks mate!! 100% top water is the go!! Hence my channel’s name haha
ruclips.net/user/shortsdQ_HJ58jdkg?si=jeD7852zNtDyZWNu
BIG fish
Great to see that they do take jerkbaits in that creek. Ive put so many hours into trying to get them to take one, with no luck
I rarely use any sub-surface presentations which makes me feel outside my comfort zone when I do but seeing so many jacks follow and hit the glide without committing and that sun up in the sky made me want to try something running a bit deeper, and it worked!!
Love that system are you Sydney or Brisbane ?
@@marknissen8545 thanks mate! Up in Brisbane area 🤙🏼
@ I thought so. Would love to find a spot in Sydney anything like that 😂🤯
@ sometimes these are the less obvious places, hence no one else bothers trying…you’ll go through a few fails but when you finally come across a good one it’ll be worth the effort 😉 I know bass anglers that have lived less than 5min from this place for years and they didn’t even know there was bass in this place! If you like it, go to my ‘Urban fishing’ playlist and there’s a few videos recorded in this little creek. The last one (the review of the Evergreen JxJ Minnow) I explore a few new pools in this creek!
Great stuff bro, that last Jack wow what a donkey man top session most definitely 👍🏽
Thanks mate!! Yeah that last fish was a proper hey!!
Well done mate .. those roos were awesome to see swimming.. 1 is better than none mate
Yeah, definitely a cool thing to see in the wild!
