You’d be advised not to visit Scotland. The SNP our government has introduced a tax on travellers. Today 1st of April they’ve brought out a new law “hate crime “ so folks with that in mind be advised.

Thanks for the info. I see it’s an additional tax on travelers saying overnight in hotels/hostels etc. They say it’s to help pay for the pressure that the additional travelers put on the infrastructure and cities. Curious how much extra it is. What do you mean by “hate crime”

    • @iceninja46

@@journeyman_ram It is a law introduced by a majority of Holyrood politicians to bring Scotland's hate crime laws up to date with the likes of England and a few other countries. The problem is the MSM are making it out to be bad for free speech which it really isn't but it is the usual anti-Scottish news that is always on. It was a Majority of Scottish Holyrood Politicians who passed this law yet you only ever hear it is the SNP's fault. The tax on travellers is basically for what you said...

The concept of what constitutes a “country” can vary based on political, historical, and social contexts. In the case of Scotland, it has a distinct identity, legal system, and education system, among other characteristics that contribute to its status as a country. Scotland does not have a president because it is not a republic; it is part of a constitutional monarchy under the British Crown. Scotland has its own devolved government, including the Scottish Parliament and the Scottish Government, which have powers over many aspects of domestic policy. As for an army, Scotland does not have its own separate military because defense matters are reserved to the UK government. The British Armed Forces are responsible for the defense of the entire United Kingdom, including Scotland. However, Scotland has historically contributed significantly to the UK’s military forces and has several military bases within its territory. This setup is part of the United Kingdom’s structure of devolved and reserved powers, where Scotland has autonomy over certain aspects of governance but shares other powers, like defense and foreign affairs, with the UK government. This arrangement allows Scotland to maintain aspects of its national identity and self-determination within the context of a larger sovereign state.

I used to work on Cockburn Street in the late 1970s, in what is now occupied by Viva Mexico. It is a fabulous street, as is nearby Victoria Street, just a few minutes away. Though the Old Town is interesting, I recommend also the New Town, which is literally a couple minutes' walk from the bottom of Cockburn Street. Go beyond the first four streets - Princes, Rose, George, Queen - which are all commercial, and down into the residential areas. Starting in Charlotte Square > Moray Place > Ainslie Place > Randolph Crescent. Turn right onto the Dean Bridge and look over both sides before doing an about face and heading down Bell's Brae into Dean Village. Explore there, then take the path under the Dean Bridge (at the bottom of Bell's Brae) to Stockbridge for shops and eats as well as Circus Place and St. Stephen Street. From the latter down Clarence Street and cut across to Saxe Coburg Place, at the far end of which there are stairs leading down to the fabulous series of short streets on Glenogle Road (with the large red-brick Glenogle Baths). From here you are minutes away from Canonmills/Inverleith and the Royal Botanic Gardens. From there - or anywhere along the way - you can walk back up the hill to the city centre. Check it out on a map. On a nice day walking that walkway is, IMO, one of the most enjoyable Edinburgh experiences. (Even better, after looking off Dean Bridge, take Belford Rd. instead of Bell's Brae - they're side by side - and start at the Gallery of Modern Art (One and Two) and get down to the walkway via steps at Belford Bridge. This will take you to Dean Village.) Whatever you decide to do, Edinburgh is a fantastic city...though its real gems lie just beyond the touristy bits.

Just so you know, since my father is a "gondoliere" (one of those guys who drive gondolas): 1. The prices are set by the municipality itself (Day ride is set at 80€ for 30 minutes, while between 7pm and 8am is 100€) so the Gondoliere doesn't decide much (sometimes they make you pay more than that though) 2. To become a Gondoliere it's really hard. You need to know how to swim very well, you basically need to be a lifeguard, you need to be a good rower, you need to attend a specific school (that teaches you the history of Venice and nowadays even english) and you also need to pass an exam that you can attempt only once every 5 years. Even if you happen to pass the exam you must do 12 months of stage. 3. Gondolieri don't earn that much because they don't have a constant flow of customers, sometimes they wait 2-3 hours to have one. An average income would be around 2500€ after-tax, which is surely higher than the average Italian income, but not that high if you live in Venice😂 4. On average, the cost of a gondola varies from 30.000€ to 50.000€; some specimens of particular refinement and preciousness of the finishes can have an even higher cost
