Iron Tango
Просмотров 932 месяца назад
Iron Tango was written years ago for the group Fantasie. Here it is reimagined for the jazz/spoken word group The Last Word. Along with Doug Lofstrom’s original taunting vocal, Marc Smith has added a humorous tale of a contrary senior citizen willfully blocking traffic, raging against computers and apps and trying to hold back the “expotential race” of our modern world. Great playing by the Las...
Sweet Georgia Brown
Просмотров 5713 месяца назад
“Sweet Georgia Brown” is a timeless jazz standard written in 1925 by Ben Bernie, Maceo Pinkard, and Ken Casey. Popular vocal versions include recordings by Ethel Waters, Cab Calloway, Ella Fitzgerald, and Bing Crosby, among countless others. Probably the best-known instrumental version was recorded by Brother Bones and His Shadows in 1949 which was adapted as the theme song for The Harlem Globe...
Si tu vois ma mere

This video is based on our version of Sidney Bechet’s si tu vois ma mère, most frequently translated as “if you see my mother…” The song was introduced to me by Mim Eichmann in Woody Allen’s film “Midnight in Paris,” in Bechet’s original recording. Fabulous! Especially when accompanied by Allen’s montage of Paris scenes, mostly at night. Though Bechet was most famous for his work on soprano sax...
Fantasie Revisited
Просмотров 1245 месяцев назад
Fantasie was first formed in 1974 as a composer’s workshop meeting in the basement studio of a house I shared with Kathleen Mooney (the house pictured in this video). The original group comprised Glenn Charvat (woodwinds and keyboards), Rick Panzer (keyboards and percussion), Tom Warren (drums and percussion) and Doug Lofstrom (bass and keyboards). Our work early on was heavy on free improv and...
Serenade to a Cuckoo
Просмотров 636 месяцев назад
As the pandemic was winding down in 2021, I did a video session with Mark Feldman and Sarah Allen. One of the tunes we played was one of my favorites, Serenade to a Cuckoo by Rashaan Roland Kirk. Great playing all the way around. Audio and video by Jakob Allen and Roland Kirk artwork by my good buddy Lance Brown. Enjoy!
Big Blues
Просмотров 1388 месяцев назад
Big Blues was originally composed in 2010 as part of a dance performance by Mordine and Co. i recently resurrected it for a series of recordings by New Quartet. Fluffed it up and added a lot of bass clarinet, masterfully played by Michael Levin! With Sarah Allen, drums; James Sanders, violin; Leandro Lopez Varady, piano and yours truly, Doug Lofstrom on bass. Enjoy!

Mirror Dance

This performance of Mirror Dance is from a 2016 concert of the Columbia College New Music Ensemble with my group the New Quartet. My last concert with the the New Music Ensemble (which I founded in 2001), this is about as strong as the group ever was. New Quartet members Leandro Lopez Varady on piano, James Sanders on violin, Michael Levin on bass clarinet and Sarah Allen on percussion helped p...

This is the first new video in several months. As usual, life intervenes: wedding, moving, vacations, etc. I hope to get back in a monthly groove, but who knows? I appreciate your attention and any support you can give. This new video is based on a New Quartet performance at Columbia College, from perhaps 2003 or 2004. The music is 3 songs by Abdullah Ibrahim and is kind of a New Quartet staple...
Junkyard in Paradise

In the summer of 1969, I took my first trip to California. We hitchhiked from LA to San Francisco, mostly in the open back of a pickup truck. Once out of LA, I was struck by how beautiful and pristine most of California was. Somewhere around Monterey, we suddenly came across a classic junkyard - several acres of chaotic automotive and agricultural junk, rusting away under the California sun - i...
Air Mail Special

Here is my video for March: Air Mail Special by Benny Goodman and Charlie Christian, performed by the New Quartet: Michael Levin, James Sanders, Leandro Lopez Varady, Sarah Allen and myself. Both parts of this video date back to the early years of New Quartet. Not sure of the exact date of the concert video, but it is probably from 2003 or earlier. Great video and audio quality from Derrick Boy...
Jitterbug Waltz

Here is my first video for 2022: Jitterbug Waltz. I have always loved much of the music of Fats Waller, with its dynamic stride-piano drive. Jitterbug Waltz usually has some of that, too, but here in the New Quartet arrangement, it is much more peaceful, like a stroll in the park - Central Park, to be exact! The music suggested New York in the 30’s and 40’s, so that’s where I went for images. M...
Fee Fi Fo Fum

Here is my video for December, Fee Fi Fo Fum, by Wayne Shorter. I was happy earlier this year to find out that my old friend violinist Mark Feldman had moved back to Chicago. Since Mark left Chicago in 1980, he has traveled around the world playing with the likes of John Zorn, Dave Douglas and John Abercrombie and recording several albums under his own name. Earlier this year I suggested we mak...
I’m still in that traffic jam
This is very very cool!
It's great to see you all doing the old Fantasie favorite with an added alte kaker rant. LOVE IT! (though it may hit a little too close to home for comfort)
Thanks, Jeff! Great that we get to check in with each other from time to time. Think this came out well. Was able to patch together the slightly raw live version with the more manicured studio version. (Pretty seamless!)
How nice. Great musicians. Your style fits the times so well. I'm sure it was a lot of work. So enjoyable.
Wonderful and faithful rendition by all the musicians; their playing, and the vintage flapper footage conjures the sassy attitude that must have befuddled the older generation of the age.
Great playing and singing and by the way, three cheers for all that fabulous footage?
Swingin’❗️
Sounds great! Really authentic
A truly lovely recording. Mike and James sound beautiful with the support of the Leandro, Doug, and Sarah. 5 minutes and 43 seconds of beauty!
Thanks Jeff! Great to hear from you! Hope all is well. Wish I could keep this fantastic band working. Luckily nobody in the band is depending on me for a paycheck!
So very sweet and beautiful to watch and hear. Makes for a mellow Sunday afternoon. Thanks, Everyone.
Beautiful.
wonderful
I usually don't comment on any of the performances, videos, art works. This just blew me away and it brought back a lot of good memories from living and performing in Chicago from 1954 to 1999. Our mutual friend Grant Strombeck was one of the most gifted artists I knew during my years in Chicago. I'll cherish all the sessions we had improvising aleatoric percussion tracks in his basement studio. I'm sure he would have been proud of your "Beat's Blues" gift
Hi Frank! Great to hear from you and glad you like Beats' Blues! It certainly is in the spirit of Grant. I had a lot of good sessions with him too and feel similarly about his gifts. He was also an inspiration for me as regards "keeping on keeping on" whether or not you receive world-wide accolades. The occasional good wishes from a friend is enough! Thanks!
Great sounds! Were some of those photos from the house where Mary and I stayed?
Yes. All the B & W clips except for the first two are from that house. The obvious video clips are from a video shot in 1983. Time travel!
Kool doug Wish i could have seen the band live
1:30❤
How fun! Thanks for posting, Doug. Any chance for a 2024 version? Oh. And I love the importance of Beethoven in a few of those pics!
Thanks Carol! Great to hear from you! I still have that bust of Beethoven. I once used for a photo on somebody's album cover. Will try to find that and send it to you. Let's chat sometime. Hope all is well!
Love this. I don’t share the memory but love the spirit.
Great Doug brings back some old memories. I remember Tom C and I took most of those photos Joe Bowlby
Hi Joe! Great to hear from you. Hope all is well. I remember you both being there, so I mentioned you both. Thanks for the great logo also!
Very cool. Wish I'd been around to hear this group. Nice video.
Wow, what a great memory piece! Great Job on the Edit Doug…and a fabulous group of musicians. Time sure did fly and wish it didn’t. I was grateful to have been to the house with you guys and was able to snap some photo’s at that time. Thanks for the memory.
Doug, This really sounds great!
Enjoyed this Doug. Very crisp, clean jazz with a creative flair. Instrumental work phenomenal! A great "jazz" trip.
Love it!
Great , Doug. The composition/performance combination displayed in this video is totally dynamite!!
Beautiful Doug!
Stop sending me your videos. I’ve asked you before. Stop. I don’t want to open my phone, see a video of your work and be reminded of how deeply you hurt me. Leave me alone. Please for god’s sake- take me off your list of people to whom you send your monthly videos. Or is your wife se f’ing them to me just to be nasty and mean? That’s the only vibe I ever get from either of you anymore. MEA E ME ALONE. PLEASE
Breath-taking!!!
Beautiful. And thanks, James. for your story. It breathes so many different contexts and emotions into the music and video.
Beautiful, Doug!
Love it ❤❤❤❤❤
Beautiful piece, wonderful ensemble. Your students are lucky! Great to see you conducting the orchestra.
So good! Boy, that piano part is hard! I'm amazed at Leandros's finger dexterity. I don't know how he does it and he's so relaxed. And the kids are great. Do you know what the red-haired flautist is doing today? The other day, I listened to the Bullfrog's performance with your students. We were pretty darn good. Thanks so much for the memory of those good ole days. (I don't know why I get these RUclipss through my Action Ridge account. Could you possibly change them to my private account? I don't know how. Thanks.)
Love this work! The ensemble sounds fantastic.
Beautiful, Doug❤
Wonderful to hear. I hope the students are carrying on what they learned from you, Doug.
Great arrangment Doug. It really swings.

Your use of the pentatonic scale is beautiful.
Beautiful writing Doug. James is playing wonderfully.
Decisions we make in life that may stop us.
Life begins, and continues.
Doug, you nailed it in this piece. It reminds me of Respiegi’s pines of Rome. You moved me on this composition.
Nice contrapuntal writing between violin and clarinet.
