Winter rides and thoughts about vintage mtb builds
Not so much going on in my bicycle life recently, except for little tours around town. Oh, and I have bought an old Panasonic steel mtb. Now I am thinking about what parts to put on there.

SON Ladelux dynamo headlight with USB charging - first impressions
The SON Ladelux. I have mentioned this dynamo-powered light by Schmidts Original Nabendynamo (SON) multiple times in my videos. Today I made myself a late Christmas present and bought it at Guten Biken in Munich. Of course I had to do a first test ride in the evening, where I compared the low beam and the high beam and tried out the usb charging feature. The weather was absolutely nasty and mad...
New year‘s ride - to the ruins of the Limburg Monastery in Bad Dürkheim
For Christmas and the new year, we visited our families all over Germany. Unfortunately, I got sick just in time for Christmas. When I felt better, I took out the Brompton for my favorite little trip in Bad Dürkheim, which is the route from the town to the ruins of the Limburg Abbey. After that, it took me some more days to fully recover. I visited 38C3 in Hamburg and although I had felt much b...
Obergiesing to TUM Garching - the full ride to work on my Surly Bridge Club
There was that one day with some sunny weather shortly ahead of the Holidays. So I decided to do the full trip from my apartment to my work at Garching Research Center. On the thumbnail you can see the Christmas Market at TUM in Garching. My lunch which was home-made Katsu-don (カツ丼) did only make it into the thumbnail. I miss Japan and this food always reminds me of it. Even though I use 鶏肉 ins...
Despite the grey weather - get out and ride - a tour on my Surly Bridge Club in Munich
I have to confess: I strongly dislike (to put it nicely) the grey, cold and dark weather right now. Among other things, a little ride can help to bring up the mood. Please join me for a round in Munich where I also want to discuss my Surly ("Sir-Lee") Bridge Club a bit more, including the Rohloff Speedhub losing oil and why to choose 27.5" wheels. No music this time, just me talking.
Home - a ride around where I'm from
I recently visited the area where I grew up. Of course I took my Brompton with me, because I can take it on the ICE train for free! The weather was beautiful with such stunning sun light and frost. I am struggling to get enough sun light these days, so I was definitely eager for a ride. And of course, I want to share the experience with you. I took this opportunity to try out a GoPro Hero 10. I...
Is more actually more on a bicycle? - thoughts and a bike check of my Surly Bridge Club with Rohloff
Today I want to share my touring and travel bicycle with you. When building this Surly Bridge Club I tried to tick all the boxes - while still using reasonable parts - for a very capable, robust, and pretty bike. But is this approach really fulfilling? In contrast to the "less is more" bike, this Surly Bridge Club can be seen as a "more is more" bike and I would like to discuss this idea. More ...
Brompton night ride and review of my lights, the B&M IQ-X
I love to add a spontaneous little tour to things I do by bike, like grocery shopping or bringing out trash. Even though it was quite cold that evening, I ended up being outside for an hour. This was also a nice occasion for reviewing my bike light, which is the dynamo-powered Busch & Müller IQ-X with 100 Lux of brightness. Please note that I have bought this light on my own, and I am in no aff...
On fire for a tire - combining Brompton and train for little (shopping) trips
This little adventure made me appreciate the convenience of the Brompton even more: It can be combined with the local train to get to remote places around a big city while avoiding to pay the bicycle fare for normal bicycles. I used this convenience to get some new tires for one of my other bikes. Somebody put them for sale brand-new but for half of the price, because this person had bought the...
The "Less Is More Bicycle" - an idea and a ride
Fancy or common, cheap or expensive, new or old - doesn't matter. Most important is that you enjoy your bike. But still, I feel like sometimes less is more. What do you think? And in the end I want to say that probably I got really lucky, catching a unique custom vintage bike like this, that was put together in such a lovely way. But it had been online for quite some time... By the way, I just ...
My daily commute on a Brompton - fog edition
I split my work way between local train and bike. This gives me the possibility to have some exercise and fresh air. At the same time I can avoid the mostly crammed subway. A bonus is the beauty of the area I am passing on my Brompton. That's why today I want to share some impressions of it on a foggy day in October. Sorry for the voice-over quality that sounds like I am talking through a can t...
Here in Seattle we've had the good fortune of an unusual stretch of sun, starting almost exactly the day that I got my new bike. It's cold but so long as its dry, I don't mind. Now it's finally taking a turn right before I can get fenders, and I'll be cleaning off more mud in no time. But you've inspired me, once those are set up I will venture over to a nice local coffee roastery that I haven't been to in a long time. It's up a real devil of a hill so if nobody hears from me know that I died on a worthy quest for great coffee. Great vid, have fun with the "new" Panasonic!
Thank you! That sounds like your new bike was meant to be ridden immediately 🤩 One day I want to visit Seattle and Washington state
@@cycgeist Ours isn't exactly world class cycling infrastructure and the hills are a real bitch, but if you know where to go, it's quite a beautiful place.
If you go to a garden supply you can buy a pressure sprayer with hand pump and use it with water to wash the bike after a ride
Good idea, thank you!
btw, small world, I'm also from Munich 🙂
I'm currently working on a winter mountain bike, I just need to get a few missing parts and then weld everything together
Nice, can you stay patient while getting the parts? One half of me wants to finish the build immediately and order everything new, while the other wants to wait and buy nice used parts time after time
@@cycgeist I always work on a few things at the same time, if there is a delay in one project I just working on another 🙂
If the Panasonic is slightly small then its perfect for a drop bar and should give you good reach and position. Looking forward to seeing what you decide.
January has been a write-off for me due to poor health but, fingers crossed, I will be back on my bicycle soon. I have to say you are much braver than me when you ride around in the snow with no gloves on your hands, I would freeze 🥶😂. The little kingfisher is a beautiful bird, I’m glad it’s protected in Germany. And, as for dogs, who doesn’t like a dackel?🙂 I’m looking forward to seeing your Panasonic bicycle come together. Good luck! Cheers 👍🏼
@Mick_Holland Thank you so much! Get well soon. 🚲
The bird is know as a Kingfisher here in the UK. Also very nice to see a Brooks saddle getting used 😀
@andrewmorris6411 Brooks, Barbour, Brompton - big fan of UK things here
Good to know, thank you! Martin sounds like the bird has a surname 😃
@cycgeist And also has a job! Pescador = Fisherman
I've a 1989 Wheeler , it's a 3590 nodel with a18" frame. They were very common in Germany during the 90s. I think they have very good frames. Give us more highlights on your project. I have also old frames for my new dreams.
Cool! Wheeler 3590 looks like rock-solid steel frame and flashy paint job. I also love my wheeler frame. Hopefully it will last me a long time.
Thanks for this video, really enjoyed it.
We've had 2 much ice and snow for me to ride lately but I will be back out soon on my "less is more" bike, the Raleigh "Blue Battleship"!
Nice! So I guess this battleship is no icebreaker.
I like your new Panasonic. My first recreation and touring bike was a Panasonic.
Very nice! Was ist an MC (mountain cat) as well? The frame looks heavy but well made and robust. The paint job is incredible and reminds me of some of the flashy NJS track bikes.
The bird you showed looked like what is called a Kingfisher in the US. Great view!
Thank you! I looked at the sausage dog and suddenly I saw a little green-orange flash flying along the riverside
depends if that derailleur has indexing for lever shifter I guess
I will try around a bit and update you here. Still got so much to learn about bicycles
you “I really like dogs” me [unsubscribe]
I'm not a big fan of dogs as well, it depends on how you prepare them...
I never said I like dogs in general (3:39). And in the end, the channel is about bicycles and cycling, not dogs.
I live in Michigan, USA and the daily high is -6 C in mid January. With ice on some of the roads, I don't feel comfortable riding my bike yet. If I can convince myself to buy studed tires, then I will resume biking. In general, I bike when the temperature goes above 5 C.
Wow, that sounds cold. Totally relatable, that you pause in these conditions. Don't you miss cycling at times? I was also thinking about getting tires with studs, but nowadays snow is so rare in Germany.
My Brompton has also a dynamo, love it.
So convenient! And no need to keep track of the charge of battery powered lights
thats crazy bright! was it hard to setup/wire?
It was easy to setup, wiring did also not take much time. However, the coaxial connector had to be soldered on. Maybe some people can do this on their own. There even is a nice video by SON about that. But I do not have the equipment myself (yet 😁).
€479?? Wow! Quite the investment eh. The high beam looks awesomely bright. Thanks for the quick preview.
Thank you, glad to hear the brightness was noticeable. I found it hard to capture on camera how bright it really is. And yes, I had to long deeply into my not so deep pockets. But things like this are my passion and I rode around with a big smile.
Sunshine and no wind ... it doesn't get much better for cycling at this time of year. What a beautiful place to visit on such a great day. And downhill all the way home. 🙂 I see you still have the Brooks Cambium saddle on it, I guess you must be used to it now. I couldn't adapt to it so put a leather Brooks on it which was gathering dust in my shed - I can't remember which model but it made a world of difference! Thanks for posting this video and (a little late) Happy New Year. Cheers👍🏼
Thank you for your message! It was so nice to finally get out after being sick. ☀️ Indeed, I am still using the C17. I got kind of used to it and experimented a bit with its positioning. It is okay, for the time being. I would love to have a leather brooks or even a Gilles Berthoud but have just not prioritized this upgrade recently. I also had moments where I was thinking of stealing the old Brooks saddle from my less is more bike for the Brompton, but no. 😁 Nice to hear that your dusty Brooks leather saddle has been given a new purpose! Cheers 🚲
Great video. It’ll take a while get to 5000 subscribers, but if you continue making content like this you should at least get into four figures.
Thank you!! Haha, I thought it is good to set some ambitious goals.
I had planned to ride my Brompton, but like you was sick.
I hope you have recovered, too. No point in riding bikes when sick.
Servus! Glad you're feeling better. I went snowboarding in Tirol just before Weihnachts, but spent the holidays at home. I did a couple of chilly bike rides during the holidays, and I'm building another 26" all-rounder for more rides soon. It's been so gray and cold here in die Oberpfalz, so I'm jealous of your sunny day ride.
Servus and thanks. Snowboarding sounds awesome! I also want to finally learn snowboarding or skiing after moving to Bavaria from the flat north of Germany. I wish you a lot of fun with your 26" allrounder! Working on a bike build sounds also like a very good thing to do during this time of the year. If my workshop was inside, I would probably also be working on my Surly's too short brake hose and Rohloff shifter cables. And maybe installing a SON Ladelux. Happy new year and hopefully nice sunny days in the Oberpfalz soon!
Hi,I live in the north of Italy, near the Po river, and I believe I share a couple of hobbies with you.I ride my bikes almost every day,I might stay at home if it's raining hard may be one day, but the next I go out.I also have a Brompton(135.000 km) and a Tout Terrain Silkroad with Rolhoff(78.000 km)and a very little oil leakage when new which was solved in five minutes by the nearest dealer(very few in Italy). I enjoy your videos, and today I rivisited these tracks along the Isar as I bought my Silkroad in Munich. So enjoy your passion in the open air and happy new year Luca
Hi Luca, thanks for your comment! Wow, both bikes have a lot of kilometers on them, very impressive. I think the Silkroad is a very solid and capable bike. How did you like Munich? Not the best weather but nice to hear that you rode anyways. I took my less is more bike to the Isar two days ago and everything was icy and very slippery. But I rode my bike slowly and carefully, so it was still fun. Let me know if you come to Munich again, maybe we can have a little espresso ride
@ I loved Munich very much;when I rode my Silkroad back to Italy,Ferrara is the town where I live,it was late April but I still found some snow in Austria towards the Brenner pass,so I know what you mean.I have not specific plans at the moment, but also if you come south it would be nice to meet you:only a ...little problem:I 've seen you ride very fast and I don't know if I could catch up with you, being,I have a feeling, roughly 😁three times your age(74).Anyway, let's keep in touch if you like, bye
Thanks for sharing! Nice content as always. Take care!
Thank you, you too! 🚲
¡Feliz Año Nuevo! Espero que tengas mucha salud en 2025.
¡Muchas gracias! 😃
I'm amazed how you keep your nice trousers so clean from the chain! I recently rode an A-Line Brompton but the C line 6-speed like yours is far nicer, much comfier/better for hills. I just need to convince myself to spend my money :) Thanks for sharing another peaceful video, Happy New Year to you hope and hope you had a Frohe Weihnachten!
Thank you so much! There are some stains caused by the chain from time to time. This is when „Dr. Beckmanns Fleckenteufel“ comes to the rescue. 😂 For me it also took some time to convince myself of a Brompton and get the money together. Once I had saved up the money, it was a must-have for me. Because I can take it anywhere with me to ride and explore! The only question remaining at that point was the color. 😄
Awesome vid!
Thank you! 😃
🎉🎉🎉 HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! So happy to see the Brompton out and about! What a beautiful ride! I’ve been riding my Brompton everyday since I got it - through cold and rainy days and windy afternoons where I live… Looking forward to more videos and getting acquainted with your part of Bavaria!
Thank you!! 🎆🚲🫶 Bikes are meant to be ridden, aren‘t they? And some good maintenance and cleaning here and there helps
Junge! 😄 Happy that you are feeling better! ❤
Dankeschön, dir auch ein frohes neues Jahr! Ich bleibe dran. 🚲😃📹
Alda ! super gemacht - und keine falsche Bescheidenheit - auch sehr gutes Englisch gesprochen - mach weiteer so!
Nice bike. I have a Bridge Club also. I am thinking of doing a rear wheel with the Shimano 11 speed hub. Thanks for sharing your rides!
Thank you! Regarding Shimano Alfine 11, please be careful with the narrow chain line and its implications on tire width and front chain ring size on the Bridge Club frame. It might not work with the fattest tires and the wide chainstays might limit your chainring size far down given the narrow chain line. Still an interesting consideration. 🤔
@@cycgeist thank you so much for the advice! Happy New Year!
I love the bike (I am also a Surly owner). Even more than the bike, I like where you are riding. Where is that?
Thank you so much! 🫶🚲😃 That is around the Isar river in Munich, Germany. 🥨
Your Bridge Club is very good versatile bike. Going anywhere on and off road with those fat tires. You can carry your luggage for holiday cycling tours. Also you show that you do not need a car inside München/ Munich, taking your bike and subway/ train will do. Despite that Munich quite large: 20 X 20 km/ 12 X 12 miles.
About the weather: I recently moved to the Oberpfalz from Hawaii, where it's sunny almost all the time. I didn't like the constant heat and UV burning my skin. I think it's better to have some grey skies sometimes.
Good point! And it makes me appreciate these hours with some sunlight a lot. Wow, what a change of scenes that must have been, from Hawaii to Oberpfalz
Your night ride is cool. Having a train ride with your bike. Anyways safe rides always especially at night 💯
Excellent video and bike! As for podcasts, one cycling show I enjoy listening to on my rides is “The GCN Show.” The Outspoken Cyclist is also a good one. Cheers and happy holidays!
Thank you for the recommendation!
I did the ride around Lake Biwa in November 2023 200 km. and it was fantastic, would like to do it again next year.
Cherish the DRY weather! It‘s been raining non-stop up north for the last few weeks
You have got a point there. Clouded weather is still way better than persistent rain. „Not great, not terrible.“ ☁️
.... such a relaxing ride! especially on a robust bike like a surly!...YES! i would like to see this ride on your Brompton because i finally bought my 1st Brompton (C-Line Urban, Lacquer Black, Dynamo Lights, Rack, Brooks B17 Special) . . . and i'm in love!!! ...with the Brompton 😁
Haha, the whole 20km on the Brompton!? Maybe I will do it as a 1,000 subscriber special should I ever get there. 😄 But the C-Line is suitable for such rides, for sure! Yours sounds awesome, especially the B17 Special!
Beginner mistake: buying the saddle before trying it out, we‘ve all been there…
The deep concept of having a bIke like thIs is the opportunity to rde even when you are tired...Roloff helps a lot.
True, but nothing replaces a break and maybe some carbs in case your energy is all gone.
I really enjoyed this film and look forward to hearing how you get on with your Bridge Club. Very tempted to get one myself. Thanks.
Looked good with your iPhone. Thanks for sharing, nice commute. You speak English very well 😊
I am in the UK and the weather is cold, grey and generally miserable at the moment. It doesn't do my state of mind any favours but I have managed to get out for a few rides recently, and they do generally help
Go for it! Gutes Preis-Leistungsverhältnis, meiner Meinung nach. Viele andere Stahlrahmen sind soo viel teurer. Hast du dir mittlerweile eins geholt?
It's nice to know that there are others out there who ride in less than the best weather. Personally, I'm not thrilled about riding in the cold but, the alternative is to stay inside. Can't bring myself to do that. Where I'm from, Winter is a time of hybernation for most riders so, it's a nice change to meet people out on the road. Enjoyed the video.
