Eat Me Exotics
Добавлен 18 июн 2023
I run a small nepenthes nursery out of sydney Australia. This is a channel to share some amazing plants and how I grow my nepenthes. I'll be adding more videos as I have time, including greenhouse tours, how to guides and some more focused on single species or particular plants.
I'll repeat it in my of my videos but the tips and techniques I share on here are what works for me in my conditions, everyone's grow space will have their own differences meaning different things will work better for different people.
Feel free to contact me with any questions you may have or anything you'd like to see in my videos.
There's a link below to the rest of my social media if you want to see more or purchase plants. For the moment I am only selling in Australia but we will see if things change in the future.

Your nepenthes are all out in the elements, with some shade from trees. I think you’re in Sydney; do you mind if I ask what part of Sydney? I’m near Carlingford, on a ridge line and we get a lot of weather here.
Hey mate, I'm on the northern beaches. My plants have seen winds to 100km/h, torrential rain, hail and temps from 5° to 45°. They can be alot tougher then people think, especially if you pick your plants carefully. For outdoors in sydney seems hybrids with truncata, veitchii and ventricosa are very well suited and tough enough to survive the elements
Nice video. Paul - Carnivorous Plant Kingdom
What's roughly the electricity (kWh) used by the whole setup? (Daily/ monthly) If you measure it ofc
I've only recently started measuring it but so far it's about 720kw per month, the main contributors being cooling at the moment and heating in winter
Hey mate, how often do u fertilize your seedlings?
I aim for about once a month, it's all about figuring out the amounts that work for you in your set up. I'm fighting alot of moss and algae due to my levels which is a pain.
love it !
Nice setup.
Thanks mate. Took me a few years to get it all done.
👀👀👀❤️❤️❤️❤️
You probably have one of the best nepenthes collections Ive seen!! Also how can you grow them outside?
Thanks mate, but there is definitely better collections out there that I'm jealous of 🤣. As for growing outside I'm lucky where I live the conditions for most of the year are great for nepenthes. They all hate mid winter and some dislike mid summer as well though. Conditions are usually over 60% humidity and temperatures ranging from 5°c to 45°c
@Eat-Me-Exotics Yea I get that😂 would a N.Bicalcarata work outside in Florida??
I'm not too sure, I've heard bical is pretty picky but I've never tried it. Could do well though, you guys are pretty hot n humid all year round aren't you?
@@Eat-Me-Exotics yes we are hot and humid except when winter comes, we get up to 40°F
@BaRoNvOnToOtS yeah k, that's way too cold for bical. Maybe you could bring it in for winter though they do get big
What are the measurements of your greenhouse?
It's 4x2.5m and 2.5m tall in the middle. Definitely a great size for a moderate collection
I did cut 2 Basal shoots today from a Random "Hardware Store Nephentes" 🇩🇪😉🤭😂🫶🏼 i Love These plants 💯🫶🏼 Just got the "Virus" 😂😉
Hahaha sorry yo tell you but there is no cure for the virus, the only relief comes from buying more plantz
Saw little seedlings of these for sale today at the Victorian Carnivorous Plant Society annual show. A bit rich for my blood ($250) but still cool to see!
Yeah because they are so rare in cultivation still they are expensive, those are probably only the 3rd or 4th time they have been available here in Australia.
Great video! I’m here in south africa and grow mostly sarracenia, sundews and venus flytraps outside and my cephs, nepenthes and butterworts inside in a windowsill, but I ordered a greenhouse because my outside plants got destroyed by hail recently. Will it be possible to move the cephalotus, nepenthes and butterworts inside the greenhouse with the other plants or what would you recommend. I will keep the greenhouse door mostly open because we get temps up to 40 degreess celcius in summer. I am also looking to get more nepenthes and heliamphora in the future. The greenhouse isnt that big, its 2m by 1.4m.
That sounds like a great set up, you'll want to make sure the Cephs get good air circulation and some shade and they should be fine. Sarracenia need alot more light then neps and lower humidity so might be hard to combine them in the same GH
I just received a nepenthes Veitchii BE 3734, medium sized plant. I’ve noticed the peristomes are a bronze color. I really wanted a striped peristome. Every video I’ve looked up on nepenthes Veitchii BE 3734, they all have stripes. Will my plant eventually get stripes?
How big is the plant? Unfortunately there is a few clones under the BE3734 code that aren't striped so it isn't a guarantee
@ It’s a medium sized plant. I’m sending it back to the supplier because the picture of this plant on their website has stripes. I told them that’s the whole reason why I bought it. I think that’s false advertising.
@DeadlyPlants2024 I understand where your coming from, unfortunately it's hard from the suppliers side as well as 95% of photos of it show stripes and BE sells it as a striped veitchii. The only reason I know there is some gold peristome ones is some mates got them after seeing mine
@@Eat-Me-Exotics Right. I suppose in the future, if I’m thinking of buying a plant, I’ll call the supplier first to make sure the plant I want to buy is the same plant I’m looking at.
Sorry if I missed it, but what light are you using?
They are marshydro ts1000s, I use alot of them because they are dimmable so it gives you more control
Just wanted to say I bought the last N. lowii x ventricosa ‘red’ you had available a week or two back. It arrived down here in Melbourne in immaculate condition, thanks!
Fantastic to here, it's such a great hybrid
Plenty of Nepenthes are WAY tougher than people give them credit for. My ventricosa, Gaya, Lady Pauline, and veitchii were outdoors throughout winter where I am (Melbourne!) and although they stopped growing in the depths of winter they just start growing again when spring rolls around. The ventrata and suki I have did not fare anywhere near as well (they went backwards) but they did survive at least and are putting out new growth points. They are in an east-facing position sheltered from the worst of the winds, and we only get two or three very light frosts per year. I certainly think I am at the southern limit of what most commonly available non-lowland species/hybrids can survive though lol
I completely agree about that, lots of nepenthes will do just fine with outdoor conditions even if they don't love the depths of winter
Hat do you think about nepenthes edwarsiana with 17-18c nighttimeps? Is it too warm?
I've heard edwardsiana actually does quite well in intermediate conditions but I haven't tried it my self.
I can see why we pay the extra for handling on top of postage, there's so much fiddly work involved. Thanks for showing us the whole process of packing your orders. Interesting.
I always want to make sure plants arrive in the beat condition possible. It takes a while, once you add up the shipping, box and packing supplies there's only a couple of dollars ontop to cover some time.
Just curious what temperature range are you running in the fridge? Also any par measurements for the shelves? That is an absolutely amazing collection.
I'm running it at 22°c days and 12° nights, there is abit of variation between shelves though. I haven't actually measured the light levels in there TBH, but usually I aim for about 150-250 ppfd
great setup buddy. really impressed with the organising and the shelves & plants layout. Looking forward to build something similar next year 👌 gonna watch some more of your vids to inspire. Question: how do you cool down the whole thing, also heat it up (if necesary in AU lol) Cheers from Romania
Cheers mate, the organisation comes from working in such a small amount of space lol. I'm actually planning to do a set up video that will go through everything I have in place for controls etc. But in short for cooling I have 2 thermostats, the first turns on an exhaust fan to draw hot air out from the Ridge space when it gets 1°c above my set temps and then the second controls an air-conditioner that will come on when it hits 2° above the set temps Definitely needs heating in winter, I just have a ceramic fan heater plugged into a thermostat to keep it at my set temps
Great video, love the shirt.
Haha cheers mate.
Do you sell seeds?
Hey mate sorry I don't sell seeds, I usually only make what I need for my own usem
Beautiful collection!!
Thank you
looking good bro!
Cheers mate
🎉❤🦉🌱
Do you need to maintain a constant Warm temperature to get them to germinate? Do you allow the temperature to drop down at night?
Sorry for the slow reply, I have them in my greenhouse so they have average intermediate temps with a night drop just like the rest of my plants. But for germination it's probably not as important
I love the new rack! You've been busy... looking great!
Haha cheers, yeah it's been a huge month. More has been done since too 😅. Still trying to fill it with nep seedlings though, I now have space for 1020 seedlings
wow wow, nice tour
Thank you! 🤗
Your greenhouse is lovely and really organized. Great job 👏 Your hanging lowii x Veitchii is stunning!
Cheers mate, lowii x veitchii has become a fantastic breeder so excited about all the hybrids I've got coming from it.
Whats the purpose of the heat mat? I dont really understand why you would need it at all if the fridge is already on a thermostat 🤔 and i dont think you would ever need it warmer than your home temperature
I like constancy, with out the heat mat some days it wouldn't get much above 15°c so it's just there to give alittle boost when needed.
@@Eat-Me-Exotics gotcha, just curious!
Congrats on hitting 1k Subscribers! :)
Thank you!! 😁
nice work mate. Looks the goods!
Oh WOW! Everything is so lush and VERY well organized!
Thanks, joys of an over crowded greenhouse is if it's not organised it gets out of control so fast 🤣
Awesome Veitchii
Cheers mate, I love veitchiis definitely up there with a favourite species
Great , always looking forward to the new videos
Cheers mate, glad your enjoying them.
Almost at 1k subscribers! Your collection is looking absolutely amazing. Sorry I haven't been able to come to the recent AUSCPS meetings, but I will probably be at the next one
Cheers. All good I only made the last one, I was away for a while anyway.
great vid,how old is the small and big one,and due to this video i have learn that the tendril looks to come out of the bottom end of the leave rather than the end,a lil bit like clipeta , do you know how some nepenthes pitchers are more "woody" what species have the most woody pitchers? I have a lowii and I heard you mentioned about how to can be ok with average temps for a while, but every summer they slowly get worse,my lowii is being kept at a day time temp of around 20 and under 10 at night is that ok or will it slowly die over a few years?
Cheers mate, ironically both my rajah are around the same age. Just shows the difference in growth rates plant to plant. As for the most woody pitchers I feel like that would be lowii from what I've seen. Those temps sounds great for lowii, how are you keeping those temps?
@@Eat-Me-Exotics so basically they are kept in this thing called a bio orb air and it sorts out the humidity and lightning but for temp I have put into there a little swamp cooler and when it’s hot I cover the thing up with a bunch of towels to keep sun light from heating it up and I put some ice blocks in it for a night drop, and also to see the temp I got a small hydro and temperature meter
Wow alot to it but sounds like a great system you have going there.
@@Eat-Me-Exotics thanks
your wife better know what comes second after her., and not to mess w/ them. lol
Congrats on the wedding and great plants
Thanks mate.
Time to put together a bigger fridge Oliver. 😊
Hahaha yeah tell me about it. Second greenhouse is higher on the list atm.
enclosures like this work great for small plants...but when you have a big collection, things start getting scary when you need to take them out when they outgrow the terrarium if you don't have the room and conditions for them !
Yep I'm fully aware, second greenhouse will go in shortly might have to lean towards highland conditions
Some fantastic plants mate , are they hard to keep?
Some of these highland species are trickier, but there is heaps of intermediate nepenthes that are alot easier to care for.
Really good vid, I am going to get my self a nice big green house and I watched this vid to learn what stuff I need to use to have it work well
Awesome, can't wait to see it all set up.
@@Eat-Me-Exotics thank you
Those were priceless informations, crucialy usefull for that picky one. thank you
Glad to hear you found it helpful, definitely not one of the easier to grow species.
i am trying to grow rajah from seeds
geez ,thats very bold
So so so so cool I love carnivorous plants
I’m using a shop light from harbor freight to grow my nepenthes. 4 feet long, 5500 lumens, 4000 kelvin. I’ve been growing my 1 Veitchii x lowii x Mira, 2 St. Gays, for a year 2 months now. Good results, coloration, couple basal growths, leaf jumps. Wondering how many inches should I hang my light over my plants? 15, 20 inches? Been using Maxsea, 270 PPM, 5mls or so in each pitcher twice a month, is that a good amount and frequency?
If your getting good results stick with what your doing, it's all a matter of figuring out what works in your conditions. The fert schedule sounds good too.
how much do you dilute the hydrogen peroxide 3% for ya seedlings? great video!
I use it as is at 3%
So awesome you can grow these outside. I suppose I could grow them outside if I lived in Florida or California
Yeah I'm very luck with where I live, though so far this spring is testing them it's been super dry and low humidity so we will see how things fair. I'm hoping the winds change in summer bring some more humidity in off the ocean
