The Black Walls of Pompeii
In this episode we make another visit to Pompeii and discuss the recent finds of a room with black walls and frescoes depicting scenes from the myths related to the Trojan war. I was in a bit of a hurry during recording so I apologize for any effects it might have had on the over all experience.
Ancient History makes illustrated short documentaries about the history of the ancient world - from the beginning of civilization to the fall of western Rome. (However, I don’t guarantee that I won’t do some excursions to the Byzantines and other intriguing aspects.)

In this episode we visit an archaeological excavation at Buttle on the Swedish island of Gotland in the Baltic Sea. Among the spectacular finds is a warrior grave with grave goods linked to the roman empire. What do these finds mean and what can they tell us about the Germanic-roman connections? For this episode I would like to direct a very special thanks to the professors, archaeologists and ...

The Buddha from Berenice

Not long ago a large marble Buddha was found in the ancient Roman-Egyptian sea port of Berenice Troglodytica, by the Red sea. This is the fascinating story on how Alexander the Great's campaign in Persia led to a meeting between Hellenism and Buddhism, and how it came to shape Buddhistic art. Hi everyone! In this quite short episode, I am making an update on the findings from Civita Giuliana in Pompeii. The Bronze Treasures in San Casciano Dei Bagni
Просмотров 2,3 тыс.Год назад
Last year (2022) archaeologists made an astonishing find in an old Etruscan spa in northern Italy - 24 larger bronze statues were found along many smaller treasures. It's good to be back. I apologize for the long delay - work has been overwhealming lately. I also apologize for not marking the location of San Casciano Dei Bagni in the video, I didn't detect that error until the video was rendere...

In this, the second episode about Tutankhamun we take a look at the archaeological history behind the find and also at some of the more peculiar details in the treasures. This second episode concludes the miniseries made to commemorate the 100-year anniversary of Tutankhamun’s discovery. (For now …) At the end of the episode there are some pictures shown in silence - it was a great idea - but I...

Today, on the 4th of November 2022, it is exactly one hundred years since Howard Carter and his team took their first steps down into the tomb of the pharaoh Tut-Ankh-Amun, in The valley of the Kings in Egypt. It is perhaps the most extraordinary find we have from ancient times all together - and definitely as far as preserved tombs go. To commemorate this I will be doing a small two-part serie...

History of the Fasces

It is great to finally be back! Sorry for the delay. It was a hard spring and a overly hot summer. In this episode I handle the story of the fascis, or fasces in plural. The iconic symbol of a bundle of rods often seen both in ancient art, and in modern emblems. I felt a bit rusty honestly, but I will be back on a better level quite soon! You clearly present a case however you might want to look at the CT scan. The sandstone figure inside is clearly weathered. The plaster and pigments can not be scientifically dated. The plaster is probably modern and the pigments ancient. I have 40 years worked with antiques many Egyptian pieces. The explanation why the figure was only presented to the public was due to the fact that the Kaiser was around till 1918 and if the figure was fraudulent the Emperor would be highly displeased.

I came here for what I thought might be a rationale and unbiased perspective, but within minutes you’re describing what can only be called a ‘love letter’ to the beauty of the piece and fragrantly ignore a huge part of the “origins will not be covered here” and skip over crucial elements to the sculpture’s story. You’ve lost credibility in my eyes - I have no opinion one way or the other about the piece’s authenticity but am increasingly frustrated by how shallow the documentaries about the controversy I come across are.

The mesoptamic triad. I love this triad. Inanna, Utu and Sin. That was the first thing I thought when I saw the rock and the symbols. How could researchers not know what they were? It is clear that it is the Mesopotamian triad and how it influenced the tribes of Ancient East. Could Innana have been the continuation of Al Uzza, the Arabian goddess Venusina? I will believe it.

nothing to do with it. The Moon God has always existed, and was a great deity in ancient Mesopotamia and spread throughout the world. The Moon is only one star, Sin is accompanied by her daughter Venus Inanna and her son the Sun Utu. The symbol of the crescent moon and Venus belongs to Innana or Al Uzza the Venusian Arabian goddess, whom the ancient Arabs venerated. Especially the Bedouins, as they only looked up at the sky. They had no rocks or gods, only Al Uzza (Venus) who symbolized destiny. The Nabataeans may have been the most loyal to her.

It is a very obvious fake for many reasons but the most damning is the damage, if the damage to the crown was genuine the nose would have been knocked off as well and was it someone who was related to Charlie Chaplin that after knocking over onto one ear preceeded to knock it over again to damge the other... The pigments is nothing, the amount of fakes with real pigment is just standard it's more suprising when they haven't gone to the effort and having parts that can be dated to the age again is not suprising at all. Many Forgery's use genuine articles, for example the eye from time to time they turn up but two is much harder.
