    In the day, we hiked the Canyon and rim-to-rim (and elsewhere) more than twenty(!) times. Here's the key lessons learned: • Do it in the spring, or do it in the fall. Usually we'd hike to "Phantom" ranch around Halloween, because it's a great time. (We know all the ghost stories by heart.) DO(!) NOT(!!) challenge "the summer heat!" • TAKE YOUR TIME. Our R2R trip stopped overnight at EVERY campground. There is just SO much to see! Ribbon Falls, the north Tonto, Plateau Point. • "Gookinaide!" In the desert, you're sweating though your skin is dry. On our first trip down, I was seized by "charlie horses" such that I didn't know if I could take the steps up into the cantina at Phantom. A more-experienced hiker immediately realized what was happening, mixed up "gook" in my water, and told me to drink it. By next morning the cramps were gone. Thereafter, I planned in order to use it in "every other" bottle of my water throughout the trip. It made A-L-L the difference. • You have never had a more delicious meal than Phantom's steak or stew. And, never a more amazing experience, just listening to people talk - from all over the planet. People who just did what you just did. People who "just did" what most people will never, ever do ... • Bring an extra suitcase for your "Phantom Ranch T-shirt" and your "I hiked the canyon rim-to-rim" SWAG. You earned it. You will treasure it. Forever. If you'd like to start out with a less-challenging hike, consider a south-rim-only hike. Go down the South Kaibab trail, which descends along a ridge-line with spectacular views. (But no water.) Then, after overnight at Phantom, hike back up the Bright Angel (Overnight at the Gardens! Sunset at Plateau Point!) It's a terrific journey on its own right, not to be missed. (Another time, you can explore the Tonto ...) The Canyon is truly a place where: "the Journey is the Reward." Having invested so much effort to be there, now take the time to "be Present there." This will not turn out to be a "bucket list" trip for you. You will be back. And, you will treasure every single time you venture here, no matter which route you take.

    Thank you for such a great video. I've done two North to South Rim to Rim hikes taking 4 days and 3 nights. In September this year I'm doing it exactly as you did with a "zero" day at Bright Angel Campground. I appreciate seeing your side trips, I did not know about the falls above Ribbon Falls! My only deviation from your plan is to have meals pre-bought for our dinners and breakfasts while at Phantom Ranch. Yes! Hikers can reserve those meals too. It adds some community to the trip and deletes some weight from your pack, so it's a Win-Win. Great job, guys.

      I never understood repeat R2R hikers until this trip, now I get it, there is a lot to experience. I know about the fantastic food at Phantom Ranch, two of our group did choose that option. Call me strange, but one of my enjoyments is making good food on the trail, I love experimenting to get the best food for the lightest weight. Didn't miss the steak dinner at all. But to each there own. Thanks for watching it was fun to make.

    Outstanding gentlemen! I enjoyed the long format, and the trip to the waterfall above Ribbon, as well as the Clear Creek Trail. You fellas are in outstanding shape. That was a lot of miles, and the majority of it in very heavy packs! I started backpacking there in 2007 and returned just about every year until my daughter and I started running R2R in 2015, mid-Aug. on our birthdays, which are 1 day apart. She was turning 16, and I'd just turned 52. We ran it 5 years in a row, and I've now run it 12 times, plus 4 Rim2Rivers (S.Kaibab to Phantom. Phantom up Bright Angel) since 2020. That was a wonderful video! ❤ Very enjoyable; you did a great job recording. I've seen several videos with riders on recumbent trikes, but you're the first I've seen on a 'bent bicycle. How difficult is it to balance? Did you all know each other before the trip? Years ago I had the experience of bike camping (that's what it was called back then); traveled from Nebraska into South Dakota twice and a short 3-day weekend ride from Omaha to Nebraska City and back. These were all over several years. I enjoyed the trips but have to admit that now at 74 years I'm content to just watch videos of others bike trips. I do still ride (an adult trike), just no long distances. Keep pedaling. Biking is not just for youngsters. 😊

    • @papabeartooth3054
      @papabeartooth3054 11 месяцев назад

      We all had connections before the trip but were all friends by the end. The recumbent is always a bit more unstable, but so much more comfortable. Adding a heavy pack made it even more so, not optimal. In the future I would not take so much and get the weight lower down to make it less impactful. Also the backpack had to be very rigid to avoid oscillations. I ended up staying it like a mast with spreader to get it to move with the bike. In the very first part where we stop on the bridge "to make adjustments" you can see it is moving all over the place. Not optimal but I made it work. Lessons were learned.

      I actually have three cameras I typically take. A Gopro, a sony ZV-1, and an Insta360 X2. It is the last one you are noticing. It removes the stick digitally so it looks like a drone shot. My hiking pole has a camera mount, so if I use it as a pole extension I can get the Insta360 X2 a long way out and get drone like footage. I have a drone but don't use it much because its pretty much banned everywhere you want to use it. A sad state of affairs in my opinion, but this is a nice work around.

    Thank you for a great insight to the trail, I'm 64 and in the UK but haven't cycle camped since before covid, we have a few weeks of decent weather before the end of summer so I'm going camping! I'll do a video too. Thanks for the inspiration guys.

    Nice to see a video with a bunch of old guys riding the trail. I'm 71 and headed out to ride it, I hope this month. Thanks for a good video.

    Looks like y'all had a great trip! I took the same route in the opposite direction - but stayed in all the same places you did - it was cool to see it the other way!

    Love the Katy Trail! You guys should have gone all the way to Machens. That's still a beautiful ride even though there is nothing at the very end. I stayed at some of the same places yall did. Did they get the bridge rebuilt between Franklin and Rochport? I had to do a slight reroute when I did it.

      Yeah, with five people logistics are more complicated. The one in our group who started from the Rock Island trail went on to the end the next day. He wanted to do the whole state. The rest of us were just glad to do what we did.

    In case anyone else was wondering, the Katy Trail crosses most of Missouri. What a great trail ride. Great job on the video! Top notch! I wish it was closer, I'd love to make this ride.

      Thanks, I actually have a Mavic Mini that I thought about bringing, it would have added a nice touch to the video. This being my first bike packing trip I chose to keep it simple. You should definitely try to make it, worth the effort.

      @@papabeartooth3054 As an avid and certified drone pilot I can say it would add another dimension to any video but it can be time consuming and even annoying to others on the ride who don't understand what it brings to the final video product.
