Arcane Journal Review - Dwarfen Mountain Holds - Warhammer The Old World
The ranking talk would make me feel the absolute need to stop playing nice fun lists, Especially a ELO system. my lists would need to be hardcore all the time, no more making sure my opponent gets to play against something fun for them too. Just hardcore meta lists all the time.
I feel like this happens in tournaments anyway, we dont have any real ranking system and people are already taking the piss. But with the ruleset currently where it is with some standout strong meta I get this could make it a bit worse. I feel the players that want to win with a strong meta will always take that to a tournament no matter if there was an organised global ranking system or not.
The largest problem in the entire game is 50% characters.
I use a ton of xpress color it takes more coats but comes out nicer.
is there a color comparason chart from citadel to vallejo?
Velvet red is my new favorite color. The browns are the gem of the range, they are more versatile than the GWs and have some nice neutral colors. Orc Skin is scorpy green as a Xpress. I dig them.
Ill give that green a go. I got quite a few the other day, alot of browns. And in Australia I cant argue with the vallejo price. They make some great stuff.
Have used the Xpress range for almost 9 months now and can with authority say not all of their colours are good coverage. You have some absolutely 10/10 colours like Copper Brown, Velvet Red, and all of their skin colours are top notch, but others like Twilght Rose and Iceberg grey are more like tints vs a proper one coat contrasts. Intense range are all great, especially the blue and black. Super secret tech I have been doing is zenethil and then using Hospitiliar Intense Black over the metallic parts which gives me back that heavy black base for the silvers/golds. Very quick to apply as a wash consistency. Black Lotus (their black contrast - non intense) has a slight blue hue to it and I now use it almost exclusively as my black wash/liner. In summary: gw paints are straight out of the box apply in most cases. Vallejo you will need a few runs on the board to learn which ones to use and how but am a total convert! Thanks for putting this up mate.
Great info there Alan!! Especially for those black colours. Ill give them a run for sure.
I have so much paint already, I have a hard time justifying new purchases.
Yeah your paint collections just get huge after awhile dont they.
Just wondering, is everything much more expensive in Oz or are GW products just a stand out example? Here in the States we pay above exchange rate for GW products too, but not as bad as you folks.
Yeah its mostly GW that charge a significant increase above the exchange rate. In saying that the Aus dollar does fluctuate quite a bit so who knows.
What was the priming video you kept mentioning?
🎉 nice honest review mate. Seems citadel are still up there 👆 everyone I thought of something, you covered it 😂
I seem to recall that "terrors from below" works really great against ogres, on my first game someone on the table next to mine crushed them with this rule
We Brits definitely invented trifle ,didn't know you had it in Oz, something else you stole from us ,like cricket !😅
Yeah we claim alot of stuff off you boys. Meat pie is a classic example.
English cricket was cremated back in 1882 😆 - Josh
😂 Ha ha ha, the real question though Josh is do you fiddle with your ingredients for the trifle and then send one of your young chefs out to claim you haven't?
Thanks again lads
Really enjoyed this :)
I think the idea of limiting core choices to 2 is counterproductive, to make lists fluffier I want to see more of each faction's most basic and most defining units. Force me to take more units of clanrats, more chaos warriors more dwarf warriors, don't limit them. Interestingly, the 0-2 core limit couples with the 1 per 1k pta restriction in the book means Skaven players would have to take 2, no more no less, units of clanrats to every game which I don't like. "Hmm should I take 2 units this game, or should I flex my creative muscles and take 2 units instead?"
Yeah I agree, 3 would be a good max for each core unit. Maybe 2 for others.
Andrew with the straight up slander! I would never, 50 is almost taking the piss but this is sick. Really hoping it doesn’t win SBOT 2 🤦♂️
I’m just really dying to get to 33% max for characters. At 2000 point games 660 points of characters or less would be awesome.
Yeah I feel like that might be a good middle ground.
Yea, yea 😂 yeea
Gw arent taking this seriously. Need a wtc style comp pack
28:00 it look like thay pla thees to be just after or before dwarfs but evrythink got accelerated
22:00 its funnty beacose i think you can buy i think evrythink or like almost evrythink for DE in citt of sigmar + i think manticore was muve around aos warcry and old word.
I think that good ideea for lile if you want more seres turnamet n. But i wold not like to be offical rulles for frendly game wehn we just play and arledy have a lot of math to do ;]
And does Andrew have a Wood Elf shield on the wall behind him?! That's almost grudge worthy...
Another episode I enjoyed, thanks chaps. Never thought I'd be in a position to enjoy listening to three aussies* talk about war-dolllies for over two hours?! *apologies if there are some non-aussies on the show, typical Brit here who cant tell the difference.
Totally bad comp score - no legacy armies.
Us Empire players fought to keep the lists closed in 6th for one reason: Van Horstman’s Speculum.
Bad change IMO, they should just reduce fhe total amount of points can spend on characters.
Maybe just making it easier for infantry to win combats and tie up charging units might help. Ignore the first “X” number of casualties for purposes of calculating combat res, or giving more bonus for outnumbering?
Just a comment on 1500 points. Make sure you go into it with the lense of the entire event finishing all 6 turns to completion. You must have end game practice to do well at those events.
Comp needs to be 33% max for all characters combined. and 25% max for any single character.
No?
This Comp incredibly increases the strength of Brets.
The massive skeleton block is just plain wrong.
It’s an 80 player event at Warhammer World. Fingers crossed it sells out :)
it definitely will.
Love that they're starting to introduce some comp. Personally I think they need to do something about skirmishers too, but it's a bit difficult without changing some core rules. Npt sure if it makes the giant goblin bricks better or worse tbh, there will be less monsters which is the thing it's best against. On the other hand their black orc warboss on wyvern is now even better.
I guess it’s something? It tones down the chaos dragon and hurts high and wood elf dragons, and mortuary cult will miss their second level 4, but can certainly get by with level 3’s and it leaves Brettonia completely untouched. I would have loved a cap on unit strength to go with this cap on character points. Also interesting that they have opened up spamming msu, hello 18 gyrocopters! Also trust GW to include some ambiguity on if the wizard restrictions applies to named characters…
Throne of Skulls scoring system typically mitigates list choice - 33% of your scores come from favourite opponent scores so it usually (although not always) means players consider their opponents enjoyment over list power. Removing the rule of three could give players a bit more freedom in building interesting lists.
I like a system for terrain where the players place it (having agreed what it is first) then it scatters 2d6 inches (a hit means it stays still). If it hits a board edge it bounces like a ball along the trajectory it would follow (so it will only double back on itself if it hits the board edge flush).
So what's the alternative to terrain maps in tournaments? Player placed terrain is easily abusable by people that know what they're doing and we don't live in magical christmas land where people always agree on an aesthetic setup.
In all the tournaments here at least it’s just TO placed
Yeah there are plenty of easy way to randomise placement of terrain pieces. Im a fan of changing stuff up. But yeah if you do it where players choose what and where to put down it could definitely be abused. Like Gommo said ive only had TOs place it down beforehand.
@@NewyDad8076 For round 1 sure TO placed is fine but after that terrain is always knocked and moved around with people packing up their armies, having lunch, etc. Not sure what these easy ways to randomise terrain placement in a tournament setting are but please enlighten us?
Do the rankings only look at physical tournaments? There is a strong argument that online tournaments both lack a consistent timeframe to play games and skew the meta as heavily slanted lists can be taken as no one needs to put any hobby time into building/painting them? (That may sound like I’m against online tournies, I’m not, as for people in circumstances like mine, they are about the only way I get to attend them now! It still doesn’t mean that I feel they should count though).
So many awesome things in this. I am concerned that a ranking system and masters causes more people that would just have fun lists to switch to more power gaming so that they can try and qualify. I really hope there can be a master system where all the races are represented, and not just the three or four strongest factions with players playing Meta lists to qualify
Common concern. However, I believe (if I understand the scoring system correctly) that you will find the sharks looking for those large 5-6 game events to get the highest scores possible for their top 3 that are used for the placing. This will mean that the local scene should largely be protected for average joe as at a 3 game 1 day event they just won't get those big multipliers.
Goblin Hewers. The answer is goblin hewers.
Now it's no longer the heat of the moment, definitely think you need some more test data before tweaking the last stand. The scenario points and +25% bonus does a lot to balance the scales. Overall it was an epic match and we both rode the highs and lows!
Glad to hear it! It's a difficult one to balance perfectly given not just the large points difference, but also the way different armies interact at those points values can vary a lot. I do have something else up my sleeve tho...
As the guy from the uk that actually did the 90 NG list, Josh has it spot on, the NG variant has lots of counter play and whilst hard to beat is very beatable. That TK list scares me though doubt it will see much play on table top due to the commitment to it. The SBOT rules have funky interactions between heralds and Challenges making it way stronger than it needs to be.
sbot rules? The herald rules aren't specific to sbot
@stonem0013 they ruled in favour of heralds taking wounds for the tk in a challenge. Its contentuous so could deal with an faq
@davetime2545 how is it contentious? There's nothing in the herald special rule or anywhere in the challenge section which would indicate they can't transfer hits
Great episode guys. Thanks for taking your time to answer the hitting the hard hitting questions.....45mins into the video so far, still trying to ketchup
Haha we know what the people want.
I really want to see an updated modern take on what empire is supposed to br doing these days. There's not a lot of content on empire thats recent
I don't think a unit of 200 teleporting state troop halberdiers is going to be all that effective to be honest.
I'm not sure if the big brick deathstar can survive against a big brick that can actually do melee damage Like if I have 20 swordmasters of hoeth, they're hitting skeletons on 2s, wounding on 2s, no armor save with their attacks at init 6. Sure you might be dragon proof but maybe normal units (that people don't take) would be able to chew through a ton of wounds and win eventually on combat res
Skele's could get up to WS 4 (+1 banner, +1 Tomb King), and you're -1 to hit if they take glittering, so you're hitting on 4s? I doubt you'd have 20 after stand-and-shoot though?
@oldworldfanatics the key to surviving stand and shoot is to have multiple units. They can only shoot one. So like say you had msu chariots for beastmen they could all rush in and only one can get shot to pieces
@oldworldfanatics also i can get the swordmasters to be ethereal some of the time but not being able to do it on the charge was a huge nerf
A 50 hard cap on unit is very likely desirable at this point. Also, GW needs to adress Travel Mystical Pathways.
That Royal list really shows the mentality that pushes me to never play online. If you bring that in the real world you have to fully assembly and paint it at least. Then after you get it all out I can look you in the eye and concede. .
Haha yeah purchasing, assembling and painting minatures for crazy ideas is alot harder than the online version for sure.
Warhammer Fantasy Regiments is the old plastic set that Gommo talks about. Possibly a bit of a stretch to call it part of a 'first wave' of plastics unless you count the 40K stuff that appeared just before and after as no other Fantasy stuff really came out in plastic at the same time. Skeleton Army was an expansion of Skeleton Horde which I think was actually a couple of years earlier, maybe 1985? There are also even earlier Citadel plastics than that I think - the 'Psychostyrene Dwarfs' might be older than Skeleton Horde though I'm not certain. They made a big thing about the Regiments set in White Dwarf and the models appear in a number of the photos in 3rd Ed Warhammer Armies (the book of lists for 3rd Ed). Made out it was the future which it turned out to be eventually, but not until some years after as almost everything at least for Fantasy was metal for a good while afterwards. The models are pretty good, especially the Dwarfs, Wood Elves and Skaven to my mind. Still got them all. For everything apart from the Wood Elves and Dark Elves there were weapon options as well as heads so you could actually get four variants. One of the weapons was part of the model though so you had to cut that off and glue the other one on if you wanted to swap.
Thinking about it the Goblin is an archer as well so no weapon option (and like most of the others not a bad figure considering, at least with the helmet). Really should have remembered this as I painted one recently for my daughter.
Interesting episode, thanks for sharing
That rat bastard said it best! 👆🏻
