Thanks Patrick appreciate that
Darang-darang. Boom-boom. Dish! Another of my favoutire bits.
Duh-durn! Duh-durn. Dish-dish shabang! Yeah. My fave bit of Topper as well.
I saw him play on the Principle Of Moments tour.I was 14.My first ever gig ! It seemed like he had a zillion Strats on stage. He looked like a Universal Rock Star and played so beautifully. He came on with In The Mood and it was stellar.Jason Bonham came on for the encore too.
RORY!!!!
Amazing guitarist!

Love David Bowie! His music will live forever!!
Absolutely he is a genius artist
I would not have guessed Bowie for the source behind Wolfe Child!
Cheers Thomas he was a big fan and of Jim Morrison who I forgot to mention
The true was that Paul Simenon spat on JJB shoe when Jean Jaques tried to trip him up by mistake, big Paul smacked JJ over a table and drinks went everywhere, the met on road on motorbikes a while later at traffic lights, JJ said, is that you Paul? He said yeah Jack, they pulled over shook hands and were great mates since
That is awesome two of the greats and no messing with Paul thanks for sharing.
Love the guy.
Their best album by a country mile, in my opinion. Alas, I never saw them live when Hugh was a strangler.
Cheers Paul
Greatest Singer of all time……

You know it Jo Jo so underrated. Cheers
Octaves for this part? 2:03
Just impro there well spotted
I remember him toughening up his shins, hitting them with a bottle
Yeah that's a good video real deal
Trouble was his mouth would engage before brain kicked in, that's why they didn't get to number 1 with golden brown. Look it up if you don't believe me.
I was sent to work with him as a photographer in Nice (South Of France) and met his Mum too! Lovely guy and lovely Mother too! Like most “bad boys” like Ozzy Osbourne, sweet people!!
Thats very cool thanks for sharing
I remember when this was released all my Stranglers mates thought they had gone mad. The funny and the great irony is this was the worst selling Stranglers album but because EMI had just bought their record company United Artists so EMI gave them all this money as they had previously sold thousands of albums but what they didn't know was what the band were going to do which was travel around Europe recording each song at the most high tech studios in Europe. Musikland in Munich was one as was John Lennons old home where the video for imagine was filmed which Ringo starr had built a studio in, I know turn, the centuries turn was recorded there, thrown away was recorded at musikland but the money spent on what was essentially a uncommercial concept album was sheer lunacy at the time. Two suspots was actually kept back from the raven sessions as it was originally going to be a single in mid 1979 but was scrapped, so they decided to reincarnate it on this album. EMI were furious and sad the next album better be successful or we're terminating your recording contract, so they recorded la folie and it didn't sell well BUT some DJs had heard Golden Brown and loved it so EMI released it as a single and it got to number 2 and the album flew up the charts as well, the irony of this outcome was that the musical score for golden brown was done by dave Greenfield during the meninblack sessions but Hugh said we can't use that put it away somewhere we might use it for something else. So come the la folie sessions JJ and Hugh were pissed off with Dave and Jet and said we're off to the pub we want you two to come up with something by the time we come back, when they came back Dave played the musical score from the meninblack sessions but had tweaked it and was the music for golden brown, hugh loved it went off wrote the lyrics in about 30 minutes came back and recorded it and basically secured the bands financiall future for the next 8 years as CBS signed them after the golden brown success. Incredible story.. The other thing is that JJ doesn't play bass on this song, the bass notes are played by Dave on the keyboard.
Awesome insight Marc thanks so much for sharing
This would have gone to number 1 in the uk charts, however due to a clerical error at the chart compiler credited a lot of sales incorrectly to regatta de blanc by the police. This was the first album they produced themselves after Martin Rushent walked out after hearing meninblack. Finally their managers recommended to JJ and Hugh to break up the band and start again under a new name with only Hugh and JJ. Of course they told them to go to hell and they would be continuing. Dai and Derek (the managers) then had a song written about them which went on the b side of duchess called fools rush out. Dai and Derek belief was that commercially the band had reached their peak and should drop dave and Jet. Hugh says now that on reflection dai and Derek were probably correct. I tend to disagree as they still produced some great material but yes commercially they never regained the sales they had from 1977-79.
Thanks for sharing Marc I wonder if the sales mix up with regatta de blanc was intentional to push the Police

The Stranglers are amongst the most original bands Britain ever produced. They are up there with the Beatles, the Kinks, et all. And Jean-Jacques, he inspired more kids to pick up a bass (moi included) than it can be counted....
Well said Giorgio one of the greatest unique innovative bands to come out of the UK without question cheers
The Viking Longship on the LP cover is at Pegwell Bay in Kent and can be visited and or viewed on google maps.
That's cool Brian will look it up
That looks like Don Van Vliet aka Captain Beefheart in the photo on his left
That chord instantly identifies the song.
Absolutely agree cheers
He kicked me in the face in 1979.
I definitely love the John McGeoch era of Siouxsie and the Banshees. He contributed very elaborate chords as well as isolated"plucky" sounds as he once said he enjoyed doing, and it all sounded fantastic. I've listened to his live performances of "Israel" and his guitar solos (just before Siouxsie sings "even though...) and I often wonder how he did it! People often talk about the major hits like "Happy House" or "Spellbound", but his work on "Fireworks" is also just as praiseworthy. I love what he contributed to SATB, which is my favorite band
Thank you William - Inspired playing
Weirdest and best Stranglers album.
Nice one Johnny
There’s a lot of bullshit here. It’s not correct in many parts.
Been a fan since a little girl, the raven being my fave album. I am most definitely a woman in black 🖤
Awesome Janice I'm with you on the Raven did a video on that as well. Cheers
Still dont get it😅
The story is a tad complex!!!! Cheers
@@Rockstardust69as it should be! 🤙
JJ Burnell is a kool guy but he was nearly beaten to death in France whilst touring on hisTriumph Bonnieville in the early '80's by 2 French thugs who knew who he was....Hugh Cornwall said he was never the same after that brutal attack....
Thanks for sharing this I'm sure he trained even harder after that happened.
@@Rockstardust69.... Probably, he got challenged a lot at gigs & always jumped in fists flying...
@@Rockstardust69 ...it was what it was even if you don't seem to like it bud...JJ is a black belt in Karate not an MMA fighter though up till, sadly, Daves death he would often fight with beer throwing idiots...i've seen it a few times bud, it was my Generation '76 Punk Rock (hate the press's name tag) Battersea was amazing, that & a Who gig made me pick up the bass many years ago but chill bud even Mike Tyson lost a couple of fights but i would'nt want to p**s him off....sadly i think thats it as JJ is the only living original band member...fantastic days but all good things must come to an end bud...
@@christopherstorrier5560 That picture of J.J. on his T140 Bonneville was instrumental in me beginning my clutch of vintage Triumphs. I heard from this gorgeous girl I met in Ealing, he has a song that uses the tickover of a Triumph as the backing bass.
@@zacetto ...yeah bud...Euroman Cometh album, JJ's first solo album, he used his Triumph Bonneville on one of the tracks, strange but good album bud....he has been a huge influence in my life, him & John Entwhistle of The Who, after seeing both bands in the mid '70's i stopped playing guitar & started playing one of those 4 string guitars called bass's they both played & never looked back....i hope all's going well for JJ...cheers
I have been a Stranglers fan since 1979 and the brave thing about the band was they didn't stick to a winning formula (which they had in 1977/78. However their sound and lyrics refleced what they were going through at the time.bThey lost a lot of fans when their sound softened but fortunately they made new fans. Feline was supposed to be a mixture of the soft southern European sound (acoustic guitars) with the harsh colder northern Europe sound. Feline is a personal favourite to this day.
Well said Marc I agree 100%
A very underrated album! But I'm biased being a Stranglers fan from 1976 onwards I am that old 😆
A true fan! cheers Ian
Yeah good one!!
I always liked the mystique of J.J. and to some degree, tried to emulate him. Being part French and not white, I had to put up with all sorts of sh1t growing up in 70’s Norrh West London. It was not long before I was listening to classic rock n’ roll, getting into scraps and developing an interest in vintage motorcycles. Many years later, I ended up at a University where on my course, was a mature student called Steve, who was raised in Guildford. He knew the group when they were called the Guildford Stranglers. I immediately asked him what J.J. was like as a person, to which he replied: “…very sure of himself, heavily into martial arts and that kind of stuff…” Steve also knew I was a biker and mentioned that his mum was once renting out a room to a person whom J.J. helped move. He distinctly remembers him turning up on a green Harley Davidson. The image of him on a black Triumph 750 Bonneville T140 motorcycle influenced me greatly and I own several vintage Triumphs to this day - including a 73’ T140 variant. As for Steve, he was also a very talented drummer and who gave him his first drum lesson? Brian John Duffy A.K.A. Jet Black!
Awesome Zac what a great story thanks for sharing.
@@Rockstardust69 Thanks for the excellent video.
@@zacetto Appreciate that cheers
Really enjoyed your post on this very, very underrated album. I love it. And yeah love it or hate it' it got them a whole new fan base in Europe. Buy the way. European Female was the first single lifted from the album, M.S.D, then Paradise. Keep up the good work, I love your views on the Stranglers.
@@garybridge-ku7bf Cheers Gary appreciate that and your knowledge
It's a funny old album Feline. Probably the last good album they made. It was diminishing returns after that The album has those European sensibilities you mention but it's also a dark album. There is a lot of sadness in the songs which I think people miss because it's a lighter sounding effort. It was also the beginning of the end of Jet making any effort with his drumming and JJ doing anything interesting on his bass. Bit of a watershed record.
Good call Duncan yes you are right there is an under current melancholy feel to it
A very acoustic and electronic album and extremely different from anything that went before Midsummer nights dream , and It’s a Small World also excellent. All Roads lead to Rome could have been Ultravox!
@@mikewest1542 So true Ultravox good call
@@duncanpoundcake I think it's Jet's best ever drumming on an LP, it is spot on. You do make some good points. Feline is superior to Sculpture and Dreamtime and in a different league to the utterly pitiful 10. After Feline we had nothing really to shout about until Norfolk Coast.
I've been a massive Stranglers fan from day one. One of the things I like about them is no two albums ever sounded the same. Very inteligent songwriters and great musicians.
Well Said thanks
I was a huge fan back in the day and had all the albums right up to Dreamtime which I didn't like much and I lost interest and drifted away from the Stranglers after that, especially once Hugh left. Nowadays I'm really just a fan of their first three albums. They have a very distinct sound and style and a raw energy I still love. Raven is Ok I guess but has a very different style and to me Men in Black is a terrible album. It feels like they lost their way and I'm not sure what they were trying to achieve. I certainly can't relate to it apart from nostalgia value. Thrown Away and Hallow to Our Men are the only half decent tracks. The rest is silly and unlistenable to me.
It's devicive in that way not everyone's cup of tea thanks for sharing
My friend he was the Raven... "Song by song" is well worth a read.
Yes, that book really helps understand how the track came to be. I used to play each album as I slowly read each chapter.
I can’t believe this was 1980. He doesn’t receive the credit he deserves for shaping that past 40 years of alternative music
100% agree he paved the way for the likes of Johnny Marr and set the bar very high.
He may once have been...JJ is super Woke nowadays.
A calmer individual for sure
@@Rockstardust69 I preferred him in his Yukio Mishima-influenced days. Nowadays, too many soy lattes...
I think his mother was French..and father English. and he born in London
No, they were both French, but they lived in England and that's where JJ was born, in the same hospital that the already dead Jimi Hendrix was taken to.
‘I’m not reading this…’
Great album, so ahead of the curve, almost techno/electro - trance-like at times. Can you believe they were only a few years on from Peaches!? The band certainly kept changing over the years!
They so did evolve and were courageous in their stylistic changes appreciate the comment.
Thank you for showcasing this incredible song and the talented genius of McGeoch! Thank you for breaking down to guitar chords and tuning
So pleased you enjoyed it! Cheers
Heads Up - It is cousin Matthew Followill on guitar for Kings of Leon not Michael ! Who have you got?
This was released in September 1979 and l was in Majorca on holiday and was worried that when l got back, all the ltd edition 3d covers would be sold out. Luckily they were not and l got one after school when l got back. Loved the album, still do and 2 years ago l bought another 3d cover on ebay and it hangs on the wall behind my TV. Great days, my first band and that feeling never leaves you, about 4 hours ago, another Stranglers dvd dropped through my letterbox.
That's awesome a true passionate fan thanks for sharing
Joe very intentionally drank himself to death down to the last minute. Bartenders wouldn't cut him off once they knew there was a problem. Whatever was going on with him wasn't very idyllic in the end. The British govt. named a subway station after him.
He did struggle and was clearly troubled with the break up of the Clash and the way the world was being run. Thanks Monica
James Honeyman-Scott Champion and Legend RIP
