Gas Turbine Project Part 4 - An Update
Hello everyone. I had hoped this film would present you with a completed combustion chamber. That hadn't happened due to recent family events, as I've explained elsewhere. So I've put together what I do have, plus a few explanations to show the progress I've made so far. I hope you enjoy it. Edit with InShot: inshotshare.app

    Great video, thank you! When you mentioned the limiting speed you said it translates to around 115000 rpm. This would be for this specific radius right? Also, in which applications might we find higher compressor ratios? You mentioned this compressor had a maximum PR of 3, and would operate around 1.6. Is this typical for a turbocharger application?

    • @carlwilson1772
      @carlwilson1772 3 месяца назад

      Yes that's right, and thank you for your comments and interest. Centrifugal compressors are usually limited to about 2.5 to 3 PR due to aerodynamic instabilities or surge that occur above this. Usually if you want more pressure you would use stages with intercooling between them.

    Hole saws don’t seem to fit into the precsion engineering side of things but they have solved a few issues for me, including cutting lightening holes in a straight edge I made from a lathe bed, it cut through the cast iron like it was butter. I suppose the rotabroach is the upgrade but you can’t get them on a Sunday nor int r range of sizes. I which they could improve the method for unscrewing them off the arbor as that can be a bit of a challenge.sometimes.

    • @carlwilson1772
      @carlwilson1772 3 месяца назад

      I agree with you. Holesaws have their place though, especially in the realms of sheet metal work. When you think about the tooth loading they are a pretty good option. You are right about the rotabroach too, but the holesaw is hugely cost effective by comparison. There is a fair bit of run out in them, but you can rough a hole to size no problem. The thing about this sheet stainless steel (and the tubes that are really just rolled then welded sheet) is it's stupidly hard due to the rolling process. The holesaws were easily good enough for making the parts for the combustion chamber, which isn't really a "precision" device. People make them with power hand drills. Thank you very much for your support and comments, both are greatly appreciated.

      Hi and thank you very much for watching my film. I got to go into the restoration hangar at East Fortune but didn't film it. There was indeed a Beaufighter in there in a state of dismemberment. I got to see one of the mainplanes which looked quite damaged and with a fair bit of corrosion. The fuselage was away in the distance and I didn't get to see it. It is all there, but I had an interesting conversation with the museum staff re the relative merits of "restoration" vs "conservation". As an engineer my instinct is to repair and rebuild to as close to as new condition as I can get. So that would be restoration. Conservation on the other hand is more a case of preserving something as it is and preventing any further deterioration. I think their plan for the Beaufighter falls firmly into the latter camp.

    Welcome back! In this film I explain why I have been absent from my workshop lately, and we visit Morayvia, my local aircraft museum. I think this is the best small air museum in the UK, not only because of the wealth of the exhibits, but the breadth of knowledge displayed by the volunteers. All of whom are ex RAF aircraft engineers or air crew. Thank you to Iain and John for their excellent contributions to this film!

      Yes indeed. Resetting the pressurised water tank air expansion chamber, to stop water hammer when turning off the hot taps.

    hi Carl, I was hoping I could trouble you for some advice. The power feed nut in my Harrison Mill has some backlash. I've watched Haxby's video on machining a new one, and am certain this is beyond my skill. I have spoken to mill hill supplies, and he doesn't think there are any spares. I was thinking of fitting a power feed like your rong fu Mill, and pinning a new leadscrew to the splined section of my old leadscrew. I could then mount a nut in the position of the old power feed unit. I'd love to hear your thoughts on this. Thanks, Richard.

      Hello Richard, sorry it's taken me a long time to reply to you. Because of all the variations in these mills, I'm finding it hard to visualise your intended scheme. Please could you email me a sketch of what intend and I will try to give what assistance I can. My email:- wilsonreactionresearch@yahoo.co.uk

      Thank you Jon! Yes we are lucky here in Moray, generally it is relatively dry and sunny. You wouldn't have thought that the past few weeks though, it has been very wet. I'm glad you enjoyed the film.

    Nice one! two in one day! I am a big fan of Napier so to see the turbine diesel was excellent, got stiched up a bitby RR by all accounts! Really enjoyed the tour! Phil

      Big fan of Napier myself. That turbine diesel was really quite something. They did get stitched up by RR. So did Whittle with Power Jets and Bristol Sidelley too. Napier Sabre was a brilliant aero engine.

    Hello everyone. Throughout the whole of the UK there are abandoned and dismantled railways, left over from the days of the so called "Beeching cuts". In this film we explore a little section of one such railway in our little corner of the UK. Along the way we find some interesting things.

    Those still worms looked very interesting Carl.

    • @carlwilson1772
      @carlwilson1772 3 месяца назад

      Hi Paul, yes they are very interesting. The Coopers and Coppersmiths were and are exacting tradesmen. The worm pipes curve as well as taper and they are made from rolled flat sheet. The outer casing "barrel" has no sealant between the wooden slats. It is purely the fit that provides the seal. I'm glad you enjoyed the film.

      @@carlwilson1772 Yes all those skills 'lost' but if they are no longer needed or relevant then they are replaced rather than lost I suppose. Even if the distillery was still in operation sooner or later the worm pipes would have been made by robots in volume production some place else (not locally) and the big barrels would have been GRP or stainless tubs. Cheers

      @@HaxbyShed They haven't been lost. They are all still used daily in the many distilleries around here. The copper is still used and necessary for the process. The Coopers still work out of the centre near the town of Duffus. The stills are all copper even today.

      Hello Phil. Thanks for your comment. It is pretty much all like that where we live. The old railway is magnificent. A section of it is run as the Strathspey Steam Railway, from Aviemore. Sadly I don't think Dallas Dhu will open again. Historic Scotland seem to have no plan for it to do so. That said they do still own and maintain the building, so it will remain in good condition to preserve the history of the place. Thanks again!

    Good to see a mix of content in your channel. The "Beeching Axe" cut deeply into the railways that were providing an amazing service to the communities they served. Nice to see the Victorian engineering has outlived those cuts.

    • @carlwilson1772
      @carlwilson1772 3 месяца назад

      You are right about the Beeching cuts. The irony is that the Inverness to Perth Junction Railway (became the Highland Railway Company) was the most direct route through to Perth. It also held the record for the longest platform at any British railway station. This was at Dunphail and was used for loading cattle. Sections of it still exist, buried in undergrowth. I'm glad you liked the slightly different content. From my standpoint it's nice to have any content on this channel! More workshop related stuff to come. Thanks again.

    As the nephew of a rear gunner on Lancasters during WW2, I have a fascination ( and respect) of older aircraft and the folk who flew and maintained them. We must preserve this heritage. Young Harry's interest is admirable.
