The Apprentice Farmer
США
Добавлен 13 апр 2016
I'm an engineer by day and a farmer, well, the rest of my waking hours. I fuse engineering principles with permaculture in order to build my farm into a resilient and sustainable enterprise.
In late 2015, I ditched my city life and started a farm in the Pacific Northwest on 10 abandoned acres where I now raise pastured broilers and layers, grass-fed sheep, goats, and (soon enough) meat rabbits and mini cattle.
By sharing my story with you, I hope to inspire you to take on farming in some shape or form just as I was myself inspired by others. I also hope that I'll be bringing to the table new perspective, and that together we will learn novel ways of sustainable farming and regenerative agriculture.

Tour of My Lambing Pen + Design Considerations
Просмотров 7 тыс.6 лет назад
I use a shared lambing pen for my ewes and their lambs rather than tiny individual lambing pens as I believe it takes a flock to raise a lamb. Sheep are social creatures by nature and prefer to stick with the flock. I provide plenty of feeder space to avoid the stress caused by competition and confrontation. I also provide access to the outside world for the lambs to start getting used to life ...
A Lamb is Born. Now What?
Просмотров 3,4 тыс.6 лет назад
In this video, I walk you through the entire lambing process from the moment the ewe goes into labor until a new lamb is delivered to this world. I show you the steps I take and the tools I use to ensure the newborn gets a strong start while still allowing the ewe ample opportunity to bond with her newborn lamb. Breakdown of Video Content: [0:10] Ewe goes into labor [1:09] The head of the lamb ...

What is the right temperature?
I bought 17 chicks this year.... 9 ended up being roosters... i had to seprate them into two flocks hens and bachelor flock.... however only one major coop wiyh nesting boxes so i have to cull all but my favorite and start the process in spring to get more hens... i get meat and eggs so i guess its a win.
We’ve been using some of same net fence from premier 1 for close to 10 years. I’ll be making some videos to show how I make my own solar fence energizers. Premier 1 is the only fence I trust, we graze our goats in mostly city environments for weed and brush control

✅✅✅✅✅
The only nasty part of this vid is how you cooked the chicken 😒 because what the hell is even that 😑
Music was amazing, appreciated the tutorial, final image looks like it went through a garbage compactor
Can this be used to rotate cattle?
The plucking music slaps
nice work for sure. Just ordered one of your Restraining cones. I think that looks like it works pretty good. Going to attach it to a solid board I think as I don't have trees. Then be able to hang it on a 4.x 4 in the ground. I just hatched 3, and ended up with 2 Roos. My current flock is not happy with them. So need to have dinner it seems. 🙂
Thank you. I wish you would have showed from the first pole and fence no ine ever shows that. Also I would have liked to know prices and how long it took you to put it up. Thank you. You are very nice
That looks exactly like my barred rock Cockrell, who is about to meet the cook pot
where you get wheels for the mobile shelters.
Amazing job
Not helpful
Amazing
Stupid background music
Any update to this video?
Dude, first time watching your video, I like the name.
Can electric netting be used to keep groundhogs and deer out of a vegetable garden ?
,.
I got too many 🐓 so, I'm going to to this. I have to, but it's not something I've ever done before. Thank you for your video. when did you cut the feet off and why?
Can I use it for a temporary horse paddock
Why not just skin the bird, all the fat is in the skin and you don't waste fuel????????? We cull almost all the roosters at the fall. We don't want to feed them going into winter, they become dog food. We will pressure can eggs and chicken drippings for the dogs for future use. We are plant-based but our dogs are carnivores.
amazing how this IS NOT A HOW TO
Hello, thank you great video. Where do you get the mobile shelters? If you built it, is there a how to? Thank you.
how big is the stock pot he is using??
Don't even know how I'm watching video but just wanted to let you know this music is dog shit x
That’s exactly what our rooster looked like! And we also made him dinner! Got tired of being attacked. Must be the breed!
Why do u not just remove entire head?
Can you suggest a reasonable priced butchering knife?
Such beautiful features for fly tying that went to waste
What is the life span of the fence?
I think I'm on 3 years so far from the same supplier with a few repairs, basically from physical damage (branches falling and such).
That mobile shelter would be 4 counties over around here with the wind we have had lately
Oh my God my husband wants to do that to a two of a roosters and I can't bring myself to do it
My whole family wants to off our rooster. Now that my teenage son is having nightmares about him, and I watched him go after my teenage daughter, not to mention trying to attack me multiple times…..I think I’m ready to have him whacked lol
Great video!!!
Great video!
We ended up with an extra rooster and purposely called him "Dinner!" Well, Dinner ended up killing Hawkeye (our other rooster)! Scratching head! I guess we're not eating "Dinner!" Lol P.s. ty for sharing this video!
Humans who can kill living animals, they are actually with cruel heart. They must go to hell.
Shut up the rooster is killed without be suffered you want to be my diner
Nah I just need to eat, and vegetarian diets cause brain dysfunction and nutritional issues in homosapiens.
Poor rooster. How could you kill him. I too have one rooster. I love him so much he's so adorable. They too have feelings and emotions like us.
Yeah, the feeling is "I'd kill and eat you if I had the upper hand!) (See Jurassic Park, chicken size dinos at work...)
I have one that keeps attacking me and my kids. I love animals but not more than my kids so he's got to go
I would have liked to seen in detail the killing because that’s what I’m trying to learn
pos/neg or just pos?
become a Vegan on my bucket list.
Kids need to learn how to fight like a lion in the woods. Roosters taste good. The feet taste good nice and fried. Is important to choose a good weighted Rooster. Be the rooster. Dont ever allow anyone to eat you in any combat sport.
I wondered about eating them, had heard they are tough…thought I might cook and shred for enchiladas or something of that sort 😊
So…update- we did cook our rooster, in a slow cooker, all night, and used the meat for enchiladas. It was delicious and not tough at all. 😀 and it is so nice to be able to go into the backyard, let the chickens out, attend to their coops, without being attacked! 👍
Love it!
Does this hurt the chicken
😭😭
At no point in this video was the chicken alive. You can't hurt a dead chicken. Killing can be done humanely but wasn't shown.
