NEVER use the black plastic strap guides on the top bar. They fail and the strap comes completely off the boat. Always go around the bar itself. I’m glad I learned this by tightening the strap a little too much and the plastic guide and strap came flying off. The guide is 1. Not solid ring around the bar and 2. PLASTIC. Who thought plastic would actually stand up to any kind of force in an accident or wind speed when it can’t handle some pressure when pulling on the cam buckle?🤦♀️
very informative and helpful. thank you
Nate, great video. You did forget to compare the hull of the Pungo to the Loon. You flipped the Loon over to show it's hull, but the hull of the Pungo was not shown. The hull on the Pungo is one of the biggest advantages when comparing recreational kayaks. The Pungo hull is designed for great stability, it is one of its features that separates it from all other recreational kayaks without sacrificing performance. I have paddled both many miles, there is no comparison in the stability of the Pungo over the Loon. I believe for recreational paddlers this is an important feature.
I had the 2 person version of this Sherpers/ALPS Mountaineering tent. Lived in this tent ⛺ for over a year 😂🎉
Very nice video very well thought out I do own a 106 angler and The loon and it's very comfortable and tracks very well
Excellent video sir! As a long time specialty retail salesperson in a previous life i can totally relate you your approach. No BS, just useful facts as well as useful opinions to help the consumer make a descision. Thanks man! Keep up the good work. If i were closer and not in Texas, I would totally check out your shop.
Thanks man, much appreciated 😊
Good job on this video it would’ve taken me a lot longer to get my Malone J holders installed
Thank you
great video. thank you!
¡Muchas gracias por subir este video! No tenia ni las mas minima idea de como hacerlo y te agradezco que lo hayas hecho. ¡Saludos!
how does these compared to the pelican argo xr ? I know its cheaper but it got a camp seat .. why doesnt more kayaks got this ?
Hi there! We currently don't carry the Pelican models, but can provide a little basic insight on the differences. The Argo is constructed via a blow mold versus the roto mold of the Pungo and Loon. This allows it to be produced faster and easier, allowing for the lower price point, but it won't be as strong as the roto mold kayaks, or have as much ability for changes in the hull design. The hull designs on the Pungo or Loon allow them to move much better in the water in addition to providing better stability. As for the seats, the Argo's seat appears to be able to come out fully which is a unique feature. That being said we haven't personally sat in one to know how it would feel on the water. We recommend stopping by a store to sit in the Pungo or the Loon seats, as they are some of the most comfortable available!
thanks@@sherpersinc
Pungo or loon?
This video was super helpful. Thank you!
Thank you. Fast and easy.
On the loon 106. What’s the heaviest person weight it can handle before moving up to 120.? Thanks
On the Loon 106, there is a usable weight capacity of 272 lbs. That's the weight available for a person, gear, and pets. The Loon 120 can hold 321 lbs. Hope this helps!
@@sherpersinc thanks for the reply. I’m interested to know the size of person for the loon 106 as the video said paddler over 200 pound go with 126 and under 200 go with 120 but no recommendations for 106. Thanks 🙏🏻
@@mjfollrd Totally understand! If you take a peek at the chart in the first link in the description, it shows the dimensions and deck height for each model. The width is the same (31") on the 106 and 126, but the deck height is actually a little bit taller on the 106. This gives a little more room for someone in the 106 versus the 120, however, you will hit that usable weight limit quicker, so you'll want to consider that.
Thanks for the great info. Any thoughts on which one is easier to fit your dog in or is rhat about the same?
Hint: If putting the Malone Downloaders on Thule load bars, you’ll possibly need to order extra long bolts from Malone as Thule load bars are thicker than vehicle manufacturer installed bars. To put the Malone rack on the bar, you’ll install the rack onto the bar without the footpad because the rack’s hinge bolt heads stick out about 1/4” towards the center. Then you’ll install the footpad and short weather strip on the underside of the load bar and fasten the footpad onto your vehicle.
Dude, you are literally a life saver (and kayak saver)! I just installed a roof rack with these kayak racks 2 hours before leaving for a camping trip. We got 10 minutes down the road and it was pouring rain, I was going 20 mph on the highway with 30 mph gusts of wind coming directly at the car. It wasn’t long before the car and roof started to vibrate tremendously. We pulled over in the pouring rain and realized the kayaks had shifted and lifted off of the rack. We frantically started watching videos on RUclips and came across this video. After watching your video I am happy to report the kayaks are as solid as a rock. We are on the road again safe and sound, thanks again for the awesome tutorial!!
Thanks for a great video . Took some fear away for me . ❤
This is great, thank you😊
Thanks for this video. Saw this review and then found a loon 120 in blue for 750 with a warner carbon paddle. Boat had only been in the water a couple of times. Best buy of the year for sure. Ive put about 40 hours on the boat already and im in love with it.
would rather have one thick roto-moulded pungo than 3 thin roto+foam+roto of the oldtown
Between the Loon 126 or the Pungo 125, which one has the most vertical space for your feet. I am 6' 1", 210lbs with size 12 feet. I currently paddle a 2016 Pungo 120. I LOVE the way the boat paddles and it's a pretty good boat for my usage, but 1) The seat is not that comfy for me and 2) My feet are uncomfortably cramped vertically. So I am looking to get a bigger boat with more volume.
Thanks for reaching out! The Loon 126 offers a deck height of 17.25, while the Pungo doesn't list an official deck height. Measuring is kind of difficult because of the angle of the boats, but we tried to measure how your foot would be resting while in the boat and measured 12" for Loon 126, and 11" for the Pungo 125. If you're not a fan of the seat, the Loon seat and the Pungo seats have many similarities. We have found many who prefer the Loon seat and some that prefer the Pungo, so not sure if that will provide a massive difference for longer paddles. You may also consider a sit on top style like the Old Town Salty, Perception Tribe, Ocean Kayak Malibu, or Old Town Bigwater. The Loon or Pungo move easier in the water, but if you can't get comfortable in those it won't matter. If you are near any of our stores, we gladly welcome you to stop in and sit in any of the boats! We also offer demo days where you can paddle them for free on a local lake near our Oconomowoc store to get a true feel for the boat prior to purchasing.
@@sherpersinc Thanks for the awesome answer.. Unfortunately I am far away... Maybe you can open one up in SE Michigan?
This is a no-nonsense video. He is not embellishing anything. This video is full of information I would not have known had I not found it. Excellent review!🙂
Have a loon 120 it has a lock hatch more like the pungo
Does the Loon dashboard fit on the Pungo? has anyone tried to put it on the Pungo?
Hi Mark! The Loon Dashboard is not fitted to work with the Pungo. The hull and cockpit areas are slightly different shapes, and the Loon dashboard is shaped for the Loon specifically.
@@sherpersinc Hello again, I asked someone else (I didn't physically see it) who had both the current loon and current pungo, and they said the loon dashboard did fit when they tried it. Have you guys tried the loon dash on the pungo physically? Thanks again.
Great video, thank you for giving everyone so much important info.
Thanks
Outstanding review, Thanks.
My buckle straps always slide loose. I just resorted to ratchet straps 😂
I had to decide between a pungo 125 and loon 120 today , this video was exactly what i needed , so much information.. thank you
what did u choose?
I had the Pungo 125, good boat but the Loon 126 is far superior for guys in the 250 lb range. I camp all the time and the Pungo was a one trip and gone experience. And I'm partial to Wilderness Systems boats, I have at least a dozen assorted Pungo's and Aspires for family and friends.
Great video dude.
Really good video and 👍🏼 It was a big help Thanks!!!
🙈
I always get confused on which way u have to feed tie straps at the metal buckle part....I noticed that u didn't tie down the front and rear of the kayak where the tie downs go over the engine and the trunk of (suv)car alot of people I see locally don't do it either wondering if really necessary
You can add in the ties to the hood or the rear of the car for extra stability on longer trips. If you aren't traveling for prolonged periods of time, using just the straps on the downloaders is plenty. It is always good to check them and tighten them periodically when you stop at a gas station, etc.
@@sherpersinc do u have any videos of the Yakima jaylow kayak Carriers
@@pineapplesmash6678 We currently do not, but we plan to grow our video library in the future and will add this to the list!
Front and rear tie-downs are absolutely necessary. If you slam on your brakes, the kayak can shift forward. The other reason is wind drag. While driving, your kayak is having to cut through the wind since it sits high and the wind grabs your kayak at your cockpit causing the straps to possibly loosen. A strong gust could take your kayak off your vehicle and hit another vehicle for which you would be at fault. I use a cockpit cover made specifically for my cockpit size to reduce drag and prevent the cockpit from filling with rain water during downpours and bad storms. When a kayak fills with water while on your vehicle, it can warp the kayak, make it harder to get your kayak down because of the extra weight (8lbs. per gal.), and can possible damage your roof.
That was the best video I've seen yet well explained good close up pics on how the strap works... excellent.....I just wished u had a video on the Yakima which is a little different it doesn't have that nice place u can put strap thru at the bottom by the cross bar right after u looped under the cross bar and goes thru bottom of jbar
Why don’t you demonstrate with a higher suv with a heavier yak?
So this so that
Baffin snow monster for me 👍
I had bought a pair Baffin Derrick , omg the boots are heavy n bulky , I could barely walk , can’t imagine walking in snow with dem on , ended up selling dem on eBay,
Can you talk more about the female boots
Concise presentation well done!
How to put a 28kg 5.18m kayak on to the holders on your own? On an suv, I’m female, not having much luck online. Cos I can’t lift it like a guy can. Thanks
So simple and clear!
So simple and clear unlike the written directions that came with the racks!
Nobody gives a fuck
Very clear instructions without a lot of extra chit chat. Short and sweet!!
Hi there. Why put a kayak aside? rather than just putting it upside down. The water will not get there and the wind will not interfere.
Pretty sure it comes down to a space saving thing & allowing a pair of J-racks to be mounted. Great for couples.
So glad to see your trick with the straps. I can’t tell you how many times I have struggled to get the straps in the clips on the hook. Now I have the new and cheaper Malone j hooks for my new car and this trick is extremely helpful. TY
