What costumes say about our favorite characters, stories, and society.
How did Batman’s threads go from circus strongman to kevlar-clad brawler (with visible nipples!)? Where did "Mad Max’s" post-apocalyptic punk aesthetic come from? And why does every male action hero wear the same grey T-shirt? (Looking at you, "Fast & Furious.")
Join entertainment writer and host Gavia Baker-Whitelaw as she pulls on every thread from our favorite films, prestige streaming, and classic TV to trace the evolution of costume design, and what the artform says about our favorite characters, fictional worlds, and social norms.

What 'The Last of Us' Gets Wrong About Post-Apocalyptic Fashion | Behind the Seams
What would people *really* be wearing 20 years after a zombie apocalypse? HBO's hit "The Last of Us" goes with the classic rugged, salvaged look, but skips some more interesting ideas about what post-apocalyptic culture might look like. Also, would Joel and Ellie's clothes really fit THAT well?

The Big Problem With "Best Costume" Oscar Winners | Behind the Seams
Просмотров 4,8 тыс.Год назад
The Oscars don't always award the "best" work of the year. Often, they celebrate the biggest, showiest contenders. And that's certainly true of highly technical awards like "Best Costume Design," which leans heavily toward nominating period and fantasy pieces. But contemporary dramas and comedies also deserve costume recognition. With the 2023 Oscars right around the corner....let's go Behind t...

You have Liberal leanings. You say " cultural appropriations " WAY TOO MUCH.
IT'S WILD THAT WOMEN CHOOSE THIS OUT FIT, OR MAYBE NOT TO WILD. BUT S1E29 UHURA DRESS IS SO SHORT THAT HER WHOLE ASS IS OUT. WTH. WOMEN ALSO ATTRACT THE MALE GAZE INTNTIONALLY BUT I JUST FIND THAT SO WILD. AND I'M ONLY ON SEASON 1 BUT IVE NOTICED THAT UHURA DRESS SEEMS TO BE THE SHORTEST AND SOMETIMES THEY SLIGHTLY CHANGE LENGTHS, WHICH MAKES SENSE IF THEY HAVE MORE THAN ONE. BUT IN GENERAL I FOUND IT WAS NECESSARY FOR THE WOMEN TO WEAR COLOR MATCH PANTY SHAPED BOTTOMS CAUSE THEIR ASS CAN BE SEEN ALOT. THE PERV IN ME HAS CUAGHT THE CHEEKS SO MANY TIMES IN THIS SERIES IT'S WILD. CAUSE WE THINK OF THAT TIME AS BEING MORE MODEST WHEN IT WASN'T VERY MODEST JUST WASN'T SO OVERT
LOL THE SKIRTS IN REBOOT ALSO SEEM LONGER AND HAVE NO SEX APPEAL AND FLEW STRAIGHT OVER MY HEAD TILL THIS VIDEO
8:38 I HATE THAT SEX SELLS CAUSE YOU GAVE NICE CLIP OF BOOTY WORK
THE SKANT OR MALE MINI DRESS IS CRAZY WORK LOL IVE ONLY WORN A TOGA BUT THE OPENESS AND FREEDOM OF IT FELT PRETTY LIBIRATING, NOT THAT I PLAN TO WEAR A SKIRT BUT A NICE BREEZE FEEL GOOD JUST SAYING
THE SEX APPEAL OF 7 OF 9 WAS CRAZY, IT WAS SO OBVIOUS I HALF FELT BAD FOR IT WORKING ON ME
I LOVE THE MINI DRESS AS A MAN FOR PRETTY MUCH THE OBVIOUS REASONS AND I ENJOYED THEM EVEN MORE ONCE I FOUND OUT THEY WHERE SUGGEST BY A WOMAN AND NOT BY A MAN. TBH MY INNER PERV CATCHES EVERY TIME THAT MINI SKIRT SHOWS A LITTLE CHEEK AND THAT DROVE ME TO RESEARCH IT. THE SKIRT IN SNW ARE LONGER AND THE BLACK LEGGINGS TAKE THE LUST COMPLETELTY OUT, IT DIDN'T EVEN REGISTER THEY HAD THEM ON AT 1ST
No explorer wants acommie sucking egg head telling him what to do. And a curvy girl with an hourglass figure is always awesome to see in a star trek mini dress uniform. No muffin tops or rolls. As idiots mixed with insult comics would say, "You're giving off lizzo vibes. "
What's so complicated about them? They existed and they were awsome.
Lol and hilariously John Boyega looks just like the mask he just took off
At my job, everyone has to wear a unisex white body covering, with shorts underneath, no-collared shirts. Beards require a beard net, everyone has to wear a hair net, and safety goggles. You want to know what the women's street clothes are like? I've seen women wearing tights, I've seen women wearing fishnet body stockings, I've seen women wearing belly shirts, chokers, cat ears, matrix dusters, high heels, knee high skirts, tube tops, wigs so elaborate they look like something you'd see on Star Trek. I've seen men wear women's wigs, and pajamas , and sleeveless shirts. There's not much specification in the dress code. It's like, when you're not on the clock, you can almost wear whatever you want as long as you're not exposing genitalia or nipples. No one says anything about it ever except a couple of the older people. And these people are wearing what they choose to wear. No one is telling they can't wear or have to wear anything. Lots of ethnic backgrounds, lots of immigrants, lots of openly gay or bisexual people. It really resembles the vision of Star Trek in a lot of ways. But that's what these women choose to wear when given very minimal restrictions and requirements. They WANT to wear makeup but aren't allowed to. They WANT to paint their nails, but they aren't allowed to. They WANT to wear spiked heels with pointed toes, but they aren't allowed to. Not all of them want to do these things, but half of them do. I get the feeling some women would show up with just a few postage stamps and a dog collar if they were allowed to. And some guys would show up dressed like a japanese school girl despite being a 6 foot 5 inch tall black guy. Maybe the writers on the show understand what women are really like when you leave them to their own decision to dress and act however they like.
I like the brocade jacket or waistcoat and long coat look he sometimes has too. I think him being dressed entirely in black is "interesting" conceptually too. Though I get why it is rarely done.
Pants on the women & the skants did not exist in the same show; the pants were on the pilot.
i love station eleven’s costume design so fucking much u don’t understand
the italian wife at godfather
Fanboys are such cry babies sometimes
Goes to show that you can't apply today's "standards" to the past.
The cat suits are not necessary for star trek. It's the future, not soft core.
Remarkable how leftists always want to blame men. Women purposely tease men, they do it all the time. OH!! It's men's fault. It's the cow's fault you eat hamburgers.
The Gorn wore a pretty short skirt too.
Baloney regarding evolving sophistication of Star Trek.
So Good!
2:45 as roommates
It very much make sense to why guys don't wear skirts. We don't want to :D Why force something noone wants :D
"Queer Trek" an acquired taste. Not everyone wants to be bludgeoned by things that don't seem natural to them. I can't imagine UHURA doing a Lesbian scene because the Writers want to be current and maybe a little cute. No, NICHELLE brought too much FIRE in establishing her STARFLEET Character for her to be anything but all WOMAN. PS. One of the "Post Trek" TOS Series has Kirk's nephew on board the ENTERPRISE and so is his MALE LOVER. Yes there is even intimacy between the characters. So Established TREK just learning from the Fans. Smart.
Peris Kambatta as the Deltan navigator in Star Trek the Motion Picture, tops them all in the mini dress competition.
"washing brain" as used by empire coming from roman Empire to dominate aggresive tribal groups, better to have a good knowledge of Roman antiquity, WW1/ WW2 periods before to run in SW, if you're not you says stupidities, and don't see the link with real History !
Sturm truppen are from WW1 ! NO nazis in 1914 1918 war Pfffff...it's begin well ! : Armor problem is Thermoformed plastic manufacturing process (why ? because low manufacturing cost for the film, the comfort of wearing it is after...poor extras actors inside during movie they suffered !), the pieces are very thin and cause pain with pinching of the skin at the joints, the solution ? no more thermoformed manufacturing ! but in injected ABS, or you can leave thicknesses of material near each joint (arms and legs) and also be able to shorten (while keeping the internal bead) and adapt the ends of each piece to each bodies, thanks to this surplus of material (which is not heavier than a thermo armor) here is the solution friends, this ABS version seems not to exist yet today...I'm coming....
The original Star Trek was not "low budget". Get your facts straight.
The latest iterations of Star Trek are now fully “woke” and as such, nearly unwatchable.
I always noticed that Hannibal's beige outfit when he first meets Will seemed very out of character, but I never really thought about why. Your interpretation of it being him cosplaying Franklin to make a good impression makes so much sense and definitely adds to the whole 'person suit' idea
What an EXCELLENT video.
The "gold" uniform tunics were actually a yellow green color called chartreuse green. This color sits between yellow and green in the color wheel. However, on the show the tunics took on a golden-yellow color both under the lights used on the set and in the post-development film stock. As for what Nichelle Nichols says, it was absolutely true. In fact, a "behind the scenes" anecdote is told that she often would tug her tunic higher and bunch it up in the back as she sat in her chair. She did this to show more leg... in order to be more noticeable in the background. Several times she went a little too far and they had to do another scene take. Look at the episode "A Taste of Armageddon" for an example.
Would have been a good video until it went woke.
I was enjoying this BTS look, until it went woke after 7 minutes. Leftists spoiled another experience.
Congratulations on the dumbest comment of the year. You must be a total creep around women.
Great show i never saw yet
more suffocated understanding of sexuality.. hmmm bye bye just like ST bye bye have a nice life. bye bye vote comrade camel toe. vote today castrate you sons tomorrow
Learn English or go back to your homeland.
Star trek gone woke now .lost the real everyday flavour
You have no idea what the word "woke" means, do you? You're just another creep who likes to perv on women.
Now nothing but woke crap.
I remember when trolls had some imagination and wit. Now you’re just pathetic, swivel-eyed crackpots peeing in alleyways and shouting at the wind. Please seek professional help.
I never imagined myself one day thirsting after Mon Mothma of all characters. Not saying it's bad
I thought the ST mini looked great considering the times. Feminine, yet still professional looking for a futuristic military organization. I thought they flattered the actresses enough but still well within the bounds of good taste.
how does exposing yourself empower you? women were complaining about majel barrett's number one being too bossy
This is awesome. I love that they made these design decisions to tie the universe and franchise together. They should have taken more liberty on the solo films however
The miniskirts were just fine. They should've remained.
Those outfits empowered those women.
The mini skirt was chic and very feminine. The spinoffs made men and women androgynous. It's one of the reasons the original series is so popular.
I would have like to see counselor Troi in a TOS uniform. That would have drove Riker crazy with l#st. 😂😂
Deanba Troi (sigh) could certainly wear a frock... (phwoare)!
If skirts are set as a kilt, so what. If this type of stuff continues, the story and writing get less and less.
Do not put Hannibal and Twilight in the same sentence.
