Instead of leaving the excess web loose, roll it like you did to about one foot from the ratchet, then flatten the roll, go around the webbing that is securing the load above the ratchet(“around the tree”) and loop it under itself halfway through, and twist the flattened roll until it tightens up against the ratchet spool, then give the ratchet one or two final clicks and it will snug up tight. It actually works best if you save a click or two on the ratchet after you initially crank it down. This hands-down the best way to secure the pigtail. I’ve used this method thousands of times and it has never failed. For flatbed loads when the ratchet is exposed to the slip stream, it will not vibrate. Always put the ratchet on the drivers side. Then you can see everything in your mirror.
