#93 Tackling the Audlem lock flight on 'The Shroppie'. Then onwards to market Drayton
On our trip around the 'Four Counties' loop we come up against the rather tricky Audlem flight of locks. There is a strong bywash running down by the entrance to each lock which makes geting into the lock a little tricky. Add to that the wind and it becomes harder still. Although we enjoy a lock flight, the difficulties on this one took the edge off somewhat.

#92 Joining the 'Shroppie' from the Trent & Mersey via the UK's shortest canal - the 100 yard Wardle

Travelling along the top part of the 'Four Counties' loop - from the Trent and Mersey, through Middlewich to join the Shropshire Union Canal, stopping over at Nantwich.
#91 A cruise through Harecastle tunnel - Is the name 'Scarecastle' really justified?
Просмотров 1833 месяца назад
We're cruising north on the Trent and Mersey canal and had to go through the notorious 1.6 mile long Harecastle - or 'Scarecastle' - tunnel. We found it no more 'scary' than any other long tunnel, although with the closed doors and fans whirring away, it definitely is not a good place for anyone who's claustrophobic.
#90 Crusing the Caldon canal to Leek and back. Lovely canal but huge floating weed blocked the canal
Просмотров 2653 месяца назад
After previously checking out the Caldon Canal branch down to Froghall basin, we returned from there to Hazlehurst Junction and turned down the Leek arm. This is a very picturesque canal, with some lovely properties along the canal bank. It's still rather narrow in places, but much easier to navigate than the Froghall branch. A really enjoyable cruise
#89 Cruising the Caldon Canal to Froghall Basin. A steam trip on the Churnet Valley Railway too.

After leaving Etruria we travel on the Caldon Canal, taking the Uttoxeter arm at Hazelhurst Junction. The canal terminates at Froghall Basin, where we take a steam loco trip on the lovely Churnet Valley Railway. We really enjoyed the Caldon, although it is difficult to navigate in places - particularly after Hazelhurst Junction. Not only is it narrow, with a long 'one boat only' section, but be...
#88 Stone, Stoke and Etruria - So much Industrial Heritage. Our cruise through the Potteries
Просмотров 4303 месяца назад
I'm a massive Industrial History buff and really wanted to visit this area, and fortunately Lynda was pretty keen too. The Trent and Mersey is a lovely wide and deep canal, with lots of wonderful scenery. Stone was a delight to visit - a really nice town with excellent mooring too. The final miles into Stoke and Etruria are typical Industrial areas, but much nicer than others we've been too. Ou...

We've barely been out on the boat for months - having been doing DIY on it, followed by it being painted which took nearly two months. Then it went for an engine service and the BSS certificate but this took a couple of weeks longer than expected due to a few issues that cropped up. So good to finally get going. We're heading for Etruria at Stoke to have a look at the potteries and industrial m...

It's been a long winter where we've barely been out on the boat. I was finishing off the inside panelling and other DIY work, and then it was off for a repaint! We took it to the painters at the start of April and it wasn't until mid June that it was finished. There was a lot of prep to do as it was pretty rusty, and boat-painter Edward had to take the whole boat down to bare metal before repai...

After a very hectic few months, where we've had little time for making vlogs, we're back! BIG news on our boat, and the final work from the autumn. Hope you'll join us again for this summer's adventures.
#84 Towing a broken down boat at Atherstone locks. On the final leg home of our summer cruise

The final stage of our Leicester Ring cruise - south down the Coventry Canal, to the Ashby canal and then back to our marina at Hinckley. We've had a wondeful few weeks, and it ended al too soon. Would love to do a 3 months or more cruise as we did last summer, but with Lynda being on Grandma babysitting duties in September, we had to choose a shorter route. Maybe next summer?

Cruising from Burton on Trent to Alrewas - a really interesting trip. The Trent and Mersey canal intertwines with the Trent in places, so there are strong currents and weirs to look out for. Alrewas is a delightful village and if you're passing that way, do visit.
#80 Cruising along the massive River Trent (wow!) and then onto the narrow Trent & Mersey canal.

After the trials and tribulations of the Erewash canal, the massively wide Trent felt like an ocean cruise! Really enjoyable being on it, and following it to the junction with the Derwent and the Trent & Mersey canal. Lynda used to live in Aston upon Trent and we moored near there and walked into the lovely village - along with the excellent pub! Very nice to be out in rural Derbyshire. Some lo...
#79 Cruising the Erewash canal. A "not to be repeated" experience. Was it really that bad? You judge
Просмотров 998Год назад
We left the River Soar and after a brief distance on the Trent, we joined the Erewash canal. This 11.5 mile long canal is one of the lesser explored waterways, and one that we didn't enjoy much. Crusing up it was not a lot of fun, although to be fair, we enjoyed it much more coming back. Maybe we were unfair - and we'd love to hear your thoughts on the Erewash if you've been there, or are consi...

Hi, missing your videos, hope all is well
Hi there. Thank you 😊, and yes, all is well. We have a few more to edit and post - just been snowed under with other projects. We're having a break from filming at the moment, but will no doubt be back some time soon. 😊
Stop moaning if you don't like it don't go there. Missing locks - ask the boaters. Not be subscribing very disappointed.
The Erewash canal has lots of crappy areas along it lots of quite deprived and dicey areas. Its not well maintained because its not well used and I dont think its much dredged. The Cromford is currently under restoration if thats achieved the Erewash will become a much more used and loved canal. For those of us who live round these parts its a great cycling and walking route though. I was trying to work out where you were from youre shots. I'm suprised you didnt feature a shot of Bennerley viaduct. It's a shame the Nottingham Canal no longer exists its a largely much prettier less industrialised route with much better scenery.
We walked that section and walked into leek and got lost , a kind local gave us a lift back to the steam train station where we remembered where we parked the motorhome 😂 conveniently by the pub . Enjoy your travels
Awww glad you had a lovely cruise and meal and some easy locks tc both the oldies 🤗👍🤗👍
Hard work at times, but we always enjoy it
Love the Shroppie Fly, not had a bad meal in there yet! I live in Overwater Marina, so it’s my local.
What a lovely local! 🙂
What a lovely cruise thanks for sharing we do miss getting out but thanks to boaters we can still take in the scenery and pretend we are along with you tc now the oldies 🤗🤗👍👍🌹🌷🌺
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it
If you look at the black railings on the left at 14:30 - during the floods earlier this year, the water was level with the top rail.😳 By the way, love the tractor seats.👌
@@kevlandy Wow! That is high! I fitted the tractor seats myself. We really love them, so comfy and they make long days on the cut so much easier - my back can't cope with standing up for hours 😊
We had it bad, the road I drive to work near Aylestone flooded so high, even I bottled it in my Land Rover and turned around...😳
Well done my you have a lot of locks to take you forward now tc both thanks for sharing the oldies 🤗🤗👍👍
@@annjarvis9300 Thanks for watching. 😊
Maybe he died keeping the rival swans apart!
@@declanmurphy6427 Ha ha - maybe! 😁
You are having such an adventurous time but moving the blockage hard work for you nice hair do Linda tc both the oldies 🤗🤗
@@annjarvis9300 It's always really interesting on the canals - a lot to see. Lynda says thanks 😊
The purpose of the Leek arm is to provide a water source to the summit pound which feeds in to the far end of the arm from Rudyard lake, which was built by the canal company for that purpose. Rudyard lake in turn has a feeder into it from the River Dane.
@@gzk6nk Yes that's right, we read about Rudyard. The canal used to go right into a Wharf in Leek, now sadly built over, so will always remain a truncated canal 😕
What it cost you
@@richardlay1492 Can't remember - it's probably in the answer to other comments somewhere as Ive been asked it before. £6-700 if I remember correctly. Some companies prefer to cut into the diesel tank and clean it that way. This method worked for us, but I've since heard that many 'diesel cleaning' outfits don't do such a good job as this guy. If you're in the Midlands, ask these guys for a quote re cutting your tank out. I've chatted to them about this (they are great boat mechanics) and I'm impressed with their work www.alvecotemarina.co.uk/
That first railway bridge you came to over the lock hasn't seen a train for about 40 years! It's the former Stoke to Leekbrook Junction line, not the Churnet Valley line. The steam loco an American S160 no. 6046 which I have driven. I'm now a volunteer signalman at Consall, the station with the platform cantilevered over the cut. The Black Lion can only be accessed by canal. on foot, or by car but that's using a very long narrow lane which is a dirttrack for the last bit. They are busy at weekends but on a Tuesday night it's not worth them opening. I have done the Caldon on a narrow boat including through the tunnel to Froghall (not Frognall!) basin. It was very tight - we had to remove our TV aerial and crouch down on the back deck reaching up to the tiller to steer!
@@gzk6nk Ha ha - I got that badly wrong didn't I 🤣 I did wonder when I saw it better...
Looks like you both had a lovely time keep crusing tc from us the oldies👍👍👍👍
@@annjarvis9300 we really are enjoying ourselves 😁
That narrow section was originally Armitage tunnel but was opened up I think in the late 60s or early 70s.
@@peterrice9800 Very interesting - thank you for that. It was certainly narrow!
Good to see you both and the boat is looking grand well done enjoy your cruise thanks for sharing tc nowthe oldies 🤗👍🤗👍🌺🌷🌹

Ive just found you're channel i'm loving it only up to vlog 13, Lynda is a proper trooper, making tea , cakes, painting, cleaning, cooking, driving the boat, doing the locks, now pulling a tree out of the river. Brilliant!
Glad you're enjoying our channel. Yes, she certainly is! 🙂
Welcome back. The boat looks fantastic and Lynda and Adrian you both look very happy and relaxed. 😊🤗 Kathy

Hi we have just watched your vlog and the boat looks amazing, love the green just wondered if you had the name of the colour or the paint code as we have ours painted at end of year. Thank you
We love it too! I asked the painter and he told me that it's: "Brunswick green in 2k epifanes". Hope that helps
Thank you enjoy your summer cruising
Delilah Rose looks fab. Looking forward to following you on your travels this year . xx

We've had such a busy few months that we've struggled to get out on the boat. Elderly parents and a wonderful granddaughter do consume a lot of time. So lucky to have them though 😊

good video, you could slap a padlock through those pull-pin holes.
Definitely worth considering when moored up in some areas!
how much it cost
About £7-800 if I remember correctly
Nice job That was us lock keepers helping get that boat through, we pulled it up 6 locks
Just seen this comment - well done folks! 👍
Thanks , great video , amazing amount of water in your tank, how your engine ran is a mystery to me .
