Sycamore Deadwood

Had the opportunity a few weeks ago to go up and deadwood a large sycamore tree next to a pub. i take out some other crossing limbs too in accordance with British Standards, however, it is important to note that this is currently a contested guide. some studies show that branches growing into the crown are actually a form of natural bracing, so its dealers choice. i chose to remove them because...

Felling Training Part 2
Просмотров 2,9 тыс.5 лет назад
some more footage of the Level 3 students practice their felling cuts on bigger timber before going out onto the trees. they say it takes a minimum of ten successful fells before someone becomes competent in felling. as this was a practice run i wasn't being hard on the students to move the correct way around the "tree" and any actual full cuts will have a lot smaller hinge to simulate the tree...

I’m sorry to disappoint you this wouldn’t work in real life scenario especially when the casualty is bleeding and unconscious. The rescuer should go upper than the casualty, install two tops with cambium saver than rappel till the casualty, than klick the casualty on the rappel device, instal on the backup rope a prussic for backup, than loosen the casualties rope system in which he/she fall in, that will let the casualties weight in the rescuer rappelling device, than you just need to rappel down with the casualty. That would be my approach.

Going higher than the casualty makes things much easier, but when working on spikes on a spar, it's very possible that the top of the tree has already been taken out and there's no higher place to go anymore.

I run the same rope and prusik if you put a karabiner on the end of the orange rope you won’t have too fully unclip ur prusik all the time

It’s good to see younger generation have a genuine interest in climbing properly. For a trainee to know what a vt is is pretty good as this is normally something you learn outside of college. I know loads of climbers who don’t bother self learning after doing their course and are still climbing on standard prussik. I climb on distel hitch with a pulley which like vt is really good for tending slack one hand. Point being is if you get in trouble in a tree, the best rescue is self rescue. It’s near impossible to do on a standard prussik if you’ve done an arm in. It’s good practice to one arm rescue yourself, alternating sides. I’m an old climber so can come of a tree pretty fast when needed. Specially when you stumble upon a bees nest 😂 also good practice for self rescue 😆 good luck in the industry, looks like you’ve got interest and that’s a good start 👍
