The only problem with this clip is the title. This is effectively banter between a group of highly decorated officers. Each one of them being in that room means they've proven themselves already. This clip is all of them (including the other guys) assuming Carter was just an egghead, there for technical expertise, not combat expertise, which she quickly explains.

I love it when people put up a titel on their uploads that immedeatly tell me they didn't even listen to their own video. O'Neill wanted a warrior not a lab rat. Beeing a women had nothing to do with it. It just took him a moment to understand that Carter is both.

All of that saluting they did in the conference room was all wrong. First of all, there is no saluting indoors; the exception is if you are reporting to a superior officer in his office. You stand outside the doorway until you are called in. You stop one step in front of the officer's desk, stand at attention, render a salute and hold it until the officer returns the salute. You remain at attention until he either says "at ease" or "be seated".

Love that he found some redemption after Dr. Katie Brown (who loved him, even with all his flaws). That was such a sad, and stupid breakup. But... on the other hand, I would have liked to see Ronan and Keller together.

There was this party - and a male and female soldier were there - arguing about women in the military. The Female argued that she could do anything the male could do. The Males response was: _"OK. Lets pretend one of us is wounded. We'll pretend that you are wounded first. I'll carry you around the block like I was carrying you to an aide station. Then - we'll pretend that I'm, wounded and you carry me around the block like you were carrying me to an aide station." They didn't even try. The woman just shut up. They had these truck drivers. The tires on the trucks were really big. It took 3 men and 5 women to pick up one of these tires. Three men would get around the tire - one on each side and one in the middle - then they'd turn the tire vertically and mount it on the vehicle. Fire women could gather around the tire and pick it up - but - they couldn't fit enough of them on the tire when they tried to turn it vertically to put it on the truck. Queen Elizabeth (who just died) was a truck driver during WWII. She was also trained as a mechanic. She could do that and did. The American Army wanted to see if they could train a unit of Female Recruits to the same standards as the Male Recruits. So they started trying to do that. All the women had to be sent to a Physical Conditioning Course - where they worked on their upper body strength and any other areas where they had trouble with the Male PT Tests. They succeeded. All the women passed the Male Physical Fitness Standards - and - having become Highly Motivated, understanding the importance of what they were doing - these women were one of the top units of recruits. There was just one problem. With the addition of the Physical Conditioning Course - that only a few of the males needed - since ALL the Females needed it - it took the Females over twice as long to complete Recruit Training than the Males. That meant - that it cost the Army Twice as much to train a Female to the Standards the Males routinely passed as it did the Males. That was the end of that. The thing is - Physical (not mental) Super Girls like Samantha Carter can and do exist - but - that doesn't matter. What maters - is what can the average Female do - because what the military needs - is vast numbers of average people. For anyone who doesn't get it - as written - Samantha Carter - is a Fantasy. Essentially - she's an Amazon. Just the kind of strong, powerful woman - that men fantasize about conquering and subduing. .

Love how they make fun of this scene later.

You know, it's true what Jack said he doesn't have a problem with women, he has a problem with scientists. Jack was not sexist, maybe a little bigoted, but never did I see him as a sexist.

I thought some of the dialogue was a bit on the cringe side, not because it was sexist (I know Jack wasn't, he just hates nerds and that's well established through the entire history of the show) but because it was rather..obvious. Imho it didn't age as well compared to the rest of the show as a whole. But there was just enough to know he liked her right away. Best scifi show ever, change my mind.

Loved her dialog. It was apt and not at all cheesy. It left an impression on all what she is and she lived up to it in stellar fashion over next 10years. Carter and Oneill. What an amazing pair

I was so glad to see "Kaylee" (Jewel Staite) show up as doctor in Atlantis. This is a good scene with her and McKay. Nice.

Thank you for sharing this. I loved this scene and fell in love with Carter the first time I saw it. Perhaps she did assume Jack was against her for being female, but that is because she didn't know Jack and males in the military have quite a history of thinking females don't belong there. I was in the Army in the late 90s, early 2000s and encountered those sexist opinions often, although I could hold my own quite well.

Worst character in great show. Lol she was a prototype Mary Sue. So let's get this straight I'm assuming she is in her early 30s at the start. She's a genius physicist, computer expert, has amazing weapons and hand 2 hand combat training, can hardwire anything, etc etc. This is a Mary Sue. Characters like this have ruined television and cinematic storytelling. And has nothing to do with sexusm...male character like this would be just as annoying

Watched this as a kid. Learned when I was older, that the series was made by Canadians.

I'm not sure what the intention of the writers was for this scene but I don't necessarily think this was sexism. Carter comes in with a very prickly "I'm expecting sexism here" attitude right off the bat, which makes complete sense given the extremely macho nature of the military, which was even more pronounced 20yrs ago than it is today. However, none of the characters really give her that. They take the mick a bit and hype up the unpleasantness of gate travel but that's pretty standard for "one of the boys", and from what I've heard even more so in the military. As for Jack disliking her being a doctor that's pretty typical of practical types, as a coincidence I'm a second year theoretical astrophysics student myself and a lot of the more practical people don't like working with us because it's very common for us to get lost in the weeds of science and theory and be crap in the real world (which in these kinds of scenarios can be deadly). I'm not sure that's what they're going for here as stargate plays pretty heavily into the "genius can do anything sciency" stereotype (in reality people who do heavy mathematical subjects can pick up other technical subjects pretty quickly, as they will already know most of the maths required and they are trained to think a certain way. However, there is still an awful lot of specialised knowledge which still takes a long time to learn) but it makes sense in a real life scenario.

don't find anything sexist here, there was bickering, there was pointing out that they assumed someone going by "Sam" would be a guy, which is understandable imo because of the name origin the scene was intentionally designed in that way to establish her as a strong female character that doesn't take shit from anyone and if I remember right I read somewhere that Amanda Tapping hated that specific scene because of how Carter reacts as if all of them attacted her for being a woman and she found that scene very unfitting for the character, but I am not sure since it's been a few years

oneil wasnt sexist when he said he wants to put his own team together. the others were surprised a soldier called sam turned out to be samantha and made joke about it.. small one... i would not call that sexism. kawalski did shut up after hearing she was real deal. and the guy ext to him just found it cool she had same action doll he had so he was fan immidiatly. oneil made it clear he dislike scientists. not women. so for her to go off right aways about her sexual reproductive organs when joining a team isnt right, nor smart

They have strict protocols against banging other colleagues in all such things and this would've been grounds for immediate dismissal for both from the mission in reality

Jack and Sam interaction was just as good as Jack and Daniel or Teal'C and Jack. My favorite scenes in the series involves those two.

Now that is a strong female character! Not one of those Mary-Sue-Types that are so common these days! Sam has her problems - she doesn't deal with emotions well, she has daddy-issues - so she's far from perfect, but she also doesn't need or want special treatment (she'd probably tell you where to shove it if offered!)!
