From watching long distance season all year seemed like Shell did too many races. Catalina, Molokai Hoe, Air Tahiti race, and hawaiki nui. From a training periodization perspective it’s hard to peak and deload that many times and still be able to perform at the highest levels. Travel and diet are hard to keep consistent as well.

I’d like to nominate my 15 year old son to gain lots of knowledge and tips for racing and for just having fun on the water, especially out at sea. He had raced at this years LDNs for the first time in a w1 and enjoyed it so much that he now watches waka ama on the TV analysing everyones techniques and wants to go out on the water as much as possible to play on the waves.

Rather than performance being limited by muscle glycogen availability, another hypothesis gaining more attention is that it's hypoglycemia (low blood glucose) that leads to the reduction in performance. Indeed, decades old studies don't stack up from a mathematical perspective. Supplementing modest amounts of glucose leads to performance gains/energy expenditure far above the energy contained within the glucose supplemented. It's reasonable to assume we have evolved mechanisms to prevent the brain and liver in particular, from being starved of glucose from intentional exercise. Anyway, congrats champ!

Training methods aside, you can't beat the Tahitian stable system because their top paddlers are basically company men: working, training and competing for their company ( Pacific Energy aka. Shell, EDT, Air Tahiti, ... ) -- as well as for their nation. This semi-professional environment enables athletes to focus on honing their skills while also having financial stability. Interest in this sport is also nowhere near as high as it is in FP, where it is the national sport, with deep roots in their history -- which explains why corporate sponsors are willing to commit substantial financial, as well as human, resources. Alongside, the FP government, via the Ministries of Youth and Sports as well as Culture, also plays a role by subsidizing events, such as the Havaiki Nui race, as well as youth training programs, among other things. Finally, we need to mention the Polynesian communal mindset as a major factor to their enduring success. For example, _taho'e_ does not mean mere synchronization, but _unity_ ( 'becoming one' ) and is a big part of their culture, making them natural team players ( as well as excellent soldiers, says the FFL -- and George Lucas! 😀). In other words, Polynesian culture emphasizes collectivism and teamwork: values that translate well to the demands of competitive team canoeing. It's in their 'blood', so to speak. All these factors make it hard to replicate their system -- Shell's or otherwise -- elsewhere.

Shell's training regimen: According to "Inside Shell Va'a -- Ep.2", I believe they do weight training, followed by ~1hr in V1s as a group, early morning before work, and ~2hr in V6s in the late afternoon / early evening. Team unity ( taho'e ) is emphasized throughout. Headstrong individual contributors -- talented or not -- tend to get weeded out, which is why they currently prefer recruiting young, relatively green ( pliable ) guys and building them up. Paddlers are also offered jobs at Pacific Energy, a company owned by local entrepreneur Albert Moux, which took over Shell’s former assets in the region years ago. From dawn till dusk, it is an all-encompassing commitment, though turnover is fairly high. Generally speaking, Tahitians are known for favoring long, powerful strokes ( more 'huti', meaning more emphasis on pulling ), over shorter high-tempo strokes -- which they do as well, when needed ( Huti Pe'e ). Huti Roa is how races are won, esp. long distance, but not solely ( ex: Thon Sing's huti roa in the V1 Open Men 500m Final, in Hilo ). Moreover, Shell is renowned for their revival of the extra-deep Huti Pa'ari: far in front, and [ shockingly ] maximally far in back. This emphasis on slower long strokes, overall, happens to be ideal in building baseline aerobic muscle capacity during the training season, on top of which anaerobic capacity can later be added. I believe this to be one of the keys to their success.
