Forest Cup 3 - 2024
Hucks Ave map - just down the road from Forest Cup race 1. Sometimes fast pine forest, sometimes slow cutty grass. Lots of contour details.
Very happy with my run today, although I over-ran the second to last control and lost a minute or two - ankle is still painful.
1st place today, but 2nd overall in the cup - this was also the AOC Club Champs event... so I guess that makes me Auckland Red 4 Champ
Winsplits: obasen.orientering.se/winsplits/online/en/default.asp?page=classes&databaseId=100112
Red 4 - 4.4 km, 20 controls - Many thanks to Renee and Mike for the courses, and all our friends at NWOC for their organisation

Waiuku South map - about 60 minutes south of Auckland, on the coast, by the mouth of the mighty Waikato River. I love this map - takes practice and you need to suit up for all the cutty grass. Great views out over the river, but you can get punished by the undergrowth if you are not accurate. New section at the top of the map. It was foggy when we arrived - shame it didn't stay that way. Happy ...

Karaka Swamp/Deacon Rd map - about 90 minutes north of Auckland, on the coast. This map messed up quite a few people with it's indistinct features. Personally I liked it - lots of Lord of the Rings was filmed up this way in these forests, so in the trees you need to be accurate. Smooth run, except for spraining my ankle leaving control 3 - hobbled the rest of the course, but managed 2nd place. ...
Winter Sprints - Barry Curtis Park 2024
Просмотров 122Месяц назад
Barry Curtis Sprint was a development course planned and controlled by the CMOC juniors, and was a fun event. Some of the legs were pretty straight forward, but there were also some great legs. The first control got quite a few people, 6 messed up quite a few, and 14-15 really sorted everyone out - so many people went left and lost time. Running with a head-cold so a bit slow on the ground toda...

New Zealand Secondary School Orienteering Champs 2024 Sprint. Held in Raumati Beach about an hour north of the capital, Wellington. This was the hardest sprint I have ever done. Starting in Raumati Marine Gardens, where there wasn't a single straight line and the miniature railway made everything ten times more confusing. Add to that, lots of olive green. Then heading to Kapiti Schools. So much...

New Zealand Secondary Schools Orienteering Champs 2024 Run by Wellington Orienteering Club, the long was on the Hydrabad map in Waitārere Beach - about 80 minutes north of the capital Wellington. Wonderful coastal pine forest - loved it. Shame about the weather - pretty wet and rainy today, but still heaps of fun. This was a casual entry (after the students had run) and I ran the Orange Interme...

Rutherford College in West Auckland - always tricky, especially in the wet. Got so excited jumping the fence to 15 - except I was going to 9. I also cut too much off the corner going to 20. Over-ran 26 too.. 15th place 4.3 km, 26 controls - thanks to Monique and team Headcam orienteering

Race 3 @ Cornwall Park. Something completely different - a MicroSprint. No control descriptions, no control numbers, not even flags - just a super detailed (1:1500) map with EVERY feature individually mapped - precise control locations marked by a dot inside the control circle. Time penalties for mistakes - 60s if you miss a control and 30s if you punch the wrong control. So many trees. Super h...

Duder Regional Park is about 40 minutes east of Auckland, overlooking the Hauraki Gulf and all the islands, including Waiheke Island. A great place for a walk and an amazing place for orienteering. Great views out over the ocean, but that means massive hills... but those views.. a wonderful mid-winter afternoon, blue skies and warm. It's not the hardest orienteering technically, but the elevati...

Glendowie College in Auckland's east suburbs - smaller school, but lots of room for intricacy and mistakes.. as I found out.. Beautiful winter Saturday evening - shame about my orienteering tonight. The final day of the Kings Birthday series is an annual orienteering carnival - this year in Tasman. A map combining Takaka Primary and Golden Bay High School was a lovely finish to the weekend. Situated in Takaka - a great place to visit and relax. However, tired legs and tired brain led to a mispunch. Piles of construction materials confused me and I lost map contact when I thought I hit a de...

Kings Birthday series is an annual orienteering carnival - this year in Tasman, at the very top of the South Island - sunniest spot in New Zealand. Macleans College - in Auckland's Eastern Suburbs, Macleans is one of the largest schools in New Zealand - it certainly has some of the best views - out over the Waitemata Harbour and Rangitoto Island. A great sprint location. This race is the first of 5 in the Winter Sprint Series. A bit special because the planner added some off-road and bush for a challenge on top of the normal sprint course....

Hi nice run, will u be going to the Aus camps in Armidale
Thats the plan - a lot to organise (and need to get much fitter :) )
The terrain 3-4 looks amazing with the greenery on the ground
Yeah it was pretty random in only that small area - I was only about 50m from the beach as well
nice work
Good job. We enjoyed watching it.
Thank you 🤗
Very interesting terrain. Good video, but I'm a bit missing some sound or music in it.
re-watch it :) Just added some .. hope you like my taste
@@gmilne13I think it's much better this way. :) Thanks. I like your videos but it's a bit weird without music or sound.
Thanks, nice course! Did I see correctly that you crossed the forbidden area to control 10?🤔
@petter444petter - I did (I realised afterwards) - the two road crossings were untimed, marked and had marshalls, but by the time I ran (and the students had all finished), they had packed up and left that area.
2:38 this seems to be a pretty big drop in the video...but no contour line on the map?
I think thats a GPS error - it was a bit of a mission to get the track and the map aligned properly - we always get pretty poor reception in the forest. I think I must have been slightly North of the position indicated.
I learn a lot from your videos. Thanks!
Buenos videos. Podrias añadir la descripcion del punto que estas buscando. Para saber que buscas y como esta orientado.
Gracias - I always planned to put a narration on these videos to make them more educational - just need to do it ;)
I am very impressed with how well you navigated. I've never done a fully forested course before (I live in the desert) and am really really impressed how just using contours and a few roads/trails you nailed every control.
@thog1234 Thanks for the positive comments :) This was an orange course (I normally run harder red courses) so I think it used the easier parts of the map. This type of forest is very similar to the ones up here in Auckland so I have a fair bit of experience on these. I thought the features on this map were really clear and easy to see, which helped. I intentionally ran on the tracks as much as possible because thats what Im fastest on - from the tracks I just picked the most obvious attack points... and of course, there was a bit of luck involved as well ;)
I did not get that mistake to nr. 11. Interesting mix of terrain, sand dunes ant than mountains and pastures.
@MPOrienteering - at around 48:48 , I had hit the fence further south than I thought - from there, I was looking for the three big rock cluster, but went for the three circular ones (in front) instead of the three linear ones (to my left) - ended up too far south and overshot to 12 instead of 11. I guess I thought I was about 200m North-west of where I actually was.. I was getting quite tired at that point - not very fit ;)
What online tracking do you use because for me it doesn’t show up on livelox?
@VistaVision3 I use QuickRoute to get the GPS and map synched, then OrientView to get the map, track and video combined. No LiveLox involved.
Mary! I recognised someone in your vids at last!
Nice video. Thanks for sharing. 👍2
Thanks for liking
Too bad you mispunched. But I understand. Too many lines and controls close together.
@MPOrienteering , I was too relaxed (this race wouldn't count for points for me because I was the course setter - which makes my mispunch worse).. I think I do better with more pressure - but yeah, small school and lines everywhere. :)
Hola! Que programa y camara usas oara hacer los videos? Gracias
@gabibetancor4293 Hola, GoPro 11 mini (2k, 4:3) - Quickroute -> Orientview (Github) -> iMovie :)
@@gmilne13 Gracias por tu respuesta. Voy a ver si consigo hacer algo como tu haces, con estos programas que me comentas. gracias.
I was here!
nice work. I'm doing my first urban/school ground course in Utah next week and this was a great refresher on the different types of symbols to expect versus wilderness courses. Thanks!
@thog1234 I love a good sprint :) so good luck and enjoy it. A lot of people crossed uncrossable walls in this race (including me, but I reversed out when I noticed..) .. walls and fences all look very similar on a map, so take your time
Nice video. Thanks for sharing. sub & 👍5
@KhurshidsChannel - thanks for your kind comments :)
Hi Gavin, I teach orienteering at university. Could we discuss privately about the rights of use of part of this video please ?
Messaged you :)
Wow - what a great addition: I was unable to run myself, but feel like "I'm running with you!"
Glad you enyoyed it - couldn't have happened without all the volunteers :) so thanks to you
was #15 a miss punch or was it on the wrong path end??
...and #24 !!
@@UrbanOrienteering Yeah, both cases wrong control location - I suspect the tracks were much more overgrown than expected - you can see when I'm going to 11 (same control) that I'm looking for the track entrance and it doesn't seem to exist.
hi gavin, where's the best place to get updates on upcoming sprint series events? emailing list, facebook etc?
@connorward4665 - best places are the Club webpages - they also all have Facebook and Instagram groups, but the webpages have the calendars of events :) AOC - orienteeringauckland.org.nz/ CMOC - cmoc.co.nz/ North West - www.nwoc.org.nz/
I drew that map with OCAD 7
Could you help us understand your route choice on 2 to 3? Did they ask you to not to cross the fence? Or was it the fight that made you go around?
@thog1234 Good question :) Actually it was neither. One of the main reasons why I ran this particular course was because I wanted to film a Yellow run. I'm editing another version of it with commentary to help my Yellow runners with simple techniques - so I tried not to get too complicated during the run. However, I'm from a running background so normally I stick to tracks as often as possible because it's my strength, so possibly I would have run this anyway? The Red courses were mad and had so much running through green - glad I missed those ;)
Tough terrain to navigate. Lot's of foilage. I would be lost very soon.
You do get used to it - very typical forest for Auckland - but to be fair, I did get lost going to 6. Went to the wrong ridge and couldn't see the contours because of all the green. It was only when I saw the road that I realised I was a few hundred metres east of where I thought I was :)
@@gmilne13 Yeah, that's the thing. You cant see the contours because of the foliage. That's very hard for me as well.
So many memories...
Hopefully good memories :)
Amazing sprint map
It's a great location and the planner (Renee) really made us concentrate :) we're lucky to be able to have access
honestly looks really fun
It's a really fun forest to run in - quite open in bits and nice features - fast - full body protection is essential ;)
Nice work 💪
Thanks :)
Good video but jerky because this runs 30fps. Please better with 60fps for big screen and good eyes. Thanks!
It was filmed at 60fps, but somewhere in the encoding dropped to 30fps - need to find out where - next one :)
Found out what the problem was - iMovie issue :)
RUclips Grind never stops 💯
Never stops :)
Good video but slow video 30fps for eyes. Please better with 60fps also for camera. Thank you!
Thanks for the feedback - wasn't sure if it would make a difference - I have changed my camera to 60 fps :)
Good video! You should add some voice over.
Yes I agree a voiceover would really elevate this video!
I’ll give it a go - no one likes the sound of their own voice ;)
Very difficult to navigate with all that foliage. I would have a hard time reading the contours.
Agreed - I think you get used to it - it's quite common terrain over here - I do prefer our coastal forests though, much more like the European forests (from the videos I watch)
8/10 no hand throwing wave detected you should add some intense copyright free music in the background
Nice to see you got iMovie working
If you used our programme "Headcam Orienteering" and experienced an encoding error, we would love to receive a short description including version number (and possibly screendumps) to remove possible bugs in the software. Just send an e-mail.
Thanks - will look for the frame error and try and isolate it :)
BTW the encoder error was during iMovie encoding, but I think it links back to a frame error in the original video (but maybe its an iMovie issue?) - I'll investigate when I get home from work :)
10/10
8/10 - no cover image, zoom or map - some frame encoder error on iMovie stopped me editing it fully
@@gmilne13 videography was so good I didn’t even notice your signature edit
The Map overlay is top tier 💯
Tough run out there today! Solid effort 💪🏼
Cheers - there were certainly some hills involved :)
👏👏👏
Gavin I am loving your videos. A map i did not create!
Thanks Mark :) I'm just in the learning phase of creating maps - I like doing schools and urban areas. I updated your ALexandra Park map - all those new apartments - was fun
Nice merge of the maps
The joy of orienteering maps is the scale is always spot on and they are always north on the page - I scaled the west map then just merged them in Photoshop - fit like a glove. Wish I had managed to get the same size control circles, but nothing is prefect ;)
Great video Gavin.
Thanks :) was fun to run
A map I created in 2000... once again it has changed a wee bit
And looking at the fences all around the place, it's going to change fairly majorly again. Thanks for the original map - it was a great place to plan my courses :)
Great Orienteering Videos. We've only just found your channel! Excellent presentation with super clear map extracts and Headcam footage. What camera and software do you use? We are in the UK where Urban Orienteering is particularly popular.
Thanks for the comment :) I am using a GoPro 11 mini - small and very light - running at 1080p (not 4k) Quickroute to synch gps and map Avidemux for video editing Orientview to combine route and video (and synch splits etc) - on Github iMovie to produce the final video. There is also Headcam Orienteering v3 by Ernst Poulson, which is really good and simpler, but I like the extra control you get from Orientview.
We know Ernst. He is based in Copenhagen and is really pushing his HeadCam Orienteering Software. Thanks for the sub b.t.w. although I stopped filming a while ago! I may be tempted to start up again now the tech is better.... I was on a GoPro 4 Silver! Lots of Orienteering Headcam channels out there, but yours is definately one of the best! Cheers :)
I subscribed so I can do Scholarship
Thanks Samuel - good choice
I subscribed so he knows I listen to him....
