      I'm so Happy to hear you're enjoying it. I've gotten a lot of good feedback from people who have been trying it out. It's still in my Junior and I don't think it's ever going to come out. It has all that grit and mid-range bark that I want. I recently got around to trying the Lollar dc90 which was actually a lot of fun, but it has way more of a modern sound to it. Less mids. More bass and treble. Which is not really bad. But it's certainly not the vibe for a '58 relic.

    awesome comparison. im a single coil guy who likes that edge of breakup "post punk" sound and love p90's but as soon as i loose that clarity i am disappointed (for me it's essential for post punk angst). i guess the noise is just part of it, like j mascis says you just have to keep playing but with computers all around it is tough to manage. Fralin Blues special Tele pick ups are amazing. Punchy yet vintage sounding and yet not really bright! I don't need to roll back the tone like I have with every other telecaster bridge pick up. Just write in that sweet spot and sounds so good! FWIW.

He says about them "noiseless operation with all the clarity you'd expect from a single coil pick up" for output levels are vintage, blues, high, super high. It seems like the last few years Gibson CS was using a '58 Junior as a reference, and now I'm starting to see them in a '57 reference. Does yours have a very thick 50s neck profile? Maybe it has that cooler looking headstock where the wings and points are a little bigger looking? I'm really curious what separates a '57 from a '58. Actually Faraday Cages improve noise when the noise source is at the same side of the barrier. In that case, the Faraday Cage makes the noise worse because it forces the noise to stay in the same room with yourself instead of dispersing in free space. Which ends up amplifying it.

    • @TheSoundCoop

    If you're not using the "NAC" software to control the Nob you're not taking advantage of it well. With the software you can create multiple perfiles to ejecute differente funtions of the nob, and inside of each profile you can even assing different "modes" of the nob, for example, there are two switches, and one nob. Only moving the nob you can do something, pressing the left switche you can do another functions, pressing both swtiches and moving the nob you can do more functions, and pressing the right swtich you can execute more options. So you can multiple options with only one Nob. I've got mine this year and I'm using it to learning languages and just I love it.

    What are the pot values? Gibson 58 uses 500k vol/250K tone, the other one I'd bet uses 500k/500k plus the cap, which could be why you hear very slight differences.

    • @TheSoundCoop
      @TheSoundCoop Месяц назад

      I'll totally check this later today but I swear it's 500k all around. You definitely have me interested though. The main difference I was hearing was with the transients. And I actually think this has to do with the lightening bolt bridge on the Grit Bros vs the traditional wrap around on the Murphy Lab. When I play the Grit Bros acoustic, I can kinda hear this faint light "ping" sound from the Bridge. I think that's the difference I was hearing. But I'll definitely report back on the pots 🙌🏻

    • @JR-to8sn
      @JR-to8sn Месяц назад

      @@TheSoundCoop Okay that definitely could be the ping issue or if it's like a sitar it could be the nut. As for the tone pot, if one is 250 and the other is 500 you'll hear a slight difference on both when set the same. And another thing to not too, is that the Gibson probably has '50's wiring and the Grit Bros probably doesn't but you'll have to confirm that. That could also be the difference. And yet another thing is that you didn't set the pickup height on both to be the same. Based on what you reported the Grit Bros is further away from the strings. Anyway, my point is that there are a lot other factors that could contribute to slight differences. They DO sound pretty close though.

    • @TheSoundCoop
      @TheSoundCoop Месяц назад

      I 100% set the pickup heights EXACTLY the same. And I also matched the height of each pole to string. When I was talking about the difference in string height, that was to the body/neck pocket. So the pickup is sitting higher out of the body on the Grit than the Murphy. But everything is matched to the strings which is what matters for accuracy. So the only difference are: Two-Piece body verse one. Lightning bolt bridge versus wraparound. Both bone nuts but I suppose not sized identical. Different tuning pegs. And.... Paint/Finish. Aside from that slight difference on the transient of the note in the cleaner examples, I don't even think there's even a 5% difference in tone. But that's just my 2 cents.

    • @JR-to8sn
      @JR-to8sn Месяц назад

    I recently bought a new Gibson LP Deluxe gold top and replaced the mini humbuckers with a set of the Mojotone Quiet Coil P90’s since they are the same size as minis. I have another Deluxe with mini hums because they are awesome pickups as well. The Mojotones sound amazing to me. They are fairly quiet, but I tend to get a lot of interference or something (not sure of the cause) on a number of my guitars with humbuckers. Weird thing is the noise is mostly non-existent on my budget priced guitars. It’s only my American made Gibsons and Heritage that exhibit the noise. If anyone could tell me why I would be very appreciative. I have tested the grounding on the guitars and my electrical wiring. I have read one theory that it’s the nitro lacquer finish vs. the poly finish on the budget ones. Anyone else heard of this?

    • @TheSoundCoop

      What does the interference sound like? Any chance you have a clip where I can hear the noise? Setting aside grounding issues. LED lights can cause problems. I didn't custom order this guitar. I bought it from a dealer. It came with a bakelite pickguard for those vintage Telecaster vibes. The pickguard that's on there I cut and installed myself. I promise I won't make you put one on your guitar 😉 And I definitely won't make you wear yellow spandex.😂

      I'd really love to try this also. I keep looking locally to see if any retailers get one. But nothing yet. I can't justify the $3k+ just to run this test. Do you by chance know anybody who'd lend me a VOS Junior if I pay for the shipping??? 🤷 Regardless, this Grit Bros is fairly close to the Murphy in terms of playability. I talked to Dan who owns Grit Bros and the guitar I have is several years old. He says he's working with much better materials now and his fret dressing has improved. There was some talk of him potentially sending me a double cut guitar he recently finished. So I can compare his newer offerings to my Murphy Lab, and maybe his older build too. Hoping this ends up happening.

Testing different P90s for this guitar has really shattered my illusions of how different various P90's sound from one another. Based on my test, the tone of the stock Gibson pickup and this Mojotone '56 QC was so close, it's not even worth arguing about it. The only noticeable difference was the massive drop in noise from the Mojotone. Even with the differences in tone between the Mojotone and the Lollar, I don't think I could pick it out in a full band mix even if it was just 1 guitar part. I'm looking forward testing more pickups. But I'm almost wondering if I'm eventually gonna realize that P90s mostly just sound like P90s. Give or take 5-10%. At least that's my current intuition. I'm lucky to have a few nice instruments that I love dearly. If I had a fire I'm still grabbing the Mulecaster first. And if you're not intending it as a main standard tuning guitar. The whole down tuned Posen/Landreth thing is really fun. I had it in standard with 11s for a few years. Only recently decided I wanted something different from it. I put 13s on it and tuned down to C Standard. It's just lovely how it handles the low end. It doesn't get bassy s d out of line. The instrument has so much dynamic range, it was tending to away from me in E standard. Something about the bigger strings and lower tuning makes it feel more manageable. An amazing tonal shift for writing songs too. The guitar ends up so low, even Tenor vocals have a higher airy character to them. Really easy to get into the RnB vibe without needing to hit all those high notes. Enjoy Sir! 🙌🏻

      @@Drunken_Hamster 3:38 I play the guitar with tone pot at 10, unaffected. And I immediately follow that with the "normal tone" at 0. Immediately following that I play it again with tone pot at 10, unaffected. And I immediately follow that by playing with the mid scoop at 0. This shows off all the sounds. Your playback medium is gonna matter here. Phone speaker or inexpensive buds won't give you the full experience. The "normal tone" at 0 sounds like a typical pot, rolling off all the highs. At 0 it sounds like the guitar is underwater or dull. No treble at all. Very muffled. When the mod is set to 0, it leaves all the highs and only scoops the tone at 850Hz. The bell curve of the cut leaves plenty of treble above 3kHz. But will remove mud down to 300Hz and harsh/bright stuff up to 3kHz You can hear more of the mod at 6:44 You'll probably notice the mod at 0 sounds more like an acoustic guitar. Kinda strummy. Not as harsh or in your face. More like a Strat. Hope that helps a little. I have 2 other videos showing this Mod off in a Strat, and with distortion. So there's more examples available if you're interested.

      @@TheSoundCoop 3:49 vs 4:11 Also I'm on PC with good speakers, I just wasn't paying attention. Thanks for the video. Been off-and-on deep-diving guitar science for a few years now. Trying (however in vain it might be) to come up with "the perfect formula" for a guitar despite not even playing. It's fun to think about, especially given how many variables there are in construction, tuning, and design. One of the things I'm trying to do is eliminate un-needed complexity and potentially substitute it with other ways to achieve similar effects with differently applied complexity. For instance, one pickup instead of two or three, but allowing that pickup to be moved along a track. Keeps the signal and wiring cleaner and simpler, but still gives you the psychedelic neck sound, the cutting harmonic bridge sound, and the stable middle sound that has some interesting physics that would make this comment too long if I tried to explain.

    • @TheSoundCoop
      @TheSoundCoop 2 месяца назад

      It sounds like you're onto a fun project. Keep me posted if you get things going. A sliding track would definitely give you all the pickup position variety. I do think the vibes you get from various pickup types will be a little tough to replicate with only one pickup. But this kinda depends on how close is close enough. The one thing you'll have the hardest time getting from one guitar, IMHO. The variety of feel, and the subsequent vibe you get for different specs or combinations of specs (pickups excluded). Stratocaster is home base for me. I recently got that Junior and it feels totally different. The strat feels stiff and tight. Really snappy and dynamic. The Junior feels really loose and sloshy. I can totally make one sound somewhat similar to the other. But they'll never feel the same. The difference in the way they feel inspires me to make different musical choices. They also inspire me to write different types of songs. There's no ballads in that Junior for me but there's a million in that Strat. Meanwhile the Junior has a million rock riffs hidden inside waiting to be found. One of them is a bow & arrow, the other is a battle axe 😂 All that to say. It took me a long time to realize that pickups SOUND different. But it's the Scale Length, Fretboard Radius, Bridge Type, Tuner Orientation, Neck Angle and Headstock Angle that really change how an instrument FEELS. And how much you can manipulate it... or not.

    • @Drunken_Hamster
      @Drunken_Hamster 2 месяца назад

      @@TheSoundCoop I've delved into those topics as well. I actually saw a guy who used hand-fitted roller-everything in order to make a Bigsby tremolo that can do huge divebombs and still retain tuning stability. HeavyMetal ATC is the channel name, so check him out. He also does his own pickups and he and I have discussed pickup theory based on his testing and videos. The reason I pursue learning the way I do is because if I ever end up doing anything with it, I'd like to do it from a holistic perspective/onset to get the baseline result as good as I can, then optimize for taste/personal preference from there. Obviously without trying, I won't know what body shapes, finish feels, fretboard radii and etc would be "optimal" for me, but I can deal with generalities for that as I work on the more objective parts of the guitar and the sound and capabilities it'll produce to start with and figure out ergos once they "matter" and I have an axe in my hands.

Edit: I'm very happy that you talked about weight vs balance. To me, the clean examples definitely have something extra in the high mids. Aside from playing closer to the bridge, as mentioned in the video. It also occurred to me. I can't get the action quite as low on the Grit compared to the Murphy. The lower action on the Murphy Lab might be chocking the strings ever so slightly. Or maybe it's more accurate to say, on the Grit, the strings are ringing a touch more freely? Regardless. Just a few other thoughts. The Grit Bros is really a solid guitar for the $$$. And absolutely not a $6k difference. Thanks for watching 🙌🏻
