Maybe this is just an obvious statement, but... The more they talk, the more Ichiban can reach out to Masato. At first, he's unreachable, as the distance there is between them. Then Masato talks about the point of break in his life, allowing Ichiban to get close to him, or in this case, he reduces the distance. And finally, as Ichiban screams the truth to him, he's finally managed to get close to him, being able to save him with his words.
