Could the Pixel 8 be Your ONLY CAMERA for YouTube?
In this video, I'm testing out the Google Pixel 8's cameras to find out whether it could be your only camera for creating content for RUclips. We test out if it's good for a-roll and b-roll, if you can create good quality thumbnails with it, if it's microphones are good enough for recording voiceovers, what the experience of transferring files to your computer is like, and if the Pixel 8 could be used for livestreaming.

Garbage phone. If you love Android get a Samsung Galaxy S. Otherwise stick with Apple.
I'll stop buying Google phones when Samsung starts _asking_ me which of their shitty bloatware apps I want installed instead of _telling_ me.
Totally fair point - it is a pain when those apps come pre-installed and 99% of them most people don't use!
The focus is software based as I have the same problem on a Pixel 7 Pro
From the comments, and my experience with it, I'm sure it's hardware-based, as I can shake the phone and it then focuses fine! Strange one! Thanks for the comment.
Great review!
Thanks, David! 😁🙌
I just got 256gb for $600. Excellent phone.
4g works just as well 5g. Excellent video brother. Thanks for sharing.
Yeah, that's the same experience as I've had. Thanks for the kind words and for watching! 😁👌
Feeling like spreading a little chaos today, so gonna buy it tomorrow and watch your video after
Haha nice one - I'm sure you'll like the phone!
Probably stick eith my 6a
No need to upgrade if you're happy with the phone you've got!
Aperture Science
Nobody should buy this phone, It’s just terrible. Buy a Samsung or an Apple device instead.
Is the Obsidian color bad in terms of making the back of the phone tidy? I was thinking of getting the Hazel but my previous phone was a green Pixel 7 so I wanted to try a neutral color this time
Yes, the Obsidian colour is particularly bad for fingerprints - another commenter on the video has said the Hazel version is a lot better for hiding fingerprints!
a tip for anyone whos thinking of buying this phone, i'd reccomend going to your local tech store, like best buy or something. bust so you can test the feel and cameras etc and for my swedish fellas, you can find them in elgiganten, not sure if every elgiganten wirks, but there should be one in most places
3:56 app freeze happens to me on P 4a too! But only with Instagram
Just got my Pixel 8 yesterday. $240 CDN. Couldn't pass up the price. Enjoying it so far. Very similar to my Pixel 4a5G that its replacing which i like.
Yeah, definitely can't pass up that deal!! Glad you are enjoying it so far 🙌
Isn't this guy that one from Sussex famous for being found out for shitting in pub urinals on a semi-regular basis? The world is wild!
This is a great approach to reviewing phones beyond just specs and hype! I appreciate it! My good old Sony Xperia XZ2 compact is sadly showing its age (slowing down, charging issues), so I've been looking around for an actual compact smartphone. Spoiler alert: they don't exist anymore. I've had my eye on the upcoming Sony Xperia 10 VI, the Google Pixels (7, 7a, 8, 8a) and possibly a Samsung model, but it's hard to pull the trigger on any. I want my phones for longevity (updates, not slowing down, good battery life) but also wouldn't mind a good enough camera for every day use (which I think every model mentioned should have). I might want to use it for some smartphone gaming (think Genshin), but that'd be sporadically. Having some good specs to last 5-7 years would definitely be a bonus and worth some additional price (and I'm expecting a small appreciation bonus from work that could help towards upping my budget). But possibly most importantly: I want to be able to actually handle the phone, so big chonkers are a definite no go. I dig the camera bar at the rear of the Pixel, since it offers a good point to rest on my index finger (I went to check it physically in store yesterday). The lack of a 'back' button will be something to grow accustomed to, but that doesn't have to be a deal breaker. Given my requirements, my eye is on the Pixel 8 for now, especially given that I can hold it and that it promises longevity in terms of OS/software/security updates, as well as good battery life (I hear complaints that it charges slow, but that actually helps batteries to last longer). What's your take? Might there be a model I've missed that you'd recommend given a €500-650 budget range?
That's quite a few requirements for a phone to be fair, especially with the limited budget - the small screen size and longevity of software updates really cuts down the options. The S24 generally looks good, but uses the Exynos chipset in Europe, which is significantly worse than the Snapdragon Gen 3 used in the same phone for the rest of the world. My only other suggestion would be the Samsung S23, which you can find for cheaper now, and uses the Snapdragon processor in Europe. The only issue is you only get 4 years of software updates and 5 of security updates (although we are now 1.5 years into that cycle). Based on what you've said, I think the Pixel 8 is probably your best option to be honest, with the S24 being a second place, if you're willing to try out the Exynos chipset and see if it meets your needs. I personally also prefer the software experience on the Pixel phones having used the S22 before switching to the Pixel 8. I hope this helps - thanks for the comment!
@@arranpbrown It very much does help, I appreciate the insight! I guess it's fair to say that the budget would be relatively low for a device to last me a long time, though I do consider it a pretty hefty sum already. I tend to splurge on my PC systems so that they can last me a good while; I suppose that it's similar in the smartphone space.
@Celis.C no worries! I think you can get a good phone in that price range to be fair, but specifically compact phones tend to sacrifice some of the other things you require, if that makes sense. I think the rumoured Pixel 9 Pro could be a really nice phone, as it's rumoured to be a similar size to the regular Pixel 8, but with the Pro features. It will probably have a much higher price tag though...!
Loved your review and clicked subscribed button.
Thank you! 🙌
It is the worst cell phone I have ever had, it heats up, it burns the battery, it does not show the files, photos, documents, etc. in the "Files", it is slow, more than the Xiaomi 11 of 2021
Interesting - I haven't really had much of these issues! I've had a little bit of delay in the files app when it's loading a large amount of photos, but not enough for it to be super annoying or anything. Thanks for sharing your experience though, and sorry to hear it's not been good!
My S24 Plus camera is pretty bad, with all sorts of issues with the camera images. I would gladly trade the S24 for a Pixel 8 Pro and its awesome camera, which I've tried side by side with my S24 and it's not even close. The problem is I'm stuck with the S24 Plus now, it's so fast and has an awesome display and battery, but what good is a great phone with a terrible camera?
I guess it all comes down to what you value most highly in a phone - I'd probably prioritise the display and battery over the camera if I had to, but that's just me! It's difficult to find the perfect phone for each person though. Thanks for the comment and I hope you find a solution soon!
When shooting in 4k hdr it adds sidebars and the video is narrow and in and not full screen. Do you know why? nevermind I was in portrait mode I guess
Ahh okay, glad you figured it out 😁
im looking forward to the pixel 9pro...pixel 8 is a good size but the 7 pro is a better phone...i think
Yeah, I'm also looking forward to the 9 Pro being a similar size to the Pixel 8 but having more features - it works well on iPhone, so I'm excited for them to bring that to the Pixel.
I have been using Pixel 8 since January. There have been some bugs I noticed on my device such as the selfie camera has weird colour issue before clicking pictures. They get correct after clicking pics. Sometimes my device show colour shift on display in bright sunlight.
Interesting - I haven't seen the issue with the colours going strange, but I think the colour of the screen does seem to be slightly affected at higher brightnesses. Thanks for the comment and sharing your experience!
It is quite evident when the phone is warm. I live in a Sub-tropical country. In winter the pixel used to work fine but since summers it heats up a lot even when not being used. This colour shift evident since summers. I have reported this issue via a feedback to google. Let’s hope it gets fixed up soon enough.
I have encountered other annoying issues on the Google pixel smartphones, like how somehow for no reason incoming calls are blocked, I also suffered from bugs and viruses with no support whatsoever from Google.
Interesting - I've not had any issues with phone calls being blocked. Sounds like a frustrating issue though! Thanks for the comment!
I've owned the Pixel 1, 3, 7 and now the 8. I rarely upgrade a phone after one year. However there was a hardware upgrade deal over the previous Christmas period where it was an extra $5CAD per month for the device and then a $120CAD buy it option at the end of 2 years. The Pixel 8 is an amazing device. Although I do miss my Lemongrass P7 a little.
Nice one! Sounds like a good deal to be honest.
Where i live 4g works more consistently than 5g so i just stick with 4g and it's good.
Yup, I'm the same to be honest!
still not sure if I should get the Pixel 8 or wait for the 9, since it might get a better processor, leading to better battery life.. 🤔
I'm not sure how much better the efficiency of the 9 will be, but if you can wait, it will certainly be better somehow!
I think dark color makes the fingerprints visible on back of the phone. I have hazel and I don't see fingerprints.
I think you're right - the dark colour definitely makes it more obvious! Thanks for the comment 😊
Is just only on 4k that the rolling shutter really bad?
The rolling shutter does seem to be slightly better in 1080p, but it's still not 'good' compared to other cameras, I'd say. I'd suggest only using this camera if you're not planning on doing any action shooting or a lot of movement in your shots, I think!
Great video! Regarding the software issue, same thing happen to me on the Pixel 6, very weird!
Thank you! Yeah, it's a strange one for sure! Thanks for watching and commenting! 😁👌
Used to have the Pixel 4a great phone, now Pixel is hit and miss software, im Samsung user now and Software experience is Stella ,wish Google would get their Sxxxx together ,roll on 2025 when TSMC will manufacture Tensor👍👍
Glad you're happy with your current phone - it does seem that way sometimes with the Pixel to be fair! I'm excited to see what TSMC manage to do with the Tensor! Cheers for the comment 😁
@@arranpbrown 👍👍
Gemini now available in the EU and works just fine.
Interesting - do you mean to the app for your phone? Because that's not available in the UK yet unfortunately. We can access Gemini via a browser, but not the app or integration with Google Assistant.
@@arranpbrown app on the phone. Maybe cause ur outside eu. Just a thought.
@TomatenDK yeah, I'm pretty sure that's it unfortunately. Not sure if we'll ever get it at this rate!
My Pixel 8 has none of the issues which you mentioned (out of focus camera, apps freezing). Battery life is very much ok for me but I'm not a smartphone addict so the battery would usually last 1.5 days if I forget to charge it
Glad to hear you haven't had any of the same issues! And great to hear you are having a good experience with the battery too - thanks for the comment! 😁
The freezing apps still continue.
Yeah, I've had it happen to me since making this video to be honest. Not the worst glitch, but can be quite annoying at times!
My canon raw files are very flat, but my Sony .arw files are quite processed right out of the camera. Why is that?
So, from a quick Google search, it seems that if you change the gamma setting on the picture profile that you are using on your Sony camera then this can affect the colours of the RAW file - I've never really noticed this to be honest, but possibly something to look into! So, it's possible that you have a picture profile turned on? I'd recommend going to your PP settings and ensuring 'no picture profile' is selected. See this link for more info: discuss.pixls.us/t/sony-picture-profile-affects-raw/41958
I am interested in this phone Could anyone try out Open Camera apps to see if it works fine a least for long exposure or iso If shot the picture from non original picture can it still enjoy those AI features?
In my country pixel 7 pro and pixel 8 have the same price, my main priority is camera, and software updates does not matter to me that much cause I'll be changing my phone after 1 or 1.5 years later so based on just camera performance, which phone should i get?
Interesting. I think the main differences to consider in this case then are the screen size and the cameras. If you value having a smaller screen, and don't mind not having a telephoto option for the camera, then go for the Pixel 8. If you prefer a larger screen and need a telephoto option for the camera, then choose the Pixel 7 Pro. I don't think things like performance or battery life are going to be hugely different between the two devices to be honest. I hope this helps!
@@arranpbrown I don't have any demand or screen size, i just want the best overall camera experience, soo which one should i go for? I mean having a telephoto camera is a big advantage but what do you think? Which is the overall good one considering every section of cameras?
I would recommend going for the 7 Pro then as you get a whole extra camera - it's going to be way more versatile! It's less about the camera hardware these days and more about the processing of the cameras - both will give you excellent results!
Sometimes fingerprint isn't accepted for safety. Every now and then it wants the PIN. Had that on my S9+ as well. Android thing.
Yeah, that's true to be fair - good point!
bro thanks for the vid i'm about to buy one today
No worries mate! Enjoy it!
interesting.... i am considering this one and i find it to be a good review. my current phone is an iphone 8+ and it's ok but i think this pixel 8 is better, and plus i am just more interested in no longer using apple. i do not really experience glitches that often but i've had a similar unresponsive one at times. my battery life is also pretty bad (and also extremely inconsistent). on low battery mode i usually start my day around 7 and when i get home around 4 it's anywhere from 30-1% and sounds so bad without that. so the pixel 8 seems like a very good upgrade for those reasons. i do however not care about camera that much or ai features at all plus i am a US resident so i think i'm good on that front! i also hear it supposedly has some built in vpn options which i find pretty good good video :D
Nice! I think the Pixel 8 would be a great upgrade in your case and it's good you are based in the U.S. as you won't miss out on any features 🙂 thanks for watching and for the comment!
@@arranpbrown i really appreciate this video and i appreciate how you are so active in the conversations around your video :)
Thank you! I try to answer all my comments 😁 thank you for watching! I appreciate you!
@@arranpbrown your video is very helpful and informative
Hi, great video! As far as I'm concerned, the huge drawback of this model is the lack of a good processor. They're a couple generations too late. But judging by the system optimization their own processor is quite enough.
Fair point! Although in practice, I've not had any issues with slowdowns etc. with the Tensor G3. I think it may be the source of the little bugs and glitches that keep arising though, which is a bit frustrating. It would be quite interesting if we had a Snapdragon version of the phone to compare it to, like we do with EU-basee Samsung phones using the Exynos chip instead of the Snapdragon chips.
Do you have access to Moment lenses? If so, can you use it with recording on the pixel?
I don't have access to any Moment lenses I'm afraid, but they do make a case for the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro about would allow you to use their lenses: www.shopmoment.com/products/moment-case-for-pixel-8-pro-compatible-with-magsafe?variant=47464330723643&tab=features. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching!
@@arranpbrown Thanks for sharing! I just wanted to see what the video would look like. Maybe you could ask them for a sample for review.
Just bought the Pixel 8 256GB new for €264 yesterday and couldn't be happier 😁
Wow, fantastic deal - that's a lot of phone for that price 😁👏 enjoy!!
@@arranpbrown Thanks! I was long due for an update and I will not be surprised if I manage to keep this phone going for the full support term 😁 Thank you for a great review! It was a big help in deciding 👍
@gnarr Very glad I could help! Would be super interested to see how this phone holds up in 7 years 😅
Great review, I am using a pixel 8 and had the same glitches while using the apps. But the most outrageous issue with no solution is the hotspot that never turn on, you cannot share internet in a 2023 phone, and Google is not responding!
Thank you! Oh, that's odd - I haven't had that issue before. I think it's possible for your carrier to block use of a hotspot if it's not allowed on your data plan, so it might be worth checking if it's from your carrier's end? Hotspot has been working fine on my Pixel 8!
@@arranpbrown l had the same sim card on a Samsung phone and hotspot was working fine. I searched on the internet and found other people having the same issue. Anyway I will keep searching for a solution, thank you for your feedback, keep up!
@ELHAOUARIAbdelhalim hmm, strange - what a weird issue! Hope you manage to find a fix for it! No worries 🙂
thank you.. you saved me
Glad to help!
Would adding extra storage via sd card plugged into the usbc port work for extra storage?
Possibly, but it would be a pain in the arse to carry that around all the time haha. You can definitely do that on iPhone though! I think you'd have to rig it up so that having the adaptor wasn't hanging off the USB-C port the whole time, and you'd have to use a Bluetooth mic too I think!
Would be good to see this video done with a "Pro" iPhone they are getting closer to the quality of real cameras these days.
Maybe I'll have to borrow yours 😅
Idk, just log format and big sensor seems enough for a "pro grade camera". Pixel 8 has slightly smaller size 1/1.31 compared to iPhone's 1/1.28, but it's still no big deal. But Xiaomi 14 Ultra and Oppo Find X7 Ultra with large sensors on 75 mm lenses are just the next level when you want yo have small grip and clear optical blur
Thanks for watching! What do you think of using the Pixel 8 for creating videos? Let me know down below! 👇
I love my pixel. Software is great, photos are great. But switching from iPhone to Pixel, first thing I realised when it comes to video, iPhones are way better. Even the non pros out of box are great. I'll choose that
Yup, I agree that iPhones are definitely better for video! I was pleasantly surprised with the results from the main camera on the Pixel 8 though, despite not having much flexibility over the settings!
@@arranpbrown Why is your name Arran but not Aaron? Is that a Scottish thing?
Yes, it's the Scottish spelling! There is a Scottish island called Arran, and that's what I'm named after 😅
I would appreciate a short video on using the 8a, should you have the time. I know the whole discussion about grabbing the Pixel 8 is just a few dollars more but the 8a is just gonna be more budget. Can content creation get just as good with an older camera setup but current gen image processing?
ultrawide video is very grainy, when you look at sides. Have you ever tried Astrophotography mode on Pixel when you travel ? It's amazing. You probably need a tripod tho because hand shakes when considering what's the timer you set.
Yeah, there is a huge difference between the main camera and the ultrawide! The main camera is super sharp and had no issues with noise whereas the Ultrawide is grainy and quite soft apart from in the perfect lighting. I haven't tried the Astrophotography mode to be fair, but I have heard it works really well! And yeah, I imagine a tripod would get you the best results. Thanks for watching and thanks for the comment! 😁
I'm glad I found this video, it definitely gave me info I didn't find anywhere else. I've used a Pixel 4a in the past, and had family members on Pixels for multiple generations now. I'm looking to get myself a new phone and can't decide what I want to get between a Oneplus 12 and a Pixel 8. The Pixel 8 would be cheaper, but no one ever seems to mention their weird glitches and bugs that show up and go away for no reason, only to be replaced by more. I love the camera quality and software, but I'm leaning towards Oneplus for the sake of stability and peace of mind
I'm very glad I could help! I'm always just trying to share my honest experience, so it's great to have some nice feedback on that. Overall, I'd say the Pixel 8 is a great phone, but like you said, you might find some better stability elsewhere as Google is constantly putting new features in that can cause little issues elsewhere in the software. Hopefully you're happy with whatever you decide to pick up! Cheers for the comment, and for watching 😁
man.. can't believe these software issues still exist, i so bad want to switch to a pixel... i guess i will wait for nothing phone 3 instead.. software stability >>>cameras for me...😢
Yeah, unfortunately - like I said in the video though, these aren't deal breakers for me, just slightly annoying. And the software experience overall is generally very nice on the Pixel 8, but it would be nice to have a perfectly stable experience, or at least one where occasional glitches weren't so obvious to cause annoyance haha. Cheers for the comment!
