How Do I Teach My Dog 🐕 to Stand on Command
Просмотров 4244 года назад
How Do I Teach My Dog 🐕 to Stand on Command
when do you stop rewarding with treats? or is it smth that you must always do to get them to listen to you?
@@lalalahihihi Great question! 🎉 You don’t have to rely on treats forever. What you’re describing touches on a training technique called variable reinforcement. 🐾 This means that instead of giving a treat every time, you reward your dog unpredictably-sometimes after one repetition, sometimes after a few. This way, your dog is always guessing when the next treat might come, which keeps them engaged and excited to listen! 🤩 Over time, you can gradually phase out the treats and replace them with praise, petting, or even a favorite toy. The key is to make sure your dog still feels rewarded, so they remain motivated to follow your commands. 🌟 Eventually, you’ll find that your dog will perform the behavior reliably, even with just verbal praise or a pat on the head! 🐶👍🏽 Hope this helps! Well wishes in your dog training journey! 😊

Could I do this with odor? Or do you have a different odor game we could play. TIA
Think a clicker would help with my 11 week old American bulldog. The consistency aspect.
Of course. However, anything you do with a clicker you can do with your voice. It adds a level of consistency to your training as your pup develops a positive association with the sound and anticipates a reward, whether that be verbal praise, physical touch, or a treat. As long as your timing is good, though, you can use your voice. It’s also great to get your pup used to multiple signals. Best of luck in your dog training journey and thanks for tuning in to the channel.

How does he signal that he has found the treat?
Hi Geryah, I'd like to ask: the Rulebook says "To prepare the odor for trial, two (2) drops of the oil should be applied directly to the cotton ball or cotton swab" and I understand from other sources, ONE swab is placed in a hide vessel for a trial, ie the one saturated with two drops of oil. In your video, you prepare the swabs in a way similar to eg. NACSW, ie apply the oil on several swabs in a jar, shake, and let sit for a few hours. Only you apply the oil directly on the swabs, while (as far as I've noticed) NACSW apply it on the inside of the jar . Is this for training purposes, while in a trial you'll always get 1 swab with 2 drops in 1 hide vessel? Thanks very much for clarification!
I’m a little confused on the appropriate behavior for the doorbell or someone knocking. I have preotective breeds(Belgian Malinois and German Shepherd). And frankly, living alone as a woman.. I appreciate the natural deterrence of a serious bark. Is the test supposed to show your dog not alerting at all? Or stopping when you say?
Thank you for condensing this information down. Now, I gotta watch it again!

It's interesting how different countries do it differently. Here we do more like NACSW but with different titles and slightly different test criteria on the same elements (interior, exterior, container and vehicle) and it's either pass or fail and timed for placings but we also have Cypress as well as Clove, Birch and Anise.
Thank you for sharing this interesting insight! 🌟 It’s fascinating to hear how different countries have their unique approaches to scent work. The variations in titles and test criteria add a rich diversity to the sport. Including Cypress alongside Clove, Birch, and Anise sounds like a great way to broaden the challenges for our dogs. 🐾 Your perspective adds so much value to the conversation. Does this work with puppies as well?
Absolutely! It’s great you’re curious about clicker training for puppies, and it’s a fantastic question. Clicker training is not just effective but also a wonderfully positive method to help your furry friend learn and grow. Here’s why it’s such a great choice: 1. Clear Communication: Think of the clicker as a way of saying “yes!” in a language your puppy understands perfectly. It tells them precisely what action earned them a treat, making it easier for them to repeat that positive behavior. 2. Positive Reinforcement: It’s all about encouraging good behavior through rewards. This approach is incredibly motivating for puppies and builds a happy, stress-free learning environment. 3. Immediate Feedback: Puppies live in the moment! The clicker allows you to mark the exact moment they do something right, which is essential for effective learning. 4. Builds a Strong Bond: Clicker training is based on trust and positive reinforcement, which naturally strengthens the bond between you and your puppy. It’s not just about training; it’s about building a relationship. 5. Encourages Creativity: Both you and your puppy can get creative with clicker training. It’s a fun way to teach new tricks and behaviors, keeping training sessions engaging and rewarding. Remember, the key to successful clicker training is consistency, patience, and a relationship with your pup. Start with simple commands and gradually build up to more complex tasks. Celebrate the small wins with your puppy, and enjoy the journey.i It's amazing what they can pick up.
I couldn't find anything on what you actually did to place scent in the box. Q tips? In a metal container? Just laying in the box? One drop of oil, two three?

@@DingleDays excellent, thanks!
Geryah, was wondering if you could help me out. My dog will pickup the sick if left in the open. Is there another way to train?? TIA
Hi @AKKTerry! Sorry for the delayed response, and thanks for your question. 🐾 When training for handler discrimination, it can be tricky if your dog grabs the scented item instead of indicating it. Here are a few strategies to address this: 1. Use a Barrier: Place a barrier, like a mesh cover or a small grate, over the box with the scented item. This allows your dog to smell the scent without being able to grab it. Reward your dog for indicating the box without attempting to take the item. 2. Focus on Indication: Train your dog to indicate the scent by sitting, lying down, or pawing at the box rather than picking it up. You can do this by rewarding your dog only when they perform the desired indication behavior. 3. Scent Pads: Use a scent pad or a piece of cloth instead of a sock. These can be attached to the bottom of the box or placed under a cover, making it harder for your dog to grab them. 4. Desensitization: Gradually desensitize your dog to the presence of the scent item. Start with the scented item in a closed box and reward your dog for calmly indicating without grabbing. Slowly introduce more access to the item as your dog learns to indicate without grabbing. 5. Incremental Training: Start with the scented item in a visible but unreachable position. Reward your dog for finding the scent without trying to grab it. Gradually move to more accessible positions as your dog learns to control their impulse to grab. By implementing these strategies, you can help your dog learn to indicate the target scent without grabbing it. Continue to get after it 🙌🏽

Thank you so much for your videos! I find them excellent and have helped me and my little mini dachshund a ton! My question to you is how or what is the best way to clean the hides in order to reuse for other scents?? thank you
Hi @lynnmckinney7376! Thank you so much for your kind words and apologies for the delayed response. I’m glad to hear that my videos have been helpful for you and your mini dachshund! 🐾 When it comes to cleaning hides for reuse with other scents, here are some steps you can follow based on best practices in the scent work community: 1. Initial Cleaning: Start by washing the hides with hot water and a mild, unscented soap to remove any residues. Make sure to rinse them thoroughly to ensure no soap remains. 2. Disinfection: Soak the hides in a solution of one part white vinegar to three parts water for about 10-15 minutes. This helps to neutralize any remaining odors without leaving a strong scent. 3. Rinse and Dry: Rinse the hides thoroughly with clean water to remove any remaining vinegar solution. Allow them to air dry completely to prevent any mold or mildew growth. 4. Odor Neutralization: If there is still a lingering scent, place the hides in a container with baking soda for a few days. Baking soda is excellent at absorbing and neutralizing odors. 5. Storage: Once the hides are clean and odor-free, store them in an airtight container or zip-lock bags to prevent them from picking up any new scents before you’re ready to use them again. These steps should help you effectively reuse your hides for different scent training sessions. This method is widely used and recommended within the scent work community, ensuring that your equipment remains clean and free of cross-contamination between different scents. For more guidelines, you can search for resources provided by organizations like the National Association of Canine Scent Work (NACSW) and the American Kennel Club (AKC). Thanks again for your question, and continue to get after it 🙌🏽

@@DingleDays can I use also maxi letter boxes?
@@Ziya87Akin the boxes 📦 themselves do not really matter. It’s the skillet we are trying to teach so use what you’ve got. In fact, you want to even train without the boxes so your dog can generalize the behavior (search luggage, old items you pick up from Goodwill, shelves, outside in the grass, etc. as you progress).
