Like I said on the previous vid: your are a true reference. And this is a pure masterclass. Thank you once again for your dedication in sharing your knowledge. Enjoyed every minute of it.
For vids like this, people Will engage more if you show the final product after going through how it was made 😊
I thought about doing that, but wasn't sure if was needed. Thanks for the feedback, I'll try that for the next one!
there's literally nothing like this on youtube. thank you so so so so much.
@@xanders1813 Right! There's a severe lack of cosplay photography related learning content! I wish more people made stuff like this because I like to learn by watching other people's workflows.
@@ryanansen It's seriously so helpful. I've been working with blender and photoshop separately for 5-6 years, but combining them is a whole new beast. thanks again, will continue to tune in!

@@dfalekulo9138 thanks for the suggestion! I'll have some free time next week to make another video, so maybe I'll go over that process!
Since the default scene is based on the human scale, I think it's important to have a grid that represents that scale. It might be a good idea to go to the overlay settings (at the top of the viewport window) and change the scale to .01. Now the positioning is based on 1 meter. (Grab X axis and move 1unit is equivalent to 1 meter), but you can see a grid down to a centimeter (about the size of a finger nail). That being said, I am American and would have liked to use Imperial instead. I have played around with trying to find the best default Imperial settings and honestly.... I just can't make it work intuitively. I respect that Blender resorts to increments of 3 because of inches, feet, yards, and miles.... but the bold grid lines aren't intuitive. And if you are working with a dimension that is less then an inch, then the grid lines become meaningless. I would appreciate a source that provides a good setup when using Imperial. In the meantime. I just accept that metric is the way to go and will have to do the conversions if I need to scale an object appropriately.
It's actually pretty easy to use Imperial measurements in Blender! Go to the Scene Properties tab (the icon that looks like a cone) and under the Units section change it from Metric to Imperial. The grid will automatically change as well and each square will represent 1 ft. Hope that helps!
@@ryanansen I truly appreciate your response. But if we're thinking on a scale of a human, then I'm trying to find a grid system that reflects inches, feet, and yards. If you dive deeper into managing the Imperial settings... it's as complicated as the Imperial units are IRL. Like I referenced in my original comment, Blender seems to just use factors of 3. The smallest grid increment is 3 units long. But if you count the next level of units, there are 24 units between each grid line. And if you go out further, the next grid increment is in groups of 10 which makes absolutely no sense in Imperial. I'm at a loss.... I might be an idiot and simply not grasping something obvious. But I've given up. Metric just works.
@@dwightfry99 I might just be misunderstanding what you're talking about, so I apologize if I am. That being said, When I set Blender to use Imperial, the default grid scale of one has the smaller squares equal to 1 foot, and the larger squares equal to 1 yard. And if I need to see grids for inches, I just go to the grid scale and type in 1/12 and now each small grid square is 1 inch long. With that, it seems to be working perfectly for the Imperial system. I'm using Blender 4.2, by the way, so I can't speak for how it works in other versions of Blender.
@@ryanansen What you describe is exactly what I am looking for. I guess all I can do is try again tomorrow.. I've updated to 4.2 as well. Thx for letting me know that it's intended to work as one would expect.
Ryan, you are my reference in this type of work. You cannot imagine the pleasure it is to see your videos. Thank you very much for dedicating time to teach us.
That means a lot! I want to see as many people as possible create art, so I really enjoy showing my process as much as I can to see that happen. I'll keep doing this for as long as I can!
At 2:40:39 Why don't use the different blurs in the "blur gallery"? I think you could achieve a similar effect, or perhaps is there a reason behind not using them? Love your work man, I have always been fascinated by your skills so having this video is trully a gem. As a photographer who doesn't know anything about blender this was the best tutorial I could ever ask for! PS: All your work is fire, man.
Firstly, thank you so much! I'm very happy to hear you're a fan of my work, and I'm glad I've put out a video that let's beginners follow along! To answer your question, there's no big reason why I chose this method! There are a thousand ways to do things with art, many of which all arrive at similar results. This method is just what I happened to use!
Really cool! It's nice to see the whole process. It really demystifies a lot of what's going on and I feel like I could follow along.
That's great to hear! My goal with this was to allow beginners to follow along, so hopefully there wasn't anything to confusing or hard to follow!
Love these! And would love to see lots more. Amazing stuff
I'll try my best!
@@ryanansen Awesome. I feel this, your “jam style” session, is far superior to polished and overly-edited tutorials 🙌🏻💪🏻
@@MarquardDK That's really good to know! I've always been heavily against making something like this because I am an extreme perfectionist and everything about making this was so unplanned and structured that it felt like low quality content. But at the same time it was way more fun to make. The hard part is my ADHD makes me go off on a thousand tangents and spend 30 minute explaining what should only take 5 minutes.
I struggle quite a bit with perspective and a lot of the things you say in this video are really helpful. This video convinced me to learn blender myself so I can experiment on some ideas before doing a shoot. It can be awkward sometimes when you just wanna see what a shot looks like and you need to direct a stranger to do something that might not even look good lol.
That is so awesome to hear! I'm super happy to know you were able to pick out some useful information in this! And yes, experimenting in 3D before a shoot is a great way to plan it out! Especially if you bring in posed 3D models of characters, you can even plan out your lighting ahead of time. In fact, I think I might make a video on that, thanks for bringing up that topic!

@@NikolayZharov thank you! I'm glad it's helpful! I'll be doing more of these longer, casual videos about the various techniques I do! This video was way easier and more fun to make than my usual super planned out breakdown videos.

Thanks! And yeah, there's a ton of shortcuts I don't know or don't use. Between all the various programs I utilize, it's so hard to remember all the shortcuts.
thank you so much dude
This is an awesome photo! I want to ask what sorts of planning went into the photo before you took it. Did you already have an idea of what the final image was going to look like? And did you then take just 1 photo during the shoot, and that's it? Or were there multiple poses/ideas tried during the shoot?
Thank you for the comment! This photo was taken so long ago, I don't remember exactly how my planning went, but I can definitely tell you how I go about pre-production in general! It starts with a concept or idea. In this case, my friend had a Gogo Yubari cosplay that she wanted photos of and hired me for a shoot. Depending on how long I have or how much time I have, I'll spend an hour or two researching the character or show/movie/game to get a stronger idea of who the character is and their style. I'll then start gathering reference photos that are similar to how I might want to approach the photo. It might be a random photo I found that has lighting I like, or one that has an interesting composition/framing, always taking note of what exactly I like about the reference image so that I know why I chose that image. I'll usually have a good 50-70% idea of how I'd like the image to look before I do the photoshoot that way I can make sure my lighting works for the idea I have in mind. Sometimes I'll plan out exact poses and lighting I want per photo, sometimes I'll just wing it and let my subject express themselves naturally and see if there's something I like. I'm always taking a bunch of photos per shoot, even if I'm editing only a couple of them, just so I have options to choose from. Hope this helps!
@@ryanansen Thank you this helps a lot!
Thank you for your work 🙏 this will be my goal to start editing cosplay photo. I'm currently stuck on what and how i should do it, and your video help me found it, thank you!!!
