Welcome to TimKustom Model Cars. This channel will showcase the models I’ve built, and collected. You can also find kit reviews, shows and contests and tips and techniques. The models I build are not traditional “Kustom” cars, but I strive to make them Kustom in my own way. I hope you enjoy and subscribe because I have all kinds of model car stories to tell.
No paint? No Problem! This chassis is a Doozy! How to build a nice model without paint.
In this video I get busy building something for @sodakmodelcars Naked Group Build, which means building a model without using paint. Is that even possible? Of course it is, and this can be an enjoyable change of pace.

I don't consider myself a serious collector, until it comes to well built models. This one was built decades ago and still holds up nicely. A pretty special technique was used on it as well. Hope you enjoy! #ford #hotrod #modelcars #howto

I've designed many decals for my scale models and printed them on ink jet printers. I recently saw ink jet printers advertised for under $40 so I wondered the quality of decals it would print. ❤ the tunes! Nice combo build!! -KK
Love old school Monogram kits. The silver and black look Great!!! I'll be watching
Going to be quite a stunner! Excellent work Tim!
Looking good 👍🏿
Thanks Leon!
Thanks for sharing. That's some precise work to cut off that roof.
You're welcome! The top wasn't that bad, slow and easy is the key.
Looking great Tim.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it.
This build is looking good, Tim. It will look awesome when finished. I have this original kit that is still sealed. Have fun with this group build.
Thanks! Glad you are enjoying it. They do look cool assembled.
Looking cool Tim! Great choices 😎👍
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it.
Have you ever tried an ultrasonic knife? I love mine.
I have not, but have seen them advertised. Perhaps a good tool review in the future? Thanks for watching.
Looks great
Thanks for watching!
Looking good! Was there any benefit to the driver being exposed to the elements, or was it just pure spite towards the help?
Interesting question. I'd say there can't be any benefit to having a soiled chauffer open your door. Stay tuned!
I have the packard boattail of the metal masters edition. I believe it came out in 1988ish? Cat knocked it off the shelf, now it’s copper and black with red pinstripes and gold trim.
Sounds like you have a very unique model! Thanks for watching.
Very creative. Thanks.
You’re welcome 😊
That’s going to be so cool. Not going to lie. Even I was nervous watching you cut those tops. 😂
Thanks! The top surgery was not that bad. The trick is to start slow and light, then stay in the groove.
So far, so good. Keep up the great work!
Thanks, glad you're enjoying it.
Looking Awesome!! Does panel liner count, or can you use it?
I believe Sodak mentioned using panel liner as well as Molotow pens and Sharpie markers. I'm trying to keep those to a minimum. Glad you enjoyed it.!
That is going to be sweet Tim K.
Glad you think so. Thank for watching.
That is a creative concept. Thanks for committing it to "film".
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching.
Looks most excellent. Going to be another awesome build. I would just add one thing. Why don't you build them both simultaneously. You cut the tops so clean they both should go right back. It would be like a photo and the negative at the same time, Sam
Thanks! It would be hard to send a Duesenberg to the burn pile... Stay tuned!
7:59 they both look like a good time to take a break
Thanks for watching!
Man that is looking awesome. Ron
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it.
Why does your no paint, half finished car look better than my finished ones?!
LOL! Thanks for watching!
I built a number of these Monogram models back in the 60s long before Monogram merged with Revell. Yes that far back. They were reissued a number of times. These models were designed to present well with or without paint. The detail ,fit quality and finish were fantastic. Thanks to the internet I've been able to buy replacements as my originals did not survive. Try the Roll Royce next as it had opening doors and steerable front wheels. This line of kits sold for around $3.00 back then and a tube of Testors cement was 10 cents.
These are great kits, which is why I chose this subject for this group build. I built the Rolls as a child and it was a challenge. Thanks for watching!
That's a good looking paint-less build, no doubt about it. But I'm wondering if the judges in your contest will approve of your choice to swap the tops of the plated and black molded kits since they had to be physically cut off each piece. This is quite a bit different than swapping the unmodified fender and interior assemblies, and other parts. That said, cutting the tops from the bodies required lots of patience and skill, with absolutely NO margin for error. Much respect for that! The plated "stainless steel" Duesenberg body looks great, and I wish you the best of luck! 25th Like.
This is not a contest. It is a group build challenge. The only real "rule" is to not use any paint. There might be a little "gray area" allowing Molotow pens and Sharpie markers, which if used will be very minimal. Any decals, parts swapping, or construction techniques are allowed and encouraged. Thanks for the interest and glad you enjoyed the video.
@@timkustom I get that. At first, it sounded to me like the old "Out-of-the-Box Contest" rules of the 1970's - 1980's when I was in IPMS. Other than aftermarket decals, very little was permitted. For aircraft modelers, you could thin trailing edges, drill out gunports, and even add some simple rigging if shown on the box art, but nothing more. The understood rule-of-thumb was that adding the antenna to a P-51 Mustang was allowed, but the complete rigging of a Fokker Eindecker was not. The biggest exception was the rule that if the kit's instruction sheet specifically suggested a modification, you could do it. I once entered the 1/48th scale Hawk / ITC OV-10A Bronco kit which specifically showed that the canopy could be cut and posed open to "test" the rules, and had no problems. (I was 17 at the time.) But this was more of a potentially contentious issue for model car builders since anyone with an old AMT "Styline" kit that had instructions specifically saying you could use parts from other kits could have been a problem; to say nothing of being permitted "by the instructions" to perform major restyling. Fortunately, in my IPMS Chapter, we all accepted the spirit of the rules as well as the letter, and I don't remember any serious problems. Have fun with your group build, and I'll look forward to your finished builds!
You had a fantastic build year! You’re off to a great start in 2025. Happy New Year! 🎈🎊🎆
Thanks so much! I appreciate that!
Great look for such a flawed kit . Love the color combo !
Thanks for the kind words. Glad you enjoyed the build!
Do these shows ever come to the Pittsburgh Pa. area?
There is a model club in the Pittsburgh PA area that has announced they are hosting a show in March. Check them out and tell them TimKustom Models sent you. threeriversipms.blogspot.com
Great Show Coverage Tim, I like your "subdued" not so over the top tongue in cheek narration style! Sure wish we had some shows up here in the "Pacific Northwest Modeling Desert"!
Glad you enjoyed the coverage. I believe there are some pretty good shows in your neck of the woods.
Love it! Had to have been a good jab at Batson with his ultra detailed everything including the glovebox. Then Matthew with his over-engineer-it-as-you-go build style!! LoL!! Love Both Mark and Matthew, harass Mark often so this had to have been a great build off. For some stupid reason I don't know why I missed it, I've watched all the other ones... Just "Discovered" your channel watching Matt's channel where you helped him back-half his '36 Ford Coupe, I must ve under a Rock or Something, I'm in the Pacific Northwest that's pretty close to being under a rock, ask Batson, they were stationed up here! LoL! New Subscriber too!
Glad you found this channel. Those guys are great friends and thanks for the sub! Lots of stuff to see around here!
How do you cut away the photo etched pieces from the metal plate?
I typically cut them on a piece of glass with a fresh e-xacto. The metal is very soft and cuts easily. Good luck with your projects!
Okie dokie, thankya sir for the modeling tip . . . I appreciate it, bud😃👍🏻! I gottuh get back into this hobby cuz I've been out of it for quite a number of years now! Happy modeling to ya😃
i need the tires and whitewalls from that kit.
They are fairly plentiful on that auction site. Sometimes great deals are to be had. Good luck with your projects!
Absolutely nice work I'm going to use a few of your ways in future builds
Glad you found them helpful. Good luck with your projects!
You had a Great year. Love old school Monogram kits. Thanks for sharing
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it!
Injet printers that can print white are very expensive. Are you saying that the printer you featured in the video which cost just US$39 will print white? If not, then how did you acheive creating white? Cheers.
Correct, how I achieved white was I used white decal paper which was explained in the video. Thanks for watching!
@@timkustom I didn't watch the whole video so I must have missed that bit. If using white decal paper you would have had to cut around the decal then. You must have a very steady hand!
I also explained a workaround for that in the video. Thanks for watching!
Nice build Tim
Thanks!
Hey Tim, Nice kit can't wait to see what you do. Nice builds for the year
Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed it. Stay tuned!
I have a question maybe you can be some help with, it may be a needle in a ASAP, but it’s worth asking. Do you have any sources within California where I could purchase acrylic cases for my hand build models similar to your size and scale I live in Hawaii so I would need to really work on shipping, however I would like to know what the prices are if you have any contacts or possibly maybe you sell them in your shop as well appreciate your response. Thank you and happy New Year’s.
I would try looking for a hobby shop closer to your island. I know there are some in Honolulu. Otherwise, there are several other mail order companies that offer them. I suggest Spotlight Hobbies or Model Roundup. Good luck and thanks for watching!
Drive me to drinking driving that hot rod Lincoln.
Love that song. Thanks for watching!
That going to be a sharp build.

Hey buddy I'm sorry it took me awhile to subscribe. I'm just really getting back into the hobby after a 40 year absence. This is the kind of videos I'm looking for. Thank you for sharing and please keep doing what you do. I'd really like to meet you some day. You build some awesome stuff. Oh one more thing. I love the video you and Mathew put out today. I needed a good chuckle with this nasty weather we're having here in Kentucky.
Thanks for the sub! It was fun to stop in and see Matthew, glad you enjoyed his video. I try to attend many shows in the SE and beyond. Be sure to say hi if our paths cross.
@@timkustom I really hope they do I would really enjoy picking your brain on a few tips and tricks my goal is to make Jaxcon if not ACME this year.

Cool video and great choice on the group build
Thanks! It should be a fun build.
Love those classic cars. Have several of the Monogram Museum series kits.
Yes, these are great kits. I haven't build one in decades. Will be an interesting change of pace.
Awesome choice Tim I'll be watching ❤😊
Thanks! It should be a fun build.
Awesome build Tim, love the engine!
