Poor Moltres. I'm not an expert by any means, but I think pressure and flame body really do determine the ceiling for this thing. You said it, as soon as the Talonflame mirror came out with a superior ability, coach pretty much subbed him out instantly. I guess pressure could be somewhat helpful in certain slug fests, but is pretty much outclassed by any other ability in the competitive scene. Flame body is definitely a bit more useful but still is only a mild deterrent at best. These abilities just don't impact the game enough to give it a proper niche like Uno has with cloak and bright powder, or bulky static support Dos messing with speed tiers and para's. Great job on the video! Looking forward to seeing the worlds greatest Pokemon trainer in action!
Plus there is a lot of competition for that fire spot from dudes like incin and chi-yu

The film you see in my video is a copy of the only existing match footage. The original footage was taken via phone camera by one of Tommy's friends. But I put the entirety of what is recorded in this video!

Very nice Professor Weeb! I'm genuinely curious about the history of Moltres. Of the trio, that's the one I've played around with the least. Also.... Day 1 of requesting to be schooled on the Slowpoke evolution line!
Kanto Moltres has a very rich history in VGC even though it doesn't see much play these days. And I have 2 Slowpoke line videos planned. Keep an eye out!

What about misty explosion?
I wanted to focus on the evolution of the "classic" explosion, but ME definitely deserves an honorable mention. :)
Yes Rico, kaboom. Was brought here after thinking about using explosion Metagross in Reg F, wish it was still 500-ish base power. Still, even now in doubles vgc with non stab and spread, it acts like a single target 125 base power stab move, which is crazy. If normal type was better offensively I’d use it for sure.
Definitely nutty, I occasionally run into an explosion Metagross on the closed sheet, BO1 ladder. With open team sheets in official play, Explosion feels a lot less viable these days.

For sure! I think with the higher prevalence of protect, it definitely fell out of favor in the official format much faster than singles. A very short, but exciting history!

Crazy that something that comes up so often in Smogon's OU/UU Ladder in every generation was only good in a few formats in doubles, where it's a spread move.
Oh yeah, they're very different formats. I think one of the small, but important, differences between Smogon singles and VGC is that the cost of losing 1 of your Pokemon with a single move is too high at the highest level of play in VGC (it's bring 6, pick 4). It would be like giving up 2 mons in Smogon singles on a gamble that you MIGHT knock-out/damage 2 mons on the other team. Plus protect is the most used move in VGC so it's a really, really big gamble.

Super interesting. Gaming history and fun facts like this can easily get buried and forgotten. With most vgc channels primarily focused on interacting with the current meta game, the addition of this type of content offers a welcome change of pace.
