I think I mentioned before 'Basie and Zoot', which is probably the best record recorded for the Pablo label along with 'Duke's Big 4' and 'This One's For Blanton'. I bought these and many more ( e.g. Carter's 'The King') when they were new in the 1970s. The Tatum/Webster is a reissue from the Tatum Group Masterpieces from the 1950s, but a new issue of this is always welcome. I have this many times and in many versions and I will, if I can, acquire the new re-issue when it comes out. It is quite simply one of the greatest jazz records of all time with Ben not being intimidated by Tatum's masterful playing and just playing the way he always did to produce something magical. It is the stuff of legends. My recollection is that as the Pablo label went along Granz began to issue more and more jam sessions from Montreux on the label and the quality went down and became less interesting. That was how it seemed to me at the time.

Great video again Man. As I told you, yes, the last Basie big band's albums sound, musically, "tired" because the chief was ill. It shows us that Bill was really the boss. When he was in a good form, the band sounded like fireworks. When he was not well, the band sounded not precise, "tired" .... About On the Road, I was at the concert. They recorded in both digital and analog systems ! But Claude Nobs, the founder of the Montreux Jazz Festival, wanted to be the first man in Jazz to record his concerts with this new system, Digital. So he signed a special contract with Sony. They bought from Tokyo, just for the festival, this brand new digital machine. So Norman agreed because it was a really huge publicity for some new ways to record music on those days ! They sold a lot of albums because it was in Digital. That's why Norman put out a lot of those albums, written in big "Digital". But Claude recorded the concert with the usual equipment then. I have a copy of the analog concert and it's sounds 10x better than the digital one. I don't know if the original analog tapes are still around today ... I'm almost sure that nobody knows that analog tapes exist ... As I was there and a close friend of Bill, I can tell a lot about all of those things

They are around true, but the remasters generally sound better.... $40.00 better? that's you're call of course. I have not seen a clean Pablo ( certainly one not opened and pristine) under 10.00 in a long time.. usually I see them between 12-18.00, still better than 40.00 ! The vinyl on these reissues is super quite as well. Anyhow thanks for listening and for you're comment. I really appreciate it.--JG PS--Just as an aside... I've never met Chad Kassem or have been to Acoustic Sounds, and in no way am I monetized or receive anything for free. Some folks are and thus tend to sometimes plug things that they receive for free. I buy everything I talk about and try to be as honest as possible.

Jack - thanks for covering off on some of these lesser known titles and artists. By chance I happen to pick up the Bob Cooper record that you showed a couple of months. I really didn’t know Bob Cooper at that point, but could not pass up a clean vintage Contemporary pressing by Roy DuNann (black label cut using the Westrex cutting head). Of late I have been into mono pressings (I use have a dedicated mono turntable with a mono cart), but these stereo Contemporary pressings are dynamite. Similarly I picked up an OG stereo pressing of Shelly Manne at the Blackhawk #4 for $7 (solid VG and plays beautifully) just a couple 😅f days ago and it sounds great! I look forward to more upcoming videos.

Jack, thanks a lot for your great videos. To tell you the truth, I don't understand when, suddenly, they reissued, some Count Basie last recordings which are not, very far away, on the same level as some others Pablo's before .... The 2 which are reissued there are the last to buy !!! The band sounds very tired and not precise at all. Those are very very dissapointing sessions !!! Better than that : all the tunes were on the book for decades, never recorded before. So they had them in the fingers as I can say but it's not at the top level as Bill used to give us, musically. As, today, we are into "the best sound quality possible way", the producers decide to reissue those. Come on !!! What about "I Told You So", "Live in Japan 1978", "On The Road", the 2 volumes with Milt Jackson, "Warm Breeze", "Kansas City Shout" .... Those are masterpieces to me. As you know, Bill was not in good health since the fall of 1981 and really, we all can feel it. The band sounds more loud, unprecised, more conventional ... This was no more the Basie band that I loved, revered for all of decades that we know .... I'm pissed of, sorry to say. I think I have all Basie's albums, about 500. Sound quality first, then the quality of the music. I'll never buy this concept ! All about money and money, sellings and sellings !!!!!!! Bob Cooper was one the greatest to me, sooo underrated because he didn't recorded that much in Jazz settings, very busy in the studios for composing and arranging and this is a shame !!! But we can't go back and do again the history. But boy !! He could play !!! Great arranger and composer. Jazz people don't really know about it, he did a lot for TV shows, series and movies, cartoons, when his name appeared in a very little characters .... A shame but that was a time then. Life, sometimes, isn't always fair enough. He was a good friend of mine, that's why I write those words about him because I know all the story. Do you know who put and arranged Victor Feldman's moving from England to LA and in the LA studios ?

So glad to see a video on Andre Previn.I first heard his playing on Shelly Manne and Friends album and was really impressed, also his Jazz rendition of Camelot.Hes the only jazz pianist that I would ever consider in the same stratosphere as Bill Evans in that non Bluesey / classics based piano jazz that l prefer.

Bill Evans was never background music. Bill Evans 65' was a great group. I saw them live at Shelly's Manne Hole in the sixties. The record itself was recorded by Rudy Van Gelder the great Blue Note Series. He was my least favorite engineer for Evans. Evans Riverside recordings captured the soft nuances of his sound. I thought Van Gelders sound was hard and mettalic😮

I couldnt agree more... Just listen to" It Might as Well be Spring"---the reissue in 22(I think) was amazing... RVG is revered and I think did a good job ,back in the day, with the Blue Note quintet things etc( the reissues remastered I think are much better than the OG's) but his trios things and what you refer to as more nuanced music was pretty mediocre. I made a comment to someone here in the forum on how Bill's Riverside recordings were far superioe in sound AND musically! Listen to his playing on Kind of Blue... the recording was amazingly good dealing with Even's sound on the piano...Verve stuff... ok, but not great!! Very good points..thank you.... and thanks for the comment and for listening!

I have about a dozen box sets on Bill Evans alone. He's not in my Top 10 at the piano and I rank Dave Brubeck, Horace Silver, Sonny Clark, John Wright, and Red Garland much higher. When you have 80K cds, they all compete for your time and Evans is middle of the pack for me but very distinct. Like Art Pepper, Chet Baker, and Dave Brubeck, I find his later work rather redundant. I have his full catalog twice over in standalone cds and box set form. Stan Kenton was popular as well and we see how much he's discussed today. That's for the tip off on Golson. That I missed. By the mid 60's, I'm falling off the wagon and getting into Stax and Motown.

Even's music was a staple of my father's studio. So I learned about cool jazz before I could walk. It’s true that the audience imposes meaning and context onto music. Every record is special to someone. But that is the living essence of culture in a consumer world. It gets validated when people dive deeper, and get beyond personal likes and dislikes. There is plenty of music that I respect, but would not be my first choice to listen too. Consuming music is NOT the same as composing or performing it, and it is very easy to forget this. Which is why humility is essential. There is nothing like music to bring out the closet fascist in a random citizen. Thank god the era of art critiques and king maker record labels has been relegated to the history books by the internet. The money may be gone, but every song can in theory find its fans. Comparison, is the ultimate market force that refines popular culture over the long term. The gems tend to gather their own audience, and seminal works don’t have to be great performances in their own right. Culture is full of happy accidents, and all ideas can be inspirational. I dig Bill Evans because his work CONTINUES to stands out as my musical knowledge expands. What greater compliment can anyone make?

I can see, where the reviewer was coming from. When the reissues of Trio 64 and 65 were announced, I streamed them on my phone, while I was doing stuff around my home. At that time I was still new to jazz and not familiar with Bill Evans. The music didn't catch my attention and I remember thinking, that it was kind of elevator music. I gave it a second chance later on, where I would just sit and listen to the music and not do anything else. This time it did catch me, so I ordered both records and still like them. But Trio 64 is still the stronger one imho. My favorite recordings of his are You must believe in Spring and Everybody digs... With Peace Piece as my favorite track. That song is pure bliss.
