Pakistani pipes with a selection of reeds
Here are some better recordings of the reworked Pakistani pipes. I used a mic for all of these recordings and tuned close to 480. There are 5 setups of different reed combinations. I don’t have a problem with this pipe with any of the reed configurations.

Refurbishing a set of Pakistani pipes part 4 of 4.

Here is the final video of this project. I think the pipes look a lot better after all of the work. They definitely sound better now too. These are a great set for a beginner or for doing bar/pub gigs where there might be too many drunk people to want to take a nicer set. Please let me know what you think of the final product, and post which set you thought was the Pakistani pipe.

I apologize this video is sooooooooooo boring. All that is really shown in it is the process of impregnating the wood with stabilizer. I’ll probably lose half of my subscribers because of this video. I promise the next video will be as action packed as a Bruce Willis movie. It’s going to start off with an explosion and finish leaving you wanting more.

This is the second video of the refurbishing of a set of Pakistani bagpipes. This video shows the process of removing the lacquer and doing the ammonia bath. I also reshaped the drone tops to make them look a little more like a traditional GHB. The very end shows the before and after of the lacquer removal and ammonia bath.

These pipes were given to the San Diego Law Enforcement Emerald Society Pipe Band. Often times, donated pipes are junk, and we tend to make fun of them. However, this set shows promise. Personally, I think they sound pretty good without changing anything about them. Since they sound pretty good, I thought, why trash them. In the next few videos, over the next few weeks, I’ll show my process of ...

Stupid people cutting hemp of the lazy way, i hate seeing that on pipes, however your marks are not deep, ive seen an idiot doing it with a new stanley blade and it cut nearly half way through the pin, they were also a set of full engraved silver
Well done, the Pakistani pipes look great but are Tenor dominant in my opinion, needs more bass. Doing this yourself makes it cost effective for you. If someone had to pay to have these improvements made, I guess I would ask “WHY”?? One would be better off purchasing pipes with a reputable bagpipe manufacturer.
Hi Richard, what I've done every other time I've had to re hemp the blowpipe joint (gets rotted). After it's stripped a take a full Lenth ( 6” piece) of 600 grit sandpaper on its back on the kitchen counter ( I’m sure my wife is not thrilled about this but it’s a long flat surface) and CAREFULLY run the flapper seat across the sandpaper , ensuring ever so much to keep it square and flush. This creates a clean FLAT surface for the flapper. Also, I don’t like the white vinyl flappers, not enough ummpph to them IMO. I use the rubber orange flappers
Thank you again Richard, my wife and i just tied in my second Gannaway
Tennor drones should be tunes high up as possible
The drones look very similar to my son's Henderson's made about 1915 that have been passed down generations of pipers in my family and play accross Europe in WW2 by my grandfather.
Just wanted to say thank you. With your well explained video it gave me the confidence to tackle my first tie in myself. Cheers

Lol
What a find! These appear to be Henderson bagpipes from the 1880s. I have a nearly identical set. Imagine the many weddings, funerals, birthdays, and possibly even battles, graced by these them. If only pipes could talk...
Battlefields are not graced by bagpipe music, all it produced was the death of 8000 WW1 pipers depriving Scotland of some of the greatest pipers and almost wiped out the music and tradition from Parts of the Highlands and islands! You really have no idea about the history of Scotland and its tradition !
These pipes must have had quite a life prior to your refurb. Your work is fantastic in bringing them back to life from what essentially was their bagpipe coffin.
How to make
Outstanding, man. Some excellent tips here. Thank you.
Richar, this is a great video. Very helpful. I have not tied a bag in several years. No worries about camera work. For the most part we saw all that we needed. Your commentary filled in the spaces from the dropped camera.
Guessed them all right surprisingly haha. Best sounding Pakistani pipes I’ve ever heard. Curious what year the hendersons are. Awesome job with this entire project Edit: never mind just watched the other videos and assuming they’re the 1910s
Why would you waist your time ? Throw that crap in the bin!
That tape you are using is not the best, it tends to slide and leaves a sticky mess behind. Gaffer tape is way better and leaves no residue. You do have to cut it from a bigger roll though !
What were the tunes he played?
Thank you for taking the time to make this video.! Very helpful 😊
Thanks for putting this video together. I have tied in several bags over the years but learned some new tips and tricks here that I have incorporated which has made the process easier. Thanks again!
Thank you from Crimea, Sebastopol. I am a one for all Crimea😂 bagpipers.
"I don't have 3 hands" made me laugh. Great video.
Ah Richard, you love yourself too much bro.
So Richard, I have a 60 years old set of Gillanders, never been oiled. I live in Brisbane Australia, sub tropical and often v humid. Is it worth starting to oil then now?
So Richard, I have a 60 years old set of Gillanders and they have never been oiled. Is it a good idea to start now?
Amazing 😂
This is amazing and I’m so glad you did this and posted a video. What does the chanter sound like though?
No one likes the bagpipes
Could you explain to me why my bagpipes are not even getting to the point where need to strike them in but just start playing when I blow in air?
What, if any, did you use as an external finish? And what was the first time you played?
I have been able to restore two sets of bagpipes, I applaud you for what you do---and your playing is fantastic!!
No a tune played on the refurbished ones, we all know that as new they are fire wood!
only richard...😂
What do you use as tie-in cord?
I use #2 nylon lacing string/cord. It’s super strong and has a little bit of tack to it. It rarely breaks on me when I’m tying a bag in.
This video has given me confidence to do it myself. I am moving a hide bag from one set of pipes to another. I am very happy to report that your method worked perfectly! Thanks so much.
Glad it worked for you. Once you’ve given it a try, you realize it isn’t hard at all.
Excellent job! First class sound too 👍
Thank you for the compliment.
It would be very interesting hearing a tune played
If I still had them, I’d play a tune on them. They were given back to the band for them to be used for beginner pipers.
As a player I did think No 2 but I really was expecting much worse but useable. Do we know what they sounded like before!
I didn’t make a before recording. They had a decent tone but very quiet. They weren’t steady at all.
When you see their shop and their bagpipe quality control guy, you see why they are so bad ruclips.net/video/Ujp6HmGTwTM/видео.html
May ye never miss a Taorluath; thanks for the great video.
Haha. I just played for some house guests and missed the first one in Scotland the Brave. Total Amateur Hour.
Do you remove the exterior finish (wax/varnish) on the pieces before oiling? Also, do you have any tips about oiling the interior and exterior of the drone pins when they have metal slides on the exterior? Thank you!
I would remove anything on the outside. I don’t think it looks good and stops the oil from penetrating. You can probably remove the slides, but I wouldn’t if it’s a set of ABW pipes. I would just oil the inside of the pins. If it’s an old set of ebony pipes, I would probably remove the slides and oil the outside first.
Thank you for this!! I couldn't get my drones to fully sound without my chanter kicking in. I reset the positioning of my reed bridles, adjusted the screws so that the tuning pins were tuning 2 fingers out on the bass and with just a little hemp on the tenors, and boom clean strike ins without the chanter sounding. Awesome tips.
That’s great you got them set perfectly. This instrument is hard enough to play even when it’s set up perfectly. You definitely don’t need anything making it harder.
Hilarious videos 😂 Subscribe, subscribe, subscribe!!!! Question for you. I had an old set of MacDougall’s but they had a hand rubbed wax finish applied not so long ago and I’m hesitant to remove it but I know if I oil outside, nothing will permeate. Am I playing with dynamite here if I lightly oil the inside only? 😬
Are they Ebony of ABW?
@@sandiegobagpiper Ebony
I’ve just been waiting here by my phone. 😂
@@KidCatypusI use renaissance wax, and the oils goes through it. And after drying excess on the outside, I put new wax on. Works awesome.
Hi Richard. You don’t mention at the end wether you wipe any excess oil off the outside with dry cloth or not? Many thanks👍
Great question. I should have said something about that. If the oil doesn’t get fully absorbed, I do wipe it off. That is usually never the case with Ebony, but with ABW, cocobolo, and cocuswood, it definitely does happen.
Those pipes sure look a lot like my late 1800's vintage Hendersons...same pattern (except for the chanter as you have already determined). I love my Hendersons!!!!
Thank you for the little bit of information. Every bit helps to more closely determine the age.
हमने भीलनी फोन
Wish I knew what you said.
I really enjoy your good humour in your Videos. Also your knowledge is quite helpful for a new piper like me. Thanks for that :D
Thank you for the compliment. I hope your piping is coming along well.
Hello Richard, just a follow up. It’s been 3 months and everything is still working out fine. I cannot express enough my gratitude; this was a big monkey off my back. I would always get stressed out having to wait and schedule to get my bag tied in when it was time. Not that my friend that tied it in every time caused the stress, just the opposite, just life and scheduling. That and the fact this was a huge confidence builder in my piping. Thank you again
I’m pumped like a birthday balloon for you. I agree the added extra stress isn’t good. Being able to tie in your bag whenever you have the free time is definitely more relaxing. Also, the confidence you have from doing it for yourself is just one aspect of the boost. When people find out you know how to do it, you get an extra boost. Plus you get respect. Keep up the good work.
My ear tells me #1 was the Pakistani pipes. I really love the muted tone of #3 out of all of them. # 4 also had gorgeous tone but were louder.
I had to go back and watch the video again to remind myself that it was set # 2. It’s cool how the same reeds, in different pipes, tuned to the same pitch all produce a different tone.
I'm going to give this a try. I recently received a set of old pipes for my student and it has exactly the issue with the bass drone tuning chamber that you describe.
Let me know if I helps. I think the white hemp works best for this, since it is much thicker than regular hemp.
