Houdini tutorials for beginners to advanced.
Creating Houdini Digital Assets for Cinema 4D
I created a Houdini setup which creates bubbles on the surface of objects. I decided to give the Houdini Engine in Cinema 4D R17 a shot and show you how to prepare a digital asset in Houdini, use it in Cinema 4D and finally render it with Octane.

Pre fracture transform in Houdini
Просмотров 3,7 тыс.8 лет назад
This Houdini tutorial shows you how to create high detailed fractures in Houdini using a technique called pre fracture transform. It creates fractures without the typical straight voronoi edges and nice surface detail on the inside faces.
Building the geoboil setup in Houdini
Просмотров 4 тыс.8 лет назад
This tutorial shows you how to create my geoboil setup in Houdini from scratch. It generates a boiling effect and double walled bubbles on the surface of any object. After that you can use this setup and turn it into a HDA and use it for example in Cinema 4D
Building the slicer setup in Houdini
Просмотров 4,4 тыс.8 лет назад
This tutorial shows you how to build a slicer asset in Houdini which takes any geometry and rebuilds it with slices. The count, thickness and angle of the slices can be adjusted however you need them.
Volume Trails in Houdini
Просмотров 83 тыс.8 лет назад
Volume trails are a pretty cool tool in Houdini which can create abstract forms, but can also be controlled to build a very specific shape using vector volumes. In this tutorial we set up our custom vector volume using the tangents of a curve mix it with a 3D noise and calculate a cross product to build an interesting vortex structure.
Houdini Animated Crack Through Ground Plane
Просмотров 17 тыс.8 лет назад
This video is my further exploration of Khermah's Houdini line crack tutorial on RUclips. When I got to the end of that tutorial I had some problems getting a nice render. So I spent some time debugging the scene and simplifying the workflow to get an acceptable render out of the effect. This video demonstrate node based modeling driven by an animated source.
Houdini Lens Flare Starter Rig
Просмотров 1,8 тыс.8 лет назад
This video shows how to setup a line based plane system with a different image texture on each plane. Vex code controls the generation of file names for each image mapped plane along the line. A material stylesheet is used to route the vex generated attribute information into Mantra shader parameters. The result is a multi-stacked lens flare when you look down the length of the line.
Houdini Python Lip Synch For H15 Character Using Papagayo
Просмотров 1,4 тыс.8 лет назад
In this short video I explore how to use Python code to directly drive the face controls of the Houdini 15 male character. I also demonstrate how to import a WAV file into Papagayo to create the data file that the python script will read. The data file supplies frame numbers and phoneme as they should appear over time. The Python script maps the data to controls on a frame-by-frame basis.
Houdini Font Crumble with Smoke and Debris Shards
Просмотров 24 тыс.8 лет назад
This video demonstrates how to use a series of tools to build a complex crumbling effect in Houdini 15. The video shows how to use groups to focus fracturing on a specific area of a mesh and how to use an Attribute Wrangle to create your own density style attribute for scattering. In the process we fracture, create rigid body objects and glue the pieces back together. The video demonstrates how...
Houdini Particles Break Glue Bonds To Release Fracture
Просмотров 18 тыс.8 лет назад
This video explores how to use a particle system to create impact points on the surface of a tube object and use those points for fracturing and releasing the glue bonds of a pre-fractured object. We take a look at how to export Impact data from DOPs and reference it in SOPs to form a new geo object that can be used as a modeling tool. This video also demonstrates how to use two AutoDopNetworks...
Houdini Fill A Font With Fluid
Просмотров 22 тыс.8 лет назад
I have put together a short demonstration of how to fill a font with fluid. I also cover how to setup a divergence field to add pressure to the system. I also show how to clone the entire fluid system to make an adjustable pressure value for each letter.
Houdini Set Things Up Knock Em’ Down
Просмотров 6618 лет назад
Here are a few fracture experiments I have done in Houdini. I wanted to show case my new song "Set Things Up" coming out on my new Album, "Tongue Like A Cat", set to release in July 2016.
Houdini Attach Head To Body
Просмотров 3,5 тыс.8 лет назад
In this short video I explore how to attach a head mesh to a body mesh with similar topology. I cover basic things such as face selection, face deletion and edge group creation. I show how to use the PolyBridge node to bind two meshes together and how to unravel a twisted result. A final follow up using a Sculpt node to smooth face loops and hide seam.
Houdini The BVH Tweaker For Carnegie Mellon Motion Capture Files
Просмотров 2,6 тыс.8 лет назад
In this video I demonstrate some of the features of a new Houdini BVH tweaker python script. The script modifies the Carnegie Mellon University Motion Builder rig to allow extended functionality such as adjusting the length of various bone chains in the rig. The script also has a tool to mirror bone lengths from the left to the right side of the rig for symmetrical bone lengths. There is an ori...
Houdini Import Animated FBX Rig From Blender Into Houdini

Houdini Install BVH Into Mocap Crowd Agent
7yrs since the video was uploaded.. this is the reason i will always love houdini.. try this on an animated character in c4d and you will curse your stars. perhaps the new nodes system solves it.. but im glad i left the camp yrs ago
Thx man ! it was useful !
@star_size = randomptnum); @pscale = @star_size * ch("../scatter1/scaleradiiby"); if (@star_size > 0.15) {@Cd = {0,0,1};} if (@star_size > 0.25) {@Cd = {1,1,1};} if (@star_size > 0.5) {@Cd = {1,0.10826862,0.741036};} if (@star_size > 0.75) {@Cd = {1,0.826862,0.741036};}
Hey sir, it's 2023 now, would you say this workflow is still relevant or there's a better way to do it now? :D
You probably figure it out already, but this still good stuff until around 23:40, from that on I would use the new Vellum workflow.
If you're looking to achieve this on Houdini 18 or later all you need to do is: 1. Setup your flip sim and make sure "Add divergence field" is checked on your flip object 2. "Divergence by attribute" is checked on flip solver (Volume motion > Divergence) 3. Plug a geometry wrangle into second input of flip solver (Particle velocity) 4. In the geometry wrangle paste "@divergence = 1;" 5. Should see the particles pushing apart, if not, try lowering your particle separation or adjusting your scene scale (e.g. flip source geo or colliders)
this comment is a life saver!
Great tutorial, Very helpfull. I'm just starting with houdini. I'd like to know if there's a possibility to upload data from matlab to houdini. The idea is to bring a velocity vector matrix and do simulation with it? Thanks!
Hi, thanks for the tutorials. do you know how i can scale down sphere instead of have them disappear instantly ? thank you
the video you refer to is marked private. Any other suggestions?
Shame it's so outdatedd, could be really useful still. But those new changes of nodes and even synthax in vex and so on mmake sit very very hard to follow. Not getting anyy pressure in myy sim, the object won't fill up higher than the emitter, quite frustrating.
I like it sadly it is too different from Houdini 19 for a newbie to finish, sad was trying to fill up some letters with something close to paint, but when you added velocity my screen looks very different and can't see that tab you went into, sad too, cause I finally got a decent video card and a GPU
Why you guys are not making tutorials for 5 years?
thanx
Thank you for this absolutely amazing tutorial! Really helpful :)
I want to make a custom velocity that follows the geometry of a specific object. How might I do this? Thank you!
Hi, i´m trying to replicate in Houdini 18.5 but the foreach node changed, and I can´t seem yo fin d a way to get it working properly. Any chance you could upload the file? Very helpful video, thanks! Fabiola
Try this in a point wrangle instead of the foreach f@Cd=@ptnum/(@numpt-1.0);
@@carloballot4927 Thanks Carlo!! You saved me!!
To anyone wondering why you cant see your volume, make sure your naming of velocity is changed to vel instead
This was an awesome tutorial. Thanks!
This is awesome! Tnx
Who made this tutorial? Does anyone know??
In this video at the beginning we see his face and he tells his name but I can only understand Simon ... Hope you will find out if still necessary. ruclips.net/video/YVbcF8g-Raw/видео.html&ab_channel=HoudiniTutorials
@@mjparent222 Thanks for replying. However, I believe this channel is a collection of Houdini tutorials. I don't think the owner of this channel made these tutorials. At 0:02 he says "Adam here." And the one you were referring to is actually Simon Fiedler. He has his own channel on Vimeo. I really like Adam's tutorials and I'd like to watch more of his. 😀👍
at 8:47 here is the fixed and correct code if (($FF > 7 && $FF <48), 1,0) otherwise it won't work if you don't switch the 0 with a 1
i love these legacy tutorials since after working with Maya character animation tools for years, I'm ready for Houdini. What version is this? Thanks.
Houdini 13 ;-)
I'm really late but everything works except during final render debris are replaced but particle sphere still render. I'm use 15.5 so not sure if the version is the problem or user error.
Do you have to buy houdini to use this feature?
can you please provide the script in the description of the video?
You are the realest, subbedddd
Excellent. God bless you.
its like magic. thanks
Thanks Man. keep doing it.
Can you maintain texture from stylesheets once you export to alembic? from a crowd to be more specific
Amazing Tutorial
2:08 i can't find mantra shader
you have to be either in the "out"-level or create a ropnet in obj-level. Inside them the mantra node is visible.
Hi! Thanks for this great tutorial but I didn't find the "cookie" node (3:49) in H18 Apprentice... It seems to be deleted by SideFX in the actual version because "it is not a strong tool"... I tried to use the "boolean" node tool instead but it's not the same result... Please, does anybody tell me how i can resolve this issue? Thanks in advance.
Use Boolean, but treat grid as SURFACE, not SOLID.
thanks, i love your clip. we nee more tutorials.
Do you need Houdini Indie? Or can you do this with Apprentice?
amazing tutorial and your explanation is soo good ..thanks man
Trying to do this with the new for each network and can’t get the feedback loop to work. Any hints what might be different in new version vs what you did here? Thanks.
Everything works except for the feedback loop (cables properly resting on mountain just not on other cables). The each node gives a warning that the foreach is invalid..
Same problem...Have you solved that?
@@antennatrees It works with the new foreach network: on the foreach begin node click "create meta import node", then set the meta import to method to "fetch feedback" - this replaces the second "each with feedback" node in the video. otherwise the rest of the node layout should be the same as the video.
This is interesting seeing the workflow in Houdini for a relatively simple setup. It is funny though that you could do this in cinema 4d with a cloner in like 6 clicks. Houdini just has so many operations that are not obvious to me as a c4d user, like using a point sop to change an object’s color. diving into this program is daunting, but seems worth the mountain node of effort.
grat vid, cheers
Thank you for the great tutorial!! 11:50 tickled me xD
Wow fam, that Ray node just keeps impressing me with it's plethora of artistic uses. I wonder if I can get this going in Houdini engine into UE4 and feed Unreal geo back into the plugin to include in te loop. On another note, I bet you could use this trick to create chain mail -like structures. You would just need to control the order of the curves. Great work.
Thank you!
Loved it thanks!
Can this slicing be done on a particle simulation? Looking to create something that looks like a MRI scan with images of the slices.
Listen man this tutorial is insane I am learning houdini now and WOW this shows so many tools and how you can use them to create very nice effects! Thank you very much for your time!
hi, thank you very much, do the "part 2" exists somewhere ?
Thanks for this - very helpful :) Man, CHOPs takes a while to click, huh (pun fully intended)
How can I change a fbx file into a sdf (SignedDistanceField) for Unity? It is also an animation, what makes things even more frostrating 😅 Would be wonderful if you could help me :)
very good tut
Very nice, thanks
this tutorial doesnt work anymore in 17.5 or i am doing something wrong. Some nodes aren't the same anymore
