I create realistic bird carvings from wood.
Carving An American Crow Sculpture From Wood
In this video I carve and paint a half-sized American Crow on a corn stalk from a piece of tupelo wood. I also make the feet from brass. This sculpture was a commissioned piece for a private collection.

One of my favorite birds of prey: In this video I carve a Gyrfalcon from a piece of tupelo wood and then using a variety of brushes and airbrushes I paint it with acrylics. The Gyrfalcon is the largest falcon in the world and can be found in the Arctic tundra. It is a prized bird of falconers and was once reserved for only kings and nobles to possess. Absolutely feast to my eyes Jason !! You are gifted🙏❤️

Stunning attention to detail! If i may ask: Who generally purchases your works? Private collectors or galleries, museums or wildlife exhibitions? I'm an intermediate sculptor and furniture maker and want to study product design or something similar. I'd like to combine furniture and sculpting. So I'm curious about streams of income and how people build a career. Did you study art/etc. or are you self-taught? I'd greatly appreciate any advice! Thank you and best wishes!
Make more videos man. You're work is beautiful. I do sculpture myself. Not wood, clay.
Great video! Thanks, Jason.
Thank you and I'm glad you liked it.
Awesome work. I need to do more birds. Do you get your tueplo from Brad?
@@Danny_Harris-Arts Yes, the last few orders I have got from him. Thank you for watching.
@@JasonLucioArt I figured so when you said North Carolina. I buy from him. I live in Arkansas and we have thousands of acres of Tueplo swamps but I can’t find it locally anywhere😖
Really nice work! First time I've seen one of your videos. Have you ever tried automotive paint for feather irredecence? They make pearl additives that shift from one color to another in one application.
No, I haven't tried them but have wondered how well they would work. I should give them a try. Thank you for the comment and for watching.
@@JasonLucioArt they have plastic models with the pearl effects displayed so you can see what you need. Tell them what you need the paint for & they'll sell you a few "touch up" ounces in a small bottle. You'll need thinner & probly harder also, depending on the kind of paint. Works through an airbrush just fine. P.s. the solid colors are very opaque! I used them straight to pinstripe custom vehicles.
Brilliant. Beautifully shown and beautifully carved. Many thanks.
Many thanks!
How long overall would this item take to create from beginning to end? Stunning.
This one took around 125 hours. Thanks for asking.
@@JasonLucioArt do your items become museum pieces or gallery pieces?
THANKS, JASON
You're welcome and thank you for watching.
Phenomenal job. The details! Wow!
Thank you very much!
A bird will not sing, but vividly standing forever.
How long did it take you to make this?
About 125 hours.
Outstanding work. How long did this take?
Thank you. This took around 125 hrs to complete.

What do you use to seal the bird before you prime it ,is it thinned with a solvent?
I seal them with a semi gloss clear lacquer. Usually Deft or Watco brand. Sometimes I will cut the first coat by 25% with lacquer thinner if the detail is very fine.
So elegant.
Thank you!
Me or the crow? 😂
@@JasonLucioArtI’d say both!
Beautiful work as always Jason! I always enjoy seeing the realism you capture in your carvings!
Many thanks!
Hey, thank you so much! That was a great tutorial. The blocking out of the shape was very helpful to me. I've carved ivory and made jewelry for years but I'm just starting to carve wood, and raptors are what I want to carve first. I loved this. Subscribed.
That's great. Thank you for the comment and I am glad to hear it was helpful.
Amazing!!!
Thank you!
Beautiful work!
@@todddudley3600 Thank you very much!
Wow looks great are you using guache for paint and clear coating it?
No, I am using a resin based acrylic paint that has a matte finish. At times I will give the paint a top coat of a thinned acrylic satin varnish or un-thinned on areas like the bill or feet. Here is the paint I use shop.decoart.com/traditions-canvas-art-paint/
Nice piece i carve as well old school
@@TommyReeves-kr4gl Thank you and thanks for watching.
So realistic. Amazing work beautiful. 😊❤
Thank you so much 😀
Your channel is great, and there are not many quality bird carving channels like it, but it has very few videos, please upload more and longer videos!
Thank you, I will be uploading another soon.
Amazing work
@@DaveCollierCamping Thank you!
Excellent work
Thank you.
Nice, VERY nice. I was wondering about the ring around its neck where the two pieces of wood were joined. The finished eagle head that ring was gone. I'm guessing the painting filled it in?
@@danielhanawalt4998 I used 5 minute epoxy to join the pieces and it filled the joint line perfectly. Thank you for watching!
Wowwww
Thank you and thanks for watching!
Wow
Genuine pleasure watching you work, man -- beautifully done
Thank you so much 😀
Excellent performance 👍 thanks
Thank you!
Accurate Sculpture fine 👌 thanks
Amazing work! Can I ask where you got the Eagle study cast?
Thank you. You can get one here www.vandykestaxidermy.com/ABH303-P7130.aspx
Nice work Jason. May I ask where you got your pattern from as I'm contemplating on carving one myself
Hi Steve, I drew this pattern up myself. I am looking to finalize it and make it available for download here on RUclips in the near future. Thanks for watching and asking.
Thanks so much Jason! Your work is inspiring!
OMG, that is SO beautiful! Never mind that that is my ultimate favorite bird of prey, your skill and command of color and form is exemplary!
Truly appreciated. Thank you for taking the time watch.
Bardzo piękna robota starannie dopracowane detale.❤😂
Dziękuję
I think the adding of feather splits tends to get over-done. In reality a bird would never allow itself to get int a disheveled state unless it is in poor health. AS a bander, I have handled many birds, and they do not show feather splits. I get the artistic interpretation thing, but birds are streamlined for flight, particularly one like a falcon, which is a dynamic hunter. Just my view. I do admire the quality of your work.
Thank you Stephen. Yes, it is an interpretation for sure. Not enough and a carving can look static and too many the bird looks messy or ill.
Experience work 👍 ❤️🇬🇧
Thank you for watching.
Very nice carving ,Wonderful and life like . I once had a pellet in a carving too. I knew it was a pellet . I left it in .
Thank you. It was cool to find the pellet and I liked the extra bling it added 😆 .
Beautiful work Jason. Im in the middle of a woodcarving course for beginners. Our project is a Piping Plover. We are using "Bass wood" it seems very forgiving for a beginner carver. do you have other wood that you can suggest for beginners?
Hi Jim, I would also suggest trying tupelo wood, especially if you are power carving. It is very light and details easily with a burner or texturing stone. It is what is use for most carvings. If you are making a more rustic or traditional carving with knives/gouges then maybe try white cedar.
@@JasonLucioArt Thank you.
I'm seldom at a loss for words, but there's nothing I could say to describe my amazement... so I subscribed. Thank you, sincerely

Amazing 😍
Wow, gracias por compartir tan espectacular arte. ❤
Hola, muchas gracias
These videos are *WAY* outside of my normal RUclips selection but I think they're very neat and interesting! Keep up the good work! I wish you had more!
Thank you for taking time to watch them. I'll add more in the future 😊.
Absolutely amazing!!!!!! I would love to see a Harpia! They're birds of prey also! and a pidgeon too!! it would be interesting to see how you'd make the iridescence of their feathers! Also, a toucan or a blue macaw with very strong colors!! i just love your art!! Please keep uploading forever
Many thanks. A Harpy would be a great one to do! I also agree with doing some bright colored tropical birds. Thank you for watching.
Truly the king of ducks!
I like how you kept the shot gun pellet in the piece, kind of pulls the eye and makes for an interesting story. Cool work Jay :)
Thanks Reece. A little bling for the King 👑 😊
